  • Will automation free up more time or make things worse? What if we worked even just slightly less than we do now? Is universal basic income the way to go?

    Script:
A hard day of work can bring a lot of satisfaction, but who wouldn’t rather spend their time doing whatever they wanted… or nothing?
What if no one had to work? This is just a thought experiment, but I think it’s a fun discussion! Of course, in order to have things like food, healthcare, water, plumbing, electricity, internet… and you know, everything else… work would have to get done by someone. Or by something.
Technology has already begun to affect employment and will continue to do so as more and more jobs become automated through things like AI and robotics. One study estimates that 1.4 million jobs in the U.S. will be lost to automation by the year 2032. But imagine if everything was done by technology and we were left to do whatever we wanted.
For this to work, things would still have to cost money in order to avoid people taking everything and leaving nothing for others., even though that kinda already happens now, but moving on, And we would have to get this money from our robot overlords… I mean our government.
This is called a universal basic income and is not a new concept. Many countries, including the United States, Brazil, India, and Kenya, have experimented with doing this in some form., Their studies found that this improved health and education, while reducing crime.
But the majority of these trials only included small groups of people, from a few hundred to a few thousand, with income ranging from a small percent of the average income to about $1,000 a month. In order for this to cover the living expenses of the population of an entire country, governments would have to spend a lot more money.
For instance, in the U.S., while the living wage varies greatly from state to state, the median amount is $67,700 per year. For the 258.3 million adults living there, that equals $17.5 trillion each year.
But, while a workless world may not be in our near future, we may at least see a small reduction in the amount of time we spend working. That’s right! The 5-day, 40-hour workweek could soon become a thing of the past. Some countries are trying out, or have even adopted, a 4-day work week, with the number of weekly hours ranging from 32 to 38-all while providing the same salary.,
These countries have found that working less can benefit both the employer and the employee. For instance, one study in Iceland found that working a 35 or 36 workweek led to the same or even improved productivity. Things became more streamlined-meetings that could just be emails, were just emails. And studies show that fewer working hours benefit employees’ health and well-being, such as reduced stress and exhaustion and improved sleep and family lives. It may not be a workless world we’re all dreaming of, but I’ll take a few extra hours of freedom each week!

As someone who, lives in the US and dosent have a job even tho I'm 18 and can't drive I can say that I think people are severely overworked. At least from seeing my dad work a minimum of 50 or 70 hours over 5 or maybe 6 days a week with him being a Bread Route driver for the counties and cities around where we live, I'd say he's severely overworked. To the point of his schedule is loosely like this:
Wake up at 2am, grab a quick snack and lunch cooler before getting ready and leaving.
Do paperwork for about an hour, on Thursday morning get the shipments placed he needs for each store the following week.
Load up the bread truck, work 3am to around 5 or 6pm eating lunch while on his way to the next store.
Do some more paperwork taking stock for everything he couldn't deliver due to them being damaged, and clock out.
    Come home, eat dinner.
go to bed around 8 or 9pm, and do that again tomorrow.
It's gotten to the point where he knows he physically can't keep working like this much longer. He's been working there for anywhere from 7 to 9 years now. He knows it's not good for him mentally and physically to keep working like this. I'm fairly certain at some point his body going to end up just crashing and forcing him to sleep for like a day or so because of how little sleep he gets and how little time he gets to auctually spend on his days off relaxing.
With the little days he has off in a week most of those are spent working on things around the house, working on his car and getting it fixed, or helping my mom with running errands.

I’m a huge fan of the weekend Wednesday work week. You work Monday Tuesday and Thursday Friday. This way you only work 2 days at a time with one or two days between each work block. I personally think this maximizes the energy I have through the week. I mean think about it, even if you work 4 days a week, that first day is still going to feel like a slog as you still got a long set of work days ahead of you. Whereas with this you’re never more than a couple days away from a day off. I mean you’re always either on a day right after some time off, or on a day right before another day off. And having that mid-week refresher helps replenish your energy for the later part of the week.
Of course different people could go for different weekdays off depending on their personal tastes and situations, but weeken Wednesday would be perfect for me personally

Honestly I have a strange opinion about it.
I think automation will be inevitable, which can result in many things in the way we transition towards it.
If we make too fast, then most of the world's population will be jobless and in a economic problem that can turn entire cities to slums, however I do also believe that if we make the transition well, poverty could disappear and instead of material profits, philosophy, arts and science could become the real valuables of the age. Heck, maybe even money will disappear someday and all we would do is search for the progression of our ideas, like the next chapter of your favorite story or how to make a homemade big bang!
I do think that automation is the future, but we still have time to find a great way to implement it. While this happens, i will divert myself with the thought of 1 dollar diamonds and fanfics going to insane levels.

I love the idea of a 4 day work week. It would help so much with home management because right now it feels like I go home from work to do more work. It would also help people do more professional development like going back to school or learning marketable skills. People would also have more time to rest, exercise, and spend time socializing with friends and loved ones which we know improves work performance because you have more balance. More vacation not tied to federal holidays would be great too. I would love to take long weekends going to new cities or federal/state parks.

You know, watching this, I think I can see the benefits to having to work a few less hours in a work week, but as someone who works a full-time job, I don't think that a shorter work week is necessary for me. I know that some people would like something like that, but I personally like working a full week of 40 hours. Also, I don't think that we need to replace human workers with robots in all jobs. The feeling of achieving a job well done and relaxing knowing you did your part fantastically well really helps improve your self esteem. More automation means more repair jobs. Machines eventually break down, or software needs debugging. It would also require alot more designers to come up with new ways to use the automation. It wouldn't be that automation takes all the jobs, but rather automation would take all the physical and dangerous jobs. An acutual person working at a fast food restauraunt would b a thing of the past, other than maybe one person to oversee and quality check the automation. People would be needed more and more in the jobs that design, program, and maintain the automation. We wouldn't lose our jobs, we would just have to find different ones. It would require alot of retraining, but governments already have job assistance training in place.

A lot of factory and warehouse jobs (in the U.S. at least) are now on a four-day work week, which means longer shifts (ten hours per day), but saves in other ways: Driving to and from work only four times a week instead of five saves both time and gas, and eating a packed lunch and/or vending machine snacks four days instead of five is better for health.
Of course, there are down sides as well. Plant managers try to organize rotating four-day schedules into a seven-day week of production, which doesn't come out evenly, and not every shift is going to have the same number of employees. So one day, the plant is short-staffed, and the next day, the parking lot and break rooms are over-crowded. This leads to a lot of mandatory overtime on the off-days, which means during busy seasons, you end up back on a five-day work week, but still ten-hour shifts. This can be exhausting as hell, but on the bright side, that's ten hours worth of overtime pay at time-and-a-half.

Things would be done the same way, but rather than under a paycheck and a lord, with fear of losing that job, with all the others insecurities that our life under capitalism have, they would be done by people WANTING to do that, loving that bc it's what they love and bc it can help people. If a med student survive all the years of studying, with a rent to pay, with bad scheduled exams and all limitations of university it's because he/she loves it, not because of money. For the other exhausting jobs the thing is: if it's really feasible (like carpenter, bricklayer of whatever) there would be someone loving it and doing it bc they like. If not, the society can organize making random people doing the job but for a very limited time, in order to not cause damage to anyone, and everyone will have to do a short time of a tiring work sometimes. Where possible, automation. No lord will ever help us build a better future, any technology will be used to increase productivity and lord income.

I think less work hours would be a great idea. If stress, health issues, and crime all decrease while productivity still increases, why wouldn't we? It'd be putting in less work for even more of a reward. That being said, I think the work week/time should be shortened, not removed completely. It's likely there will always be jobs that require a lot of prior education that humans need to do (creative jobs, engineering jobs designing the automated systems that do other work, etc.) Most people also like to feel as if they've accomplished something, and there are many jobs out there that people like doing (because of routine, innovation, personal interest, importance, etc.) I doubt everyone would want to stop working completely because of this.
Also, I think UBI is going to become inevitable (provided we don't kill off the planet first). Productivity has been and is continuing to increase, helping out all of us (aside from those blocked from the benefits due to inequality and suchlike; although, if we actually decided to improve, so much of that could be fixed). With less work to be done and continuously more rewards, it makes sense to fairly distribute that reward to people.

If you think about it, though, companies would be paying the same whether they hired a human being to do a job, or replaced the human with a robot, and then paid an equal amount into a UBI system to cover the living expenses of their former employee. In fact, since robots can work in harsher climates and don't take bathroom breaks, the company would be saving money on heat/ac and water bills.
If the people who run the companies are smart, they'll realize that the alternative is every company's former employees to just be broke, which means nobody (including themselves) has any customers.

$1000 a month wouldn’t replace my job, but it would certainly reduce stress by a LOT because I wouldn’t have to worry quite as much about bills and could get out of debt sooner… I think that, ideally, societal systems should reduce the REQUIRED work for individuals as much as possible; but even if no person ever needed to work, people would still want to do things. I don’t think the majority of people would want to become like the people in WALL-E who just became media and food consuming potatoes. Some might… but I know if I had no requirement to work in life, I’d have a good deal of projects and outdoor stuff on my list!

I think our culture needs to start transitioning to the belief that there's no real reason to work when everything is automated. I'm surprised not even 2M will be automated by 2032 - that seems low given the jumps being made in the creative space with AI: writing, art, coding, etc. Robots will compound that.
The UBI being a massive expense is just confusing. Sure the government would need to hand out trillions, but what are all those companies doing with the money they don't have to give to employees?? It's not like the money would come from nowhere. The net gain/loss should ideally be even and not cause additional expense. If corporations can function without workers, then maybe what they would've spent on workers should just be funneled straight into UBI.
If UBI is handled this way, I don't think it would even affect inflation.

    • @lazarskrbic
      @lazarskrbic 2 роки тому +1

Even after automatisation there will still be work to be done by humans.
Advancements in creative space have nothing to do with it. AI being able to write and draw won't help in a factory.
Most money not spent on employees still goes somewhere. Taxes, bills, supplies and material etc. plenty of expenses.
With automatisation saving money prices will drop, resulting in less money going to the company in total.
Even then taking money from companies won't be nearly enough to fund the UBI. You still need more, money which will come mainly from taxes. So working people will still need to pay just so the rest can live comfortably without having to do any work.
UBI seems like an awesome idea, bit it's too utopic and unrealistic for today's world

    • @notgate2624
      @notgate2624 2 роки тому

@@lazarskrbic Of course it's unrealistic. That's kind of the point. It'll continue to be unrealistic until changes are made that make it viable. It's a massive change to how the economy functions and would require fundamental changes to it.
Also, if money is being saved from automation then couldn't that also result in lowering the cost of living, making UBI more affordable?
I'm no economist so I just legitimately don't know why rerouting the savings of the companies to the pockets of citizens wouldn't work. The cash flow is the same but just in different directions.

I think instead of things being workless, we should push for people to gain knowledge and focus on skilled labor rather than non-skilled labor. Automation has been removing a lot of non-skilled labor, so we should help people get an education for a skilled labor job. They're a lot harder to automate and provide much more income and satisfaction. Skilled labor can also be much more diverse, as it touches all sorts of fields from medicine, animals, engineering, research, programming, etc. I think it's better to wait a lot longer before Universal Income is implemented because we can still utilize and apply ourselves if we learn a skill.

Universal wages is a short term fix but it is not a realistic solution because people need to work. Working can also reduce anxiety or depression, but too much work isn’t good either. As a conservative, I think that overtime work shouldn’t be mandated at all. It should all be optional for those who want to work and send home people by the end of the day who doesn’t want overtime

While people like me who works in a hospital busted our butts off while dodging a horrible virus that killed millions. It should have been the other way around. The govt should of helped us ESSENTUAL workers and made the ones who lost work to be so desperate to maintain their lifestyle that they'd flood the factories and restaurants and such to get back to some normalcy.

It's very important to know how things like this works and that not everyone has to work the same amount of hours to make the same amount of money. Also the robots taking over physical labor jobs is extremely good for people so that they can take better care of their physical and mental health. They can find better ways to utilize them by owning their own or buying parts of the robots and making a system where we can gain income through them.
