  • Discover what's new in the On Cloudmonster 2 running shoes and hear what sets them apart from other contenders in the max-cushioned road shoe category. Having run 400 kilometres in them... we can confirm the secret sauce is their unique combination of comfort, protection, propulsion, and energy return - all rolled into one.
The midsole now features a new dual density foam construction. While there's still Helion cushioning in the bottom layer, a new top layer of Bounce board foam provides even softer cushioning and impact absorption, while maintaining great energy return.
There's also a new nylon blend Speedboard (sandwiched between the two foams) that should deliver great propulsion and aid the forward rolling sensation. The result of the new midsole construction should more cushioning and more rebound.
The upper also features the following changes: reworked engineered mesh and lining material selection for better comfort; a reworked eyestay for more lockodown; and more recycled content.
From a cushioning perspective, the midsole feels ultra protective and comfortable, yet very lively underfoot. This means the cushioning performs over a range of intensities: recovery days, steady efforts, and even some tempo running. Of course, the thick stacked midsole feels great for longer distances. It's also helps the midsole feels very stable and supportive.
In terms of fit, they feel very spacious in the toe box and should suit runners with broad forefoot shapes. However, as the midfoot offers great lockdown, they can also work for runners with narrower feet. The ankle area should feel secure and comfortable.
Overall, the On Cloudmonster 2 running shoes are one of the most versatile max-cushioned running shoes available. Few running shoes offer this level of protection and performance over such a wide range of paces and distances.

Majority of reviewers speak highly of the Cloudeclipse but I found them very uncomfortable and a bit too wide with terrible heel slippage. The most comfortable & fun On Cloud running shoes that I have tried were the Cloudsurfer and to a lesser extent the Cloudmonster.

Thanks for your comment. One of the strengths of the On Running Shoes range is the choice on offer. That’s unfortunate you didn’t get on well with the Cloudeclipse, but the great that the Cloudsurfer feel good.
It highlights how different everyone’s feet are. Personally, I find the padded heel counter on the Cloudsurfer lacks the lockdown that the Cloudeclipse offers me. It’s clear how the contrasting levels of padding around the Cloudsurfer and Cloudeclipse heel counters can result in different fit experiences.

Agree! The Eclipse is so loose and uncomfortable!

Thanks for the review! How much more life do you think the Cloudmonster2 has in them after your 400km? Does it feel any less responsive or not as cushioned right now as compared to when you first got them out of the box?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi. Thanks for your question. The performance didn’t really change much - which is very impressive. The level of responsiveness and cushioning is pretty much on par with how they felt to begin with.
Now that I’m closer to 500km in them, the outsole rubber is starting to show some visible signs of wear - but the cushioning still feels very similar. I’m expecting they’ll continue to feel good past 500 miles of running. We’ll post a short review to show how they look at this point.

      Thanks for your question.
The Cloudmonster 2 should feel very comfortable and feel pretty propulsive at this pace/effort. They should also work well as daily mileage running shoes for your training.
On the other hand, it is worth noting that there are various options which could help sub 3.30 pace feel easier, in comparison to the Cloudmonster 2. At that sort of intensity, you'll likely experience improvements in running economy in carbon plated superfoam running shoes. Models such as the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4, Nike Alphafly 3 and and Nike Vaporfly 3 offer more cushioning and propulsion than the likes of Cloudmonster 2. These options can make marathon pace feel significantly easier to sustain.
If you're looking for the optimal marathon set-up, you could do a lot of your training miles in the Cloudmonster 2, and then opt for a model that offers more help on race day. However, if you're looking for one pair of shoes for everything, the Cloudmonster 2 are one of the best options. Hope this helps.
