Recently I have had some bad front end suspension noises (eg severe clunking) occurring with my Mercedes ML-Class W164 chassis vehicle. This video is not my normal how to style of video of replacing a specific failed component, because as you will see I did not actually solve the issue with my first attempt. Rather what I have attempted to do in this video is explain to you the issue that I had and the process I went through to solve the issue, which I trust others with a similar issue may find useful!
Initially I thought the clunking suspension noises was caused by failing Torsion (or Sway) Bar Link Ends and I replaced them. A full link to this video can be found here:
• Mercedes ML and GL Swa...
In my case the actual problem was a failed strut or shock absorber within the Front Right AIRMATIC Strut Assembly and a full link to the video where I replaced this complete Strut Assembly can be found here:
• How to Replace Mercede...
In the above video I replaced the failed strut or shock absorber with an aftermarket replacement Air Strut Shock Absorber Assembly. You can purchase this from the following links:

As always, stay safe and have a great day folks!
Thank you so much for your videos!!! Greetings from Texas. I'm planning to get a W222 and these types of videos help me tremendously. Cheers!!
You seem to be having all the issues that I've got but slightly before me. Good for me because you're showing me how to fix everything 😁
This might help someone, I had front end noises coming from the front of my 2008 GL 320…. I did have two worn bushings rear bushings left, and right they were making a noise, but the front end noise was totally different. Turned out the oil filter housing was leaking running down on the rack and pinion bushings. It wore out the rack and pinion bushings. I had the rack and pinion bushings replaced and the noise was gone. 😊
subbed, great explanations
Hi, great content! How much was the air shock absorber/strut cost? Was it an aftermarket or Genuine mercedes part?
Hi Mate, I replaced the shock absorber / strut with this aftermarket unit: amzn.to/3rmq4Zl Cheers Drew
THNX
These cars I am finding to be quite hard to diagnose. I’ve just found a front end knock to come from a cv joint.(hard to believe)
The longer rhs shaft is quite heavy and can cause a suspension like noise if bad enough. Found by accident…..
Fix one thing, find out you fix two things
Hi Mate, it certainly can be a little painful, however I genuinely like my car! Cheers Drew
Thats great content and I have been a long time follower. Own a pre facelift W164 and can say that you are having some great fuel economy figures. I use my w164 as a weekend driver on long journeys and during the last 8k km have an average of 10.2l/100km. Depends a lot on the road conditions in your country as where I live there are a lot of uphills which cause a hit on the fuel economy. Just wondering what service interval are you following on yoir W164? I have been servicing it every 9k km using 5w30 MB 229.51 genuine MB oil.
Hi Mate, I service at least every 12 months and typically do around 15,000 kms a year. I run a Australian brand of oil, Penrite fully synthetic which meets the recommended MB specification. Cheers Drew
Thanks Drew, I don't understand why you talk about fuel consumption, is there another video where you explain how to minimize it ? Is this car running on gazoil or unleaded fuel ?
Hi Louis, what I have found overall is that my Mercedes is just running increasingly better the more I maintain and replace parts. In particular I found a surprisingly big change in fuel consumption after I replaced the PCV valve, which i explained in this video:

@@DrewFixIt ok thanks I'm gonna watch it
@@DrewFixIt so yours is diesel
@@plumerault yes my vehicle has the OM642 3.0 Litre Turbo Diesel engine. What engine does your car have? Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt ok, mine is the ML 350 V6 petrol engine
Exactly my problem in Gl450 but unfortunately they change all the bushings for nothing ,,then they said the suspension is the problem.now I am looking to order new one on left side ..can I ask you would you recommend not genuinely Mercedes suspension??
Hi Mate, you have to have deep pockets to purchase genuine Mercedes suspension parts. I personally only use aftermarket parts at about one tenth the cost and do the labour myself. I make these videos to help others DIY themselves. Cheers Drew
please show me move video ? you are wonderful youtuber.
Hi James, thanks for your positive encouragement! What video would you like to see? Cheers Drew
@@DrewFixIt I have follow you channel like change the rear suspension, service for the engine, etc. It wonderful information to me, and save me a lot money to give northwest Sydney are Mercedes Dealers, do you believe one dealer charged me to change one ABS sensor aus$2250? Thank you your information!
@@JamesLee-dr3nq I want to say that I am in shock with the Mercedes dealer charging you so much, however I am not surprised as I hear similar stories all too often. Unfortunately Mercedes dealers think that a dealership is a licence to print money as opposed to genuinely offering good service. I will keep making videos from the most simplest to quite complex, whatever I do on my cars I will film!! Cheers Drew
