Absolutely love this set even as someone who isn't obsessed with batman. Just the details and mechanics, it feels like they got everything right in my eyes.
I bought this set the day it was released directly from lego. Even used VIP discount to knock the price down a little. I am a fan of the '89 and '92 Burton Batman films as they were right when I was a kid getting into superheroes. I thoroughly enjoyed the building of this set and I endorse Lego to make more shadow box sets, either more from the DC theme or others, as long as they all have really interesting features and fun playability. Because of this set I have gone back to purchase the (now retired) 1989 Batwing set from an ebay seller. Building Lego sets themed around my fandoms just brings me joy. It really is a breathtaking set, the care and detail is astonishing, and my only real complaint is the stickers. Not only a fanstastic set, but one of the best memorabilia and display pieces available for Burton's Batman.

@@henrirobbins2343 this narrative of “stickers don’t last long” needs to be stopped. I think this needed more gray pieces on the interior because the Batman outline is hard to see with the darkness of the box while closed, but the saving grace is that this can open up into an almost straight line to be displayed, which allows light to enter and show off the design. I didn’t like how the LEGO had it halfway opened in the box art, because I thought it would be only displayable open halfway. (10:53 vs 1:28)
I think putting this set side by side with Rivendell and Lion Knight's Castle was the nail in the coffin for me. Initially when I saw this set I thought it was great but as I see and learn more about it I'm so much less enthused. I understand it's definitely a display piece but so is Rivendell and look what you get there. Something like 20 minifigs and it's modular to make separate scenes. Another issue for me is comparing it to the 60's tv show Batcave they did years ago (which I have). Batmobile, batcopter, batcycle, 9 minifigs and it was modular with three separate sections and is a truly amazing Batcave setup. All that in 2500 pieces, 1400 less than this set. Would it be safe to say those extra 1400 pieces all go into the box? I'd be interested to find out the answer. I think had they used this concept and somehow made the front of the box able to accommodate the batwing, and added another 4-5 minifigs, I'd be able to give it a full thumbs up. As it is I've slipped into feeling a bit "meh" about it.
Just finished building it and IMHO, one of the finest Batman sets they’ve ever made. There is something very special about it, from concept to execution. I’m not a super Batman fan but would recommend it to anyone/everyone. I hope LEGO makes more unique stuff like this.
An excellent looking set. Definitely, one I'll have to pick up. A Superman "Shadow Box" would be very cool to put alongside it, especially in terms of a contrast between the Bat Cave and Fortress of Solitude. Great video and thanks for showing!
If I wanted LEGO convention creations I'd go to one, lol. I'm glad you like it though. I'll only like it when it goes on clearance. Platforms with stairs would have been amazing. They did Ewok Village and at this price point they had so much to work with and give us a box. I watched '89 Batman again and I never saw ladders in the Batcave and Alfred sure wasn't going up and down any either.
The guy who came up with the small batmobile deserve a raise, I own the big one and this one look amazingly accurate. I don't know if the set will be available for long, I hope I will be able to get it later
When the set was released I watched so many videos but it was one of those sets which I knew I had to first see in person before buying. I saw it on display at the Lego Store and was instantly sold. It’s a lot bigger than I thought, and I love the characters, even if they don’t fit into the set well. Bruce and Alfred look astonishing. Big fan of Batman and really enjoy Batman Returns. Definitely going to cop it when I can.
I agree with you about it maybe being based BTAS or the Nolan trilogy would've been a better choice but as a fan of the Tim Burton Batman films, this is pretty cool. Really don't get the hate towards it. We don't get Batcaves very often and most of the previous ones haven't been great, apart from the 2006 one, that's a classic!
Looks like the Batmobile in this set is basically the same one as the upcoming 76224 Batmobile: Batman vs. The Joker Chase model. Some very slightly different details?
No idea what to think about it (apart from expensive which is a given) - there is something I like about it but it honestly looks like it needs lighting. Wish you had added some, I think that would actually make a lot of difference to this set.
Wish they would of thrown in figures, references to the 89 film as well. Then this would of been a must get. Like a Knox, Gordon, Harvey Dent, and Eckhart figure. This set is definitely tempting.
The thing i like about legos is that if you look at them as finite modular building pieces and the fun and challenge with them is to see what you can do/build with them. Which is the original intent of legos; being creative with them. Finest example of this approach is the typewriter, very elegant and realistic looking.
Lego CEO: "Don't you dare use the word dollhouse in your review. It's a manly display for big boys and definitely not a black dollhouse. It has nothing in common with a dollhouse. It's a clamshell"
Before it’s official drop, this completed set was sitting on the register counter at the lego store. I fell in love with this set the minute I set my eyes on it. This set is SWEET!!! This is a must have!
When the box is enclosed, you can't see the Batman logo silhouette well. The background is to dark. I don't know if this is a camera thing or if this is also so in real life. but if it is, I think this set is a failure. The whole idea of the set hinges on how it looks from the outside, and that doesn't seem to work.
After seeing this set, it is way more nice than I thought it was. Nice figures, features and details, along with a great looking Batmobile. But that price is just too much. If it was a ‘deeper’ build, as in a more spacious cave, then it might be worth that price. Also, Batman Returns (and even 89) have okay looking caves, but the Batman Forever cave, Animated Series cave, and Dark Knight Trilogy cave(s) would have been better picks, imo
I think it’s somewhat on par with the MBS Cantina. The cantina could have been displayed either closed as a stand alone building or opened up to see the internal details. And it’s in roughly a similar price point in price per piece. I’d be curious what they look like side by side.
Honestly , I love the shadow box look. For someone who has a modern interior . It really fits the modern approach . I always found the regular Lego set looks kind of gimmick and not modern enough …. If that makes any sense . The sense of reveal and the unassuming interior is so unique . I would proudly display this in my living room without it looking to childish . It is defiantly one of the more sophisticated looking Lego set .
Great review! The only thing that threw me off was you said the dust is going to get through the gates on top but there is a huge Batman cut out hole on the front 🤣 love the set though!!
Using Batman Returns actually makes alot of sense since the Flashpoint Movie is being released soon which is the first time (in a long time) Keaton has reprised his role as Batman, at least I'm pretty sure he hasn't really done it before this movie.
IMO this is creatively one of the best Lego sets... possibly in decades. Lego sets - at least the most adult geared ones tend to be big and bulky. If you are a collector, then its an ongoing challenge to find space & display. This can easily become wall art for scale, display and interest. The fact that you can open up and play, in itself is a huge bonus given the design concept. It captures the world of Batman and the color scheme of the Batcave with the darkness beautifully. Is it pricey... Sure! But so is everything Lego now. This set is defining as it could be the start of a new range of themed display sets. Imagine a few of these on walls of shelves! Yes dust! But that's bane of all Lego sets. This one is easy to secure and protect without elaborate casing. For me, this is just scratching the surface of what Lego can potentially do in the future. Its sleek, modern and brings a new versatility to its range not seen in a very long time. Well done Lego and specifically to its designer for thinking that the box itself would be "out of the box"!
It would be loads better if there was Bruce manor on the top and it would open up to give a bigger play set, I think it would make it a lot better and I would buy it
Ugh, its for people to build, like, close and then tuck it away in a basement. Imagine if all of the budget went to the actual batcave, instead of 60% of the parts making a literal box.
I’m not a huge Batman fan but this set is awesome. I think at $400 it’s decently priced. Idk where people get the $200 value from. I guess they’ve never looked at the price of UCS set, master builders etc. $400 for a set of that size and detail is decent. This isn’t marketed as a play set for kids.
Its a bit difficult to make out the batman symbol when closed because everything is dark. Maybe this idea should've been reserved for a different hero/theme
The box looks so weird with a black shadow box that has a dark grey interior on a black box. It's hard to make out what the set even is on the packaging. The bat logo needed a white or gold oval around it like the movie it's based on to stand out better.
I wonder what it looks like if lit from above through those openings 🤔 This set is wacky. The black batlogo's appearance gets muddled by the insides of the dreary cave (understandably, but still); the Burton batcave doesn't really look anything like this; I can get a remarkably similar '89 version of the batmobile itself. So, for $400, it's a tough sell for me.
One of the best Lego sets I've had the pleasure of building, i would love to see a 1960s Adam West era Shadowbox or even a Wayne manor shadowbox to make it expandable. Think this is a such a great concept and really needs to be looked into and expanded upon beyond batman, there could also be an Iron Man Hall of Armor Box. Star Wars Hoff station, something Mandalorian based.. Spiderman and the Lizard in the sewers of NYC..
Fans of the films are delighted. Tim Burton made great Batman stories with great artwork. The set doesn't realy gets up to speed, but the minifigs are great.
I think the castle is the best thing lego ever made in terms of scale, beauty, theme appeal, playability for all ages and sexes, with 4 factions of minis! Its great, displays well and is super playable.
This shadow box concept is such a turnoff for me. So much of the parts budget goes to building the shadow box instead of making a good batcave display piece.
You said it right!!! Without further ado instead of “without do”. I can now stop complaining about that. You earned the like button…no more trash talk from me!!! I know it was so picky.
Personally, I loved this set as I saw it. I thought it was great to create this huge box with this gigantic logo and I think you don’t talk enough about this logo. I only bought it during the last batman Day, that is to say last week but I think that the 400€ that it cost me are an excellent investment. Yes, I’m not very objective since I’m a big fan of batman and especially movies with Mickeal Keaton but here, it’s a masterclass and those who complain are just cheesy
I like it but they should have used less bricks to make it cheaper to buy like maybe in the $100-$300 range... Like how many people are buying $400 sets to play with? But yeah it is nice and they are selling the Batmobile separately which is nice though but brick creep is a major issue for me with modern Lego.
I'm sold. Now they just need to do this with each of the main franchises (Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Nolan trilogy, The Batman, BTAS, TNBA, Batfleck).
someone said this is a $200 set with a $200 gimmick and i agree, if i saw this as a MOC id think this is the coolest thing ever but as an official set? ill pass
I will get this but there was really no excuse for not having a few more figures, there were plenty across both movies like Vicki Vale, Joker, and a couple clowns. A set with the end scene Penguin hideout with the Bat flying boat, etc.
i know people hate this set, but i saw someone who put usb led strips above the grates on the top and had the led strip light shine down into the closed box and it looked insanely cool, made me go from hating it to kind of wanting it
I would love to see this style of set made with Avengers Campus or Tony Stark House with all the Iron Man suits.... I wonder how many 90s kids would love this but for the Legends of the Hidden Temple TV show.

It would be loads better if there was Bruce manor on the top and it would open up to give a bigger play set, I think it would make it a lot better and I would buy it
Those mechanical features are just insane, I'm sat here with my jaw on the floor haha!
I saw this movie in the theater as a kid. It was amazing! I really want this set. Definitely nice
Holy fingerprints Batman!
Man if I had this set when I was youngster that flame holder compartment would of stored something else
Ugh, its for people to build, like, close and then tuck it away in a basement.
Imagine if all of the budget went to the actual batcave, instead of 60% of the parts making a literal box.
The grills on top are for light to shine through
As someone who doesn't have a lot of money. 200 would've been an actual good price. Maybe 300 and then on sale you get it close to 200
The whole "shadow box" gimmick is a huge waste of bricks. I had high hopes for this set when the description and prices were leaked.
That’s fucking awesome
Its a bit difficult to make out the batman symbol when closed because everything is dark. Maybe this idea should've been reserved for a different hero/theme
The box looks so weird with a black shadow box that has a dark grey interior on a black box. It's hard to make out what the set even is on the packaging. The bat logo needed a white or gold oval around it like the movie it's based on to stand out better.
Could of used more grey or at least some light bricks on the roof to spotlight the different areas
omg this is perfect in every way ?? I NEED THIS SO BAD NOW
I wonder what it looks like if lit from above through those openings 🤔
This set is wacky.
They should make death star II re-make like this, should be good for $1,000
Ordered mine last night
I'm so glad Batman Returns is finally getting some representation!
Fans of the films are delighted. Tim Burton made great Batman stories with great artwork. The set doesn't realy gets up to speed, but the minifigs are great.
Spinning the chair is a blast
This is really cool. I hope lego does more shadowbox sets like this
I think that this set is particularly outstanding with aftermarket light kits.
No cap Lego have legit bought this guy now
I want it. The 92 movie is my favorite Batman movie. It’s ridiculous in the best ways.
And it fits in my bookshelf boxes perfectly.
A Batman the animated series batcave would have been epic
The Batman and Alfred mini figs are amazing!! Great set!
I think the box idea is dumb but the inside is dope
I want lego to produce more Batman sets but based on the Arkham games. How incredible would that be (it will drain my savings) 😅
You did change my opinion of this set. Though, given the choice I would rather have the Lion Knights Castle. It's just so much more colorful.
I think the castle is the best thing lego ever made in terms of scale, beauty, theme appeal, playability for all ages and sexes, with 4 factions of minis! Its great, displays well and is super playable.
I think this looks awesome. And I like it does not scream batmanlogo. When you go closer and you see omg it’s a bat logo and a bat cave!
This shadow box concept is such a turnoff for me. So much of the parts budget goes to building the shadow box instead of making a good batcave display piece.
Looks like a cool build, next step to make it next level would be a light kit. That would knock it out of park.
Very cool, but the extra pieces to make the effect makes it to expensive
bruce's gaming set up looks wild
That's a 200$ set in a 200$ gimmick 😅 Just look how they made the back of that PAC-MAN arcade, without spending 1/4 of the pieces.
someone said this is a $200 set with a $200 gimmick and i agree, if i saw this as a MOC id think this is the coolest thing ever but as an official set? ill pass
Would be nice if some big yellow plate / plates were included to put behind the negative space logo to make it pop out while on display.
I will get this but there was really no excuse for not having a few more figures, there were plenty across both movies like Vicki Vale, Joker, and a couple clowns. A set with the end scene Penguin hideout with the Bat flying boat, etc.
YESS the forestfire101 animations came to my head when I saw that rotating batman chair LMFAO I bet hes going crazy for this set
personally im thinking of buying a couple of 6 by 6 black tiles and putting them over the grates on top to stop any dust from getting in
Relive 2006 Batman days?
Dude, the movies with Keaton came out in early to mid 90’s 😂
I would love the 18+ Animated Batman Series Batmobile ❤
Yeah idk I thought about getting Rivendell set but this is a bit cheaper and I’m a big Batman fan also I have room for this set
i know people hate this set, but i saw someone who put usb led strips above the grates on the top and had the led strip light shine down into the closed box and it looked insanely cool, made me go from hating it to kind of wanting it
This set is so cool too bad it's $400 that's $100 too much in my opinion.
This would look great with some LEDs installed.
I would love to see this style of set made with Avengers Campus or Tony Stark House with all the Iron Man suits.... I wonder how many 90s kids would love this but for the Legends of the Hidden Temple TV show.
