  • Mark Riedemann interviews Ms. Dina Raouf Khalil, Deputy Director for External Relations, Egypt, about the situation of the Catholic Church and her help to overcome illiteracy among the poorest.
A 2015 UNICEF report noted that 10 million children in Egypt have been declared to be “multi-dimensionally poor”. These dimensions include “being stunted, dropping out from school, not having clean drinking water and lacking access to health care.” The figures are particularly acute for Upper Egypt where 80 per cent of those living in severe poverty are located.
According to this same study, women are more likely to be poorer than men and where female illiteracy rates are at 34% - twice as high as those for men.
In many respects, the Catholic Church has been at the forefront of this awareness. As early as the 1940's the Jesuit Fathers understood that the key to development was education - and they began building schools. Today these simple steps have developed into an association of 35 schools and 63 community development centers called the Association of Upper Egypt for Education and Development providing schooling to over 12.700 students.
