    I started grooming my Scottie almost 2 years ago when all the groomers in my area were forced to shut down. I really wish this video was around then! 😆 I continue to do it myself because groomers tend to make her look more like a schnauzer. The instructions and tips you give are fantastic! I can’t wait to try them. You’re obviously very skillled, because this is NOT easy. 😁

      I hope it was useful for you! I agree, that most groomers go to for terriers is the schnauzer look, so hopefully this will help them make our beloved scotties more scottish 😋If you have any questions and need help, don't hesitate to ask!

    GREAT video and instruction. I LOVE Scotties. I have a 6 1/2 year old sweetie named Piper. She is black her predecessor was a male Wheaten Scottish Terrier named, Mr. McTavish. I just don't understand why they are not more popular, they are such great dogs. NICE work, SWEET CALM voice!!! I have been grooming all my dogs for over 30 years all except my Standard Poodle, Tiger Lily!!!

    Brilliant videos, and so helpful! We have been blessed recently with an 18-month-old Scottie named Robbie who was rehomed with us a couple of months ago. He was very scruffy when we got him, but we have not been successful in getting him a groomer. Out of desperation we bought clippers and at the moment he's a work in progress. He's not as patient as Daisy(!) so we're taking it a bit at a time. We're getting there and are most appreciative of your excellent videos!

    I do have a Scottie. But in the summer I feel that with all the walks taken fleas as well as ticks might be a problem. No I don't give parasite monthly pills at least only for the extra hot times. I do a shorter trim. She's beautiful the same. I do not walk her in mid afternoon when heat is at the hottest time. A shade back yard is a help.

      I use a 30 blade with a 2 gc, it's my go to for terrier trims. Depending your guard comb (plastic/metal) they sit on a 30/40 or 10. The rest of the numbers have their own comb of teeth to help create the length of coat it leaves behind.

    I’m about to learn. I should have already done it. Covid has made dog grooming near impossible to obtain for my dogs here in NV. I also don’t trust groomers with my dogs safety, not to mention the way many of them do my dogs just looks shabby in my option. It’s hard to search to find a groomer and then pay a fortune for a result you’re not even completely happy with. The last groom we got was so bad I’ve just had to let my dogs grow out following it. Thanks for the great video. Loved the explanation of each part of the dog. The dog looks wonderful! What size blades will I need and where do you recommend getting the tools your using? One person said the toenails are very hard to snip. Which tool is better the snippers or the one that grinds them down? I have 2 Scotties, a male black and a female wheaten. My little male isn’t as agreeable as my little female. Any tips or advice you can give me for getting him to be more cooperative and not to nip me? His biggest issue is his toenails and feet. I’ve considered just using a soft muzzle. What are your thoughts on these for Scotties? Thanks again for any and all advise you can offer me- I’m determined to solve this issue once and for all - My babies need to be groomed properly. Scotties are too beautiful to look like mine have the past few months. Thanks again -
    Edit- I just found your link to your tools. Thanks so much for it! I felt like I hit the jackpot! :)

    • @Dognormousllc
      @Dognormousllc  2 роки тому +1

      I'm glad you found the link, I try to list everything I'm using there. As for getting him over his fear of his toes, that's going to take some time and it may never happen. Scotties are notorious for being a bit particular of their feet. You can totally soft muzzle, and the biggest trick is that you stop holding the paw when they stop fighting. If they yank or bite and you give up, they know they can escape the situation with those actions. Be slow, feed treats if they take it, a lick mat with peanut butter or some other yummy treat while you stroke their toes, anything to keep them calm during the process. It will be a very slow process and it might be a single toe nail trim a day for a little while. I also find that taking them out of their space (the floor) is a good way of letting them know, it's time for yummy snacks and grooming. Always end the process is a calm happy state, before you get frustrated. You have the luxury of coming back to the process in a few hours or next day. Good luck 💕

      @@Dognormousllc I sure will let ya know! Thank you for your great videos! You really do explain things very well.I’ve ordered some of those Wahl combs, too! I already have an Andis trimmer so I wanted to make sure they were compatible. It is corded, but it isn’t horribly loud. I would love to have one of those cordless ones you’re using, so maybe somewhere down the road I can invest in one of those as well. I bought mine to groom our big dog (chow mix) who wouldn’t allow a groomer near her, only me. And I’m definitely going to take your advice on those little toenails, too! The groomers they’ve gone to have all said they both do pretty well, besides his issue about his feet. So, they’ve had a little experience with groomers, which was my goal for them to give them some experience in that regard. I probably won’t start the toenail part just yet until I first try to trim them and begin straightening them back up. I hope I can get their little skirts to look right again. The last groomer they went to cut them so short I nearly cried! They honestly looked like they had on SHORT tutus- I kid you not! smh My baby girl is such a cutie too (wheaten) and I just couldnt believe what he did to her. She honestly had different lengths all over her body and in very odd places too! I kid you not! He did them as fast as he possibly could and did little to no scissor work on them at all. I had to get out my scissors and even her up to make her look better. I’ve had such a hard time finding grooming for them through COVID! It’s been a literal nightmare having puppies during this time! Even vet care has been near impossible! So, Why have I waited so long to just do this?! I do not know. I honestly couldn’t bring myself to take them back to the last guy. He very obviously didn’t want to do them. I’ve just been letting them grow back out in the interim. So, I really heard you on your video, when you said that if you make a mistake, hair will grow back. I think that one statement you made coupled with my bad experience just helped me make my mind up. Thanks for that! I think I just needed a tiny nudge to admit that fact to myself. I mean my dogs already had a bad groom and it’s growing out right before my very eyes. Ive even found myself wondering if just the stress of changing groomers so much wasn’t even worse for them than a bad groom. And so, yeah, Ive just been hardheaded about this decision and to be honest I’m not even sure why anymore! So for what it’s worth! Thanks for that little nudge of truth (I needed it) and for your terrific advice, as well. Have a great night. 🙂

      Hello again. Well, I’m learning. I’ve groomed both of my Scotties once (all except toenails) and they turned out pretty good. Well, except their feet aren’t beveled as close as Daisys due to their nails needing trim. I’m gonna get their nails done, so then I can work more on their feet. My boys pads need the hair trimmed there too so what blade do you use there? Both dogs did pretty well so I’m feeling more confident, anyway. Everyone said they looked great too so that was very encouraging as well- haha The Wahl blades worked great! I used them over a 10 blade.
      I have a few questions tho. How do you trim the face between the eyes? I used thinning sheers but it just doesn’t look as neat as Daisy’s. Maybe I’m just nervous working there, I don’t want to shave off part of their eyebrows lol so I’m nervous to use the clippers there as well, but I’m thinking I may have to - to get that clean look. Also, Do you use a dremel and if so what size for Scottie nails? Is it a certain model or grit that you prefer? I was puzzled when I was reading about them about what exactly I needed for my dogs. My boy’s nails are black and real hard. My girl is a Wheaton so hers are lighter with some black - I’m soon going to order a pet dremel and begin working on learning this part. Sure hope I can get my little guy to at least tolerate it. My girl doesn’t mind her nails as much so she’s more cooperative. :) Also how do you do your sanitary trims? Do you have any videos showing this part? I’m nervous around the ‘sensitive parts’. Don’t want to hurt them. :) Thanks again for all of your help and advice.

      You sure can! If your terrier doesn't need the skirt, then off it goes. Just keep in mind that your beautiful southern California sun can be a bit intense, so you'll want enough coat left on so that way the skin is protected from sunburn and the body temperature is protected from heat stroke.

      Scotties can be finicky. I would suggest working with him at home, brush his beard and feed some treats. Hold his paw and wiggle his toes with some incentives to him get over his nervousness. Scotties who are nervous can be a very dangerous groom, their little legs are so close to their adorable little faces and one bite can take a groomer out of job for life, so we tend to be very protective of our limbs. I hope he finds a groomer who can help him and he can get over his nerves to enjoy a spa day he absolutely deserves 💕

    What size blade are you using also on the Andis? or does that even matter with the guard comb?

    • @Dognormousllc
      @Dognormousllc  2 роки тому +1

      There are two types of guard combs, plastic, which will require a 40 or a 10 under it and the metal which require a 30 or a 10 under it. The blade underneath your guard comb will give you different finished lengths. The 10 blade will leave what I believe is 2 mm extra on the guard comb length. On my terriers, the 2 gc (10 mm) is my go to length for body work. I always have a 30 blade underneath, if I were to use a 10 blade, I would have a body coat of 12 mm. Hope that helps!
