Here's the thing, in the 90's retail for a deck was around $50, blanks or shop boards $25-35, "nicer" decks $60-70.
Pretty comparable to now if you ask me.
As an adult, I'm more willing to pay $60-70 for a deck I want. As a kid, I was always trying to figure out ways to snag a deck for $15-20

When I was growing up I would experiment all the time with wheelbase. I would redrill my boards to have two or three sets of holes so I could move my trucks around and see what felt best. This was back in the old days of the 80s and 90s when I was comin up and nobody did that shit, but I could feel a difference in how it moved and flipped etc.I would also reshape my boards by taking a hand plainer or wood shaver and shaving down the sides and reshaping them so yeah I was kind of a freak like that I guess haha.

My stuck on a deadstock Enjoi decks dimensions.
8.5 width, 14.25 wheelbase, 32.1 length, squarish shape not narrow, steep tail and nose. 6.5 length tail.
I’m so obsessed with these dimensions now. It’s hot pressed and it’s epoxy with fiber glass
I even had big convos about dimensions with TOM ASTA helped push him into a board that he’s riding right now, because of the wheelbase is similar to what he was riding for ever, but he went up to a 8.25 from a 8. And he didn’t like the 14.25 wheelbase. I told him to try the Fabiana deck it’s 8.25 w 14.00 wheelbase. He’s been pushing that now.

I’ve soon skated a year with my custom shape 4-ply maple + fiber glass & carbon fiber hybrid board with plastic reinforced tips and I couldn’t be happier! It’s a super light combo (especially with Tensor Mag Lights), it’s still stiff and still has the same pop and with my mostly smooth concrete & wood transition skating hasn’t even razored too bad yet, and when it does, it being a 7” twin tip I can easily file the tips a couple times without it affecting the performance much.
I agree there are eco questions about manufacturing hybrid boards like mine, but them lasting twice as long affects the green-ness of it, too, ie. it’s using less wood due to the composite layers and needs less frequent replacements because it simply won’t crack (even landing off-bolts) in regular use and wears down slower.

    • @darude
      @darude 3 місяці тому

@@protestthisyouloser1093 Yes, and no. It's not a flight deck, but similar technology, better in my biased opinion ;). Napalm Custom (napalmcustom.com), the Finnish company that makes my board has numerous different moulds with different concaves, tail angles etc. and and can cut into pretty much any shape. And the bottom is slick plastic, graphic under it, so doesn't wear off immediately. And board/nose/tail slides for days. Their ready made shapes range from the full price new models 155€ to their occasional sales, those generally go around 100€. You CAN customise the graphic and shape, which for a one-off will add to that a good bit, depending on the amount of customization, but with a bulk order gets more affordable. You'd have to ask them about those specifics. Also, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't directly copy somebody's mould & shape, nor print copyrighted graphics, if you are thinking about that. That said, they ARE skaters, so I'd bet there's some renegade in them... ;) Edit: For eg. vert veteran Sandro Diaz rides a Napalm Custom board, has his own model, and Finnish Paris Olympic Games representative 13yo Heili Sirviö rides an H-Street Napalm-made board, as well.

It’s strange how Snowboard brands show every spec of the board but skate brands have never shown exact measurements/specs. The best skaters had the shittiest boards at the skatepark I grew up near. it’s not the board it’s you. Just enjoy whatever you are riding…❤

It would be nice if we lived in an economy where he could actually provide custom boards in smaller bundles for individual customers who just want 10-20 boards for themselves. I get that would flop the skate industry but it would be ideal for many skaters.

Providing custom board dimensions for the individual consumer is not lucrative anywhere. Capitalism defines industry the world over and your not absolved from it you absurd person. That was a poor response.

If boards never warped I'd totally buy a stack of 50 with my favourite off the shelf shape. I once was involved in a skate company startup and I went to Watson Laminates (Maple) and picked out 3 shapes and they made a run of boards with them. Never thought about it for me though. That would kick ass. I ride Mini Logo blanks now because I crave consistency and at least I know I get the same board year in and year out. Noses are too short for my liking but I sacrifice for the consistency (plus I ride a 7.5 and they are so hard to find I need that constant supply).

I always knew I needed a longer wheelbase, I figured it out about 10 years ago. I then took an old beater deck and drilled the truck holes to be 3/4" further from the center on both ends, lengthening the wheelbase from like 14.5" to 16", pretty much as close as I could get them to the nose and tail. It was WAY too much, but it made the board much more stable pumping through the bowl. I went to the skateshop after that, and requested "the longest wheelbase you have in stock, sir" and the owner was like, woah, nobody's ever asked me THAT before... and we also had matching wrist plate surgery scars. It was a big day for both of us.
Also, if you want a fun one, take an old board and mount the trucks to the nose and tail, so the whole deck rides like a half inch off the ground and you're completely between the trucks, it feels like a snowboard kinda...
And don't worry, no longboards were used in the process of these experiments lol.

I have the symmetrical Bury the Hatchet Toy Machine deck from PSStix. Its 8.25 with a 14.5 wheelbase. I'd love to get 50 customs where we keep it 8.25 but stretch it out to a 15" wheelbase for my longer legs. 15 is perfect for 6ft but everything is 8.5 and up typically. We need a mix of old and new. Keep the wheelbases longer but bring back the skinny boards. An 8 or 8.25 with a 15 would be my dream deck
