Something I liked about the way the Spartan program was made was that, though it doesn't show up in the game, a enormous amount of work went to justifying and explaining why there would be the sort of decades-long super soldier program in place in the first place for a catastrophic war. It deals with the fact that any government that decides it needs super soldiers is not one to be trusted, and that a process of making super soldiers would by necessity involve first turning a lot of the best and brightest of humanity into corpses.

    • @117Industries
      @117Industries 2 роки тому

If these best and brightest were willing participants, or were reconciled to the cause without force or extreme coercion, does your opinion change?
I don’t think that the “evil” of top-down decision-making outside the public purview is as cut-and-dry as we like to believe from our narrow and non-holistic purview of the scheme of things. We have a necessarily infantile relationship with society, since our responsibility is meagre and our stake in its direction so small. The evaluations of decisions would change with an increased burden of responsibility and the necessary increase in stakes, no?
Easy for us to judge, whose decisions affect, at most, only the direction of ourselves and kin, what should or should not be done for the species. Who are we to judge what is necessary given the mantle of this particular kind of responsibility, we whose weight of decision amounts to variety of foodstuff to purchase, where to sleep, whom to fuck, or where our children should be educated. Miles in moccasins comes to mind.

I always found that the spartan project is similar to Starship trooper' society: both are terrible but you can justify them by saying "it's necessary to save humanity against an alien invasion".
    Except that's not their origin.
Society in starship troopers became an authoritarian military state waaaay before the war with the Arachnid began.
The spartan project started with terrible human experiments on kidnapped children because the military government wanted to suppress human rebels.
It's a shame that the halo series rarely mention the fact that Master Chief is basically a child soldier.

The franchise is granted to everyone who has a career field which is useful to society, which includes cops, firefighters, and teachers. The idea of limiting the franchise to people who have skin in the game is a feature of Republics, not Fascism.
It's also important to point out that non-citizens in the ST universe have every right we in the Western world would recognize except the franchise. This includes, among other things, the right to openly and freely suggest that the government is equivalent to used toilet paper, which is hardly something that Fascist givernments would tolerate.
It always amuses me that Heinlein gets shit on for having pro-military viewpoints while Asimov is never criticized for his positive portrayal of authoritarian governments and denigration of free will in the Foundation series.

Depends on how you define "close". If we're talking equals? No. The II's where chosen from the absolute peak of human genetic perfection and trained from an extremely early age to be the ultimate warriors. III's would be near that but since they were genetically inferior, trained in larger numbers so they less individual attention, and given inferior armor most of the time they would fall a bit short. Though given similar weapons i'd say the difference would only be around 3-5%. On a good day one of the best III's could probably take a II in a fight if they had similar equipment. But only on a good day.
IV's are adults when augmented and given Spartan training. A lot of their world view and tactics are set before they even get considered for the program. I'd guess a IV would be somewhere around 10-15% less effective than a II, which is quite a gap in capabilities.Even with similar equipment I don't see a IV ever being a match for a II even on a good day. Even a group of IV's would struggle with an average II all things being equal. Though it is within the realm of possibility for the program to hit the jackpot and augment a specimen that approaches the genetic superiority of a II or III. Such a outcome would be extremely unlikely and probably only narrow the gap to around 7% or so due to the age they began training.
TL/DR: III's would be close to II's but still inferior. IV's would be inferior to both and not even close to II's.

Their teamwork chemistry, their depth perception, they're like acrobatic, lightning fast tanks in the form of a man or woman. Brilliant, genius soldiers. He was one of the first spartans, gen 2. The gen 1 program never got off the ground. He and the others were kidnapped at the age of 6 and indoctrinated to fight the insurrection. He operated as leader of the Spartans until Reach when most of gen 2 and gen 3 spartans died. The only living gen 2s today are Red team (Halo Wars), Gray team (The Cole Protocol), and Blue team (chief's personal squad featured in many novels and also Halo 5). I believe Blue team is part of Spartan ops. Gray and Red are traditional military.

There is quite a bit of lore to all of this. if you want a fuller experience I recommend reading The Fall of Reach, by Eric Nylund.
The Chief is a part of the Spartan II program. in 2517, 75 6 year old children were abducted and went through a grueling, specially made training program to create the ultimate super soldiers. these children had been genetically screened for the best humanity had to offer. they were smarter, stronger, faster, had better senses, and the list goes on, than the average humans. they are described in the books at some points as 1 in billions. (I did some math on that, and this must be exaggerated, but the point stands. extreme outliers.) the best of the best.
at the age of 14, these 75 children underwent extreme physical augmentations. increased bone density, enhanced strength, and a whole slew of modifications to improve their physiology. they even performed brain surgery to improve vision, and I think some other modifications to their brains as well.
These augmentations were so extreme that roughly half the candidates died during the augmentation process. a few survived, but washed out of the program. the 32 or so that survived the ordeal and became full fledged Spartans became the ultimate super soldier. super fast, strong, and their reflexes were enhanced to an extreme degree, amongst other feats. They were given MJOLNIR armor, a powered armor suit specifically designed for the Spartans. the armor enhances their already incredible abilities, and gives excellent protection.
Over the course of the war, most Spartans died fighting the Covenant. The Chief is one of the few survivors of this generation of Spartans. He was the leader of the Spartans, and considered the best overall. not to say that he was much better than the other Spartans, but he was the best leader amongst them, and the most well rounded.
The feats of the Spartan IIs are astonishing. suffice it to say they've made a massive contribution to the war effort for humanity.
There is also the Spartan III class, but I'll skip that.
Now, the Spartan IVs are the ones talked about in this video. Adults chosen from the various branches of the UNSC military. Their modifications and training were far less severe than that of the Spartan II and III class. They are, in comparison to the II class, lesser soldiers. Super soldiers, but not the ultimate super soldiers like the IIs were.
The Spartan II program could never be big. there are far too few viable candidates, and the resource cost and ethical implications especially are too steep a price. The creation of the II class was incredibly inethical. the IV class is a far more standardised and humanized approach to super soldier creation.
hope this was what you were looking for.

Unknown. The augmentation process for the S-II's and S-III's kills their sex drives, although they were probably sterilised anyway. The augmentation process for the S-IV's is more advanced and less extreme, plus sterilisation would be difficult to justify in a public program with volunteers.
So the Master Chief is incapable of sexual desire or procreation at all, but a Spartan IV might be.

"But perhaps most importantly, it has given to the Spartans of the UNSC today a formal legitimacy, so that they no longer need to sever themselves from their humanity in order to preserve it."
This, to me, underlines the true tragedy of the Spartan-II's.
I have to wonder if any of the remaining Spartan II's would know what to do in a galaxy without war, or if the only happiness they could find would be in the undertaking of dangerous missions and operations in service to the UNSC.
I love the S-II's. They will always be the superior soldiers.
But I think the truth of the matter is that they lost their 'humanity' long, long ago.

  • @Kareszkoma
    @Kareszkoma 2 роки тому

The Spartan-II and Spartan-III changed the course of the war, something the Spartan-IV is incapable of. While the S-II and S-III were very limited in numbers, their effectiveness were overwhelmingly large. The S-IV is greatly effective, but that is compared to a foot soldier or an elite trooper. The S-IV program is pretty much upgraded normies to resemble the Spartans, while S-II and S-III were truly Spartans.
The mass-production of Spartans gave higher numbers, but the loss in efficiency is a clear cut. Instead of operatives and soldiers capable of surviving dozens of battles, achieving impossible feats or winning even against the most dire of odds, the Spartans have been washed down to shock troopers. Which also means that certain mission that have been unlocked, become possible due to that high mission efficiency, a mission which could turn the tide, are now lost.
In case of a campaign and the deployment of a Spartan-IV fireteam, it is reasonable to expect for 1 or 2 members to fall. While previously, a Spartan was deployed because the campaign was needed to be won for sure. Something still unsure when a S-IV is deployed.

I'm still not clear what sets Spartans apart from any other Special Forces. Wouldn't it make more sense just to incorporate the Spartans into the UNSC Marines Service branch?
The Spartans focus on small unit tactics, infiltration and stealth. This is exactly what ODSTs in the Marines did.
Like what do the Marines do now that Spartans have been scaled to mass deployment? The UNSC Navy should have Power-Projection, Void-Supremacy and Military Intelligence covered. The UNSC Army should have Conventional Warfare and Planetary Defense covered. The Spartans would be preferable to the Marines for both Counter-Insurgency and Deniable-Ops missions.
I get that Spartans are the protagonists of the Halo Universe, but you don't have to keep building up their importance in the world. They were already cool as future super soldiers, who took on the most dangerous missions in support of a larger army.
