Small Lightweight Outboard Rigging and Setup for use on a Kayak

- Today you will get a more in-depth view of these simplistic small lightweight outboards that
will mount to virtually all kayaks with a transom, side mount, or custom rear mount. The video
goes over a few key points on my build and allows you to get an idea of what goes into these
systems. For the serious kayak fishermen and DIY guys as well, these fit the ticket for both
professional and leisure usage. These engines are fully air-cooled and can run in almost all
climate types. No impeller pickup, just simple technology with few failure points, unlike electric.
Today I ran at a max speed of 6.0 mph into the in-coming current on flat water. The common
speed range is 5.3-6.7 mph depending on craft, weight, and currents. I have achieved 5.3 mph
in my Frontier 12 and 6.7 mph with a following current at about 4 knots in my Pursuit.
These units stow easily, require minimal maintenance, weigh 23lbs, and are 100% customizable. - Спорт
Great video, I'm impressed how quiet they are, I don't mind the noise, better than a big city noise, thanks
Excellent setup.
That's an amazing setup. I don't even think the Suzuki 2.5 gets 6.7 mph. But I know it depends on the kayak. I have my Oldtown Sportsman powered by Minnkota. And I run the new J2 Bixpy PP 768. I run one or the other. For large lakes, covering water, and tournaments. We're all going motorized. Awesome job bro.. 🌊🎣
video starts at 12:10 thank you.
shit that long thanks!
Niceee... greetings from Singapore. Just bought a Chinese 144F outboard engine. A 4 stroke 4HP. I'm using it with a 15 ft square stern canoe. Love what u are doing. Awesome work there !! Keep the vidz going buddy !!
I appreciate the feedback.
Nice
I'd like to see you put a gp460 engine on that thing. The engine can rev to 18k rpms no problem. You probably do 25 mph lol.
Nice setup, where did you buy it? Thanks,Barry
I'm curious what brand your gallon gas can? with air valve on top? Thanks
My new setup is a 2 gallon marine tank and there is no valve on top. It is a 2 way barb. The Honda tanks are not pressurized.
Can you show me how you put the fuel lines on the gas caps? I can't seem to figure it out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
The gas cap has a two sided barb fitting with a nut and washers that go on both sides. You need to drill through the cap with a smaller bit than fitting and snug up. Keep it centered when you drill the cap.
Well I’m sold ordering this. I have a kayak and also an intex mariner 4 with motor mount. Can I use this on the mariner also ?
I don’t see why not. It is more powerful than people realize. I have people attaching these systems to inflatables quite often.
Could you please put a link to the motor?
Is there a way to set up the throttle next to you and have the pedals do the steering? The throttle uses a corded system but I want to mount it near me
Yes. You can turn and reposition the tiller and by adding 2 eye bolts you can then tie into the pedal system on the deck. The throttle needs to have an extended throttle cable and lever system.
Very cool setup, can post the link of the outboard? Definitely cheaper than the pedal option
You can check the website www.kayakbuddys.com.
Hey mate very slick setup. I did a similar mount at the back. But I'm struggling to find a tiller extension like yours. What's the brand and where did you get it from. Following your work in Australia
Dude you are full of sh*t! . That motor does not do that!! Full of s*** I wonder how much the company paid you if they'd pay me I would love for them to pay me and give me one of them but motors LOL!!! That guy is so way down bro there's no way in hell it's going that fast no I don't believe it!! You sound like a big guy too. Come on you're such a liar dude you got like a 15 horsepower motor on the back I guarantee it I know it I just know it at least they're 15 horsepower!!!! I noticed you don't point the camera backwards quite a bit you show it at the end but that is not the motor that is pushing that kayak no way no way that's pushing that kayak that fast and at the end of the video at minute actually after you say the home Depot special or whatever you say you're such a liar dude
I had a 35 lb thrust on the back of my kayak 12 ft that went just as fast.
Would you recommend a custom or side mount transom for a Ocean Kayak XL?
I would place outboard behind you with a tiller extension for the best performance and control.
You should try a 25HP motor bro :D
What system do you recommend for a. vibe Tandem 130T
The 50cc Honda with an upgraded leg would push the vibe very well. Grab a mount from yak gadget and everything will bolt on.
Looking to put a motor on ascend 128x. Do you think 6hp is too much? Maybe 50 lbs of motor
You will destroy your kayak and sink. That is just silly. The max on any kayak should be right around 2 hp.
@@kayakbuddysllc-lightweight4947 I ended up getting a honda 2.3. It’s 30lbs. It works great and is very lightweight but I honestly wish I went with a 4 or 5 hp motor. The 2.3 is a little slow. Not fast enough to outrun the wake surfers
@@prestonprince3406 get a boat if you need to go that fast. 😂
What's the best motor for speed in your opinion?
There’s no way to really answer the question. You want an engine that’s going to be reliable and easy maintenance and therefore I would go with a Honda50cc engine which is about a 2.0 hp. Once you start adding more horsepower he becomes dangerous.
@@kayakbuddysllc-lightweight4947 thanks
I'm hooking on the 4hp motor, gonna be interesting.
Just be careful. To much power will flex and crack the transom due to the torque. You can only go so fast based on the hull design.
Lov what ur ide bro...
Where do I find these motors ?
You can look on my website for more information. www.kayakbuddys.com.
How can i reach you? I need help with my 2020 Moken 12.5 V2. I currently have a 55lb thrust minn kota trolling motor on it, and i steer it with foot track pedals (which i hate!). This set up was VERY expensive, and im not happy with it at all. I'd love to speak with you about my options...please! I've never used UA-cam to conntact anyone, so i have no idea HOW to contact you.
My website is www.kayakbuddys.com and my phone number is 305 926-2937. I am a legit business, not a hobbyist with kayak propulsion.
What do you charge for that motor setup? Curious
All of the pricing is on the website. www.kayakbuddys.com.
Hi this engine can steer left and right?
Yes of course. It has a turn radius of about 320 degrees with the tiller extension.
@@kayakbuddysllc-lightweight4947 ok..thank you so much
Parts???
Sorry would of liked if you showed how you setup the motor and with what parts with a parts list
What are asking? Parts are available.
This is his business..he sells them.. Not for you to build one!
Megusta ese deporte
I do not speak Spanish. Thank you.
Very nice but very loud, attach a 50cc moped muffler to the factory muffler
The full length systems are not as loud as you hear. The camera at the time was not great at picking up the decibels accurately. This is a 4 stroke not 2 stroke. Look at some of the recent videos and you will see the difference in sound quality.
Where you running half throttle?
It is hard to say. What is your concern or question about the system?
@@kayakbuddysllc-lightweight4947 i was just wondering how fast you can go at full throttle. i’m thinking about mounting one of these on a bass raider.
@@MrJustus88 the speed on most craft range from 4.5-6.7mph. I usually get my Pursuit to 6.3 all day long and my large Frontier 12 to 5.3 mph. This is about 90% throttle. Cruise speed is 4.5 mph on my kayaks.
Is that a 4 stroke or a 2 stroke ?
4-stroke. We only run Honda powerheads.
HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER IS IT???
The 50cc is 2.1 hp.
You up to selling this one?
Eric go to the website. I sell all of these versions. Www.kayakbuddys.com

Regards.
That thing is so loud lol.
So I guess you have never been next to an outboard. No different than any other small outboard in the decibel level. Stick with your electric.
@@kayakbuddysllc-lightweight4947 lol, chillx bud...I own a 2.5 HP Suzuki outboard and also a Yamaha... They're not as loud... But yeah, you get what you pay for...
@@onlygod5667I deal with you guys all the time. Laughable at best dropping a traditional motor on a plastic boat and cracking the transom is the outcome. Off the shelf does not perform better than these on a kayak. You are right you get what you pay for. No offense given nor taken. Have a blessed day.
@@kayakbuddysllc-lightweight4947 lol
Yea I'll probably build one of these some day, but I'll use an xbox controller to manoeuvre it.
