- Im Zoo Krefeld sind zwei Schneeleoparden geboren. Die Babys kamen in der Nacht zum 11. Juli in der Wurfbox hinter den Kulissen der Anlage zur Welt. Bei der Geburt sind die jungen Katzen noch blind, ihre Augen öffnen sich erst nach 9 bis 12 Tagen. Ihre ersten Wurmkuren haben sie schon hinter sich, bald folgt die Impfung gegen Katzenschnupfen, der den Jungtieren gefährlich werden kann. Sehr wahrscheinlich sind es zwei weibliche Tiere. Ihr aktuelles Gewicht liegt bei 3,6 Kilogramm bzw. 3,7 Kilogramm.
Für das Zuchtpaar Patan und Dari ist es der vierte gemeinsame Wurf. Insgesamt haben sie nun acht Jungtiere. Sie setzen eine lange Reihe an erfolgreichen Zuchten der hochbedrohten Gebirgsbewohner fort. 1966 kamen erstmals im Zoo Krefeld Schneeleoparden zur Welt. Damals war das eine Sensation, da in Europa sonst nur Helsinki Zuchterfolge hatte. Kater Patan stammt in direkter Folge von Nuschka, der Stammmutter von 1966 ab. Er ist die sechste Generation. Traditionell bleibt immer ein Kater in Krefeld, der dann seinen Vater ablöst. Vielleicht wird dieses Mal eine Katze die Tradition fortsetzen.
Schneeleoparden sind hochbedroht. Sie leben in den Hochgebirgen Zentralasiens. Ihr Lebensraum umfasst zwölf Länder, was den gemeinschaftlichen Schutz durch unterschiedliche Gesetzgebung enorm erschwert. Genaue Zahlen sind nicht bekannt, aber schätzungsweise leben nur noch maximal 6.390 Tiere in der Wildnis. Ihre Hauptbedrohung ist illegale Bejagung.

Don't say that to a Snow leopard fan, because biologists debate if they are in the family of pantera (cats) or have their own family (uncia). So if you ask a fan of course they like to be a little arrogant and say "they of course are not cats, but their own kind" :D
These cats are lovely I am glad there are programs and zoos. I will never ever want a fur made of an endangered species. I don t ever want a fur coat.
