- In this episode of MC Commute, we review the 2022 Kawasaki KLX300SM as we rip the roads and racetrack.
--
The only thing that keeps the 2022 Kawasaki KLX300SM from flying under the radar is the thin arcs of rear tire rubber painting a trail directly to the Motorcyclist HQ front doors. Simply put: Team Green’s unassuming small-bore supermoto uses darkies to brush a picture of a seriously good time on two wheels.
Built upon the versatile and capable KLX300 platform, the SM shares the same basic architecture as its dual sport and off-road siblings, but relishes in a number of supermoto-specific tweaks. The SM receives 17-inch spoked wheels, specifically tuned long-travel suspension, and a larger front brake setup, among other differences.
The KLX300SM’s light and nimble handling makes it an excellent around-town ripper. At a relatively low 304 pounds on the Motorcyclist scales with its 2.0-gallon fuel tank topped to the brim, the KLX is playful and easy to handle for even the less experienced riders. To add to that, an accommodating 33.9-inch seat and relaxed reach to its one-piece motocross-style handlebar promote a comfortable, yet in-control riding position.
That balance of lively personality and control is what translates to confidence in letting the 300SM hang loose. Utilizing decent feel of the KLX’s two-piston caliper clamping to a single 300mm disc up front and single-piston caliper and 240mm disc out back, while slamming backshifts through its well-spaced six-speed gearbox hacks the rear end sideways in true supermoto fashion with forgiving control.
Like the rest of its siblings, the KLX300SM is powered by a 292cc DOHC liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. Ran on our in-house Dynojet 250i dynamometer, the KLX produced a modest 24 hp and 15.6 pound-feet of torque, which makes for approachable delivery and versatile performance, especially in the tight confines of urban riding. And the KLX holds its own on the highway too. At California highway speeds, it spins with minimal vibration felt through the controls and with passing power left in reserve.
Let’s not forget the KLX300SM’s composure on the local kart or supermoto track. Approachable power characteristics and forgiving handling make spinning laps aboard it a hoot, with enough performance to hold its own against proper trackday machines. The ability to practice fundamentals and core riding techniques in a controlled environment is only a plus.
The KLX300SM is a small-bore supermoto with big potential. A smooth blend of approachable performance and pure entertainment at a relatively low cost of $6,199 make it a real masterpiece.

What a great review, and so glad you emphasized that even seasoned riders can have a blast on these smaller slower bikes.
The surpise in the end looked like so much fun! Best part of the video!
I've got a lot of laps on that track. Definitely lots of fun.
*Keep on tuckin', MG!*
Let the good times roll 💚
I started riding in 2003. Currently I have two bikes in my garage - a 2018 MT09, and a 2021 KLX300 Dual Sport. Even on the road, the KLX is a hoot! You can really wring its neck as you get around town having a blast. I couldn't agree with you more about the ABS for true beginners - if Kawasaki had given it switchable (at least in the rear) ABS, then it'd be almost perfect. A new rider might panic when the rear wheel locks up relatively easily and that could cause issues. Great review!
Great review, looks like a really fun bike. What a job.
I just got one last week. I wish the snow would melt already!
Is that 33" standover height when unloaded? So, sitting on the bike will compress the spring = even lower?
Is the ride height adjustable?
Excellent as usual
I probably would’ve bought one of these if I could find one, but I ended up with the DR-Z400SM because of availability and I also really appreciate the taller seat (I’m 6’2”) and the big increase in power.
@@zed5129 it’s well worth it. I’ve had both and that new fuel injected KLX300 is even more gutless than my now gone 2009 KLX250s apparently.
Plus, the DRZ-400SM has loads more torque that is quite noticeable. It just lacks a 6th gear, fuel injection and a modern headlight.
The KLX is a pooch, zero power or torque. Ride one, you’ll see. But it does LOOK cool.😁
@@zed5129 "You mean I gotta put on a choke for 20 seconds at start up AND turn a valve at fill up for only 40% more horsepower and fully adjustable suspension?? I'm too lazy for that!!!"
if those things are an 'inconvenience' than pulling a clutch must be a nightmare for you lol!
Nice review I love my KLX300 was wondering how it compared to the SM. Not having ABS is a bummer but not a deal breaker
Got mine 6 months ago and 2500 miles later, still loving it! If you're considering the SM, definitely look into Yoshimura's slip on exhaust. It made a world of difference. Great review, thx!
How much increase in HP and torque did the money spent return?
Only problem is you can’t find them in stock anywhere
@@easyfromtnbtw3555 , have you tried webike in Japan? I have ordered from them for lighter parts than an exhaust but with the conversion and shipping it was competitive with prices in the states that were out of stock.
@@Dave-sw2dm no I haven’t I think I’m prob gonna go with Delkavic they already have the o2 sensor bung
Nice review. I would want ABS. Otherwise, a perfect bike for general riding!! Thank you MC!!
I had the Klx250sm years ago. I had a blast with it. That was almost 10 years ago and it had that same instrument cluster.
But it's adequate, don't you think?
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Keeps price down too.
I mean it has a tacho, which is more than even the fancy 690/701 have.
@@johntyson Exactly.
I wanted a KLX250F, but the closest one was 10 hours away so I ended up with the KLX250S. June 2021 I went on the search for a KLX300SM and found one 5 hours away. 4000 miles on it and no regrets.
No wheelies?
Its so sad that this will not come to europe, it sounds like exactly what i want for my first bije
+Motorcyclist Magazine
Van you guys review Kawasaki Z H2 and KTM 1290r Super Dukie?
Can you ride 2 up on these things
75 is respectable tbh, but i might want something to go with moving traffic in michigan, around 80-85 LOL
I hate that its not coming to Sweden. I will probably have to settle with the 230
My question is can you put the dirt wheels on the 300sm like you can put sm wheels on the 300 dual sport
Yes sir i just did this exactly. As long as u keep it the same rim size! Put on some 30% dirt 70 st and its perfect
Hell I like it a lot 👍
I'm a bigger person, would this bike still work for me
SOLD!!!
What's the difference between this years and last years model?
Good fuel efficient motorbike let the good times roll with 300sm.
I'm thinking about buying a 2022 Suzuki DRZ 400, which is also super moto. I'm not sure that the Kawasaki will give the same "hooligan" inspiration. Thoughts?
Stay away from both. Buy a Yamaha WR250R and don’t look back. Buy SM rims for it.
The KLX is a poochy dinosaur from the early ‘90’s.
The DRZ is carbureted and cold blooded. It also needs a 6th gear something awful.
Get the Dr.Z. the WR is gutless compared to the 'Zuki', and with almost 40 horsepower you can gear the Dr.Z to fit highway or trail riding. Guys ride 15/39 gears on the highway swear by it. Other pros even run 16/39 getting the bike to over 100mph, but they admitted they had to clutch more on the single track stuff.
My buddy has has his for 12 years. He's got 40k miles and has driven that bike across the US on the freeways, and competed in the Baja 500 with it - all pretty much stock. He finally sprung for the FCR this year lol.
got a 2021 klxsm and the stator blew out at 1200 miles... was under warranty though
Bummer. 4000 miles coming up on one year and bike has been flawless. Just replaced rear tire but have been doing gravel and some hard pack trails. Put another IRC on, but might try some 80/20 tires next year.
I’m 250 pounds. Would this work for me? I don’t want to struggle up hills.
Get a KTM or husky 690/701
I’m on the fence between this and the Versys X 300.Not a bad spot to be in considering you can’t go wrong either way.Great review. Thanks.👍🏻
Which one did you choose?
@@Dave-sw2dm
Versys x300.
@@ErrorMoose
Love the V85 TT👍🏻👍🏻
Seems like the little Kawi has alot to offer for the price range. The biggest question I had was how many hours between valve service intervals ? That 300 has to take a beating being wide open frequently.
Valve check at 7500
Stuck between this and the crf300l rally
Dude same
I wish this was a 500 single. I'd buy one then instead of my 390 Duke.
Great review.
That's a bike KTM already make themselves... Almost. And it'll probably be way more fun than Kawasaki's offering. It's just the KTM way. 😃
@@starfox_wr-45e93 Which one is it, please? I am aware of the 390 Duke. Anything bigger from KTM is a twin.
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o the KTM 690/husqvarna 701 is a mono
@@stephanep.431 Very true, but a 500 single would be perfect in Thailand. The 690/701 isn't available here. I didn't make myself clear.
It really is fine the way it is. It will wheelie, stay ahead of normal traffic, go interstate speeds, and is light. How much more weight will a 500cc bike bring since other components might have to be beefed up to handle the additional power, acceleration, and subsequent weight.
Can get a gear indicator little pricey but if you want one there is an option.
Sweeeet!
Does anyone know if there’s a difference between the Kawasaki klx sm 21 and 22?
Nope, no diff
Shoulda given me a call before going to Apex. I could lap my NSR around to make the 300 look faster 🤣
Nice
I love seeing a new SM bike, but the power number is disappointing. 3 less than a stock wr250r/x? Just kind of odd. It’s not like the Yamahas are particularly high strung or anything.
I doubt you'll notice that, even side by side. I'd hazard a guess, the 300 has better torque figures and an even less stressed motor. That should mean, longer service intervals and longer life, one would hope.
Also a great reason to fit a filter and end can. should get most of that 3hp . This could do with a better exhaust note anyway. Zero brap, is more the issue imho 😁
@@starfox_wr-45e93 the torque is the same. It's not a huge complaint, i just think it's odd.
I traded the WR250R for the KLX300SM. Power feels similar on both. CG feels lower on the Kaw and it feels lighter when riding, very eager to turn, super nimble. I like that its a lot easier to get feet on the ground too, flat footing at 6 ft tall.
@@johnwhitten6958 Hows the suspension compare?
Lower budget Yams always seem to have the cheapest softest they can buy. This KLX seems to have a decent spec in that regard.
That hp seems a bit low. My crf250 is supposed to be 24 hp. Somethings not right.
the bike is a lot fun. bigger petrol tank next time please. Agree most the comments here. If you haven't got one you need to get one thats how much fun they are.
1:33 dat voice crack
Idea for a new charity..SKIDS FOR KIDS!! great charity name
I appreciate the video and your effort but my lord dude who wants ABS on the super Moto? Doesn't even make any sense
Most all newby riders wants a b s, they don't want to bother to learn to use the brakes properly
2023 when?
I took this bike for a spin a few months ago at a Kawasaki demo day. I've owned Kawasaki Ninja 1000's, downsized to the 2020 Ninja 650 KRT.
This bike just puts a permanent smile on your face. Our lead rider was going through a yellow light and changed his mind last minute. So much so that he stopped completely sideways! I ended up doing a stoppie! The trail instructor pulled up to me, gave me a thumbs up and a smile. The front brake on that thing is awesome. I didn't panic. It was just grabbing and grabbing. The tires were very tacky.
Definitely getting one. I might just get rid of the Ninja 650 for this. The are already bag options from Hepco Becker. I'm a daily rider so even a set of Koso heated grips (don't laugh). Maybe an IBS oversize tank.
This bike is a winner and won't be sitting on a showroom floor.
So do they send all of you guys to the William Shatner school of speaking?
Yes. They. Do.
Nice but $1,000 more than the Kawasaki Z400.
I don’t get it. Z400 way better.
Pricing on bikes does not make sense, IMHO, even when staying with same brand like Z400 vs. this bike. The Z400 has to be more expensive to produce....
@@ws8080This bike does have a tuned sussy boi and it’s fully adjustable. The Z400 does not.
This is a factory track bike, the Ninja/Z400 is not.
Abs on a SM isn't a good idea.
👍👍👍🤙👊🇺🇲
i want to have a motorcycle can you help me any amount you give is much appreciated, its like late realization that i love bike when i watch youtube videos that they are traveling, i feel like i really want to have a bike its like it can cure my loneliness and mental health if i travel alone to see the beauty of the world, i just want to see the other side of the world and erase the thought of suicide inside of my mind. i hope you can see this and help me
It’s cool, but should have been a 450cc🤘🏻
Great review. Please don’t adopt Waheed’s verbal cadence. It doesn’t work for either of you.
I love my cadence. It is the best.
LOL.
@@AdamWaheed you do a great job
@@steveparish9210 Thanks pal.
@@AdamWaheed You can pull it off. I don't know how but you do. Loved your video on the BMW S1000RR the other day. Love how you don't act pretentious, went out in the beginner group, didn't act all better than them. Keep up the good work!
Wheels are too small....no thanks.
So take the regular bike instead of the SM model then.
Dude it’s a sm model
It NEEDS ABS as an option!
it's a hooligan bike, you can't slide the rear with ABS.. Not sure why you would need ABS on this bike. People have been riding bikes like this for over 50 years without ABS. A skilled rider knows not to lock the brakes on a slippery surface, it's called brake modulation.
Kawi should be ashamed of themselves for offering a 30-year old motorcycle design (frame/engine- look it up) for the uninformed in 2022. This bike has ZERO power or torque and wayyy overpriced. It’s quite laughable actually.
U buy ktm for 13k 😂😂😂😂
Can you guys come up with your own intro? Copying Z counts hitting the camera with ur hand……. Be ur self! Don’t imitate.
Agreed. Your intros are much more inventive.
