    Hi everyone, we just wanted to highlight that this video was shot well before the 2019 rules of golf revisions. We have since produced a range of new rules videos relating to these changes on our UA-cam channel. If you are interested in rules content, please take a look at these videos as they should offer clarification on how best to proceed in various situations. Thanks.

      Excellent video content! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (do a search on google)? It is a good one of a kind product for revealing an effortless golf swing technique without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my good mate called Gray after a lifetime of fighting got amazing success with it.

      The most ludicrous rule for the recreational golfer is when you hit your ball off the tee. You get out to where it landed and it's not there....cannot find it. YEAH RIGHT...I'm going back to the tee and hit again. Riiiiight !

    • @MrDaryboy
      @MrDaryboy 9 років тому +9

      RD S I have never understood the rules issue. I like to play within the rules as much as possible so my score is accurate to the game, but some rules are obvious silly such as the "must say I'm hitting a provisional" Who doesn't know when I guy hits another from the tee it's a not a provisional? Does it really need to be said?
      With all that said it really comes down to the group to agree on how penalties and other things will be played. For example, I played in league and there were many of guys who would end up in trouble. They would ask "are we playing that?" My answer is simple and always the same, I don't care what you do to an extent but just know I will do the same. If I'm in a match for bragging rights or money then I can and will use the same rules as you do. If your a ball fluffer then I will fluff too. If your taking 4 foot gimmes so will I. Pretty simple. It's the goons who break the rules in many ways then call you out for grounding a club in a hazard that I can't stand.

  • @tchevrier
    @tchevrier 7 років тому +21

    those may be the rules by the letter of the law, however, in recreational golf on most golf courses, you have to maintain a pace of play and if you start walking back to the tee box, you're going to be asked politely to do something physically impossible with your club.

      The new rules have been announced and they fixed a few things and made a few things worse. Golfers are already confused about most of it. Especially the new rule that lets you go from OB and drop in the fairway.
      The new rules changes are a mess. They didn’t really simplify anything.

      I agree, and most of us don't follow them anyway. We are out there to have fun, not compete for a purse. If one of us hits it OB in a match, many times we just tell them to drop as if it's lateral. A lost ball that should OBVIOUSLY be easy to find because we all saw it land, just drop one close to where it should be and let's move on. Its too slow if you follow all these rules and you are playing with folks who aren't PGA players. Everyone forgets, PGA players are playing 1,2, or 3 shots into par 3's 4's and 5's. Amatures are taking 2 to 3 times as many to get to the same place. That takes TIME, and its why the whole course grinds to a stop. Taking 8 shots and THEN following rules is just slow.

    A fun thing to do for amateur golfers if they play alone and if the course is not so crowded is to play a solo scramble round. Hit 2 drives, 2 seconds shots... and see what score you can post. This takes some pressure off of the 1st and gives you a good look so you can adjust the 2nd shot (such as for putts).

    I hate that rule when you spray one off the tee box. Just go to where your ball was lost, drop another one in that area and you are now hitting three.
    Going back to the tee? Are you kidding me? Slow play on courses is bad enough as it is. Gotta keep a round to four hours and under.

    • @ronmckinlay28
      @ronmckinlay28 8 років тому

      +Blake Rostalski plus a stroke for distance (not going back to where you played your last stroke) you're now hitting 4 .
      The rule states you must go back, therefore a stroke for distance applies plus one for the lost ball.

    If I understand this correctly one can secure relief within two club lengths or (as one of the two other alternatives) walk back as far as you like eg. sixty club lengths. If this is indeed the case it serves as a clear example as to how ridiculous most golf rules are. What if the golfer declares that he is opting to walk back to a comfortable spot and then drops the ball circa three clubs lengths back? A large part of the over-weighty rule book etc. could be discarded by one simple principle: Play the ball as it lies or in very case play stroke and distance. Apologies if I had misunderstood Jeremy's explanation.

    • @GolfMonthly
      @GolfMonthly  9 років тому +1

      Correct Ivan, taking relief in line with the flag means you can go back one club length or 50! Always a good one to know if you find yourself in the middle of a bush or cluster of trees as you can go far enough back to hit over them.

    • @Jonsse
      @Jonsse 9 років тому +3

      Important to note that you do get a penalty stroke if you take an unplayable. It is sometimes more prudent to go back 20-30 meters than try to hit a ball from tall heavy grass. Amateurs don't often go backwards on unplayable partly because they don't know they can or because it feels counterproductive to go back away from the hole.

    • @Jonsse
      @Jonsse 9 років тому

      ***** You don't get it for free. It's an unplayable, one penalty. But you might be in grass so thick or in a bush so that dropping 2 club lenghts to the side won't give you a proper lie. You can always go backwards as much as you need to get a better lie and a better chance at hitting the green for example.

    Hello Golf Monthly,
    I have played golf for more than 25 years, and I have just watched this video. I had to write some comments to this video. I do not know the guy who made the video but it seemed like he knows what he was talking about. However, unfortunately I am not a big fan of the video.
    He is trying to explain some very basic rules but leaves out some very important things and I am left with a feeling that this official video from Golf Monthly was not done properly.
    I think it is a big responsibility to take on, teaching people the rules of golf and I think it should be done 100% when attempted.
    Please let me know if you need some assistance on making the next video explaining the rules. I would love to help.
    QUESTION : The guy on the video did not mark where his ball was on the path, and he didn't mark the nearest point of relief either. He did not mark out one club length from the nearest point of relief and he didn't mark out one further club length where the ball is allowed to role. Are you not supposed to do that when following the rules of golf?
    QUESTION : When he dropped it in the rough, he was first stepping on the tall grass and thereby improving his lie where he was dropping. Is this allowed?
    QUESTION : When hitting your provisional ball off the tee, shouldn't you also identify your ball. For example say, "provisional Titleist 3 with a black dot" ?
    Kind regards
    Jacob Aaholm
    London

    • @jonc3295
      @jonc3295 7 років тому

      No you do not have to mark those things. As long as you are dropping your ball within the correct area, just do it. There is no requirement in the Rules to physically mark it all out with multiple tees.
      If he was stamping the grass down before dropping, there would be a problem, but you have to walk in there to it to find it.
      The Rules only require you to say 'Provisional'. There is no penalty for not describing the ball further.
      The guy mostly knew what he as talking about, but made a error at 2:18 when he said his ball could roll a further two club lengths outside the extent of his original two club lengths. That is not the case. It can roll a further two club lengths, no nearer the hole, than the place it strikes the ground when dropped.

    I like your point about the provisional in the beginning, but it highlights one of the problems with some rules regarding lost balls. When I'm playing poorly on a hole I can easily lose a ball on, I generally hit one provisional, but if it's in doubt I'm done at that point. At $4.00+ per tour ball, I'm only willing to tolerate so much. When I do knowingly violate a rule like this, then the whole round is invalid if I score it invalid and the card gets tossed in the trash--just a practice session.
    I can't remember the last time I saw a touring pro have to take a lost ball penalty. I've probably seen it twice in my life. One of the reasons I play the game is to see how I compare to the greatest of players. If tour players had to play under the exact same conditions of the Average Joe I am convinced it would impact their scoring. I'm not going crazy here and suggesting that there is little difference between their skills and mine, but simply that it would be a factor. I would have far less penalty strokes over the course of my playing years if I had spotters and a gallery to assist me.
    To add insult to injury, when I discover that I cannot find a ball I had every reason to believe was playable, I turn around and there's a foursome waiting impatiently on the tee. I have on an occasion of a meaningful round driven back to the tee on a cart, but I usually walk and I can think of few things that would be more perturbing to the group behind you than walking back to re-tee it. One avid golfer I know says he drops back a few steps, takes his penalty stroke and plays the hole and scores it as such, arguing that, under the circumstances of course play, that IS as close to the original shot as he can play it. That's not the intention of the rule, obviously.
    Just an example of a rule I think it unfair and unreasonable, given it disproportionately punishes the amateur, recreational player for the reasons I've outlined above. Personally, I think lost ball should be stroke or distance...but not both. I just think that would be more reasonable. This is one of the reasons I haven't been a USGA member since 2013. Sadly, "for the good of the game" is much more of a BS marketing slogan than a description of what the USGA actually does for the average player, IMO. If you want to slow the decline of the game, or even maybe grow it again, you need reasonable and relatively simple to understand rules, not completely different courses of action for almost identical scenarios. I really believe more golfers would adhere to the rules if they were more simple, but maybe I'm wrong on that.

    • @EstrayOne
      @EstrayOne 8 років тому

      With all the spectators they'll almost always find the ball. Also the holes are riddled with ball spotters and rules officials so I can definitely see what you mean.

    • @betavulgaris7888
      @betavulgaris7888 8 років тому +2

      +Srixon Driver Great points. I've, at times, genuinely believed little course trolls are running out of bushes and robbing my balls. I've lost over 2 dozen golf balls in the time i've been playing (2 months) and i've only ever hit 2 balls OOB. Sometimes you just can't find them in the rough. Sometimes you hit them into relatively shallow rough and just cannot find it.
      Pros don't have this trouble because of the marshalls, cameras, spectators, caddy helping them. Maybe i would have more success finding it if i didn't play alone, but if i do lose it in a place where it should have been easy to find, and believe it would have been playable i just drop another ball and continue as if it were my original, without penalty. If i were playing with others i would take a shot for it but on my own i'm definitely not taking a penalty for a ball that would be easy to find with people/cameras/caddy/playing partners helping me.

    The rules need to be simplified. Make everything a red hazard. You lose a ball or it goes into the water. One penalty stroke and you take a drop. The worst is when the golf course changes the hazards. My home club likes to change red hazards to yellow. Instead of dropping you get to go back to the tee and hit another. Making slow play even worse.

    what happens if the path is between two knee deep long areas of grass? do I have to still choose the nearest point of relief in the thick stuff? My ball also rolled like 70 yards Down the path to that point is there any rule that helps in this situation as i dropped into an unplayable position and had to hack out, resulting in a round collapse. :-(

    • @GolfMonthly
      @GolfMonthly  8 років тому +1

      Unfortunately nearest point of relief doesn't mean nicest point of relief! So your choice would be to play off the path as it lies, or drop in the knee deep areas. Your ball has to stop within 2 club lengths when you drop it, so if it rolls down the path outside of 2 club lengths you get to drop again, if it rolls away again you can place it.

    • @HylomantisLemur

      The provisional ball is abandoned and the same rule applies as per a regular unplayable ball (with the options in the video). You found your ball in bounds, the provisional doesn't count. Should you find your ball out of bounds or you're unable to find it, you play your provisional ball.

    • @golfdoc1950
      @golfdoc1950 9 років тому +1

      I understand that's what the tour states. But if the original ball happens to be unplayable, one of the options is to go back to the place where the shot was struck. Wouldn't it make sense to be able to use the provisional instead of walking back and playing another stroke?

      HylomantisLemur if you choose to take the penalty and return to play the shot again, you cannot take the provisional instead because you would then be choosing between two known results. That would lead to some players playing a provisional on almost every shot just in case they might not like their lie (for example, if the ball is in a pot bunker or up against an obstacle with no clear route around). There would quickly be too many strategic provisionals being played which would slow the game down.

The requirement on the tour that you sign a correct scorecard at the end of the round is probably the worst and most outdated rule in all of sports - literally every shot you take is being recorded on camera and there is no possible way to cheat. Also, you should get free relief in fairways from divots.
