  • 1964 VFW Nationals were held in Cleveland, Ohio on August 26th.
For those that marched in the preliminaries, this video is dedicated to you. A total of 45 Corps entered the competition and only 12 made the finals. We all gave everything we had to make our Corps the best it could be, but in the end, only one would walk away with the title - The Kilties. I am honored that I was able to both march in and watch the Nationals that day fifty years ago.
Only about a quarter of the Corps that entered are on this video - I wish there was more footage, but that is not the case. Please let me know if you know the name of the Corps that are not tagged. The music is by the Kilties, Royal Airs and Cavaliers - all recording are from 1964 and I believe were posted by Charles Frost. Film was taken by Gary Stubbs, traveling with the Seattle Thunderbirds, in a 8mm format.

The sound track of the Royal-Airs is an amazing piece of drum corps history, their “warm up” year for one of the greatest shows in history in 1965.

What a great video. Our corps wasn't at the level of the corps on this video but we did however march, and took first place in the parade that kicked of the weekend. So many fond memories of that great weekend. Thanks for posting. Michael Barker, Drum Major, Townsmen, Buffalo, NY.

My brother and I played with the Kenosha, WI Kingsmen for many years. The Kingsmen had many players from many corps. Royal Airs, Mariners and Chicago Vanguard were my favorite junior corps. 2 of my best pals came from RA and 2 from the Mariners that played with the Kingsmen
    The 60's were great !

I had the pleasure of being there with our Corps. (Royal Lancers - Wyandotte, MI) I can almost remember the day as being yesterday. It was hot. We didn't place all that well but hey, being on the stage with the BIG BOYS was worth it to me. One of my Drum Corps experiences I'll never forget. I'd have to admit my favorites at the time were the Troopers and the Royal Airs. The years I marched (63-67) was a time in my life that I'll never forget.

Excellent video of the Midwest corps at the 1964 VFW Nat'l's. I marched in New Jersey corps, we competed against Kilties, Cavaliers and Vanguard at the 1969 VFW Nat'l's in Philadelphia, in the prelims. It was the high point of my life to march on the same field as these all time great corps.

Thank you for the great post really appreciate it. For those of you that are unaware of it Charles Frost has passed away several years ago. He did so much for our great activity making these videos, and recordings available to us to relive our youth. God bless Charles Frost and may He rest in peace.

I believe the third Corps or the Belleville Black Knights, from Chicago? Their uniform was black and white with the left-arm white and the right arm black. The first time I saw the Black Knights compete were at the VFW Nationals in Ebbets Field 1958, they placed sixth. That uniform stuck in my mind forever oh, I just thought it was the greatest uniform. Former member of the Long Island sunrises. 1964 through 1968

Great stuff -- I last marched in 1959. Amazing how far drum corps progressed in 5 years.

In my opinion DC I killed the activity. It was once a great great activity until DCI in 1972, flushed it down the drain.

One of my very favorite years for Drum Corps. Some real solid corps from the East and some from the Mid-West!! And it just so happens to be my first year in the activity. Well, I actually joined in Nov. of '63.

You've got The Saint Kevin Emerald Knights from Dorchester, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA on that video.

Before DCI, when there was practically a Drum and Bugle Corps for almost every city and town across America, where every single young person could join a corps, learn about playing music, being in a color guard, what military precision, marching and maneuvering was all about, and real, honest-to-God pride in a job well done after hours of practice.

My brother and I played with the Kenosha Kingsmen, myself 1964 to 1970, brother 1966 to 1970, Senior corps was much fun, In the Kingsmen we had many members from junior corps, Kilties, Royal Airs, Vanguard and Milwaukee corps. Miss the grand Ole Days of the 60s corps. GO ARMY

The following year 1965 the Chicago royalaires became the national champions, unfortunately I never got to see them in person until they started their alumni corpse. I was very much impressed with them I believe the first time I saw them, was at DCI Nationals, I believe Madison Wisconsin. They were in exhibition.

Ahhh....the memory of the crisp pinutrating staccato of the drum line...the thrill of a movement of a company front of a mass of individual kids moving as one...Frank Minear broadcasting his soul to the crowd...the rumble of the bass drums thundering of the builds of downtown Seattle ...Our Crontra Bass Horns thundering to waking the Homeless a Pike place.... the flicker of the lights of the surreal atmosphere of Seattle Seafair.....the spine tingling experience of being "urched" by a Seafair Pirate She urchin....🤸🤸🤸🤗

Great recording and some great history. One thing though. In 1964 The Vanguard was not from Des Plaines, at that time they were the Skokie Vanguard and in 1964 The Imperials were from Norwood Park; they were not the Skokie Imperials. The Vanguard moved to Des Plaines in 1967 and Norwood Park because The Skokie Imperials later than that.

Thanks for the update and corrections. A few of the Thunderbirds would go back and march with Norwood Park after our shorter season ended. Those were the days.....

Back when we had Real Drum and bugle Corps. They all had different uniforms, different style, each one was unique in its own way. Without even seeing who was on the field most people were able to tell you who they were just from, even made from arrangements, or from the music and how they were playing it. We no longer have real drum and bugle Corps. In my opinion we can thank DCI for the destruction of what was one of the greatest youth activities in North America. They have turned it into a marching band competition today, superimposed on a three ring circus. And half-price 99% of the organization's out of business. Due to the extreme cost to operate an organization and transport them all what was the country. Using so many props, they needed more equipment trucks to transport just like a circus, and all sorts of instruments trombones electric guitars, electric organs, PA systems so you can hear this soloist play, also they would be narrating what was going on. Drum Corps International, needs to change to marching band International. Just call it what it really is today it's not a, drum and bugle Corps. Today is January 28th 2023. I appreciate you posting this click. Brings back great memories, with real drum and bugle Corps.
