Building New Raised Beds / Starting Garden From Scratch

  • We've moved! We have a brand new yard and are starting the garden completely over, but this gives us an opportunity to do things even better! First year gardens can be a pain, compost and worm casings take time, but luckily we bypass that by using my potted soil from the old house. Jammed with worms and all kinds of goodies! This is part 1 of a 2 part series, watch out for the next video on how we fill the beds in, we'll explore the lasagna method and it's benefits!

    I should have mentioned, we got this untreated lumber extremely cheap, and we are only looking to get 2 years out of these beds. The goal is to buy land in the next year and develop something more permanent. Since we rent this house, permanence isn't an option and most other raised bed styles were more expensive. We built and filled all 3 beds for $120.

      My whole summer last year was based on that method and the plants didn't do well at all. The soil we have here is clay and doesn't drain. It would probly work better down south where there's more sand. I have multiple videos up on that method.

      When I lived in rentals, I grew everything in half barrels and nursery pots of that size. If you plan on doing the raised beds at the new place, spend the extra dollars up front and buy cypress or the heartwood of a hardwood, you will save money in the long run. Spread plastic sheets over the area for at least a couple of weeks before hand to solarize the soil. This will help kill the weeds, seeds, and nematodes. A couple of layers of clean, no waxes or glossy ink, cardboard or at least a half dozen layers of clean newspaper will stop many weeds and bugs from coming up from below. If you have a problem with moles or voles, put a layer of chicken wire or hardwear cloth under the bed.

    • @clyderaw
      @clyderaw 2 роки тому

      Nina, y’all did a fantastic job putting those beds together. They look great. You have to work with what you have to work with and in the circumstances y’all did just fine. If you had access to a tiller you could grind up that dirt/clay and do as one person mentioned take some River soil or sand and mix with it. I know all about making do with what I have and when you are renting, like me, you only have a few options and you picked a good one. By the way I enjoy your channel. I never miss a video and God bless y’all,

    Your beds turned out great. Might be surprised how many years you can get out of those. More than you think. I use 40 gallon plastic barrels. Cut them lengthwise like two canoes. Then I stacked them in a holder that looks like a bunkbed frame. Same foot space but twice the grow space. Water the top and it drains out into the bottom one. No ground bugs either. • @troyboy6169
    @troyboy6169 2 роки тому +1

    Glad to see ya gardening again. I have used raised beds in the past but I always put some sort of weed guard down over the grass layer. This keeps most of the grass and weeds from growing upward. I'm not sure the lumber you used will last very many years. If you ever get a location that you own, then put concrete blocks down for the edges. Costs more but lasts forever.

    The grass will grow around the plants later which will be alright!
    Soak those seeds overnight, Very Important to do so!
    They swell up and germinate quicker!
    I plant mine on full moon or new moon, they grow better!

    Treated fence pickets work great too. Cheaper. The chemical used in the treatment process is safe for gardening. To save your back from digging, use cardboard to line the bottom, it kills the grass. Caulk the seams if you double stack. Water will seep out if you don't.
