this makes me happy for my small collection of black glass from northern california, an area not mentioned. And I have one that is a very small rectangular bottle bottom with decorative edges and it is greyish purple in light
Not as common to your area, true, but you never know...there were 19th c American whaling ships, Spanish and Russian merchants sailing between Hawai'i, the PNW and China/Philippines and shipwrecks and strandings were not uncommon. I have found the occasional rare old black sea glass shard on a few Hawaiian beaches, too ( and am pretty sure they aren't 1980's cheap champagne bottles, hahaha!)
you’re in a supremely great place to find black sea glass - centuries of old settlement areas where black glass vessels were used to hold liquids, fromI think the late 1500s on, the quality of the sea glass you find up there is usually very good - we’ll- tumbled and weathered with few rough edges and lots of frosting. The funny thing I find in Seaham is that much of your black sea glass shards resemble your rocks and pebbles. It can be difficult to differentiate between them sometimes.!
Thank you so much for this.. There isn't much information out there on black glass. I recently found some and immediately I knew it was very old from the thickness, how worn it was and what looks like air bubbles in it. I almost threw it back but changed my mind and kept it. I'm so glad I did now! 😊
as far as sea glass is concerned, you are really, really holding history in your hand with a shard of thick, bubbles old black glass. lucky you to find such a piece.
@@dr.beachcomb4221 Yes, I did.. it's dark green! I have parts of the kick up from the base of the bottle, a neck and some other bits. When I found them I thought they were pieces of stone because they were so thick and crude and dark, but when I looked closer I saw that they were sort of glistening in the sand so I picked them up and realized that they were actually pieces of glass..loll!! I can't believe I almost threw them away!
I have found what I believe to be a piece of black sea glass off the coast of california but I was wondering if I could send you a picture of it in order to see what you think. It's a very odd shape and I'm not sure what it would have came from. It is incredibly thick too
Yes, message it to me either through my Facebook page (Dr. Beachcomb TM) or my blog on my website - www.dsrbeachcomb.com. But first, can you shine a light through it (even on the edge) to see any color? If so, what color? See any bubbles? And is it heavy or thick?
LOVE FROM SCOTLAND , great instructions !, iam sparky and have a lot of black glass from culzean beach scotland, the castle is at the water's edge, and i think it might have much to do with all the black and green finds.
Yesterday I found some pieces of black glass here in Western Australia! I thought they were black stones. However when I got them home I found if I hold them up to the sun they look olive green. How old would they be? I’m new to the Seaglass game! I also found some very light amber pieces, dark amber and various shades of green. One green piece looks part of a bottle rim. Our oceans are wild here so all the pieces were really frosted
you are in prone territory for finding shards of very old ‘black’ glass m, which are actually deep ambers, olive greens and sonetines even, tho rarely, a deep blue, purple or Ruby red. find an edge or thinner area to shove the light theu. if it turns out to be totally black, that’s often newer champagne bottles but I wager what you are finding, if it’s very worn and weathered, is the rum bottle stuff dating back to 17th-19th centuries
@@dr.beachcomb4221 yes recently found a huge thick piece and it is actually deep ruby when you shine light through it. The other was deep green thanks for replying.
I just found a piece of glass on the hatteras island really close to where Blackbeard buried his treasure. I was curious if you could give me any info on this piece. It's small and curved. If you have an email I can send you a picture. I'm extremely interested in learning about this subject. Thank you!
Aloha my name is Stephanie I'm from oahu,hi.I found thie piece of black sea glass today on one of our beaches here in hawaii!! I would not know how to identify it, would u be able to help me? It is a bottom pieceThank u for your time!!

I have also found Black Sea glass in Australia Sydney, thanks for sharing 🦘
hahaha - that’s because of early explorers and lots of old renegade types there back in the 1800’s!
If it’s thick and bubbled, could be from early settlement days...
I live in Newfoundland and I have some very impressive black glass pieces
cool! you are in an interesting corner of the Beachcombing world.

Does the floor tile glow under light as well?
Now it is much denser and uniformly thick.
