- In this video, Skratch Bastid explains DVS, or "Digital Vinyl Systems". DVS came on the DJ scene in the early 2000s and changed the game entirely. How exactly did it do this, and how does it work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using it? How do the different DVS brands differ?

only video on the entire internet explaining this , thanks man
Bro for real. This whole time I though it was a best kept secret.
@@yusefandrews6620 hahaha
Agree sir......I thought y no one is changing records
I was having an issue finding good search results as well.
Nice to see a veteran DJ not hate on DVS
Shemar Williams I know. so many of them act like we r lazy or taking the easy way out. who wants to carry a dozen crates full of records?
+Nino Brown I do!
+Jonathan V. Believe me man, you can't explain that to 'softwear djs' It's part of the entire experience for oldschool djs and even newer ones before a gig to spend time flipping thru your crates of vinyl, putting together mixes and other vinyl to take to the gig. It gets you pumped up for the party!! We flip thru crates, not files!! It gets you more pumped than just reading the text of a file/track name, boring. I just agree to disagree with them, we're all different but you'll have those ppl that are 'always right' and there way is always 'better than everyone elses'. I don't call them lazy unless they're just standing there pushing a play button, standing there bouncing up and down like idiots with their hands above their heads in the shape of a heart! Lol! Wtf?
Jazzy Jeff & Scratch Bastid still 2 of my favorite turntablists . Revolution Babu & Green Lantern too.
you are on the money bro and you are right ( old school ) is in the soul I am a d.j out of new york city 1977- present ) over 120 crates of vinyl. pushing a button is so lazy man
I haven't DJ'ed in about 18 years and recently started to gain interest again. So I started watching some Wu-Tang scratch sessions on YT. I had NO IDEA this technology existed and was getting ready to go to war in the comments saying the video I was watching was fake and blah blah. I'm glad my old ass researched a bit before hand. The DJ maneuvers I was watching were all there and accurate which was confusing the shit outta me because the song kept changing without the needle switching positions on the vinyl and the dj would just randomly pick the needle up and drop it with a flick of the wrist. I was like... NOPE FAKE. I landed on this video and I'm glad I did. This technology is absolutely amazing and I wish I had it back when I was in my prime. The mixing and scratching skill is still fully there. It's just made more accessible and quicker to access. Incredible technology and I'm going to dive deeper into. Thank you for the video and clarification!
Man same here until I watched him and Jazzy Jeff I was like what are the using like they were using records but I see serato and the platter going crazy on the computer screen but whatever Jeff is using the tonearm is not on the record
I was standing next to ritchie hawtin in the booth while he was using his beta version of final scratch (now serato i think?) at axis in Boston in 99/2000. Its real. Ritchie invented it (naturally). I looked on and pretty much figured what was going on with the analog digital conversion of the timecode at the time, because other USB midi controllers were birthing at the time, but anybody else and i might have thought it would be a fad, but since it was the Plastikman, I knew i was watching history. Now you know something about the history of Techno on this continent. THanks for reading.
... i was only curious to see why dj's had both a computer and discs spinnin but ive now been introduced to scratch bastid. this dude is dope!
I'm a vinyl guy so not going to be investing in this equipment, but nice to finally get a clear breakdown on how it actually works.
i remember when DVS came out, my friend who was a DJ at the time back in university bought the first ever serato DVS system and we were messing around with it. it was sooo fun. living in a country where good vinyl records were very hard to come by, this allowed us to really be able to experience vinyl DJing but in an accessible way!
he never stuck with it though and sold it after a while coz it didn't really work for him being a mobile DJ having turntables was more of a hassle than it was worth and back in early 2000s vinyl and turntables didn't have the same appeal they do now.
i never really DJed at the time but much later (5 or 6 years ago) i got into DJing but i took the controller side of things, DJing mainly techno and some house, i went the traktor route, built my own controllers and controller mappings to do exactly what i wanted and it was fun for a bit but i got kindof tired of it, there was no pleasure from it personally.
Now i'm starting to feel the desire to DJ again but this time i've already aquired a small collection of vinyl and my love of vinyl has grown a lot and i decided to get back into DJing but with real vinyl. i'm probably not going to be playing any shows or anything it's merely a desire to have fun with music. i might end up switching to DVS if i start feeling the need to perform or make more sets often but i think for now i'll stick to the techno vinyl collection i'm slowly building up.
bought a very cheap setup that most people would judge me horrible on and gonna start learning how to properly mix vinyl and beatmatch and all that.
gone are the days of having 4 different tracks running at the same time being looped and key matched and tempo synced :D
Thanks dude, awesome explanation! I've stopped djing for 15 years and have since lost touch with the technological advancements. Very nice of you to take the time to share this info. Big thumbs up!
Glad I found this video, I was legit so confused when I started to notice more closely guys mixing on Vinyl but never changing the actual records lol. Thanks!
Was gobsmacked when found out that turntables were still in effect technology as well moved forward.would love a dvs set up.
Congratulations. After looking at more that 10 videos, I have finally found someone who really understands it and explains it properly. Best regards from Barcelona.
These videos are dope. Heck yeah, DVS totally keeps turntables alive. Peace from Oakland, California.
Thank you for explaining this. I'm excited to try this and learn something new!
Thank you for this. A decade ago, I use to scratch with traditional turntables, just for fun, and eventually took time away from it. I've been wanting to get back into it, but with a more modern setup, and I was wondering if there was a digital way to do so, while keeping a traditional setup (as opposed to CD's).
So this video taught me a lot! Thanks a lot! Sounds like DVS is going to be the perfect route I want to take.
Well made video with good concise explanations, without being boring. Thanks again!
Keto Wuskiburr numark ns7
you the man bruh! I am a newbie in the DJ field.. and I am opting to use DVS but dont really know how it works and... but after watching your video... man I am surely going for TURNTABLES and DVS! good job bro!
This is offing informative - I saw this system on a live session once and wondered why the hell he never changed records - and then you taught me DVS!
This is so cool, I’m just getting in to DJing, I have a few good turntables and didn’t want to reinvest in CDjs to learn. This is a great solution for me I’m super excited to try this out.
Love all of your videos. I'm a really big fan and I wish to one day be at the same level of Scratching you are at. Your videos are awesome and keep doing what you do.
Hoping these series is gonna keep uploading, Scratch Bastid is not only a world leading DJ, but also a consummate teacher.
Much love from Cornwall, UK. 🤍
Never thought I'd find a video on how this works and how to do it, I thought this was just a myth or a legend! I have to try this!
This was so well explained. You are the man! The first time I saw your video doing The Imperial March 🤯 Keep the needle to the groove.
So refreshing to see a genuine positive attitude from a pro.
Thank you so much this puzzled me for years. This helps me so much.
This was really useful and answered a lot of my questions. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I had NO idea! Informative video!
omg I was totally in a bushes about how DVS does works... cheers !!! x
Thank you Skratch, this is super dope and exactly what I was looking for! Willie Four Milli, Kelowna BC
The amount of respect I have for this man is paramount
That was so phenomenally clear
Now I understand why in competitions , dj's don't change their physical records like they used to do in the 90's when playing multiple tracks.
I used to be a vinyl dj and am thinking of getting back into the mix by purchasing dj controllers connected to a laptop, to update my knowledge. So from my understanding what I took from this video is I can retain my SL 1200's and mixer and just buy Serato software and DVS which is the analouge to digital music converter, correct?
Realatable story here. Bought a pair of cdj's 9 years ago after moving far far north, where regularly purchasing records would have been problematic. Got tired of burning cd's and evaluated upgrading the players last year, retrieved my 1200's and got myself a TTM57 and ScratchLive instead. Smartest choice i ever done. The thing is absolute dope, as having the Serato interface box built-in allows you to browse the music and do basically everything without ever touching the damn pc, you can even skip looking at it altogether if you setup things in a certain way and you mix entirely by ear and hand without need for key, waveforms and bpm counters. Add to all this the fact that the mixer itself is bomb, as far quality goes for both build and sound quality. Practical layout, excellent magnetic faders, and not too much blinking from the artifact. 8.5/10 since the eq's are good but shoud have been just as awesome as everything else instead. Just ask if there's something more you wonder
notectrl bro same here! Bought ttm57sl from eBay for $330 shipped and it arrives here nxt week, still gotta get a laptop tho I already have 1 ttable for now can’t wait! How’s the mixer so far since You’ve had ur mixer for 8 months now? Any settings faders advice or recommendations and I’m planning on replacing the face plate and the bottom plates to get that “new” feel to it 😝
Thank u so much. My issue was easily resolved through your video.
This video cleared up everything for me. Never understood how the music changed but never changed records.
This was cool, brotha 🤟🏼
Didn't know about DVS until this video. Pretty clever system =D
Skratch Bastid for president! How do you keep your gear dust free at night? a deck saver or just blankets (ect)
That explained so much! I went to see Grand Master Flash and Mix Master Mike live recently. I couldn't figure out why they never changed records, but this totally explains it. I can see why purists might have an issue with this, but to be honest it didn't affect my enjoyment of either gig.
Whenever something cheaper and more advantageous comes along (especially technology wise), all the money people have spent on their collection feels obsolete, but it is what it is. What matters is who got the heat and who doesnt tbh
a
Awesome explanation. Thank you.
Very good tutorial! 👍🏾
Wow. I've seen DJ's using it but didn't know what it was. Cool.
Didn't know this one. Interesting stuff
hi Paul, nice explanation of what is digital vinyls very clear, i'm from Uruguay and i'm want to know, if you can tell us the 10 basics equipments for beginners DJs?
Nice explanation, thank you.
I'm seriously contemplating getting this. I'm not into scratching, I bought my turntables to mix and enjoy my collection of progressive house classics, but I certainly would like to get more recent music on vinyl. Only problem is that many tracks were never released on vinyl. I checked and only about 20% of my digital collection (post 2010) was released on vinyl as well and many of those are hard to get or very expensive. There's so many awesome tracks that never made it onto vinyl. This would be the perfect alternative. Especially since a pair of xdj's would cost at least another €1400...
Thanks for the video, good explanation. Only thing I'm missing is how to set it up with the convertors etc. But I will definitely check this out.
great evolution
Thanks for the video, now I know! Long live the vinyl! 🧿🎶
thanks, my bro is a dj. got a dvs rig and i was wondering how they work. this is just what i was looking for, sending a link to my bro. thanks once again.
Man this dude was awesome thank you bro for years I wanted to know why they have the computer now I know 💯 on the lesson
maaan big up scratch bastid watched all yo vids ...would you plis do a video on all individual scratchs and incoorperate some dancehall even though your a hip hop dj . thanks bruv
the thing that i think anyone cant argue is its really cool to see old technology adapted to its future, like who would of thought ....so gewd
Thanks for this vid! i havent touched a deck sine '06 and want to get back but with a set up like this but had no idea how it work, thanks! Any advice on how to fully get a set up like this?
Loved this video. But I didn't understand if the sound is analog too, or it is just de experience of playing with turntables? I have a DDJ SX2 and I would like to add a couple of turntables in the future. And the other question is, can I change to play a real vinyl to the ones that are codified, at anytime I want? Thank you!
Hey ya ... Any chance you have critiqued or can critique the latest Recordbox DJ DVS ??
Amazing videos. Im an older guy looking to get into DJing, and especially interested in oldschool music and methods like turntablism
Thank you man!
Thanks, I thought the turntable gave information. But it's the Vinyl that does it and the computer does it. This is great because the hardware in DJ hardware is very limited compared to computers. Also because updating DJ hardware software-wise is more difficult instead of clicking "Next, Next, Install".
What’s the general speed of the record for songs you load to it? Is it standard at middle of 33?
I want to buy ttables, but do they have to have a usb connection or any ttable can be used like the ones here with serato vinyl? great video man! jus this part I did not get :)
good post my brother thank you
Nice job
Thank you!!!
Do you have to use a serato control record or can you just use any record you have?
Finally my question is ansewered !
Fast forward to 2023 and Phase!
I would love to know his setup?. what he did on the mixer, can you do that on a Traktor s4 mk2?
Yo bastid!!! Which would would you recommend as a low budget home use already own the geminis 2000 since before the year 2000…
Say I wanted the Kool Gee Rap album Road To The Riches.
Do I buy it electronically so that it's stored on my lap top to use through Serato?
That's kind of cool
Never seen this before
I'm using a simple mixer though
I love this guy
Legendary Dj that not againts Controllers or Cdjs
BTW you should try Virtual DJ 8 and compare it with Serato
I want to listen your review about it, cuz now Virtual Dj was made a big change to be the best Dj-ing System :)
outstanding ( looking for a post like this ) old school dj here ( jamaica , queens ) new york city love my 1200 mk2s but is this good for me
Thanks bro 😎
If i have virtual dj and a pioneer sr2 mixer what what dvs do you recomend or vynil code
Is this DVS part of the software package then? Could you use the same set up to dj actually vinyl records in the traditional way? I'm looking to get into DJing and have a small vinyl collection I'd like to use but also love the possibilities of using any digital song you have with a vinyl scratching feel!
Basically wondering what specifically is added to a traditional vinyl setup to allow digital interaction. Output of record player into a ADC and then out a DAC from the computer into the mixer? Simple as that?
Hey Scratch Bastid, can i use a Behringer DJX 900 for Digital Vinyl? (Do i need a Mixer with Midi Output for the Software?). What kind of Mixer do you use? King Regards
Lui :-)
Hello, I am learning to DJ and I am trying to set up my equipment: 2 Omnitronic BD-1390 Turntables Black, 1 Gemini Sound PMX-10 2, 1TimeCode control Vinyl, a laptop with Virtual DJ. I use Deezer to stream music in virtual DJ. Will I make it or something isn't matching in my equipment?
Cool stuff ) Is it possible to play vinyl on DVS ?
I plan to buy a DVS system but I'm a little bit confused with the choices.. Most of the solutions I found cost the same price.. I have difficulties to choose between Denon DJ DS1 with Serato or Pioneer Interface 2 with Rekordbox. I'm not a pro DJ, I only use at "home for fun". Compatibility with club set up isn't an issu for me as I don't use it elswhere.. Both costs 300€... Any advice ?
nice tutorial but one thing how do you wire up your equipment to use dvs , no one has ever done that
EXCELLENT
DJ playlist in the house :)
So would this be a great way to learn to mix vinyl without having to hunt down crates of vinyl to start?
Yupp, absolutely. Remember to use Absolute mode if that's your goal, this way you won't have access to hotcues and all that, and will be forced to pick the cue point manually every time. Avoid looking at the pc screen entirely if you want to go the radical way, with no aids in the form of tracks' waveforms, bpm and tonality. Have fun !
i dj'ed when there was only vinyl and we didn't have this technology. It was always a pain in the ass when you hear a track you love and had to track down the vinyl and most of the time you couldn't find it. I wish we had this technology back then. Save me a lot of time and money
Where did you buy all your vinyl records?
I feel like this would be really good to use after a good few years of using actual vinyl
Thanks!!!!
Came across a reference to "control vinyl" on Sweetwater, had no idea what it was, now I know! 🧠
Such cool technology. I don't need it, I can't afford it, but I want it. 🤩 Ha. Thanks for making this.
Serato for my eyes, Traktor for my ears.
so now that I know what a DVS system is, why would I chose this system as opposed to a controller system? what are the pros and cons
Cool DJ Scratch
First I'd like to say thank you for creating these videos. I'm an old school DJ. I use to love creating my own remixes using vinyl and knowing where the pitch control went. I'm also expert in blending. Well I sold my equipment 10 years ago because of financial reasons and I was giving it up for good. Well I got the urge to spin again so I bought 1200s, Pioneer mixer and new cartridges and needles. Next up is Serato and a lap top then I want to sell my mixer and get a Rane. Now I never used a mixer with all the sample buttons. Could you do a video teaching how to use them and how to use them when your rocking a party? Thx and I really enjoyed your videos. Btw I was never nice on the cut but now I'm dedicating time into becoming a better scratcher and transforms. Any cuts you be willing to teach would be grest. I saw the chirp scratch video.btw I never sold my vinyl.
How can u use non technics turntables? Dont u like the feel of them over say pioneer or reloop?
Hi. Do you need a special mixer vor serato and Traktor?
So,it means that if I change physical vinyl into a time code vinyl, I can turn my turntable into DVS , right?
Question. Do time code records have “sides”? Like if one side is worn, can you flip it over and use the other side?
Mostly it’s a question I’ve always had about DVS.
As far as Serato goes; one side has 10min play length, the other 15min which means the music on the latter will be more condensed (think LP vs 12" in analogue vinyl terms).... Generally; the 10mins will be better for turntable manipulation, but there may be times when where the other side will be necessary (eg. playing a rack that is longer than 10 minutes or if you've designed your own scratch tools 'record').
Break down bro. Love from 805, Oxnard CA
Hey i have a question. Can i use my downloaded songs from my computer and control them with my turntables. Sorry for my english its not my first language.
Mete İdil yes you can
What gear do you use?
I learnt to DJ on Technics 1210,s and are recently getting back into DJing. People tell me that the skills I collected when learning are of no importance now. The Beat matching and many other things are done for you. Its always in my head that if you dont understand the fundamentals of BPM matching and how to drop tracks in, when playing , and where to drop them , its like building a house. You need solid foundations or no matter how good the house appears its going to suffer at some point, or are other DJ;s right and the old knowledge I have is of no importance now. I have a lap top with virtual DJ but dont know if to get new decks and Digital Vinyl or just a controller as I have all my old vinyl in digital now anyway. What would you suggest? Respect!
The question is what are the pros and cons on scratching while digital or analogue. Are there still pros on analogue and are the pros any relevant?
I'm wanting to learn more 🥶🥶🥶
Salve DJ Scratch 🇧🇷
can anyone help me out...what Daw should i need to record sounds play them through Dvs to scratch them up make some patterns, to then be played/recorded back into a daw to re record so that is what would be your beats, I have a rane ttm56 mixer- technic 1200s, would it basically have to be 32 bit ableton live bridged to like a serato ssl3-4 box?? or can traktor be linked to Reason or something can't seem to figure this out, would love it to be done through Reason, had Ableton for a while now but actually miss Reason, cheers if anyones responses
Make a video on your dvs set up what you yous for this video
I have a question... the digital sound coming from your record I notice it when away as soon as your started playing music but on mine it play the music but still has the bussing sound I'm not sure what is going... my turn table is design to use DVS. any hints?
You can hear the beeping sound also coming directly from the needle. The Serato second generation vinyls are the loudest. Traktor vinyls are more quiet also because the tone is higher. It sometimes bothers me too when mixing in a quiet environment with open headphones you can hear the control tone all the time.
