I read in the forums you can install the Helix ON TOP OF the spare tire (just order the $7 longer stem holding the spare). So, my dealership did just that a few weeks ago. My dealership was freaking out how clean it looked, and how the bass was even BETTER sitting higher in the trunk. This isn't just a subwoofer, it's a crossover. Hi Scott. When I bought my car I worked a deal to get the Helix with installation and dongle programming for $500. I thought it was decently fair and went for it.
Thanks for inspiring me to do this upgrade by myself, bought my gti round about the same time as you bought yours and can't believe I waited this long to do it, I had no idea it even existed!
I also rented a dongle and it made an instant difference. I had to flatten my equalisers and remove audio enhancements on my phone to make it all sound perfect. 57 was the much better tune as you hear vocals from the A pillar tweeters on the mib2. But you know all this already 😂
Glad I could help! Ironically, I removed my Helix to make room for more ham radio equipment. I can put it back since the wiring harness is still in the car. But, to be honest, the louder exhaust note makes it difficult to hear a huge difference at my current listening levels. Thanks for visiting!
I swapped the helix subwoofers with two JL Audio 6w3v3-4, wired in parallel, powered by an alpine MRV-M500 that’s receiving its signal from the helix unit. I was completely blown away by the amount of clean bass these things produce, almost on par with the two JL Audio 10w3v2-d4’s that I’ve had in my other car for about a decade. Sadly, this makes it even more noticeable how dull the rest of the speakers in my 2018 gti sound.
Chris - I need to sit in a car with a crisp sound stage. Otherwise, it's hard for me to know if my stereo is dull or if my old hearing is culprit. Someone recently sat in my car and said it sounded very detailed and bright. I'll have to try another car to be certain. Thanks for visiting. -Scott
I had helix boot version in my Polo 6R. Definitely sounds great. I’ve upgraded to a Golf GTD. stock speakers are little better but not great when it comes to bass. I’m looking to get spare wheel version fitted soon.
I have the Fender Premium Audio in GSW from '15. Very happy with it and better imaging than my old 3500 thousand custom system in my Saab 900T coupe. I had a fosgate 360.6 under back seat, 8" mbquart mids, 4.25 mbq highs and sealed jL audio 12" sub, audio control preamp, pioneer 12 CD changer under trunk. It was amazing! Getting this programmed by my dealer was a nightmare. I got them to throw this in with the deal when I bought a new 2017 Jetta SEL which was nice! I think off the bat I had a faulty Helix amplifier and the subwoofer didn’t produce bass. I found someone local to me on VWVortex with the same Jetta and a Helix to come to the dealer with me to demonstrate to service how it was supposed to sound. Sure enough mine was not putting out bass from the subs. They replaced my Helix amp but still could not figure out the DSP presets. The service guy was convinced the higher the number on the programming dongle, the more bass, lol. I also found out they wired the left and right channels backwards which they also had to fix. No idea how they did that when it is a plug and play harness. I ended up going to a different VW dealer that had the Helix dongle and they happily programmed my Helix to the correct Jetta Mk6 DSP. Very pleased with this setup, huge improvement over stock audio and overall soundstage. It is super important the correct DSP is programmed into the amp via the dongle or else your audio will sound wacky. ALSO REMOVE THE RJ-45 JUMPER PRE-INSTALLED ON AMP. It sets the sound stage for right-hand drive cars. Highly recommend this for non-Fender or non-Dynaudio Volkswagens!!
That first dealer you dealt with was staffed by buffoons! I just flashed another GTI owner's car this week. It took less than a minute. I had him sit inside the car as I flashed his amp so that he could hear the immediate difference. Glad you got it sorted.
That's a very nice piece of information! A Bought my helix about 2 years ago. But I live in Brazil and none of the dealerships that in my area do this kind of service. I wish I could rent a dongle from someone in Brazil or any country near me. Thnaks man! Great channel!
I ordered a dongle, P/N: DKS051419A, through eBay. It wasn't terribly expensive; plus, you may be able to recover some of the expense by programming other cars. Perhaps you can acquire one through eBay? Thanks for your comments and thanks for visiting! -Scott
Great video. I got the subwoofer installed at the dealership and I think that they messed up the programming because rear speakers sound really bad and there’s only bass when you sit at the second row. I’ve ordered the programming dongle and hopefully it will improve when I program it
@@StealthGTI No, I haven’t. I’m actually trying to program the helix right now and for some reason the dongle won’t turn on when I connect it. I have the ignition on so I don’t understand what could be wrong
@@Joe-cy5hm - The ignition doesn't need to be on, only the stereo. You can actually run the dongle without a key nearby. Strange that you're not able to see the dongle work.
Could be out of phase too since it's a programed DSP amp of a very basic variety so channel polos polarity can be muddled if software is messed up at all. Just one possible situation anyway bud. Hope it's fixed now.
I think it's the newer B model that's pre programmed for golf 7. Btw I bought the 8" from the 7.5 for my gti and the quality of the screen and the more modern looking centre console is well worth it
I recorded this video long after the B models were introduced. Even today, my "customers" notice a difference when I flash their Helix modules. I intentionally have them put on music and listen from the driver's seat while I flash. They notice. Thanks for visiting!
Bought one of these many months ago and after unsuccessfully searching for someone local with the dongle, I ordered one of those also and then finally found a free day for the install. Unfortunately I hit a rub right away. My car doesn't have the unit in the glove box that all of the install videos show the Helix plugging into. I did call a local shop that specializes in European cars like mine, in fact they've done some great work on my car in the past and I trust them, but even they told me they couldn't install this unit. I'm not sure what to do at this point.
Does VW's website show it as being compatible with your vehicle? If yes, then it's likely that the back of your head unit has the same connector(s) as the glovebox unit on other cars, except for the remote display. If that's true, then I see little reason why Helix would not work. You just have a different degree of work to do to get the job done since (I think) you'd have to disassemble parts of the center console to access the back of the stereo. Good Luck!
@@StealthGTI Yes .. I found out that the amp is attached to the head unit instead of being in the glove box. All is well. Now I just need to find a few spare hours.
@@StealthGTI I finally got it done! I was just very confused with the wiring until I finally just made up my mind to watch LHG's video over and over and over, even though I can't stand watching videos when people hand hold their cameras/phones. It disturbs me. Hah. But I soldiered through, cussed a bit, made a quick trip to the auto parts place for a de-pinning tool, and got it done. The only thing I was unable to do was update the dongle. I just used the 57 code that came programmed on the card with the dongle I bought. The executable I download from the link you provide on your website doesn't seem to want to recognize my SD card - or I'm doing it wrong. Probably the latter.
@@mattb4rd - The dongle should have more than just file 57. Connect the device and energize the radio (no need for ignition). The dongle should light with whatever file was last loaded. It sounds like yours will say "57." Rotate the knob to see if the numbers change. If they do, then you have more files on the card. Choose a file, then press and hold the known until the dongle's display flashes. You're done; a new file is loaded. I don't recall which car you have. But, if the dongle doesn't have a file for your car, then you can fiddle around and try different files until you hear one that you like. Let me know if that works. Take care!
@@StealthGTI I have a 2019 GTI ..57 is the correct file. and yes, the dongle does have other files, but I believe, like yours, 57 is the correct file. That's what I flashed to it and it does sound good.
I found someone selling a helix subwoofer however the wiring harness is missing since he sold the car with it. Do you know if I can get the wiring harness by itself? If so where? I appreciate your help!
I had a website visitor share with me that he found this part to work: www.audiotec-fischer.de/en/match/adaptors-harnesses/pp-mqs-5.4. It's expensive, to say the very least. Good Luck!
Does this equipment work for a 2017 GTI polo? I would like to install it and not sacrifice a spare tire. I see that you were able to do it at Golf Gti. In a polo gti it will be possible?
I don't know. I have no idea if the connectors are the same as in North America. If your local dealer sells this, then it may be compatible. Good Luck!
My 2016 GTI volume stops going up at about 60-70% of max volume. It seems like there’s some type of limiter on it. Do you know if this will fix that or do you know another fix for that problem?
Hello - I think that's somewhat normal behavior for a lot of lower power head units. They do that to get more "oomph" in the early movement of the volume dial... "WOW" factor for the owner, right? ;-) The Helix upgrade will not resolve that; it will only increase overall volume. As a result, "70%" is quite loud. I think I indexed my add-on subwoofer amp's gain at 75% on the stereo. Thanks for visiting. -Scott
No. I've read too many reports about replacement speakers sounding shrill, even with speakers that are said to be for VWs. Helix engineers contoured the DSP with the factory speakers in play. Replacing the speakers changes the dynamic and, as a result, skews what Helix engineers accomplished. Thanks for visiting.
I love helix products most of their stuff is still made in Germany the it's just simply amazing then they're cheaper amplifiers are simply simply so good for what they cost I have their highest and stuff and their entry level amazing their speakers are so affordable and sound so good. I have there aftermarket stuff not the license through Volkswagen but I heard the subwoofer and I thought it was good 👍
Good stuff! I had shared a review on my website that features this quote from a VWVortex user: “All of you should be VERY happy with what you got for the money. Especially those that paid $250. Yes, certain aspects of the Helix could be better, but now that I have perspective on the sound of the Helix compared with the system I just installed that cost 4 times more, I really appreciate the work and engineering that went into this bespoke sound upgrade solution for our vehicles. Helix is an award-winning company renowned for its super high sound quality and they have packed a lot of their intellectual property into this amp. The value is especially surprising when you look at how small the amp is and realize there is a built-in DSP with EQ, time alignment, etc!” I'm still very pleased with my setup. Thanks for visiting!
@@StealthGTI you look at these European companies that make audio equipment they're actually better deal and well it's always with audio equipment that they are better than mass produced stuff and cheaper most of the time for what you get
is it possible to get the wire harness on its own? Or do any other brands make a wiring harness like this? looking for a solution of taking sound signal to the back without cutting any wires
I'm pretty certain it is not available on its own. When I bought my unit at a deep discount, I felt the harness alone was nearly worth the cost. HAHA! I, too, hate cutting factory wires. Good Luck!
I don't think the files for the Mk7 Golf/GTI have been updated in a couple of years. Have a look at www.volkswagen-accessories.com/en/product-ranges/infotainment/soundsystem.html# to download the most current files. Thanks for visiting.
Do you know if your programmer dongle programs the Revision B system properly? I just pulled the trigger on one and now I'm skeptical about the programming part of the installation.
It does work with both versions. The differences between the original and "Rev B" versions is internal, probably a change of supplier for internal parts instead of a true redesign. See this video where I (coincidentally) jump between programming my original Helix and someone else's Rev B: ua-cam.com/video/43nMbBJMqog/v-deo.html. Thanks for visiting.
Read the article on your website, noticed you used the pre revision part number which uses the PP50DSP. Did you discover any differences between it and the PP62DSP?
Corrodiate - I did not do a comprehensive study of both units. I just know that the 62 replaced the 50 and I'm inclined to believe they're very similar due to them being compatible with many of the same VW models. Odds are Helix simply upgraded some internal parts due to supply changes, but kept the connections and functionality the same. Just a guess, though. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
I haven't seen the new unit in person. But I suspect it is very similar and made to use the same wiring. I'd love to meet someone with a new new Helix someday so I can have a look. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
Hey how are you ? I have a 2020 r line Jetta that already came installed with the hex in it I was just wondering how would I put the bass up and to program it
Your Helix should already be pre-programmed. The bass is tailored from the "SOUND" menu in your infotainment system. Unfortunately, Helix's subwoofer cannot be controlled independently. If you're asking how to get even more bass, and the lower kind, check out the 500-watt subwoofer system that I added to my Helix: ua-cam.com/video/2-f6BPnmdlM/v-deo.html. Thanks for visiting!
Hello, I installed the Helix on my Golf 7 R but I met an issue with the DSP. In fact I tried to follow all video I found and the documentation of the DSP to active the sound but (after the setting program "57") when I power off the discovery pro, the amplifier cut too and no sound in all system anymore. To discover the sound I have to unplug the power of the amplifier and plug it again until the time I power off the discovery again... If anybody can help me. Thank you very much.
WOW! That's an interesting problem. Is this on a North American car? I don't know if it matters. Also, you re-pinned the power cable, right? You said you followed all directions, but I still have to ask since your problem reads like a power issue. -Scott
Hello,I have seen you video and as you recommended bought the Helix audio system.but in my opinion it did not add a lot to the saund quality i had before, the lows and such are missing,i expected a different effect.i had a vw with dynaudio system and it simply cannot be compared, the sound was way better.is it maybe the case that it does not play as good because it is not programed yet?
I think you'll hear a good difference once the unit is programmed. Everyone I've ever flashed has commented on the difference. There's a link to a dongle rental thread in the video description. Renting one and programming it yourself will ensure that it is done. Good Luck!
Ooops! I just noticed that I featured a photo of Dynaudio speakers instead of Helix. I instinctively found a photo that closely depicts what's currently in the car instead of Helix. How many of you noticed? ;-)
Steeven - Searching the P/N: 000-051-419-B, on VW's accessories website indicates that Helix is not compatible with the eGolf. I'm not sure why it's incompatible, but this news seems to warrant a visit to your dealer for clarification. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
I've read elsewhere that it is compatible. Thinking about checking dealers around Seattle to see how much they'll sell and maybe install for. A couple of the installs I watched seemed like a fair bit of work (I used to do installs in the 90's, so not totally unfamiliar, just lots of plastic to remove...everyone has their own line with paying for labor) I think it had to do with the missing spare tire in eGolf, but it totally fits. You can find photos and testimonial...
Filip - Thanks for the note. I intentionally did not record a sample because no recording will do the system justice. I don't think I've ever heard a live stereo recording in UA-cam that was both free of distortion and sounded so great that it convinced me to buy a product. ;-) All I can say about Helix is it's better than stock, but not as deep as a larger subwoofer, which is why I added a different subwoofer after installing Helix. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
I lack the recording equipment to set this apart from any other subwoofer recording. I'm happy to do demo's in person, though. Thanks for visiting. -Scott
Hi Stealth... I have a 2019 SEL Tiguan, and the stock 6 speaker system... really missing the Fender that was in my older SEL... torn between the Helix ($560 plus install is basically $800, don't feel confident installing myself)... or spending a little more on a 10" and a separate amp... thoughts?
Blaise - It depends on your preferences. Are you happy with your mids/highs and looking for just a boost of bass? If just a bass boost, the 300-watt subwoofer system I first installed could be done for $450 in parts, plus installation and box. Just tap into the speaker outputs at the head unit. That was Rockford Fosgate Punch stuff. I now have a 500-watt Rockford Fosgate Power setup that is about double the cost. If you're looking for improvement all around (highs, mids, and lows), then the $800 installed price of Helix isn't bad at all, especially if you like the MIB2 interface. Check out my Helix long-term review, which includes a good quote from a 3rd party: stealthgti.com/2018/10/04/long-term-review-helix-sound-upgrade/. If you require professional installation, then it's going to cost whether it's done by your VW dealer or another shop. "Pay to Play," right? ;-) Thanks for visiting! -Scott
@@StealthGTI Thanks Scott... The Mids / Highs are ok... could be clearer but don't suck... I have been turning the bass down and highs up and its much more clear, just then lacking bass... I guess the thing is if i put in just a sub, I'm gonna have ok clarity and more bass... if I go Helix, its more clarity, but much less bass than like a stand alone 10" sub, right? ... so that is helix vs just sub... do you have any thoughts on running a different 4 channel amp for all the speakers? or is that just too messy?.... by MIB2 interface do you just mean the stock screen interface? I know if I run a different amp I may lose my fader etc... Thanks Blaise
I guess my last question is... can you install the Helix and then later add an additional sub? is there roomy to hook up both? would that work? I know I like good sound and I have never installed or added anything myself. Thanks again.
@@blaisedelacroix1832 - Sorry for the delay. I've had a busy few days. Unless you play your music quite loudly, I don't think you'll need a 4-channel amp over a Helix upgrade.
-Scott
Sold me on it. Great job explaining!
Great! Good Luck and thanks for visiting! -Scott
Great video. I got the subwoofer installed at the dealership and I think that they messed up the programming because rear speakers sound really bad and there’s only bass when you sit at the second row. I’ve ordered the programming dongle and hopefully it will improve when I program it
Have you upgraded any of your speakers? If yes, Helix will make them sound way too bright. Thanks for visiting.
Great thanks have boot version and dongle programmed sound great ;) great great review
Thanks for your comments! -Scott
Good Luck!
Does anyone know where I can purchase the amp alone to the helix sub? I have the same one and the amp blew 3 out of the 4 channels
Try contacting Helix. They are very responsive to e-mail. I got a response from the president of the company herself. Thanks for visiting!
-Scott
Did you ever try the Helix with aftermarket speakers?
I have there aftermarket stuff not the license through Volkswagen but I heard the subwoofer and I thought it was good 👍
Good stuff! I had shared a review on my website that features this quote from a VWVortex user:
“All of you should be VERY happy with what you got for the money. The value is especially surprising when you look at how small the amp is and realize there is a built-in DSP with EQ, time alignment, etc!”
I'm still very pleased with my setup.
Good Luck!
Can you provide a new version of the programming code (updated!)?
How many of you noticed? ;-)
No one? Good! ;-)
Hi, do you know if the Helix sound system works well on a Egolf ? Is it the same program? Hope my dealer will know about that part! Thanks
Steeven - Searching the P/N: 000-051-419-B, on VW's accessories website indicates that Helix is not compatible with the eGolf. I'm not sure why it's incompatible, but this news seems to warrant a visit to your dealer for clarification. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
Steeven Sirois www.speakev.com/threads/helix-audio-upgrade-works-on-egolf.141843/
I've read elsewhere that it is compatible. Thinking about checking dealers around Seattle to see how much they'll sell and maybe install for. A couple of the installs I watched seemed like a fair bit of work (I used to do installs in the 90's, so not totally unfamiliar, just lots of plastic to remove...everyone has their own line with paying for labor)
I think it had to do with the missing spare tire in eGolf, but it totally fits. You can find photos and testimonial...
Great video, very well made with good information. Would be nice with a sound clip aswell though. Thanks!
I've never felt the need to go beyond 50 watts per channel, except for the sub. Also, I think you'll be surprised by Helix's bass output. I know I was. Yes, MIB2 = stock screen. I'll answer your other questions in your other post.
@@blaisedelacroix1832 - I'm sure anything is possible, but I wouldn't do both. Check out other videos in my channel and my blog entry at stealthgti.com/electronics-suite/ to see how I added a 500W subwoofer system to my Helix setup. In my case, I REPLACED the Helix subwoofer with a larger sub and added a dedicated amp for the new sub. I still enjoy Helix's DSP and front imaging, but have added deeper, more powerful bass. See my blog for details.
Thank you for the detailed info (good videos, subscriber) - Mk7.5 GTI got the Helix installed at the dealer, reprogrammed, still have my spare and used the rebate coupon (thank you StealthGTI) - unfortunately sound is like shoes (gotta try them on) not happy with the outcome, so very interested in your sub and amp upgrade to the Helix.

I dont care which factory upgraded system you have even dynaudio which make good gear the helix sub with its mdf construction instead of plastic crud is going to be worth switching out the spare tyre sub if you can get the sub and box by itself. 😊

Hello, do you know if the helix subwoofer will work on the 2019 GTI SE? Thanks in advance.
Assuming that any 2019 GTI SE will come with an "available" Fender premium audio system, the Helix upgrade will NOT work since Fender already includes an external amp and subwoofer. Thanks for visiting! -Scott
The SE doesn’t come with a fender audio system. I believe it come with 6 speakers. Will that work? Thanks for the reply.
@@josephbrenyah4910 - According to VW's website, Fender is an option on the SE. It seems to me that dealers will order their SEs loaded to maximize profit. However, if your SE does not have Fender, then Helix will work. Fair enough?
Yes thank you.
