Looking forward to doing this with our front yard. We've spent over $300 this year for professional lawn care and regardless, our lawn was half-destroyed by the dry conditions this summer. To hell with lawns. Iowa native wildflowers from now on!
I think it is great to note how incredibly important it is to plant these types of flowers now to support our pollinators like bees and butterflies that are in danger of extinction. This and planting these close to vegetable gardens can help support beneficial bugs that will help support and protect our food crops.
The seeds I purchased from American Meadows is fantastic, I planted a mini meadow and after sowing, had a little bit left and tossed it on a bald spot in the lawn, and the area is covered with wild flower seedlings, this is high quality seed, well worth the price.
Got my seed from you guys a few days ago and today I'm ready to plant. I decided to check out youtube for some tips and by sure luck I came upon your video. Thanks for the advice and wish me luck!!!
We loved our wildflower meadow last year. I didn’t mow it at the end of the season. I liked how it looked in the winter and the birds liked it as well. I tilled it all in the spring and the lasted again I assume we lost all our perennials doing it this way. Might try the mowing method this year with late fall sending
I think this is a good video except for the end. The only part that was not explained well was, why to mow at the end of the season. I went to your website and it did explain that the reason to mow was to keep tree saplings from taking over areas that are planted close to tree lines.
Wow, I got a little confused at the end of the FAQ's in the video about mowing, but you just clarified actually what I didn't understand. I have an area I really planted good this year under a Blue Spruce and noticed a lot of saplings popping up. Now it's clear to me what the mowing instructions prevent! But your comment made me visualize what confused me, hehe! Thanks to both you and American Meadows for helping me get ready for the coming 1st frost here in Denver, excited to get my seeds in the ground before winter this year! 🏵️🌾🌻🍄🍂🐝 🦋 🪺
If you really want the advantage of wildflowers, make sure they are native to your area. Natives are already specialized to your land. Too many of the "wildflower" seed mixes are full of species that are not even from the same continent where the mix is sold!
After the growing season and when the flowers drop their seeds, will annuals grow again the following year? Also what about colder climates, areas that get really cold and have snow? Can you winterize?
You're welcome! You can also see our planting guide for details about planting wildflowers in fall: www.americanmeadows.com/fall-planting-wildflower-seeds
Thinking about "nuking" a steep unwalkable hillside (50' wide x almost 20' tall) with wild flowers. Currently it is full of 5-leaf ivy, poison ivy and wild grape. I've heard that sowing at first frost in fall, the repeating frost/thaw cycles will get more seeds into the soil. Any thoughts? I DO NOT want to sow crown vetch which AGWAY sells here in SW PA.
If I want to winterover my yard that is only an inch and a half of dirt over gravel. Do I put black plastic down all winter or what . I have 3clumps of ornamental grasses to put in pots . I’m 72 and doing this by my self In a tw. Park in Md. can anyone help.
I did not understand your comment about after the growing season and mowing. What did you mean about a meadow being next to a wooded area and if you do NOT mow it increases your chances of succession?
I'm working 5k feet. I use a Stihl cultivator mm56. After working the ground each direction to help cut up grass. I use my JD lawn tractor to blow cut grass or weed off my ground. So after sowing. I ise cultivator agsin to lightly to settle seeds in the ground. Big question is the JD lawn tractor to heavy to bury seeds.

I don't know if you reply to comments or not but 1) My dad told me to not step on the seeds or do anything to press them because I might get seeds stuck on my shoes and then they won't grow. Does he have a good point or should I still do it? I just planted them today and the soil is a little muddy. Will the rain press it down? 2) Is it a good idea to cut the flower heads off with a trimmer in late fall rather than mowing it?

JBtheExplorer they make bags for each different region of the country so as long as you buy for the area you live in it'll be native. That's why the bag he had said Northeast.

Hell yeah! Once it’s established, you won’t have to do a thing to maintain it! And it’s way prettier, too!

How’s the areas you planted now .
Great Video.
Going over a sown area with a roller is not required when sowing just prior to a good rain. 👍 😊
Just bought a pound of seed, 3 types, nice lady on the phone was very helpful.
Thanks for these 2 videos. Exactly what I needed to understand. If I wasn't in Europe I'd certainly buy American Meadows seeds :)

I accidentally bought one but at least it's mostly made up of us natives
is the end of the growing season winter? im from NY
i didnt understand what you're saying at 4:50 about the tree line and natural succession of WHAT if you dont mow?
Great Videos! Thanks for posting! :)
Will wildflowers spread to the neighbors yard in gaps though the fence?
After the growing season and when the flowers drop their seeds, will annuals grow again the following year? Also what about colder climates, areas that get really cold and have snow? Can you winterize?
Yes the seeds will drop and grow new flowers next spring and seeds will go dorment in the winter
So you don't remove the clippings after mowing?
😍🦋🐝🏆🌱 thank YOU for this vital information!

Sow in late Fall or early Winter, prior to a good rain.
At the end of the growing season once you have mowed it . Do you re rotivate every year and repeat the same process

I did not understand your comment about after the growing season and mowing. What did you mean about a meadow being next to a wooded area and if you do NOT mow it increases your chances of succession?
They say that if you do not keep the tree line mowed, the trees will expand into your meadow.
Mowing is counter productive in a meadow - nature knows nothing about lawn mowers. 😊
Good video thank you

Wild flower seeds require light to germinate. Don't bury them, regardless of the method.
When to plant? Late winter , early spring ? Thank you.
Mid, Late Fall, or Early Winter.
Just prior to a good rain.

What is the answer to this question please? I don't have a roller. Is it really necessary and if so, what do I use instead please?

Is it better to plant in the fall in NE PA? Thank you!
Ask your cooperative extension, usually through county or state.
What's zone? To plant that seed.
What happens if the grass grows under the flowers?
Nothing, those are wild flowers and are used to grow between grass
I just brought some seeds, wild flowers
SANDY SOILS ~ WHAT TYPE WOULD YOU SUGGEST OF WILD FLOWERS MIGHT THRIVE IN IT? GREY WOLF

Our seeds are 100% pure seed - no fillers added! Batches of our seeds are tested for germination rates - and they're guaranteed to grow!
Ohh it's a sales thing.
yep
I don't see anywhere on the bag saying 100% native. That's shameful.

When you buy seeds by the pound, why would you want to pay for filler when a bag of sand is cheap?
