Do you want to learn how to grow your own food and be more self-sufficient? With the craziness of the world lately, I think it is a MUST HAVE skill for everyone to learn, and that is one of the reasons why I started my vegetable garden. Here at 12 Acres Farm, we are on our journey to self-sufficiency, and we wanted to share the knowledge and skills that we learn along the way with you all! We love to grow and preserve as much food as we can and encourage everyone that we meet to do the same. It would be fantastic for you to join us as we get back to basics and live life the simple way. As always, with my videos, I hope I can encourage and inspire you all to get into your gardens, plant some seeds, plant some plants, grow some food, and try and be a bit more self-sufficient. I can't wait to hear about your own gardening journey in the comments!
Garden Update - Pumpkins, garlic, tomatoes and more! | Australian Homestead Garden
Join me in the garden today as we discuss pumpkins, tomatoes, garlic, and grapes! I will be giving an update on my pumpkin pest problem that I shared last week and if the Diatomaceous earth helped or hindered the plant. I also share a new issue that I have with my garlic crop and why I decided to plant San Marzano tomatoes instead of Romas this year.
As always, if you enjoyed this video, please make sure that you give it a like, share it around, and subscribe. Thanks so much and I hope you all have a lovely day!

Is my garlic ruined? Rotting bulbs from too much water? | Australian Homestead Garden
Переглядів 97614 днів тому
Is this the start of my garlic bulbs rotting? 😬 I really hope not! This year, we planted around 250 garlic cloves into the veggie garden. The variety is called Australian Purple, and it was doing fantastic until I recently noticed some softer areas on some of the developing bulbs. Check out the video to find out what could have caused this and what I am doing to help the situation. I just hope ...
Will this prevent snakes in the veggie garden this summer? | Australian Homestead Garden

I have seen a few snakes already this spring, which terrifies me! Eastern Brown Snakes, which is even more terrifying! I am looking for tips to keep snakes out of the garden this summer. Will this snake deterant work? Snakes don't have ears, so they aren't scared off by loud noises. It is vibrations in the ground that can scare them off, and that is what I hoping to achieve with this device her...

Have a nice day ♥️ 😊😊😊😊
Thank you! I hope you have a lovely day too. 😀🌻
Can you do a video when you prune your grape vines please? Thanks
Sure sounds good. 😀🌻
Looking forward to your next garden tour for sure 👍
Awesome, thanks! I will try to film one in the next week. 😀🌻
Love a good garden tour especially when in Australia ❤ I’ll try this weekend the Diatomaceous Earth the pill bugs destroyed my cucumbers over night I’m having so much trouble this year with every evil bug there is
I'm sorry to hear about your cucumbers. I definitely feel like the bugs are at a whole new level this year. We are having a bit of trouble too. 😕 I really hope the DE works for you, like it did with my garden. Let me know how you go. 😀🌻
Although there are many woodlice (slaters, pill bugs, whatever) in my garden, I've never noticed damage the way you have. I'm wondering if it's because your surface soil is moist most of the time? They tend to hang out in damp shaded areas. So, between moist soil and straw mulch would be ideal for them. I only have a layer of compost as mulch now and tend to use straw only in the hot months. Just a thought. Cheers!
Hi. 😀 Thanks for the insight. I am wondering if the moist environment is a factor too. I had turned off the irrigation in this bed to see if that helps. We did use lucerne mulch in this area, we usually use sugar cane mulch. I wonder if that is a factor too? 🤔 We have never had a problem with them in the garden until now and this is the first time we have used the lucerne mulch. I wonder if that is keeping the moisture in more? 🤔🤔
Garden tour please.
Sounds good. I will try and do it next week some time. 😀🌻
Thanks for the video, I'm growing garlic for the first time and excited to dig it up when the time is right! Your video prompted me on irrigation ideas, so perhaps you would be happy to do a video (or send me in the right direction) on irrigation tips, resources etc. Keep up the great work xx
Hi. 😀 That is very exciting about your garlic. It is always an exciting time when you get to harvest all of your hard work. I hope you get a great crop. 😊 I have done a video on irrigation quite a while ago, but it was quite brief so I think I will do another one again soon. 😀 🌻
These things generally eat stuff that is already rotting. If you find insect damage to a plant that is not already rotting, go out after dark with a flashlight and see if you can spot the actual culprit. Roly polies are everywhere in every garden and they dont tend to be a pest, so I dont see why they would be in your case. I cant help but think there is another problem and these bugs are just cleaning up the dead vegetable matter. I could be wrong, its an educated hunch. After watching more video, it seems your plants are dying from root rot and these arthropods are eating the dead material. Bad soil or too wet or no aeration, would be my guess. Do you get earwigs in australia? Look at your plants at night.
Hi. I am thinking that the soil is too damp. We have had a fair bit of rain here lately and I am guessing the thick layer of mulch of keeping the soil very damp. I have inspected around some of the stems at the soil level and I can't see any rotting of the stems thankfully, although the mulch was very close to the plants, so I will be moving it away slightly. Also the DE seems to be helping which is great. There hasn't been anymore damage since applying it. 😀🙏🌻
Hi there, I'm a gardener in Melbourne. I've had this issue as well with these rolly pollies (I call them), I noticed it last season as well and I think it's due to the access dampness around this time of year. They go away when the soil temperature gets hotter and drier. id suggest keeping your seedlings in small pots until the stems are strong enough to survive these things. One other thing ive found that helps is a product from bunnings called "Richgro 5kg Lawn Beetle And Grub Killa" or any other brand and i spinkle these in my raised beds mixed into the mulch. they deter all sorts of bugs including ear wigs too which eat alot of my seedlings. Hope that helps.
Hi. Yes I am wondering if it is how damp the soil is. We have had a bit of rain here lately, and because of the mulch, the soil is staying quite wet. So far the DE seems to be helping. 🙏 Thanks for the tips. 🌻
They are essential to the ecosystem. You should also observe collemobola as a beneficial
They definitely have their benefits. 👍
The slater bugs are coming in to breakdown damaged plant material. I suggest theres something wrong with your pumpkins or soil nutrition that is signalling for the wood lice coming to break it down. They think it needs them to break it down for some reason. Are you using synthetic fertilisers? Or did perhaps the your mulch has been turned under your soil a little too much? very strange, never seen slaters attack a pumpkin plant like that before.
Hmm, I hope not. I topped up the beds with some mushroom compost, and we only use organic fertilizer in the gardens. The mulch we have used in this garden bed is organic lucerne, but it's the first time we have used it in the garden, so I'm not sure if that is attracting the bugs? I may take some notes and see if I there is a connection somewhere. 🤔🤔
A toilet roll around the plant babies will help to keep them off. You can cut them off and compost when done, or leave em on to decompose 🤗
Such a great idea! Thanks! 😀🌻
What happens to the heavy metals once they "remove" them? Do they get chemically converted into something that is not a heavy metal? Why are naturally occurring elements in one's garden not appropriate?
Hi. 😊 What a great question. I actually had to do a little research, and what I found was that the "bugs" take in heavy metals like lead and cadmium and crystallize these ions in their guts. The heavy metal toxins are then made into spherical deposits in the mid gut. With this special cleanup property, pill bugs survive where most creatures can’t, in the most contaminated sites. That is pretty cool! 😀 Also, it is important for the soil to contain some natural elements, but like all things, they must be in a balance for the better health of the soil, the plants growing in that soil, and for us too (the consumers of the veggies). Sometimes, there is an excess build-up of natural occurring elements in our soils, from either human causes or natural reasons, it is important for us as gardeners that we restore that balance. A lot of people test their soils to see if there is an imbalance and then go from there. 😊
Chicken, will eat them.
Yes they would love them. They might just love my pumpkin seedlings too. 😂
There are over 1000 different bugs on this planet. You can not know every bug. Porcellio scaber (Armadillidiidae)
Yes very true. Thanks for the name. 😀🌻
I make a collar from old soft drink bottles and old pots. Put them around the plant and dig them in a bit. Seems to work well
That sounds like a great idea. I might give that a try. Thanks. 😀
I use toilet roll tubes 😊
Oh yes, the correct name for those bugs is "Common Slater". From what I heard and from my experience they harm your garden significantly when there are many of them and they can be tolerated when just a few... I must admit, that in disregard of their numbers I just squash them when they are getting in my path :). Don't use any chemicals really.
Hi. 😊 I totally forgot about the name "Slater". 🤦♀️ I have never had an issue with them until now. They have been absolutely decimating my seedlings. The Diatomaceous earth seems to be helping though thankfully. The numbers of them in my garden at the moment are enormous. I don't like to use chemicals in the garden too, so I'm thankful that the DE is helping. 🙏
I'm a newbie garlic grower. I'm in Adelaide and I planted them early March. They have started to die back, some of the leaves are yellow and crusty and some are still green and fresh. However, I have no bulbs. 😢 not sure what went wrong. 🫠
Hi. 😊 I'm sorry to hear that. That must be very frustrating. Do you mean there is no bulb at all, or are there no cloves that have formed yet? That sounds very odd. Which variety are you growing?
Slaters, supposed to be decomposers but they don't mind fresh stuff either. I found cloches or tubes around seedlings helped but gosh they breed faster than rabbits. I am not sure but i think the mulch made it worse. I'll be following your success with DE or any other attempts.
Oh yes! A slater! I forgot that they were called that. 😅 It seems like the DE is helping so far, but I will do a proper update down the track. They do seem to breed very quickly! 😬
I had to replace my plants in the front yard twice because so many pill bugs eating them I have tried the iron snail baits and it has worked mostly there only attacking 1 plant now instead of all 25 of them
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I never realised that they could be such a pain. 😬😬
Also, the ground does look super wet. That will rot seedlings. Better to be on the drier side if it can be helped. You’ve been getting rain, but I’d stop any supplementary watering for a few weeks until the ground dries out 🤗
Yes you're right, it was a bit wet. We got a huge storm last night and it bucketed down. 😬 I forgot to turn off today's irrigation though so I will pop outside and turn off the timer now. Thanks for the reminder! 😀
I've seen some gardeners use ducks for pest control as they're not as destructive as chooks. Also could use Neem oil?...I had to use it recently as something was eating my blueberries & all leaves on one plant!...cocoons as evidence left on the protective fence
We are currently breeding up some ducks to use in our orchard for bug control. 😀 I agree. They don't do as much damage as chooks, but they still love my lettuce. 😅 Oh I hope you saved your blueberry plant! 😬
@12acresfarm naked blueberry plant alive, not many berries left on it's neighbour but it is growing more leaves🙏
Hopefully it will recover well. 😊🌻
Will you need to replace it every time you water or it rains? Give us an update at some later stage?
If it rains I will need to reapply it, but I bottom water so hopefully it won't wash away with the irrigation system. 😊
Wait. Harvesting Capsicums and tomatoes in October? What climate are you in? I’m moving! lol From Melbourne here. 👋🏽
Hi. 😀 I am in Central NSW, but we overwintered the capsicums and tomatoes so we have them ready now. 😅🌻
We spotted a black snake at the back of our property today (Eastern Victoria). Really hoping it doesn’t come any closer to the house 😬
Oh no! I hope it stays away too! 😬😬
It’s a crime that your channel doesn’t have more followers. Looking forward to watching your channel grow as I know it’s fairly new 🤗
Awe that's so lovely of you to say. Thank you. 🌻
I had no idea there was a perennial gourd! How does the taste compare to pumpkin?
It doesn't have much of a flavour. I would actually compare it to a choko in the sense that it takes on the flavour of what it is cooked with. But apparently it can also be turned into a sweet by boiling it down for hours. I have never done it before though so can't comment on the taste of it sweetened version. 😊
@@12acresfarm interesting! Still I love free fill in my meals.haha. Chokos are a staple here in autumn. 🍂
@RoseNewland Definitely, they are awesome! I love bulking up my meals. 😀
Guinea fowls are supposed to be excellent at keeping snakes away. Not sure how much mess they’d make in your garden though.
I have heard that, although we had some guinea fowl a while ago and a snake slithered past them, a few metres away and they did nothing! 🤯 So I kind of lost my confidence in the guineas. 😅
Oh no! Garlic is my best and most important harvest
It is so important here too! 🙏 I hope it will be OK. I am out to check on it again. 😬
We’re thinking of getting one, but we want a tame one. Do you know if it’s possible to tame them?
Ours is quite tame, but we bought him like that. Apparently, it is pretty easy to get them friendly. The lady who we bought our alpaca from calls all her alpacas, and they come running over from the other side of the paddock. 😅 As for taming them, I would imagine you would need to get them young for it to work best. 😊
That 💩 is Gold! Pay gold for it too if I can find it😮 I buy grass fed only cow 💩...it doesn't smell much at all..I put it in a kiddie pool(with holes) in chook pen, they compost it well with daily kitchen scraps 👌
That's the way to go. 😀 What a great way to process the cow poo. 👏👏
@@12acresfarm chickens have fun & earn their keep = easy compost for me🥰
Definitely. 😀
I have one giant rabbit who meets all my garden poo needs 😂
Rabbits are fantastic for that too. 😀
Would like to hear more about your animals and why you have them. We only have chooks so far
Sure, I might make a video like that. 😀 Chooks are a great starter animal. They call them the gateway animal to homesteading. 😅🌻
I grow hardneck garlic every year (NC, USA, planting mid-Oct and harvesting late May), saving 150 bulbs for planting the following year. About 2 weeks after the scapes are harvested, and about 3-4 of the bottom leaves are dead/dying, at that point I pull them. This past spring, I think I pulled a little late and after a rain caught me by surprise, and it cost me. My haul had some damage, and isn't storing properly. I'd highly recommend getting a couple out of the ground, and peel them back and see what quality of the bulb is looking like. I'm no expert by any stretch, but if I could go back in time, that's what I'd do. I'm going to change my strategy going forward to err on the side of pulling early, rather than pushing and risking too late. Good luck!!
Thanks so much for the advice. I think I'll pull some out of the ground and see how they look. I'm sorry yours isn't storing well. That would be so frustrating. 😕
@@12acresfarm Yeah, it was a little heartbreaking, since those are also my cloves for planting (plant enough each year to eat and replant). Fingers crossed that we both cross the finish line in better shape than anticipated! 😁
A DC electric shock neutralizes hemotoxins in a snake bite. Internet and doctors say it doesn't work, but I've actually seen it work when our snake handler got bit by an eastern diamondback rattlesnake. The team couldn't find keys to the trucks, so he ended up getting shocked 3 or 4 times with the riding lawnmower plug wire. Even his doctor was shocked that he didn't lose his finger or hand from gangrene as is normal from these bites. A stun gun or taser does the same thing, but it's very portable. Many folk that work in the jungles of South America carry tasers for this reason, because they're days or weeks from medical care. All of the ones that have used the DC shock say it hurts, but they're still alive. I use nylon bird netting around the perimeter of the garden and chicken areas. It only needs to be 2 to 3 feet high, but no gaps at ground level. Snakes get caught in it because their scales get tangled in the netting. This is the only reason my hubby didn't get bit by 2 huge copperheads when we were clearing the garden at the end of the season. They both got caught in the netting that I had used to keep the chickens out of that bed. A couple of blasts took care of that threat. After having to kill 2 other copperheads inside our barn, I now have netting around the lower perimeter of the building. We also broadcast sulfur pellets (not garden sulfur) across the yard and around all of our buildings. This repels mice and other rodents, as well as lizards and frogs. All of these are food for snakes. Some say that it also repels snakes while the "experts" say it has no effect. Umm, yeah, it works. We've been using it for 4 years now after having to kill 4 snakes our first week on the property. I recently heard lime works as well, but haven't tried that to see how effective it is. Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for your comment and advice. 😀 Wow, that is absolutely crazy, I have never heard that about the electric netting. We have just bought some of the same netting but haven't electrified it yet. I will have to do so asap. Hopefully it will work just as well for me as it did for you. God Bless, Kelly. 🌻
@12acresfarm The netting that I used isn't electric, like poultry netting. It's the black nylon netting that a lot of people put over berries and fruit trees to keep birds from eating the fruit. It's very lightweight. I've also used a heavier nylon type that's sold as deer fencing or something like that. A friend gave it to me after using most of it to partition a section of her chicken coop for new chicks. It's heavier and easier to work with than the berry netting. Both will hold any snake that gets tangled in them. The lighter stuff is easier to rip away with a garden rake. After shooting the snakes caught in the heavier stuff, we left them for 2 days and then used a potato fork and rake to remove the whole structure and toss in the trash. Be aware that even dead snakes are still deadly. They can and will try to bite for at least 24 to 36 hours after being terminated. Best wishes on your gardening. 👋😊
@itsamysticlife3500 Ah OK. Thanks, I think I need to invest in some of that netting. Wow, that fact is scary! 😬😬
My grandfather would use naphthalene balls scattered around the area they wanted to keep snakes away.
Interesting! I may have to give this method a go. 😊
I would imagine so as the family would sometimes sleep outside in the summer nights and they used the naphthalene around the areas they slept. No one ever got bitten.
@-xyz-012 That sounds fantastic! I will definitely give that a try. 😀
do you have King Snakes in Australia? I have seen a pest control guy spray a garlic spray he said snakes do not like garlic. They may not like moth balls but moth balls can be toxic and run off beneficial insects. I live in Louisiana and we have all kinds of snakes
We have King Browns here in Australia. I have heard of using garlic spray, but I have no idea how often I would need to apply it. I might give it a go around the garden and see if it helps. 😊
No advice from me, here in Brisbane...mine looked like shallots last 2 harvests 🙄
@badajoma Oh that is not good. 😞😞 Keep going with it though. Some years the weather can muck things up for us gardeners. 😬
@12acresfarm I read recently warm winters don't help...? Garlic chives will have to do until next attempt along with Aussie grown buys
Ah OK. I had no idea. 🤯
I have had a shocking year with my garlic 1st got rust then black aphids keep attacking now they have witches broom it only is the Australian purple that is being attacked by everything so I’m wondering if it has to do with who I brought it from? As my other garlics from other place has been fine and in the same garden bed
@NaomiJane80 That's so odd, isn't it. 🤔🤔 Maybe look into who the seller was , what their climate was like, and what their growing practices are. It sounds very strange that it is only affecting that one variety. 🤔
Mmmm, should i even look at mine 🙄
@deborahlee8135 I feel like that sometimes too. 😬😬
There are similar devices for rodents, insects and other pests, and none of them work, so I would definitely be skeptical.
Oh no. So far, the reviews I am hearing haven't been good at all. 😬😬
And remember that some types of garlic take 2 years to grow cloves ie elephant garlic
I think this variety should be ready within a year. I meant to plant out some elephant garlic too but ran out of time. 😕
I didn't know that, i'm glad i alternated rows.
I stopped watering my garlic a couple weeks ago. Seems to help bulb formation
That's good to hear. The water is off for that garden bed now, so hopefully that will be OK. 😀
Your garlic looks very similar to mine, I'm just going to keep going and hope it all comes out okay in the end. It doesn't look like there is any real rot on mine, and soft garlic does not mean rot it's still growing after all. Good luck and hopefully your crops keep growing and turn out wonderful.
I'm so glad to hear you say that. Hopefully, we both have an abundance of garlic. Thanks so much for the advice. 😀🌻
I am still learning about garlic growing too. Keep us updated please. I hope your garlic doesnt rot.
There is always something to learn with gardening. I will definitely do an update video in a few weeks. 👍
I hope you get a good harvest of garlic. That would be disappointing to loose all that garlic.
Thanks. I hope so too. 🙏
This is what Iraq calls it, specifically Baghdad, which calls it Takki.😊😅
How cool. 😀🌻
Damn, that's a lot of berrys for one tree.
Yep. And it's only a little tree too! 🤯🌻
Nice
Thanks! 😀🌻
