YTVs iconic start up theme absolutely brilliant

Quite a few strikes took place over 1979 or so that impacted telly and radio!
One affecting the BBC saw some programmes either not broadcast or replaced by something else - I remember Tomorrow’s World not being broadcast (can’t remember what replaced it) and that week’s edition of Top Of The Pops, which followed it, was replaced by an edition from a year previously (this was in 1978 and a David Hamilton-fronted edition from 1977 went out in its place!).
Another strike affected both telly and radio, with no programmes at all on either BBC 1 or BBC 2 - just apology captions over a still picture of a Christmas tree, with baubles and tinsel (this was around Christmas time) - meanwhile, radio put out an all-network service, which seemed weird at the time - pop music on Radios 2, 3 and 4, music of any kind on Radio 4, other than programme themes and panel games featuring music, speech programmes on anything other than Radio 4, classical music on Radio 1, that sort of thing!
There was a strike at Tyne Tees that saw no locally sourced material - network programmes went out, but adverts were replaced by a silent apology caption - any programmes broadcast after News At Ten that were exclusive to Tyne Tees didn’t go out and were replaced by the apology caption - imports, films, off-network repeats and so on - even Northern Life, the local news programme (although they still got the soaps!).
There was a similar strike at Yorkshire Television over Christmas that prevented the Christmas edition of 3-2-1 from going out - it was replaced by Carry On Follow That Camel - 3-2-1 eventually found itself airing in the summer - all that Christmas themed stuff going out in the summer - could not be helped!

The BBC strike in December 1978 was the one you are thinking of. During November 1978 the unions did "wildcat" strikes all leading up to their pre Christmas strike. They knew if they saved the full industrial action to before Christmas, they could ruin BBC Christmas schedules. On 20th December 1978 the unions struck their first hammer blow by knocking BBC One and BBC Two off air. After two days off air, management were desperate to keep their Christmas schedules, with Bill Cotton putting together an emergency schedule for BBC One and BBC Two if necessary. However management agreed to talk with the unions, and they went to ACAS to discuss terms. However to make sure the BBC did not have it easy, the unions called out radio staff at 4.00pm on Friday 22nd December - forcing BBC Radio to merge Radios 1, 2, 3 and 4 into a one all network radio station. BBC Radio had to stay on air, and unions allowed a management run schedule, just in case of an extreme emergency event. At 9.00pm the unions and BBC agreed a pay deal, with the BBC claiming Christmas on the BBC saved. BBC One returned at 3.00pm on Saturday 23rd, with BBC Two back earlier at 1.30pm. BBC All Network Radio continued until 2.05am, with the four main stations resuming in the morning.

I don’t recall that particular Tyne Tees strike - I remember TTT being blacked out altogether one day in August 1985, and no adverts inserted into Channel Four in the region that day. TTT relied on the Thames feed for some of their imported soaps like The Sullivans and Sons and Daughters, and were often forced to replace these due to disputes at Thames, as well as all of Thames’s own networked material. Interesting days.

Today Thursday 24th October 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the return of ITV after the strike - what a day that was in 1979, for millions of viewers who were sick to the back teeth of the dismal offerings on BBC One and BBC Two, especially their daytime schedules (or lack of).

@KStarCLG While here in the States during the strike, cable TV was slowly but surely penetrating millions of homes; ESPN had just debuted and there was already HBO, Showtime, TBS, and the channel that would evolve into Freeform, with much more to come (CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, etc.) as the ‘70s became the ‘80s.

The ITV companies exclusively funded it at the time, if it made any losses, the ITV companies subsidised it and if it made an operating profit, the ITV companies took the profit.

And then came the 1979 strike which for 11 weeks blacked out the entire ITV network apart from the channel islands regions. Yorkshire viewers thought they had a crap Christmas of 78, now their summer of 79 was just as bad, even worse. Lucky viewers who could pick up neighbouring regions with spill over signal in December 1978 were lucky, able to enjoy ITV through Christmas 78, even though the picture could be snowy or hazy.

Thames were providing the schedule, as the other ITV companies were not ready to fulfil full scheduling on their own. Thames provided the basic return schedule for the first day including networked continuity, so each region decided whether they would do continuity or simply hand it over to Thames.

@@khangphamchannel016 They had to do this for a few days till the ITV companies were fully ready to opt out of the nationally run service and start to run their own schedules i.e having enough techhies in to run the telecine / videotape machines, operate lighting sound vision mixing and cameras for live and recorded studio programmes, bring in the feeds from the regions and national ITN news from London, open up the regions and closedown the itv regions every night etc.

I believe the alternatives were as you say Tyne Tees, but if you lived further to the west of Yorkshire it was Granada and if you lived in south Yorkshire it was ATV in the midlands.

Poor Yorkshire Television viewers, 1978-1979 was not a nice year for them. In December 1978, the unions at Yorkshire walked out on 17th December 1978 forcing the region off air for all of Christmas 1978, not returning until Wednesday 3rd January 1979. From 20th to 22nd December 1978, when BBC 1 and BBC 2 were off air due to strike action, the Yorkshire region had no television at all!

@@KevinM913 ATV seemed little prepared for the resumption of programmes. I could get both ATV & HTV Wales at the time and although ATV stayed with the iBA caption for most of the day, HTV Wales broke away from it early in the day with rundown slides and a play out of there interval library music. As you say, ATV went straight into the "Welcome Home" while HTV Wales opened up with the usual start up followed by in vision continuity from Arfon Haines Davies, apologising to viewers and advertisers for the loss of service, explaining that regional news programmes would be back the following evening and also arrangements for schools tv for the rest of the term.

Yorkshire didn't have a great 1978/79. They were forced off air all during Christmas 1978 due to their own strike, leaving ITV Christmas shows to be aired in Yorkshire from Jan 2nd 1979. And then came the whopping 1979 strike.

This can not be right. I thought all I.T.V. Stationd had The Welcome Home to I.T.V. Caption with The Mike Sam singers and then a National Network schedule except for Channel Television. Who carried on broadcasting to aviod bunkrupttcy. Any ideas?

garry simpson On the first day back I believe some regions did their own start up routine before joining the national networked service. I’ve seen a HTV start up where the announcer explains that they will be showing a nationally networked service. Therefore, it would seem that the national service was networked via each of the regional companies rather than directly from Thames to the transmitter.

It depends if anyone had a VCR to tape it back then. Even though every region had a start up, they all simply took the emergency network schedule from Thames in London on this date. No programme or presentation difference really.

UTV did a start-up on the Friday, and local news returned that day, but I don't know if they still stuck with the network presentation - though I do have visions of seeing the LWT clock on at least one occasion.
I think all was mostly back to normal from the following Monday.

The only reason we as a nation don't strike as much anymore is because of all the hoops and hurdles to organize strike action making it a logistical and legal nightmare. The issues that afflicted British workers in the 70s also affect us now, if not moreso!

6:05 PM: The Muppets (With Dudley Moore) (ATV) (While The episode has some clips on UA-cam (search The Muppet Show with Dudley Moore in the UA-cam search), the episode appears to be on another video site with Less Harsh Copywrite rules (Dailymotion, www.dailymotion.com/video/x7s8no3 ) . However, this episode has been at least partially released on DVD/Video entitled "Best of The Muppet Show" It was reported (according to sources) that Channel and Westward DID NOT air the Muppet Show to air local news/Programming. A Statler and Waldorf joke in the intro relating to the place having Bugs, which could count as a reference to the ITV Strike.. Although Muppet Wikia says the production of the episode occurred in June, Two months Pre-Strike, So that might just be coincidental that the Joke in Question aired on the same night the ITV Strike Ended... On that Note, I will leave you to decide whether the Bugs in the theater joke was just a coincidence or not. They also got the UK air date wrong (October 29th, compared to the actual airdate of October 24th.)

on the ITV archival thing, It's worth noting that the state of the archives from 1955 to 2002 depends on the franchisee. Fortunately for Coronation Street, Granada, The people behind Coronation Street, have kept a large archive, which includes every episode of the show. Granada's Archives are now hosted in Leeds, the location of Yorkshire Television, who themselves have a Large Library. Thames also has known to have a large archive, and have uploaded some of their archive to their own UA-cam Channel)

Not as good as the Candle Gags in the BBC 2 Postponed Opening Night, but still, A funny way to remind about the previous Two and 1/2 Months, Well, at least I find it to be funny.)

Closedown was between 12 AM and 1 AM.
The National service would go on until the start of the Next Week, with some regions re-starting their local newscasts/magazines before the week ended, while others had to wait until the next week. At the same time, However, it is worth noting that with very little new programming coming in, it was reported that Some shows like Repeats of 3-2-1 were shoveled around to fill holes in the National Schedule along with what was able to be produced. Jokes aside, ITV really had trouble Catching up with the BBC for the rest of 1979 ratings-wise, and ITV didn't get back to true Normalcy in that department until early 1980.
It would be the last MAJOR work Stoppage in British TV, due to events that happened politically during the Strike, I.E. The election of Margaret Thatcher, who would go on and weaken the powers of the unions and the relations between the broadcasters and the Thatcher Government that would ensure during the 1980s (and in the John Major Government in the early 1990s that followed) But THAT whole ordeal is a story for another place and time...

This was not down to Mrs Thatcher per se.
The unions demanded a massive pay rise because over the last few years prior the profits of ITV were at huge levels.
The rise offered was below that of inflation at the time,hence mix the two together were ripe ingredients for this strike.
And in the end ITV backed down and the technicians got what they wanted.

Na época a Inglaterra estava em uma crise muito forte, com uma inflação muito alta e as redes de tv regionais da ITV estavam fazendo muito, mas muito dinheiro. O Sindicato recusou um aumento salarial proposto pela ITV e todos os funcionários (tirando da Channel Television das Ilhas do Canal da Mancha) entraram em greve por 11 semanas.
Essa crise que eu mencionei antes foi uma das coisas que ajudaram a eleger a Margaret Thatcher

Isso aconteceu devido a uma disputa a respeito dos pagamentos dos engenheiros elétricos na Thames Television, segundo eles o valor oferecido era muito baixo em relação ao custo de vida (vale lembrar que nessa época o Reino Unido passava por um período de inflação alta), então pediram a outros técnicos que assumissem as funções mas eles se recusaram alegando que mexer nesses equipamentos era considerado arriscado e que podia causar acidentes, a Thames então obrigou a fazê-lo ou ninguém teria dinheiro, então em solidariedade aos trabalhadores da emissora diária de Londres os trabalhadores das outras 13 empresas entraram em paralização nacional e quase toda a ITV saiu do ar, exibindo uma tela azul pedindo desculpas por não estarem exibindo nada
A Channel Television (franqueada das ilhas do canal da mancha) ficou de fora da paralização, os técnicos entenderam que se ela parar acabaria quebrando financeiramente (ela é uma das menores estações do canal 3, qualquer coisa que deixe ela fora do ar causa muito prejuízo a empresa), no entanto ela teve que se virar como podia, importando filmes em rolos (sim, ela ainda não tinha videotape nessa época) e preenchendo os espaços que deveriam estar exibindo os noticiários da ITN (sim, ela também foi afetada pela greve) com o seu noticiário "Channel Report".
No entanto tivemos algumas coisas exibidas durante a greve, nessa época a região de Yorkshire era aterrorizada pelo estripador de Yorkshire e a polícia da região queria localizá-lo, então na referida região os técnicos colocaram um aviso dizendo que a polícia de West Yorkshire estão a procura dele e que se vissem ele que ligassem para lá, outra coisa que era exibida no serviço nacional que não a programação normal era os "anúncios de engenharia da IBA" , que informavam sobre as novas torres de transmissão e outras coisas
A greve terminou com a vitória dos sindicatos e muitos aumentos salariais, porém meses depois Margaret Thatcher foi eleita primeira-ministra do Reino Unido e com ela o poder dos sindicatos diminuiu e muito e greves como essa na tv britânica deixaram de acontecer, porém por ironia do destino a própria ITV também virou vítima do thatcherismo e foi reformada sob o neoliberalismo em 1991, causando sequelas que duram até hoje
