The best “horror” episodes of TNG. The music, everything is perfect. The scene with Crusher in the morgue when all the bodies sit up scared me pretty good when I watched this when it aired when I was 9 or something.
Shit, seeing him have such an intense breakdown is pretty scary tbh...like, something that can break such a brave dude That Much so quickly is terrifying.
I think he's been feeling afraid for a while and was incredibly ashamed about it - we saw him coming late to senior staff meetings and being aggravated at nothing for a third of the episode. It's not a coincidence that he left as soon as the final attempt as he saw it failed. He'd set that ritual up before coming on shift and had said to himself that if it fails he'll do the most honourable thing and kill himself, it's how people with severe enough anxiety and depression act, it's understated, not out there for the world to see and it's there the moment he loses that last shred of hope so he rushes off to deal with his problem in the wrong way.
Didn't Worf himself say only fools have no fear? He would also later say "there is no greater enemy than one's own fears and it took a brave man to face them"
That’s true about Worf. However, in this episode the fear was an intensely paranoid and almost supernatural type of fear. It was a fear driving the crew to madness beyond their control.
Having a friend help take you to the hospital must be a comfort, I poisoned myself in highschool and nobody went with me, I was just scolded by a paramedic the whole ride. Would not recommend.
People these days are such a-holes. No respect, no compassion, no mercy, or even courtesy or common sense. I am sorry that nobody was there for you when you needed it the most. My best wishes and my hopes go with you.
The TNG writers described this episode as a “slow” episode, but I found it unsettling. You witness the crew suffer mental breakdowns from the lack of sleep. As someone who has struggled with insomnia, I can empathize with Worf here.
@@khfan4life365 To be honest, I kind of know how you feel. A few years back, I stayed in an EMU (epilepsy monitoring unit) to see where my seizures are coming from. To purposely trigger a seizure they completely took me of my meds and kept me awake for a whole week. But I mostly just got irritable, and I only had one seizure the whole time! But on the upside, they did find out where the seizures are coming from
Did I miss something, or did it take security about a minute and a half to get to Worf's quarters after Troi called them? I know the ship is big, but whoa...
In all fairness you can imagine half the crew was having incidents similar to what Worf was going through. They probably had their hands full dealing with it all. Priority should have been given to the senior staff though.
It is to their credit that they made Worf into a complicated character, not just a mindless samurai but someone with fears, love, compassion etc.

Exactly. This was a “scary” episode and having Worf of all people break down like that really makes the audience go “holy shit! This is serious!” 🍻🖖🏼
@@nickcolbert9615 The mind is a fragile thing. Simply staying awake too long can have really nastly consequences
A bit disconcerting that Worf has all the ceremonial shit all laid out and ready to go in case he decides to kill himself.
That’s exactly what I was thinking
I was guessing those things were not just used for suicide but also other rituals and stuff that's why they were laying there

One of the rare times to see worf afraid
Didn't Worf himself say only fools have no fear? He would also later say "there is no greater enemy than one's own fears and it took a brave man to face them"
Maybe it's that it's fear that he couldn't control?

So let me get this straight.
You’re using quotes from *later* to use in this scene?
@@av799 to be fair, timeline issues are very much a thing in Star Trek.
He feels fear that is overwhelming him. There is a marked difference between being afraid, and being paralyzed with fear.

Hope u are ok...
F'n paramedic...
Seriously? That paramedic was an asshole.
Poisoning sucks. I accidentally overdosed, definitely worse way to go. Hope you're doing okay.

You start speaking Klingon when you're tired?

I was watching this scene with my Mom, and when Troi was talking Warf out of it, the wind SLAMED a door shut, scared the crap out of us.

They’re all severely sleep deprived to be fair.

Does anyone know what Worf actually says in Klingon when he's preparing the blade?
