It writes the histories of 'modern' mortals, yet is so easily overlooked as just background against magic and more flashy metals. It represents conviction. It represents protection and death. Its worth is made in the hands of those who use it, not by rarity.

I really like how the steel dragons actually want their hoards to have meaning - not just for themselves, but as a legacy for the world as a whole. I feel as though these dragons embody the spirit of DnD itself. As they create great art, we create great memories, good and bad. They spread their art so it can mean something. @@SharowbladyeGaymerPorate There are a few concepts that you could play on for that. Perhaps the true friend is a homunculus or a human soul that had been transferred into a construct. Even further, baring that possibility in mind, this True Friend could be their first lover.
Came in prepared for some sort of incredibly badass metal creature. Wasn't prepared for the onslaught of heartwarming feels about transcendental friendship and the profoundly touching value of life and all the great experiences, lessons and achievements we should be aiming to make out of it like steel dragons do.
Imagine the final years of the soulbind (elf or dwarf or such). They've had this friend who's been a constant, even though they keep changing their personalities completely around every century or so. But then after hundreds of years together, they tell you that their time has come...and then go into a reflection for hundreds of years, while their soulbind just comes every so often to check on them, one day to find the reflection over and their friend has finally passed away. And now the responsibility of their lifesworks is still to come.
Okay now we need an NPC that is a Half-dragon with his mother being a Steel Dragon that had feel in love and married unknowingly with a Silver Dragon trying to play a part think it would be an interesting character
For some reason the stuff about the steel dragon's composition really got to me. The idea that these dragons, instead of stealing and hoarding to fill their lair, creates things to decorate its home and then spreads it to society at large when it dies is amazing. Added to that the idea that only one person will ever recognize the accomplishments of a specific steel dragon in its entire lifetime and even its own children won't remember it until they are about to die. This is kind of a beautifully tragic creature.
I think I have a new favorite dragon, they're SO complex (a true masterpiece of a character). Although, what would happen if a steel dragon decided to not clean their memory? or wrote to their future self something and how all those past lifes are one? What if their soul bound was to get killed? Could a soulbound be their couple every single lifetime? And imagine how hard it must be for a long lived humanoid to find out that their old friend was a steel dragon, to go through hell itself to find them and that they don't remember them? (Add more drama by being their spouse/descendant) Could their soulbound guide them to stick to a certain morality? What if they ended being in opposite sides of the law or a war?
It is all explained in a video. Dragon will not forget his soulbond. Dragon chooses his soulbond with two major factors in mind: longevity and ability not to judge, aka true neutral. Dragon choses a friend, so not a love interest for soulbound, because this person will have to outlive and say goodbye to said dragon. Steel dragon knows himself in between those lives, it does not loose awareness of being steel dragon after vaulting, otherwise it would have to learn vaulting again after each vaulting. It does leave notes to itself in form of masterpieces it creates after each life and it carries them all to its lair, so it does not forget its lair, its dragon abilities or awareness of one self. What would be better question is what kind of masterpiece they create after living a life of a peasant or pirate, how about lawyer?
@@Cheshiremd But do all steel dragons in the end have to vault? (is it the decision or the pain of the lost ones that make them vault?) If during the twilight years of a steel dragon it remembers everything, then imagine the emotional storm it may be suffering during their sleep
@@Randomdudefromtheinternet, it is a decision, but the one they have to make in order to lead a new life. Imagine if steel was a pirate and next life he started as an admiral. If steel didn't vault memories of his pirate's life than his judgement and morals as an admiral will be compromised. He might pardon his friends from past life or be very lenient to pirates in general and hard on his officers. Such inconsistencies will prevent his full immersion in the life he chose and, maybe even will prevent him from making a masterwork. What then? Hard to tell, but consequences might be disastrous. So this is why steel HAS to vault.
I think it would be cool for a steel dragon to soul bond with a human and because the human cares so much for the dragon he becomes a lich in order to be able to live long enough to help the steel dragon achieve its goal. It could be a possible twist reveal to a party that kills a lich.
This dragon is literally one of the Imperium of Man's nightmares made real. A nonhuman intelligent being that hides amongst humans and crossbreeds with them. That is funny.
Well, more like a nonhuman intelligent being wants to be human so much that they discard their own species to be human, but yes, the Steel Dragons would give the Imperium so many heart attacks...

Nice video! There is actually one steel dragon in 5e that shows up in Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage, but it doesn't have all the cool abilities discussed here.
I am so happy to see you doing the Steel Dragons, my favorite for years now. I've even had a recurring NPC Steel for many campaigns. Argh, so awesome. You even including the lesser known things, too. But I will say there are several things missing from the info. For example, their polymorphed forms always have some sort of Steel-colored aspect to it, be it hair, nails, or even a trinket. Its just something they do, and allows only other Steels to tell what they truly are. They also leave into the wilds far away once a month to go a feeding frenzy, as while they prefer to eat while human, it can't sustain itself that way. The reasons it gives for leaving depends on it's current life. And two last things; there are notes of several Steels actually having several lives at a time, notably one of the ones you mentioned living in Waterdeep. Lastly, they have a 'unbound curiosity', which is it typically leads it into its life choices. These are just extra tidbits, as the lore you stated goes way beyond those little things. Good God I loved the video, made me love them even more.
Now I want to DM a campaign where my players are confronted to a master criminal and his elf acolyte. When they finally dismount his organization and defeat him, they witness a flying shape leaving whatever was their final encounter area, understanding that the threat might still be real and that they might have to confront a dragon. When they arrive to his lair after some quests, they meet his elf minion, his soulbond, who explains them that his friend was living a crimininal life to expand his composition, and that he is now vaulting and will forever forget that life and might begin a new one, perfectly virtuous. Now the players must choose : will they defeat the elf and kill the dragon during his vault, or will they let him finish his composition ?
seems like the steel dragon was made for the PC's. can't think of a background for your character? boom! you're a steel dragon! nothing else needed. though if not used in a lazy way you could have stories from your past vault that creates obstacles, treasure cashes, and have created opportunities like chipped away at a wall that helps cut a way to a dungeon boss.
An interesting idea would be a Steel Dragon with a faulty, "leaking" Vaulting Process. Old memories resurfacing at random, in dreams or as nightmares. Or, if you roll really bad, the Steel Dragon completely blanks out and just stands there as it re-lives past events unless a companion snaps it out, or it breaks out of it itself. Steel Dragons are really interesting creatures, depending on how it is handled.
I would love this so much, except that it's probably very difficult to pull off playing what essentially amounts to the Avatar. But if I was a more skilled player and had an experienced DM, this would be fucking awesome. Another great concept would be that you are a Steel Dragon's soulbond and either need to help them transition into a new life or (my favorite one) need to help them spread their knowledge into the world. Now that's an emotional hook if I've ever seen one.
the soul bound friend would trust his descendants and their friends to spread the knowledge of the steel dragon across the four corners of the world. but they need to be careful that they don't fall into the hands of a knowledge-destroying inquisition. each recipient of knowledge would have long lasting effects on the next campaign, some would be catch 22's, some would be crucial for the birth of the next campaign, and others would simply drastically change the landscape of the future game. have the players debate, fight, and go behind the backs of the other players to whom they deem worthy of the riddle of steel.
Wow, knew a little about Steels before but all this....the dramatic, poetic, tragic potential for storytelling with these guys is immense! In the time it took to watch this video I have developed the plan for an entire bloody campaign in my head, off to the notebooks methinks!
The Steel Dragons are my new favorite! When I started this video I had no idea what I was about discover. These videos are awesome, keep up the excellent work.
I think you're mixing up Ao and Io. Ao is the god of gods in Forgotten Realms, who created the universe and all that. Io was the ancient dragon god who later split into Tiamat and Bahamut
Here a year later to say: while this might be the mistake, I'm pretty sure Io is sometimes credited with creating the multiverse, so in some sense "god of gods" might still be appropriate
Steel dragons are now my official favourite! So much that i wanna become one in real life just for the drama! I love it and thank you for sharing MrRhexx!
What if a Steel Dragon soul bonded with a family instead of an individual? (I’m trying to see the plausibility of Speedwagon as a steel dragon. Roll with it)

Steels are, without question, my favorite dragon subtype. Between their servitude to IO and the crazy mental abilities, they're so crazy to make use of and a ton of fun to think about. I love these crazy buggers.
Great idea for a high level PC steel dragon pretending to be an adventurer. See how long you and the DM can keep the secret whilst dropping subtle hints. Gonna have to try this some day
Currently playing as a half elf sorcerer, but am actually a silver dragon wyrmling (with sorcerer levels). Was going pretty well until we settled for camp one night, and the dark powers that rule Ravenloft thought itd be funny to trigger the lycanthropy half the party got infected with about a week early while we were on our way to go find a macguffin to trade in return for getting the curse removed. Unfortunately, the ones infected were the Fighter, Cleric, and Monk, leaving Me (the sorcerer), Wizard and Bard in a tough spot and I had to shift so I could fly up with the gnome wizard on my back. The bard got his ass beat but somehow beat the DC and didnt get infected.
AHAH! I knew it, the OverGod Aio IS Asgorath, leader of the Draconic pantheon, as well as the god of all gods. Now I’m going to spin the current lore of Asgorath dying from getting sliced in half and those two halves becoming Bahamut and Tiamat(this is the lord of their creation), and make it so that Asgorath was just a lesser piece of Aio. Which being the god of gods he could totally do. Gonna do this in my setting for my campaigns. The reason why watching him say this made me come to this conclusion is because it’s been a long standing argument from old lore and new lore(1st and 2nd ed vs 3rd 4th and 5th).
You should check out AJ picket’s video on the steel dragons, they seem better sourced and there’s some specific stories told about notable steel dragons.
WOW, this one was.. outstanding! I knew Steels before, but with not half the information provided here. I knew about soulbound, I knew about living of the lives, but didnt know about a voulture. This made the whole chain of lives even more sad, if they are to be forgotten by its own dragon children, and forgots them also. For now I have couple ideas to work with, how to incorporate Steel to my future (and previous) campaigns... For example players will met in each campaing a different npc, who will incorporate their (or memories about all my players) stories into his work. They will didn't know this, until someone, once day, will give them a magic scrying orb. Orb that looks for first impression as broken, because shows only emotions, no images etc. But if one of the players touches it the vision became clear, and recognizable only by this player. A glimpse of memory from story of his one previous character... And the note with information, that out there are more of these kind of items. And the pursuit for the memories will start. Maybe if players will successfully collect some part of the collection it will lead them to dreaming dragon in a very moment before IO will "Judge " him. This could be very good legacy of my players, especially because I have copies of all theirs characters ever played in my DM history. Thanks for the video!
Song Dragons too are a lot like steel and silver dragons. For instance, though they can have children with humanoids. These children, while looking like their humanoid parent, are actually half-dragons (and most cases don't know it). Neighbor was the soul-bff. Walking away from his son was so hard, the experience will allow dad to ascend. I'mma make a grown man weep
Cheshire but we don't care about goblins right now, we wanna know what they don't tell us about kobolds. I have a stake in this since two of my characters were turned into kobolds!! They need to assimilate into their new lives as adventurer fodder. (Ok this is a joke of course. My kobold sorceress managed to aid in the end game fight with an army of united kobolds and post game founded an enclave for the new City Kobolds. While my kobold rogue is currently ok with his new form and is just living his life as he would as his old Half-Elf form helping out his elven mother now and then.)
I'm very glad this video happened. I wouldn't have known about steel dragons otherwise and they are one of my favourites, one of the central characters for the campaign I'm planning being a steel dragon.
There is, in fact, a steel dragon in 5th edition...sort of. In the Dungeon of the Mad Mage module there is an encounter with a steel dragon that polymorphed into a dueregar and leads an army of dueregar. Granted when it comes to stats it was just a reskinned silver dragon with poison instead of cold breath
Phiro 00 my bad, the module actually gave it an acid breath, I changed it to poison in my own campaign because I thought it was more thematic and there aren’t any metallics that have poison breaths yet. From what I could find though steel dragons were said to be able to breathe acid and poison gas, so I don’t know exactly if Wizards made it acid on a whim or not
These are some of the most amazing/interesting creatures I've learned about since I started watching your channel a few months back. They are living in quantum leap for whole lifetimes at a time
I wanna play as a PC that is secretly a steel dragon. Like, the part enters my Composition and I either am forced to drop the disguise or try and keep it up and persuade my party to not take anything. Also the Control Emotion Aura can be useful in potentially overwriting bad effects. Just send the DM a secret message like “I use my Control Emotion Aura to inspire the party” and they have me roll Sleight of Hand or what not to see if the party notices. Can be awesome!
A steal dragon's layer would be the perfect place for my diviner to hide his backup spellbook, as long as the dragon is okay with the diviner stoping in to update or coppy form the book. How do steel half dragons exist if steel dragons are really careful about their dragon identity? My guess is that they're the result of when a steel dragon soulbonds with someone of the opposite sex, and friends become mates (and then they mate). Sounds a bit like the Seeker patron. I really like that idea!
...My god this is beautiful and sad. I can understand why they picked steel for this element. It's reflective, yet inexpensive. It's functional, but also decorative. It writes the histories of 'modern' mortals, yet is so easily overlooked as just background against magic and more flashy metals. It represents conviction. It represents protection and death. Its worth is made in the hands of those who use it, not by rarity.
Very well said! I didn’t think anyone could see the true beauty of this dragon type. I wonder how often steel dragons have killed their own descendants, maybe even children in their next lives.
I feel as though these dragons embody the spirit of DnD itself. As they create great art, we create great memories, good and bad. They spread their art so it can mean something. We do the same with our fun and exciting stories we make. And they're all overseen by Ao, who in turn serves the Luminous Ones, which would be the DMs themselves. Feels kind of amazing to think about.
Okay, so who's down to go Four levels deep, and play as Steel Dragons (in D&D) playing as humans, that get together and play their in universe version of Dungeons and Dragons every week.

The thing that made me fall in love with this dragon race is it’s vaulting ritual. The fact that it vaults it’s family life as a dragon is just so bitter sweet cuz the idea of having to hide away your memories before moving to a new life a few years later is intense
And that quote from a steel dragon "... It's better this way" it sounds almost reluctant and resigned. Like it doesn't want to go through with it but it know it must...
Kinda like an avatar from Avatar the last airbender. They reincarnate regularly and barely remember anything in their past life other than their friends and family.

(Add more drama by being their spouse/descendant)
Could their soulbound guide them to stick to a certain morality? What if they ended being in opposite sides of the law or a war?
Miguel Angel Rangel sounds like a Dungeons and Dragons Doctor Who plot.
@@AmaryInkawult Imagine that a steel dragon has descendants, and after vaulting, it marries them
@@Cheshiremd But do all steel dragons in the end have to vault? (is it the decision or the pain of the lost ones that make them vault?)
If during the twilight years of a steel dragon it remembers everything, then imagine the emotional storm it may be suffering during their sleep

But, the children are still human. At least physically.

Fascinating! D&D dragonkind is one of the most interesting pieces of lore in existence of roleplaying.
seems like the steel dragon was made for the PC's. can't think of a background for your character? boom! you're a steel dragon! nothing else needed. though if not used in a lazy way you could have stories from your past vault that creates obstacles, treasure cashes, and have created opportunities like chipped away at a wall that helps cut a way to a dungeon boss.
Steel Dragons are really interesting creatures, depending on how it is handled.
like all elements in story telling, the concept matters little if the execution is done poorly.

These videos are amazing man well done !! GIMME MORE DRAGONS

The steel dragon sounds like it could be a very cool character race for a high level build.
This is perhaps the most beautiful expression of life I have ever heard of; just wonderful.
So it's basically a Dragon Time Lord.
Whoa... Pretty much. Except Timelords remember most of what they do in their lifetimes. But holy shit.
The eternal dragon of time! AQW reference sorry.
the campaign i am running has changed drastically with ideas i got while watching this, thank you.
There is, in fact, a steel dragon in 5th edition...sort of. In the Dungeon of the Mad Mage module there is an encounter with a steel dragon that polymorphed into a dueregar and leads an army of dueregar. Granted when it comes to stats it was just a reskinned silver dragon with poison instead of cold breath
is poison their natural breath weapon or did they pull that out their ass?
Phiro 00 my bad, the module actually gave it an acid breath, I changed it to poison in my own campaign because I thought it was more thematic and there aren’t any metallics that have poison breaths yet. From what I could find though steel dragons were said to be able to breathe acid and poison gas, so I don’t know exactly if Wizards made it acid on a whim or not
These are some of the most amazing/interesting creatures I've learned about since I started watching your channel a few months back. They are living in quantum leap for whole lifetimes at a time
Platinum (Bahamut) Dragons next please ^^
or
Void/Shadow Dragons
I wanna play as a PC that is secretly a steel dragon. Like, the part enters my Composition and I either am forced to drop the disguise or try and keep it up and persuade my party to not take anything. Also the Control Emotion Aura can be useful in potentially overwriting bad effects. Just send the DM a secret message like “I use my Control Emotion Aura to inspire the party” and they have me roll Sleight of Hand or what not to see if the party notices. Can be awesome!
LMAO! Was searching for your videos of sphinxes and found out that you made a new vid. Great Work!
I'm currently in the works on a homebrew steel Dragonborn race, and this has helped me a ton.
Could you make a vid on Orange dragons? Honestly they sound like they could be the most dangerous out of most of the dragons
So I would like to say as a Dungeon master who just finished a campaign and is now working on a new one, this info is VERY useful.
A steal dragon's layer would be the perfect place for my diviner to hide his backup spellbook, as long as the dragon is okay with the diviner stoping in to update or coppy form the book.
Edit: My diviner, like Steal Dragons, is all about the preservation and speading of knowledge. So he would be honered to have his spellbook distributed as part of the steal dragon's hoard.
This is my all time favorite dragon and my all time favorite video on said dragon. At least 2 times a year I come back to this video and give it a rewatch. Thank you so much for this expose'
How do steel half dragons exist if steel dragons are really careful about their dragon identity?
My guess is that they're the result of when a steel dragon soulbonds with someone of the opposite sex, and friends become mates (and then they mate). A steel half-dragon may be the incarnation of the ultimate love, a love that transcends lifetimes.
There are more dragons then Steel-Dragons you know
If I heard the video correctly, they _can_ give birth to fully human offspring... if they chose. Aka they could choose to have a half dragon offspring.
At 3:08 there's a voice change where he says "which is usually the coolest stuff..." It sounds great! Gave me a good grin.
