The fact he sings 'I long for peace before I die' and he knew he was about to die, and did pass away just a few months later, is so impactful. The whole atmosphere of this song is spine-tingling. Rest in peace to Freddie.

Considering how frail Freddie was at the time of recording this take, the sound he makes is borderline miraculous. And I can never hear this without my eyes welling up. Every damn time.

This song always makes me so sad. 😢😢 Freddie last vocals. And the last verse he sang, I long for peace before I die. To know that’s the last verse he ever recorded just hits hard. And that Brian had to finish the song because he was to sick that he never made it back to the studio. It makes me cry every time I hear it.

  • @clarenceflam

This song makes me very emotional and that last verse chills me as it is Brian May the guitarist who had to complete the final vocals as Freddie was too sick to return to finish the track. The very last moment where you hear the music speed out is all of their songs being played backwards in time to the baby crying. Very very emotive. These final vocals were laid down in May of 1991 and the same time period when Queen recorded their final video for These are the days of our lives.

    GUYS....
THANK YOU, so much for reacting to this!!!
This is one of my favorite songs, it's so beautiful and REAL.
I know a lot of folks "don't like" it because it's so SAD - and it IS - but I just find it so meaningful... Freddie sang with his ENTIRE SOUL until the very last minute... and then the fact that Brian went back (seven years later, I think) to finish it for us, is such a testament to their friendship.

It's the improvised callout to the crowd that later came to define almost every legendary Queen concert. What started as an improvised interaction with the crowd at a Queen concert in Montreal during 1978, "Ay-Oh!" became a hallmark of their most momentous performances.
Who can forget their 20-minute set at Live Aid in 1985, when Freddie Mercury had the entire 80,000 strong crowd inside Wembley Stadium within the palm of his hand? Roger on Freddie: "For 20-odd years, I had the best seat in the house, watching the best front man in the world."

  • @philipgolia9803
    @philipgolia9803 5 місяців тому +2

There is so much to that song that is so meaningful. First, Freddie was very sick when they were recording it. He said he would be back in the morning to finish the vocals. That was the last time he was in the studio as he soon passed. The final verse of Mother Love was Brian May (as Freddie never made it back to finish). Then the all the music samples you hear was every Queen song, a small sample, played very fast. Then the "Think I'm Goin Back" verse is the first verse ever recorded/released by Freddie as Larry Lereux, followed by a baby crying to represent the birth of Freddie. It is a very emotional Queen song once you know the history of it.

Freddie was too exhausted to continue and said “I’ll finish it the next time I come to the studio” - and never came back. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he died in Nov 1991 without finishing the song.
When going through the vocals tracks recorded during these final sad months to assemble the posthumous Queen album Made In Heaven a couple of years later, Brian recorded the final verse.
The switch to Brian singing the last part shatters my heart every time, *knowing* that Freddie was gone - he gave everything he had until he simply couldn’t do it any more. What a beautiful, brave Legend he was !

“Mother Love” was the final song co-written by Freddie and Brian, and was also Freddie’s last-ever vocal performance. Freddie’s vocals for "Mother Love" were recorded between 13-16 May 1991. On his website, Brian discussed the writing process he and Freddie had (writing both separately and together and being conscious of the nature of the song and the lyrics).
Upon reaching the final verse, Freddie told Brian that he had to go and “have a rest”, but that he would return later and finish it. After that, Freddie never made it back to the studio, and thus Brian sang the last verse of the track.
Freddie passed away on November 24, 1991.

    BTW Guys,
That verrrrry LAST line at the end: "I think I'm going back....." etc, was Freddie singing:
"GOIN' BACK" under the name LARRY LUREX, c. 1973-74 (I'm not sure of the year)
It's a REALLY LOVELY song!! (And it's another example of how Fred could make his voice sound COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.)

This was Freddie's very last song but he was not able to complete it so Brian finishes the final verse. Brian would not let anyone else touch this song after Freddie's death because he said he knew exactly what Freddie wanted. When the others felt strong enough to do so, they went back into the studio and finished this song for Freddie. This is such a beautiful song and I can so understand how if you knew you were close to the end of your life, coming to the grave understanding that you had it all wrong, all along. It was never about all the things you thought you wanted or needed, it was all about feeling the pure and unconditional love that you would have felt as a child from your mother. Love always was the only true answer and yet we searched for it in all the wrong ways. This song tosses me back and forth between goosebumps and tears. Thank you for your reaction

This was his last recorded song before he died. Infact, he didn't finish. Brian sang last verse. I believe the the song was about Freddy longing for comfort from his suffering...to be safe and loved. And, acceptance of his fate. Hauntingly beautiful. The end was every Queen recording, bits, run through high speed. I would have loved to see them live too. Although, I did see Brian open for guns n roses in 93. 🙂

As others have said, this was Freddie's final recording. Apparently, after laying down the first verse Freddie had said that he was tired so he'd go home to rest and would return later. Unfortunately, later never came and Freddie passed before he could complete the track. Hearing Brian's voice after the bridge never fails to bring me to tears, because we knew that our dear Freddie had lost his battle.

    Guys,
Another song you need to react to:
    “Face It Alone”
    Official LYRIC video
This NEW song was released by Queen in October 2022 and immediately went to Number 1… in 21 countries!
(The song came from recordings of Freddie during Queen’s 1989 recording sessions… the original recordings were just of Fred improvising during a jam session. Queen’s tech people were able to “rescue” his voice singing the rough verses, so that the song could be finished.)
There’s also an official music video, but I honestly think the official LYRIC video is BETTER for a first-time listen.

“He still had astonishing power in his lungs at that point, I really don’t know where it came from. During the recording of ‘Mother Love,’ he starts low and gentle, but Freddie chose to push himself and go higher. We looked at each other and knew there was a mountain to climb. That’s when the vodka really went down. He said, 'I will hit these notes.’ And he did. He soars to incredible heights, and this is a man who can’t really stand anymore without incredible pain and is very weak, you know, has no flesh on his bones , and you can hear the power, the will that he’s still hot. It was a wonderful performance.” - Brian May

They combine at the end with samples of Mercury's famous 'deh-doh!' vocal interludes with the crowd from Live at Wembley 1986, the synth intro to "One Vision," and a sample from his very first single, "Goin' Back" in 1972, which he performed vocals on under the pseudonym of Larry Lurex. In the context of the song it is obviously meant to show the cyclical nature of life and death, and a man looking back across the entire spectrum of his life and career.

If you want to get a real taste of Queen I think you need to listen to their first two albums especially. Some say they are not essential listening but if you take those albums you can see the setup was in place for A Night At The Opera in 1975 and from which Boh Rhap comes from. By contrast on the same album a track Called The Prophets Song shows just how their multi track vocal work really is their trademark but also as Brighton Rock in 74 launched the guitar solos the prophets song is like a vocal Brighton Rock with multi repeats like the solos. Check it and hear just how good they were going to be. KEEP YOURSELF ALIVE, MARCH OF THE BLACK QUEEN, THE WHITE QUEEN...... Go for it 👍

I can't imagine how Brain must have felt when he sang the last part of the song, instead of Freddie 😢

Freddie couldn't finish this song, he got too tired and went home. Unfortunately that was the last time he was in the studio. Brian had to finish the vocal.
