  • Least we forget the simplest of passenger spaces - third class. Where humble working-class immigrants would spend their savings for a passage to the United States for a new life.
This video has been recorded from previous demos and other unreleased content. It is a preview of our past work and is not representative of the final game. Certain sections will be updated in our Alpha and final game due to new research and work from our team and upgrades in the Unreal Engine.

It boggles my mind that so many people think you were "dirt poor" in third class. This wasn't a cruise vacation - this was travel. If you typically fly economy in the present time, you'd be sailing in 3rd class back then. This was 75-80% of society. Second class was even smaller than first. My great-grandpa crossed the Atlantic on an Italian ship called "Oceania" in 1910 and traveled 3rd class. He had to be practical in order to make his money last for a year in the US. He came from a middle class family. Being "dirt poor" couldn't get you inside a ship, period. If that was the case, you'd have to save money for a few years.

I did a little bit of research on this and a third class ticket would have cost you the equivalent to about $1,000 today (give or take). That's definitely not "dirt poor!" I can't imagine the cost for entire families and how much saving they did before their journey. Sad so many didn't make it.

It almost feels like I'm on the ship, I can't imagine how it feels to actually play it. However long it takes to finish, it will be well worth the wait. To just be able to tour the Titanic as a virtual museum will be incredible, and a dream come true for many. As well as a game, I can see this being used as an educational tool. Keep up the amazing work team, I hope it gets a console release as well as PC.

For as bad a rap as third class gets, this was pretty luxurious for the time. Wasn't many years prior where things like semi-private cabins and dinners with actual table service would have been unthinkable. White Star's business model was to encourage word of mouth marketing, and repeat sailings for former immigrants visiting home. As such, third class on the Olympics was as good as second on some ships of the era. The poor survival rates can be attributed to being too far from the boats, and that maze of corridors. Segregating the classes via nondescript locked doors certainly didn't help.

But if you compare it to Mauretania/Lusitania and post 1909 liners, then it was on par. For example, the third class dining room on Lusitania looked nicer than Titanic, with proper wooden panelling, making it look more like Titanic's second class dining room. Tough Olympic class did offer more space to third class than Lusitania.

It felt so eerie, the piano music similar to this, as the team went through doors I’d walked into, the gym I’d played in, the cupboards we got a row for hiding in, the school stage, the whole lot. Toys, coats, drawings, books, left behind. Teachers’ writing still on the blackboard, now lying of course in bits on the floor.. Quite emotional. Anyone young reading this....yeah if you’re gonna go into old buildings for the.love of goodness show some respect please.. • @jackvolta3489
      @jackvolta3489 3 роки тому +10

Fully agree everything in todays building materials is aimed at saving $$ where solid wood, and certain metals & real leathers were used years ago, are now replaced with plastics, vinyl & simulated wood veneers, and there's no need to go inside a ship to see this, just look at your automobile, unless its a 57 Chevy you'll see all kinds of fake replacements all aimed at saving $$ I mean except for trucks when was the last time you've seen a set of chrome steel bumpers on a car? it seems like airbags are the replacement for real bumpers and if you've noticed most airbags have recalls on them. It seems that with every step forward in innovation, only brings us 2 steps back. And if the Titanic never hit that iceberg there's no doubt in my mind it would still be around today, unless of course it was sold for scrap. The sad fact is building for strength and Elegance only exist in days gone by and will never return for us to experience. Only in history can we imagine what our ancestors called innovating in 1912

Wood paneling and decking as an example, is a fire hazard and is largely banned by modern marine fire codes. Its also is expensive to maintain because the salt and the dampness of a marine environment accelerates deterioration.
Titanic did use "synthetic" materials however. A lot of the flooring used in first-class, including the 3rd class lounge you see at the end of the video, used patterned linoleum tiles! Alot of 3rd class floors were also covered with a hard rubbery substance called litosito (which you see as the reddish looking floors early in the video)

After watching the walk through for the 1st and 2nd class, I noticed something that maybe contributed to the loss of lives on 3rd class. I noticed that there is no continuous staircase from bottom to top for steerage passengers. It's like the were meant to remain below. Then imagine yourself as an immigrant in a maze of corridors tryong to find your way without knowing even a morsel of the english language. Yikes!

Absolutely. Basically every third class survivor said as much, and the surviving crew members who worked those areas all agreed that navigation was one of the two main factors in the appalling death toll.
The other, more easily avoidable factor, was lack of effective communication between the senior crew members and the stewards, who ended up being unable to give the steerage passengers complete and accurate information about what was going on.

0:00 video starts on F deck, the Starboard forward section. Looks to be near cabin F37 or F39. Loops around to the Portside and heads upstairs.
1:12 E deck, Portside and goes over to Starboard, takes another flight of stairs up.
2:18 D deck, the Third-Class Open Space near the very front of the ship.
6:01 Back to E deck, takes Scotland Road, a long uninterrupted hallway on the Port side of the ship all the way aft.
9:00 Now on D deck near the very back of the ship, takes a flight of stairs up to C deck and goes right (Starboard) behind the stairs to the Third-Class General Room.
12:00 Now goes over to Port behind the stairs to the Third-Class Smoke Room.
