  • At the far north eastern tip of the British mainland you'll find John O'Groats, the community that embraces End to Enders setting off for distant Lands End or arriving exhausted after the challenge of a lifetime. Named after the Dutch ferryman Jan de Groot, this tiny settlement boasts stunning views to Orkney and Stroma as well as vertiginous seabird laden cliffs at Duncansby Head and the unforgettable Stacks of Duncansby.
    In this film you will learn about the JoG Development Trust's initiatives from Andrew Mowat (proprietor of the Seaview Hotel) in addition to the history of the First and Last Shop as told by Walter Mowat. You will also meet Teresa and Rebecca Wymer, the proud owners of Stacks, the best Deli and Coffee House in the far north.
    John O'Groats is also an essential stop on any NC500 journey as well as a great base to explore the unique county of Caithness. Relax and unwind to the rhythms of the Pentland Firth.

    I stayed for 2 months on Puffin Croft in John O Groats as a volunteer a few years ago, and I felt in love with John O Groats, the beautiful area and the very kind people. Can't wait to return someday.

    I worked up in Caithness from 1986 to 1990 and fell in love with the place, i've travelled a lot with my career and in all the World, Caithness holds a place in my heart. I even popped back last year but didn't get as far as John o' Groats, but wandered Thurso, Scrabster and Castletown - then off up to Lerwick for the Tall Ships Race...

      Yes, there's something special about Caithness. Not everyone gets it though.

    In 2009 the Seaview Hotel served the best - and I mean the hands-down best - chicken curry I've had anywhere in the world. That alone was worth the walk from Land's End.

    Having walked to John O'Groats from Lands End, it was a disappointment. But on the bright side It's wasn't as bad as Lands End. You forgot to mention the ice cream palour! The woman was right about LEJOGer just wanting a cuppa, the Roads End Cafe, a great brew!!

    I'm hoping to visit John O Groats very soon. Is there a boat which could take me to the Orkney Island for a visit?

    • @TravelObscurer
      @TravelObscurer  3 роки тому

      The John O'Groats ferry is passenger only and normally booked as part of a day tour as otherwise there is no onward transport when the boat arrives in Orkney (full details on their website). The nearest car ferry is a few miles down the coast at Gills Bay. The Pentland Ferries route takes around an hour to get to St Margaret's Hope on Orkney.

      @@321scully Not aware of any cash machines in JOG but the currency in Scotland is the same (pound sterling) as the rest of the UK. The notes you receive from cash machines in England and Scotland are different but accepted anywhere.

    The northern tip of Scotland is 270 miles further north at Unst in the Shetland isles. You mean the northern tip of mainland Scotland. Please don't discount our island communities.

    We visited last month whilst doing the NC500. It was very busy which we didn't expect out of season. When talking about re-investing money in the area though, can someone please use some to upgrade the 🚻 toilets. I can only describe them as "Grim".
    Not only do they need a good clean, they really need a good upgrade.

    • @TravelObscurer
      @TravelObscurer  2 роки тому +1

      Definitely something they need to look into as part of the improvements.
