Thanks from Germany for making that video! It was good to see that you had the focus on the wiring part. That is exactly what I was looking for!
ya buddy. the wiring seems more complicated in all the instruction, but once you really get your head around it, its a bit simple.
Servus aus Deutschland, Michael hast du das schon eingebaut? Wie ist das Fazit? Lohnt es sich das up zu graden?
Thanks man!! With your instructions are sooooooo easy to connect all. Instructions included are crazy.
sure bro.
I had this system in my 2 door mk7 gti. I rented a programmer and made a huge difference in sound, all the harshness was gone and the sound stage was aligned properly. While the sound was decent, it has NO deep bass, there is a high pass filter on the sub cutting out the low frequencies significantly. At first it didn't bug me, but then it started getting irritating. After some research I decided to buy a 5 channel amp, a line out converter, and a dsp. I was originally going to replace the system, but I decided to improve on the unit. I didn't want to go to crazy, so my goals were to keep the factory speakers and the Helix subwoofer. After I installed the equipment, the sound (before eq and time alignment) was much more powerful and clear. The subwoofer definitely is capable of deep bass......it was severely crippled by the helix amp. I recorded some measurements with a mic and EQ'd the front 2 speakers and sub (not running rear fill). After finalizing the system, the difference in sound now is MASSIVE! The sound is perfectly balanced and the soundstage is incredible. I can't believe I was able to achieve this quality of sound from the factory speakers.
thats exactly what i wanted to do if i was gonna keep the car forever. i was worried about how to tap into the signal for sub, all the way from glove. did you use parts of the stock helix harness, or run custom wires? I'd love to see a full video about it honestly.
@@LastHumansGarage I'll try to make a video sometime soon...but what I did is use the helix harness and bought a computer ATX 20-pin connector from ebay to make a harness extension and connected the wires to the Audiocontrol LC7I line-out converter, and then from there I sent the signal via RCA to a Dayton DSP-408, and then to the 5 channel amp. This is the writeup (forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?9107681-DIY-Helix-Dongle) I used to make the extension, but I cut the wires to use as the signal source to the LC7I instead of rerouting back into the harness as the OP did in the thread. Then i ran the wiring from the battery to the amp/dsp/LC7I to give them power. I used this connector to tap into the helix subwoofer (www.ebay.com/itm/8-Pin-Male-to-Female-PC-CPU-Motherboard-Power-Supply-Connector-Adapter-Cable-Bea/174083087447?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item2888291c57:g:WIYAAOSwZ~ldu~wu&enc=AQAEAAACUBPxNw%2BVj6nta7CKEs3N0qWu9HUhpt2JLJWXLfi40sZPst5RwFX%2B8sHqoaIjsP3nYdR6j4q3DVoblinpW8pNcwqYDhqqt%2BBa%2BMh7aXC5EvlqPKT%2BeVPOOhqJ51W4CDd1%2BKU9y4pLHsZY%2Bgad7FD%2BSl75LMsmrN08Dg03o1%2FwztTQMEQxydb8PHLPcQ9fTg%2FWPS5NSzXK1Etpx0E%2FArW4a%2BdvuL1zkKddcCw4OqVfX76c4XbZQF4odORnNTZ8SR%2BqOUbVMk1lZMWsLRxhBrfKq1M8mZzOEK4M%2FtlY%2FsTdnnPAPJ7pxNXx74HoqNjs%2Beiu%2ByC0aXSUj3WaoRvLsx0ptmSidUBTcvNVLR6eyRFFZ6P118jWpWrU6VWqhgvLCBqW%2FCxqHzj8tFOGsFH0VBR2%2BQhNJq%2BBFOVlWLumkGwqp4d8LaIYcuba1ltQmnf5Lcll4f0BQOcW19ysyy10z%2FHFWkpviMDiNm7ind9hd0CbJVWizr720HCMP4sfhqi8xHZbLFggcXYgrNs2ZNB7NgfbXKnZ2pJMdGFluR%2B4zXUwurm9kEjuBbXGJU7Y8n1cEyjmgsJ3wvTWzAt7C7SXTn%2Be19DJhP7P4I%2FOsa4VW4Ty4Nngu5r%2BF6PnP%2BHdUNSECcmPuKBGaCFRrUF0%2BFHXoL%2F7oypc4V5yREdaTckwhGZC99e%2Fowqk0fG0l9kw7tmipyy9QumXHxph0sBi2Pi4gFIXAKYMqKl5T4NhxV3eafj8vHTJFmOOyha%2BuW5H%2B0evfY26Q4EuPv5qtYVwuuEAmzOadCU%3D&checksum=1740830874473673a86b3597413bba31da332ad7d342). Best of all, it is completely reversible if you need to remove it for any reason....just unplug the extension cable :).
damn dude... thats what i woulda done.. i didnt want the interior speakers amped.. i just wanted the sub only.
@@LastHumansGarage That's how it starts lol, then the upgrade bug hits...but now I'm happy with the system and won't be upgrading anymore.
@@Benihana81 I just got my Helix sub and I am thoroughly disappointed... tempted to sell it and build my own system. Things to note, I haven't had it programed yet. Does it really change the sound that much? Does the programming matter if you get an aftermarket amp? I would be willing to perform the mods you did to get the sound I desire. Are you completely satisfied with it now??? Any distortion??? Change my mind! lol
Great video, appreciate it. Really helped out a lot. Thanks… I didn’t use either of the yellow/black adapters which really does nothing but extend the two wires and insert 2 more connection points. I think by not using them, that also resulted in less wires and connectors to hide behind it which made pushing the radio back in much easier. I Installed it today, 8/21/2022 in my 2017 GTI S. Picked up the part for $449 from Marietta VW. VW also has a 15% rebate on it at this time. Rented the dongle from the Mk7 forum to program. Can’t wait, sounds much better. I also kept my spare tire by using the longer spare tire mount. Again thanks for the video!
Congrats man. Good tip on less wiring.
Thanks for this video series, I just installed a Helix in my Arteon. Very similar to your install so it was very helpful.
Great to hear!
You don't need to chain all the yellow/black harnesses in, those are for older models that don't have the Quadlock connector. Just plug the car's terminals into the empty housing and plug that directly into the Helix harness.
thanks bro
Great install demo, think that a lot more people will be doing this now as you’ve given them a detailed walkthrough👍🏼 much appreciated!
thanks mate, it wasn't "hard", but routing the wiring was the biggest pain
What if - you don't use those two yellow and black additional cable connectors?? Just curiousas to what will happen? Please let me know. Sick video by the way!
no clue. let us know.
Hi, I have battery drain from my radio circuit, do you have any idea why, any direction to looking for?
Vw Polo 1.8L 2016 with ofc the helix sound system as vw accessory. (my battery is brand new and have been checked, and wire seems in perfect condition. Ihave this system since 3+ years, nothing changed since then, idk why i've got a drain now.. can't find any solution on google, hope I get more chances here)
Thanks in advance for any kind of help,
Have a nice day! :)
Nico
Nice job brother. By the way, was there any stock subwoofer in your spare well? I have the Dynaudio (European market) option, comes also with a subwoofer, which seats nicely in the spare wheel. Super nice packaging from VW, but the bass is so so.. But the sound quality is good, super clear.
no, any GTI with a base stereo does not come with a subwoofer. And the Helix is rumored better than the Fender setup by people who have heard both. The bass is huge on this thing with 80's rap.
@@LastHumansGarage NA gets Fender, but I wouldn't be surprised that the sub is identical except for the badge.. The Helix must be better than the stock sub, as the stock bass is not impressive at all. The extra Amp plus solid sub housing makes the difference.
i doubt the sub is identical. helix and fender are different companies.
yes the key to all of this is the amp.. it sounds like 4x as loud and clear.
LastHumansGarage fender being panasonic, helix being vw
Awesome! Where will you put the spare tire?
I heard with the longer bolt Volkswagen sales you can fit the spare tire
no spare. i have an air pump and patch kit.
@@LastHumansGarage You wouldn't believe this but this morning on the way to the office I had a complete flat due to a nasty piece of glass. Bad luck. This is the first time I ever had use my skinny spare wheel. Would not trust the liquid chewing gum as it 1 might not work and 2 would have ruined the inner parts of my rim...
I have my spare and my helix sub. I just set my helix on top of the spare. And I run the floor on the top notches. Programmed it sounds so freaking awesome. I added this system in a 2017 GTI sport.
@@davidheether1655 where did you get the longer hold down screw?
Hi mate, awesome video! What is the dimensions of the packaging?
about 4" bigger than the subwoofer. naw im just jokin, i have no idea, sry
Is it just me or does it only have 1 SD slot? Shouldn't there be 2 slots?
Good video
mines has 2 slots
I watched your video & it’s very very good. I also apologise because I bumped the thumbs down button when I meant to push the thumbs up button 😳 I have sorted that now.
Very good video 🤙🏻
thanks brother
I have the Helix in my Passat. Probably a stupid question, but if I unplug the amp to take the sub out (I need to lower the floor) will it kill the audio completely?
i think the inside speakers are still connected. should work.
Hey everyone! Great video and I have a question, I just purchased the 2022 Volkswagon Tiguan and heard that these also work on them? Can anyone confirm?
wish i knew
Nice install, like ever. Want to buy me the same helix sub...but what was the packet size and weight please? Thanks to you for your always helpfull howto's.
35 lbs.
and as a guess, 24" x 24" x 9"
Sir, thank you very much for your install video. Was the hold down pin you've used part of the kit or was it purchased separately? If so, where could I purchase them?
you mean the wire pin release tools? Can't remember where i bought them.
@@LastHumansGarage Not quite, I was referring to the black plastic piece to hold the red/brown wires you mention at the 7:35 minute mark. Thank you very much for the reply.
great video! question - the S trim doesn't have the CD/SD head unit(at least in the '21 mk7.5). any idea about doing this install with the CD/SD player missing? curious how much extra trim needs to be removed.
no idea, never had an S. i heard the non-cd player one is even harder cuz u have to open up the center area?
@@LastHumansGarage thanks, from what i've gathered i think all of the connections run straight to the back of the infotainment screen. expecting to run short on slack.
How does this compare to dynaudio??? Is it much of a difference or better than premium vw sound?
I wouldn't know. I only had Dynaudio on my MK6's.. But my guess would be the Dynaudio is better just because of the better tuning, the Helix may have more bass, but the extra power to the doors messes them up.
I have a question .. i believe one of the additional (harnesses) is for the right hand drive vehicles . Is that the case .. bevmcause i see you have installed both together.. im asking because I drive a right hand drive and that would make sense to me .
no idea man
@@LastHumansGarage never mind it was that jumper plug which os for ledt and right hand drive
@@glenngaucigrech oh ya i remember that plug.. i didn't need it on mine obviously.
@@LastHumansGarage i made a longer rj45 cable (plus a coupler for the dummy plug) so i can program on the go .. (bought a dongle)
Will the Helix Harness work with both VW MK7 GTI Stock head units ? And will it be the same harness configuration ? I have the stock Discovery radio . Thank you for your help
i dont know, sry
Just bought a 2019 Tiguan R-Line and it’s the base model sound system; no sub. Would this fit in the spare tire compartment as well?
Don't know if its compatible with a Tiguan.
What kind of dongle do you use? Would i be able to program this with an obd11?
its a special dongle dealers have that pretty hard to find. but you can prob buy it
@@LastHumansGarage Thank you for your reply, I actually found it for around $150 in my country. Will probably check first what my dealer want for doing the setup for me :)
I can’t find this kit anywhere can you please send me a link!!
Prob extinct at this point..
I need the connection radio cable
Where did you get the steering wheel cover?
what steering wheel cover are you referring to?
@@LastHumansGarage I have a 2017….did not realize 2018 was different. No perforations in the 17.
I have the Battery there in my polo gti 2020
I don't think this will fit over it
damn!
Why my Radio Not Works ? I Have no picture on mit Screen and the Radio is always off? Please i Need help?
no clue man. did you install a helix?
Is there a link to this ?
hmmm... this was 5 years ago.
If you remove the feet you can keep your spare tire in.
nice!
You don't need to plug into the back of the radio?
you do. the glove area is the radio harness in this case
Can I connect an amplifier (Rockford Fosgate R2-300X4) or an subwoofer from the Glovebox?
Got a link to buy?
naw not anymore. they're hard to find
is it the same sub that comes with the SE experience package (Fender Audio)
no.
Nice setup wish we could have heard it!
Sorry about that
@@LastHumansGarage no problem. I like that you save on trunk space just don't get a flat! 😆
@@darrellroireau4061 you can pull it out easily
What dsg paddles are those?
oh those were s2tpp paddles. www.s2tpp.com/VW.html
Do you known how I can find somebody to program my sub for me. I just installed the helix sub in my 2019 gti
you need to find someone renting a dongle on the forums, or go to a dealer. or just buy a dongle yourself.
Does the AMP come as a part of the Helix "kit"?
Yes of course. It’s a 35x4 rms @ 4 ohm or 50x4 rms @ 2 ohm plus 160w rms x 1 for the sub. But it’s too loud. More than enough clean power. It has a bad gain ratio on our base system, and no one can listen over 50% volume without hurting their ears.
I have a brand new polo is it possible to install subwoofer to it
anything is possible mate. with the right design and price.
Can I use this with the spare tire still in place?
you need a longer spare tire hold down then.. and you have to run your trunk floor in the upper position.
The new version of this sub comes with a pole that mounts on the spare, the product is named the same as the old one but it ends with a B
@@-vickyspit- Do you know the part number for this post?
cheer's nice very good detailing.
thanks bro
@@LastHumansGarage did you remove your battery terminal before installation?
@@georgieporgie7523 of course.
Wouldn't his be the same on a mk6 gti?
dont know, prob different.
How long it takes to ship?
a while.
Is there a step by step instruction that I can read out? This will be a nightmare to follow during the install
Yup. A nightmare for anyone doing it. If you aren’t comfortable w it if pay someone.
I have demo switch and the coding dongle.
nice one mate!
Genius , sacrifices spare tire for some extra bass :D
Ate a bowl of dramamine while watching but thanks for sharing
LULZ@!@@ that is hilarious bro!! I prob had some wonky camera settings in this one..
Awesome ;)
Thanks
