Good video. A ? I have is: Is Tweak SSD free a good optimiser programme for SSD drives please. I can't seem to find a lot of info re this programme and as I have SSD drives, I'm wondering whether tweak SSD would be a good option to defrag or optimise my computer please.
I would not use ANY defrag or tweak tool on an SSD unless it's part of the installation (ie: Samsung Magician). Windows will optimize the drive automatically, there really isn't anything you need to do. Best to keep your PC clean by removing startup apps, unnecessary programs, even running programs like TronScript that will do a full debloat and system clean. Here's how if you want to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/9hWwY8Lo4ag/v-deo.html
Great video with lots of super useful info! I have a question though since I just got a new computer with SSD. Since you are not supposed to defragment, does that also mean that you should not shred files because of the multiple passes that it takes? Thanks for this video and I am definitely going to check out some of your others.
That is an excellent question, and I honestly don't know. On paper, that's exactly what it sounds like, so I'd say don't do it until it's proven that it doesn't cause any extra writes on the drive, which I doubt
Q: if you have a SSD that reports as highly fragmented but the defrag software warns against defragging it should you go forward with defragmenting the drive
Negative. You should never defragment an SSD drive. Windows automatically uses TRIM to optimize the drive. Just make sure to leave at least 20% free space for best results
Dude, you often said in your videos "Every computer will die, so rush to buy yourself extended warranty". I use computers so much and quite intense, but I never had any dead in 30 years. I had one smartphone died, but that was Sony crap and it was replaced by warranty. But computers, desktops and laptops, were always pretty stable for me. I kinda can't imagine where do you get those dead computers from and what people were doing with them. Moreover, in 30 years of computers usage I only changed thermal CPU paste once on the desktop, but never yet on laptops. Probably should do it once in while, just as precaution.
Nearing the end. One thing that pops in my mind regarding leaving the old PC on instead of turning it off... it depends on how old it is and what OS it runs on. Windows10 has funny settings that just turning off the PC won't stop the background apps running. It is more like a sleep mode. Restarting the PC really helped to speed up things that were sluggish for clogging up memory with unused stuff. I noticed this when my PC played up before the reinstallation. I had a habit of hibernating it, which was probably similar to switching it off o Win10. I couldn't do simple things, browser loaded a page for ages, often suddenly, after it ran smoothly when I logged in, initially. Then it didn't. Restarting made it work faster like by a miracle, just restarting it sometimes took ages itself. Until it had the hiccups again, and I noticed it happened often after it was hibernating for over 24 hours. If I sat to it and did something within every 24 hours it lasted longer before I had to restart it to be able to work on it. This could be due to two unrelated issues though, but it is a known fact now that just switching Win10 off won't stop the stuff and turning it on again won't start fresh. Restart does that.

hi Scott: By following your suggestion, I installed Defraggler and run 3 times on my C drive which had Windows 10 and newly installed various tools you mentioned in your UA-cam here. Before I ran 1st time Drive C had 19 GB free space; after 1st became 12 GB; 2nd it became 5.8 GB and then 3rd time 8.2 GB with 13% of this partition drive on new Samsung SDD installed with Windows 10 installation media. It is my hope the free space size should become larger rather than smaller. I wonder (1) why free space size fluctuate like this; (2) still a lot holes. I also ran Defraggler against physically separate old Hitachi hard drive and the result was excellent WITHOUT holes. Maybe I should not defrag this drive contained Windows 10.
Right. Chrome, Brave and Edge run on Chromium, as I am aware (hopefully correct). What exactly makes them different in terms of security? That besides Brave seems to have more security features and blocking ads by default, and just now I completed the installation and learned how to use the Microsoft Defender Application guard for Edge (probably available on Pro and higher versions). That should also add some extra security IMO. Is it really just in how often they update the browser? And what if I use Google as a search engine in Brave (which I don't at the moment, but I have noticed they offer a bit different search results, or at least display it differently).
Best bet is to use DDG as your search engine, regardless of browser. This video was before Brave was released, so I can't speak to that one specifically

Q Is it possible to change the size of the taskbar ? Next , in right corner of taskbar there is that notification area with hidden icons , is it possible to permanently show some of those icons ?
In Windows 10, Right-click on the taskbar and select Lock the taskbar. Click and hold the top of the taskbar. Drag the mouse up and down to resize the taskbar.
with hidden icons, click on the arrow to bring it up, then click and hold on the task icon you want to move and drag it next to the other small icons (Volume, WiFi etc)
They've locked down Windows 11 so you can't adjust the size of the icons. My system tray only shows 4 icons, so I'm not sure how many you can truly display. That may be the maximum.
Q. Scott, does the defrag program work on SSD's. Most defrag programs I've seen work on std. hard drives and not ssd. Thank for all your great video's. Greetings from Greenville, NC.
I spent LOTS of time In Greenville when younger - my whole family was from there! Go Pirates! Yes it will work on SSD, but you never want to run it. SSD drives don't store files the way HDD drives do
My final note, regarding that compressed air... I don't know, I have some aversion against it. While it may clean up a large portion of the internal parts by blowing the dust out, the chance is some might get stuck somewhere where we don't want it to and cause troubles. This was advised against regarding my Scan'n'cut machine when somebody suggested using this compressed air tool. It could be a hard detective work to look for a lump of dust stuck somewhere. Sucking it out with a bit more powerful tool could probably do a better job, agitating the parts with a fine brush to release it, if there is something of this kind of a vacuumer. The same for my keyboard (it shouldn't pull individual keys out of their slot, and if it did, we know where to look for them and push them back in LOL).
I've always had good luck with compressed air. Now I use a rechargeable air duster. But I can see the benefit of sucking junk out vs dusting it out as well 👍
Question about Defraggler. If I have and SSD instead of an HDD, there are no moving parts. It all happens with addresses. Is it worth cutting down the life of my SSD to defragment the SSD when the address switching happens almost instantly? As I understand it writing to my SSD reduces its lifespan a lot faster than reading it does. Which is better in the long run?
I have used CCleaner for years and if I'm working on a friend's computer I always install CCleaner. Basically I use CCleaner every night that I have finished using my computer for the evening (always after I ensure I empty the recycle bin). Then I either run the free version of Super Anti Spyware or set my anti virus programme to run overnight. Whalla by the time I get up the next day. I'm set to go using my computer.
@@AskYourComputerGuy Me, I love CCleaner and the very handy tools feature in the menu to change what programmes happen at start up. By using this feature tool, I didn't really have to change anything in task manager as all the usual suspect programmes that run at start up I had disabled in CCleaner.
Can I add 8gb. RAM with 4,gbs to give me 12gbs ram....have 2 slots of 4 gbs now both different manufacturers. Want to match manufacturers, but one 8 gbs will do. This OK?
Three things: one, check the max RAM capacity on your motherboard from their website. If your board only supports 8GB, anything over that won't be seen. Two, your RAM will run at the slowest speed of whatever sticks you have installed, so for example, if you have a 6400 installed and then add 5200, all of your memory will run at 5200. Third, make sure you don't have to install memory in pairs. You can find this out by doing a scan on Crucial.com memory configurator online. Other than that, go for it!
I asked you about C Cleaner not removing a internet explorer file "temp internet files" 5,121 kbs. You mentioned it relates to Edge, can you give a fix for this. I can run cleanse over and over. It will not delete this file. How good is CCleaner really?
I said it "could" be related to Edge. Not knowing the file name or exactly what is happening leads me to just guess. I would reset Edge back to factory defaults, remove Edge from Windows startup, boot into safe mode, run MalwareBytes and then TronScript if that doesn't remove it.
I would like to know more about VPNs. I do a lot of international travel and need a VPN. I would like to know if there is a good free VPN. I love your videos.
Thank you, I appreciate that. Honestly, the only true thing you need for a VPN provider is a "no-logs" policy. That means they store zero information about you that could be turned over to law enforcement. As far as free, they're all about the same, they just limit your daily bandwidth. As long as you find one with no-logs policy, you're still better off than not having one at all 👍
Before the 14th minute, when you say it isn't the Windows' problem I will probably disagree. I have had an issue, my pc was slowing down at times, rebooting sometimes was taking ages, and I wanted to check whether my paid Norton 360 wasn't the issue. The advise was to pause it and see. But I couldn't pause it. That option was greyed out. Norton advised on their pages to reinstall it and try again. I did reinstall Norton every year to get a discounted licence, that including all the files it had left in the background were removed. Without doing it it didn't allow me to renew the licence at a discounted price. What I did was I uninstalled it and a bag of fleas opened. Before uninstalling it I ran it to do a full scan, which took over 5 hours, so it was unlikely being a malware that caused issues (unless Norton was that malware, which some IT people on the web are saying). What I found out was that I couldn't update Windows defender, I couldn't run a antivirus scan, I couldn't do the files backup via Windows, some processes kept stopping and me unable to keep them going, despite being able to start them and set up to start automatically... they kept turning themselves off almost immediately. I spent a few weeks going back and forth with various checks, running commands in cmd or powershell, even extended the recovery partition successfully to install the Windows updates (which is telling me it wasn't initially the problem of my problem as many others had this issue)... something was terribly messed up with my Windows and I wasn't able to figure it out and fix, even DISM kept failing and scannow found no integrity violations. I ended up backing up all my files on an external driveS (two of them) manually and reinstalling the whole stuff from the very scratch, via the manufacturer's recovery tool, as it has a higher privileges for my security above my admin privileges (HP Surestart). I blame Norton from messing up my system and you can guess I never went back to it, despite the licence was renewed just about a month before this happened. I have been having issues with this pc that kept building up for years (as I have been using Norton for years), and uninstalling it didn't fix it, only uncovered deeper issues it was probably masking.
Whipping a gateway 64bit system .. followed the steps to get the windows ten media on a flash drive properly.. plugged in the flash drive and cut on the system .. I get :user profile cannot be loaded.. then it takes me to the sign on screen .. click on sign in.. and goes back to profile can't be loaded.. now what?
Did you tell your computer to boot to the flash drive? A corrupt user profile isn't uncommon and you'll likely need to access the command prompt from the troubleshooting menu to create a new local account to access your PC

Hi Scott, Thanks for the video. I learned a lot. I’m having an issue with something eating up a bunch of my storage on my Del laptop. I have 936 GB of storage and recently discovered I was maxed out. So I removed a bunch of files, mostly pictures, videos and some documents and empty the recycling bin. Moved a bunch of videos to an external hard drive and got the storage down to about 80% just so I could use it. A day later it was maxed out again. I again removed probably 12 GB, a few hours later it was maxed out again. It keeps maxing out without me doing anything. Any suggestions on what to do? Edit: I also empty cash, temporary files and removed duplicate files. I also ran Norton and Avast and no viruses or malware was found. I have 289 GB of documents, music, videos, photos and apps. And 42.6 GB for System & reserved. And 606 GB for ‘other’. I clicked on that category, and it shows about 10 folders totaling less than 2 GB. I have no idea where or what the other 604 GB are.
I've seen that with Norton antivirus and others. Also with various backup programs that keep copies ON the drive being backed up. I'd download WinDirStat for free and that will give you a better idea of what's eating your drive space. It probably has nothing to do with your personal files 👍
Well, you hit the nail on the head. I ran WinDirStat and N360 Backup is hogging up 605 BG and I never back up my laptop. Not sure how that happens. What to do now?@@AskYourComputerGuy
I use the Ghostery extension in Google Chrome. One can also get their browser as well. It's a great ad blocker. I also use it on my mobile and tablet. I wish they'd bring out a version for TV as I'd love to stream YT videos on my large TV however the ads using their stupid YT app is a right royal pain in the arse to put this mildly.!!!!
Never heard of that extension, but anything that blocks ads (except on maybe UA-cam, of course), is good in my book. If you trust it and it works for you, go for it!
@@AskYourComputerGuy Yes it is a very safe programme and works on YT ads on desktops, laptops, mobile (cell phone) and tablets. Unsure about Apple devices. And it's free which is even better!!!!
Remember to stop your fans with tape, a pencil or something, before blowing them out so you don't backfeeed high voltage from the fan motors turning into generators causing damage.
I have been a Firefox user for many years but recently switched to Edge… There are several reasons… and I still have Firefox on my devices… but I use Edge for my work. Surprisingly…I love it !
Is there a way to delete edge off my windows 11 computer please? Can't stand it to put things mildly and the bugger is that half the microsoft programmes I don't use including XBox, One Note and the like and the majority cannot be deleted in the all apps section. Microsoft are right royal pains now because they don't allow one to delete this silly programmes.
1000% agree. Most of that crap is never going to be used by anyone, but yet you can't remove it. Thankfully it doesn't take up much space, but if you're OCD like me it's annoying. Suggestion: leave Edge. Even if you don't use it. Delete it from the desktop, even your start menu and taskbar if you want. But if ONE DAY your regular browser gets infected, you'll be thankful for that Edge being there to get you online to solve your problem. Let it sit in silence for that (hopefully never) one day you'll need access to the web. Trust me on this one ;)
and I'm sure one could, if desired, remove it, but it would involve hacking the registry and a lot of complicted stuff. Then it will come right back after the next big Windows update. Best to just hide it and forget it exists ;)
@@AskYourComputerGuy One can't uninstall Edge on Windows 11 at any rate. So yes I have just hidden it so it only shows in All Apps. To be honest I've never had an issue with Chrome - touching wood. I guess because I have so many programmes to deal such issues. Nortons Anti Virus which I'm getting used to - they took over Bullguard which I loved. Malwarebytes Pro version for laptop and free version for mobile & tablet; and Super Anti Spyware. I run all 3 programmes regularly.
I don't trust Chrome. Not after all the zero-day exploits that seemed to literally happen weekly. They've done better with auto update but I'm leery. Overly cautious I suppose.
The C drive not so much, that's not crazy. The D drive, just depends on what is stored on it, how much spare room you have, types of files, sizes, lots of factors. I'd run it again and don't do a quick defrag, make sure you do a full defrag. Takes longer but you'll see better results most likely
Unless you're already at 40% or higher...then you will absolutely see a speed difference. My observed record so far is 89%. I didn't even think it ass possible for a Windows PC to get that fragmented 🤷♂️
You can still purchase a Windows 10 PC all day, as long as it is still being supported by Microsoft. I would highly recommend a W10 device over W11. You can always upgrade but you can't always go backwards 👍
Any real good advice in this video? I stopped when he said defragment 😂.. mechanical hdd isn't even used in modern computers, aside from nas and backups.
For over a decade file defragmentation has not made one bit of difference to the speed at which any computer ran. Time for so called experts to dump Defrag out of their lexicon.
Lets not lie or sugar coat anything, maybe you should tell them why u really make a locale account. Its also cuz microsoft owns your computer w admin privileges until you break that connection w them. While they have them escalated privileges that entire time they could scan and look through all your documents and files on the client-side anytime they want to and take the file they want or need without your permission and on top of that could literally delete whatever whatever they don't find necessaey to benefit microsoft. If you have any files on your computer that resemble to changing your operating system to a different operating system like a Linux or apple it will block anything it's related to that software. E.i. I used to have itools on my computer I used to use it frequently for my Apple iPhone. Well I guess went down and I got it ran again had to reinstall these programs but cant download itools. it would not let me download iTools for anything...
Because the one that's built into Windows doesn't work very well. I've had dozens, hundreds of Windows PC's over the years that were 20/30/50% fragmented...doesn't sound like Windows is doing a very good job. Now, maybe so on SSD, but not on HDD equipped systems

Oops! Meant to ask about auto Windows update to fix zero day issue or am I mixing up apples with oranges?
Apples and oranges. Zero day exploits are often with apps or browsers. Rarely with Windows itself 👍
Which free duplicate file finder do you recommend?
Don't know of any good free ones. I'm sure there are some. I use Duplicate File Detective but it's not free.
SSD drives don't store files the way HDD drives do
NEVER try to defrag an SSD. This can kill it
@Schattenchronik agreed
@AskYourComputerGuy So an SSD DRIVE computer doesn't need to be defragged?
@re-ridersuzanne correct. Never defrag an SSD, HDD only
can I get an old windows xp operating sytem home computer
Only on the used market, but yes.
Never defrag an SSD. Not unless you want to replace them every few months. Windows will handle drive organization using the TRIM feature 👍
I've always used CCleaner and never had any issues. Not sure why everyone hates it so badly
@@AskYourComputerGuy Me, I love CCleaner and the very handy tools feature in the menu to change what programmes happen at start up. By using this feature tool, I didn't really have to change anything in task manager as all the usual suspect programmes that run at start up I had disabled in CCleaner.
hi can you use if you have bitfender on pc cheers.
Wow, what a nightmare 🥲
Whipping a gateway 64bit system .. followed the steps to get the windows ten media on a flash drive properly.. plugged in the flash drive and cut on the system .. I get :user profile cannot be loaded.. then it takes me to the sign on screen .. click on sign in.. and goes back to profile can't be loaded.. now what?
Did you tell your computer to boot to the flash drive? A corrupt user profile isn't uncommon and you'll likely need to access the command prompt from the troubleshooting menu to create a new local account to access your PC
Im using an older computer that had windows 8 i had it running perfectly. Then windows started to do it's update after i diabled automatic update. They till bypassed it and download it anyway to windows 11. Then i got a notice it wasn't able to complete the download. It wouldnt even return to windows eight. Now it runs so slowbi cant even use it.
You could always go back to 8, if you were happy with that
@@AskYourComputerGuy .. I have tried and can't find the download to do it. I'm using another older computer with windows ten, both were better with eight. I mainly use them for music.
@dogbone1065 www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO
Good music
Hey Scott, it is a year later. Do you still feel the same about upgrading to windows 11 or is it still buggy?
Same. It's better, but I still hate it. I downgraded back to W10 and I'm happier now :)
@@AskYourComputerGuy I just got Windows 11 and like it.
???? I have the Hp all-in-one Pavilion, which runs very slow. I tried to run the Quick Defrag. Status:
Current state: 783 Fragmented files, 3093 Total Fragments, 11%Fragmentation.
It appears that the program is running, but after a period of the time ,the program stops showing that aborted. A suggestions?
What to do now?@@AskYourComputerGuy
i put all you told me to put on whent back to windows 10 mail is blue mail
Free is always good! I'll check it out 💪
Remember to stop your fans with tape, a pencil or something, before blowing them out so you don't backfeeed high voltage from the fan motors turning into generators causing damage.
I have been a Firefox user for many years but recently switched to Edge… There are several reasons… and I still have Firefox on my devices… but I use Edge for my work. Surprisingly…I love it !
I didn't care for it at first. To me, it was Internet Explorer 2.0 - but I admit, it's growing on me :)
Overly cautious I suppose.
my C: drive went from 18% frag to 17%... and my F: drive from 50% to 50% :D is this normal?
The C drive not so much, that's not crazy. The D drive, just depends on what is stored on it, how much spare room you have, types of files, sizes, lots of factors. I'd run it again and don't do a quick defrag, make sure you do a full defrag. Takes longer but you'll see better results most likely
Modern platter hard drives have a modicum of "intelligence" built in and try to optimize file storage when writing. So defrag may not achieve much.
Unless you're already at 40% or higher...then you will absolutely see a speed difference. My observed record so far is 89%. I didn't even think it ass possible for a Windows PC to get that fragmented 🤷♂️
Hey. I hope I am the first to mention this, but: you new glasses reflect the light, which makes it so we have a hard time seeing your eyes.
New laptops all come with Windows 11 now.
Had that with Windows 10. It ruined my laptop.
You can still purchase a Windows 10 PC all day, as long as it is still being supported by Microsoft. I would highly recommend a W10 device over W11. You can always upgrade but you can't always go backwards 👍
The one I want has Windows 11. I'll muddle through. I didn't like Windows 10.
@re-ridersuzanne I can't stand Windows 11. I have given it every opportunity to impress me. It fails on every level. IJS
Sorry 😢
🙂
can I get an old windows xp home computer
\
Yes but only on the used market
Please do not try to defragment an SSD drive.
Agreed
Dated material unfortunately. I would need to make a rebuttal video to address all the issues and bad advice in some concise way.
Please do. I welcome differing opinions
Any real good advice in this video? I stopped when he said defragment 😂.. mechanical hdd isn't even used in modern computers, aside from nas and backups.
Around 60-70% of my local clients still use mechanical drives. When this advice was given on this video, it was a mechanical drive
missd it sorry
No worries:)
For over a decade file defragmentation has not made one bit of difference to the speed at which any computer ran. Time for so called experts to dump Defrag out of their lexicon.
Minor fragmentation, I agree 100%. When a drive is 56% fragmented, yes it will make a massive difference 👍
Possible, but not likely. Microsoft doesn't care about you once they have your money
The glare from the glasses you wearing is reflecting and distracting.
That was from a few years ago. I've gotten much better about glare since then. Sorry about that, I wss a UA-cam noob 🤷♂️
q...connectivity interrupted
?
Why are you proposing a defrage program when Windows comes with one...?
Because the one that's built into Windows doesn't work very well. I've had dozens, hundreds of Windows PC's over the years that were 20/30/50% fragmented...doesn't sound like Windows is doing a very good job. Now, maybe so on SSD, but not on HDD equipped systems
