Do cheap greenhouses work in the vegetable garden? Do I recommend them, and would I buy them again?

  • Join me today as I walk through and show you the different sized greenhouses that we have in the garden. I talk about the pros and cons of buying a cheap greenhouse and if they truly work or if they are a waste of money.
    We have three different sized greenhouses, and we use them for different things in the garden. They were all purchased at a low budget price, so the question is, do they work, or are they just cheap rubbish?

    The covers only last during One Summer, here in the Southern United States. Invest in Greenhouse Plastic/Poly Film to use over your frame. I have not bought the more exspensive greenhouses, so I can not say they are better.

      Thanks so much for that. 😊 I think you would probably get similar summers to us here. Yes I was thinking of looking for some proper greenhouse plastic to use when this cover is no longer any good. It's very expensive though from what I have heard, but hopefully it will last longer.

    I got hog panels & made a tunnel with shde cloth.😊👍

      That's a great idea. I use them in my garden too but they are pretty expensive here per panel so we need to use them more sparingly. 😊

    I’ve had one like yours for 4 years. Some of the little squares are gone of course and my door zipper broke last year. But I’m still using mine.

    Where I live that greenhouse would be miles downrange during the first wind storm.

    • @12acresfarm
      @12acresfarm  Місяць тому

      Yea it definitely would need a heavy duty anchor system if it were in a high wind area. Thankfully we don't get really high winds where we are. 😊

      Thanks so much. ❤️ I have found them fantastic so far with the pros definitely outweighing the cons. Although they are cheap, they have done a great job, especially for the price. 😀🌱🌻

    I've considered getting a big cheap greenhouse. I've always wanted to make one out of old windows but even they cost!

      I would absolutely love a greenhouse made from old windows! They are so beautiful. They are expensive where we are though, unfortunately. 😬😬

    The wind blew the plastic off of our cheap greenhouse 4 times last year. I finally gave up. No garden this year, sadly.

    • @12acresfarm
      @12acresfarm  29 днів тому

      That's no good. 😔 Sorry to hear that. I have been thinking about putting straps or rope over the top of mine and tying them to a stake in the ground, for a bit of extra security. Maybe you could give that a go?

      @@12acresfarm Try aluminum tent stakes and/or landscape staples to secure the greenhouse to the ground. Despite these precautions, mine still blew over a couple days ago in a "tornado warning" storm. (I live in an area where 20mph winds daily is normal) The plastic connector parts broke. causing the frame to warp, and then the cover blew off. Plants strewn everywhere! Despite this, I will still most likely buy another one because I find them great for curing garlic/onions/potatoes.

    • @12acresfarm
      @12acresfarm  20 днів тому

      That's a great idea. We typically don't get high winds here either, but I think it's always best to have a plan in place in case there is a big storm with high winds. I will definitely look into the landscape staples. 😊

    I am currently trying to fix a cheap one. I decided to try and weld it but I regret that a bit now. Should have use bolts and wood like most people do. I think the price once reinforced will still be worth it. Though I regret not going with a tunnel design as I wanted straighter walls and height but I think the tunnel arches are stronger.

    • @12acresfarm
      @12acresfarm  Місяць тому

      Yes, I think that being welded together would make it stronger too, especially if it has straight walls and not arched ones. I would have liked to have straight walls as you get a bit more height along the sides, but they were quite a bit more expensive here than the arched ones. Well done on fixing it up though. I'm sure it will be worth it when you are finished. 😊

      @@12acresfarm yea it was more expensive and they skimped on ribs. A tunnel at 30 feet would have 5 ribs, 7 if you include end walls. I have 2 ribs, 4 with endwalls. If I were growing on the ground I'd have been fine with an arch but I am moving an aquaponics setup I had in my basement at my prior house so I really needed straight walls.

    • @12acresfarm
      @12acresfarm  Місяць тому

      That's frustrating. I wonder if you can buy replacement ribs? 🤔

    in our green houses in germany, there are many spiders. If thats the case in australia too, i wouldn't walk in there. :D

      @12acresfarm  Місяць тому

      Yes we have lots of spiders here in Australia too, and a lot of them aren't friendly. Lol. But they are out of the greenhouse as well as in the greenhouse. 😅

    I have one 10x20 like that and it was good for the price. Unfortunately I left the plastic on one year too long and all of those tiny squares that make up the plastic began falling into the garden.

    • @12acresfarm
      @12acresfarm  Місяць тому +2

      Thanks for the heads up. 👍😀 I was wondering how long the plastic would last. I'm hoping if I take the plastic off over the summer and only have it on throughout the winter, I might get a bit more use out of it. 🙏🌱🌻

    • @12acresfarm
      @12acresfarm  Місяць тому

      Thankfully we don't get snow here, only a very light frost. But yes, I don't think it would hold up well in snow. 😬😬
