11:33 that move you love was actually popularized in kpop by taemin’s own group, SHINee in their song Sherlock 10 YEARS AGO in 2012. it’s how the song starts. Taemin drops a lot of references to SHINee and their legacy throughout all his solo stuff.
it’s a running joke within the group that they “plagiarize” each other in their solo work by dropping all these references and callbacks.
even in the promotional pictures for this specific album, taemin wore a torn-up tattered version of the same exact outfit he wore during SHINee’s “everybody” in 2013 ☺️
"Idea" is the third part of Taemin's Never Gonna Dance Again album. This song is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
As mentioned before, Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
Taemin pronounces Idea the way you hear him saying it because he is pronouncing it like the Greek word idéa, and not like the English pronunciation. The song is based on the Greek philosopher Plato’s theory of Ideas. Plato believed that an "Idea" is an ultimate reality. Every form has an idea, an image, or standard set for it and Plato believed that these ideas were eternal. For example, when talking about a human, everyone has an image, an ideal type of human according to Plato and once defined that description or thought is constant and never changing.
In the song Teamin is disagreeing with Plato's theory and he is saying that the world is not ruled by one ultimate definition of something or that there isn't only one voice. Taemin is saying he has many voices and thoughts influencing him. If he were to conform to only one way of doing something -- i.e., if he listened to everyone who told him there was only one way to be a Kpop Idol and he needed to do everything the traditional cookiecutter way -- then that would be like killing his spirit and everything that makes him who he is. Hence the lines in the song that say "Killing me softly."
Fun fact: The female voice you hear saying "Killing me softly" is BoA. She is a solo artist also under SM Entertainment, and she is Taemin's highly respected senior who debuted with SM in 2000 at the age of 13 and, now after more than 20 years, she is known as one of the senior-most members of the industry. BoA is legend. To see what kind of influence BoA has had on the industry and why it is so fitting that she was included on this song, check out her recent "202020" documentary which was created as part of her 20th anniversary celebrations.
Some have said, and I have to agree, that "Idea" is a metaphor for the way Taemin sees his career. He loves what he does, almost to the point of obsession -- like "my messiah" he is drawn to it and can't help worship it -- he practically needs to dance and perform to survive. But, at the same time, it pretty much controls his life and living as an Idol means everything he does is done in the public eye and he will never be able to live a normal life -- his "dangerous dream" that is engulfing him and "swallowing him" up. The stress and constant demand for perfection he feels may be slowly "Killing me softly," etc.
I particularly like the verse in "Idea" that says, "The blue light, When you and I face each other, Stained in it, All one's feelings, It's an infinite range, In my world, Most dazzling,The absolute value of you, My my IDEA." These lines seem to be talking about Taemin's fans. SHINee's fan color is pearl aqua blue, so the blue light you see in the MV and the blue light he talks about in the lyrics of "Idea," makes me think he is referring to the impact and influence the fans have had on everything he has done in his career. And although he loves and appreciates us, it has not come without a few sacrifices and negative aspects as well. The mutual love and respect between Taemin and the fans also has added a lot of extra pressure on him because he always wants to give people his absolute best and he is constantly trying to live up to an impossible standard of self-imposed flawlessness.
So with every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker than the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed to the point he was suffering from stockholm syndrome; he fell in love with the person/criminal (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is essentially inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. So, in other words, even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself as he pushes himself in his pursuit of perfection) he still can't help but love the criminal (i.e. his career) and allow them/it to continue to cause him to suffer, etc. :D "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need to be perfect, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
So that is why his choreography keeps getting more and more intense. And it is all designed to help tell the song's story. Well seeing as a few months into Taemin's enlistment he ended up transferring from the military band to conscripted public service duties outside of the military due to an increase in his anxiety and depression becoming worse. I would say military service didn't work well for him. Which is why Taemin's enlistment period was extended about 6 months because of his transfer of jobs. He was originally enlisted as part of the military band -- which his fellow member Key served in when he was enlisted. I think Taemin thought the military band would be a way to keep his connection to music. However, the change in his regular routine was a little too much for him. Plus, he was an extremely high-profile soldier, so he felt a lot of pressure with everyone's high expectations of him. So, yes, I think it's safe to say he probably feels a little lost without his regular idol routine.

As a long term SHINee fan I have been happily shocked by Tae's evolution from Dancer Goofball Maknae to the most cerebral and intellectual member of the group (and SHINee's Key is ridiculously smart himself, so that's a high bar). Still a goofball, though, especially when around his members

Taemin is the King. God
Taemin is the most distinctive and different K-pop artist out there as a solo artist. He is constantly praised for his high level of performance, dance, musicality, and artistry. He is admired by critics, the public, and many idols and industry. No title song by him sounds like the other. In fact, it does not stick to a genre that has made people define its musical genre, although many critics point it out as "T-pop" since in terms of musical sound it is very creative and not "mainstream" ADVICE is a clear example with the sound of the piano. And that's part of what makes Taemin the greatest soloist of all time in kpop history. please more reactions about him.

You're kind of on the right track. In order to fully grasp what this means, you have to have more knowledge of Taemin's history and what he has told us in interviews, VLIVEs and such. There are a lot of references from those sources in the song.
We first get the sense that Taemin is feeling very conflicted about his dual personalities (celebrity Taemin vs. real Taemin) in his MV "Press Your Number". In that MV he also plays both a criminal and victim. We see this play out again in "Want" where Taemin represents Lucifer with dual meanings in the lyrics (if you ever react to that I'll explain -- very deep) and "Famous" shows us the pitfalls of celebrity life and how it can change a person's values if they get swallowed up in the pride and glamourous lifestyle of a celebrity. Many times Taemin revealed that he's not sure which is the real Taemin - celebrity or non-celebrity. He gets conflicted.
That brings us to This storyline where he equates this conflict as Stockholm syndrome with "Criminal", where we see the bad ("criminal") part of celebrity life trying to control the authentic real Taemin ("victim"). As I said before, it's a love/hate relationship.
Now with "IDEA" we have the concept of Plato's Theory of Forms which states that any created being (form) cannot create itself. Only an outside power/being can be the creator and only that creator can make perfection -- a Messiah. This philosophy fits in perfectly with Taemin's Christian worldview. Since Plato was Greek, Taemin uses the Greek pronunciation of the words, "IDEA" and "Messiah".
Along with the visuals (Hell = "Criminal"; Heaven = "Victim" reborn/resurrected/perfected) the lyrics also illustrate his thinking. In the first two stanzas we see the victim awakening to the realization of the fact that there's something he's grasping for but is not quite understanding it yet. It's an inkling of an awareness/voices whispering of something more in him, this "IDEA" of self he's pursuing. This "IDEA" is his Messiah. It will reveal all if he can only grasp firmly onto it, "It drives me crazy" he says because he's on the tip of understanding and that fact is "Killing me softly".
Taemin says, "I can't see; I can't hold; Define me anew before I know it; Everything in me doubles". This "IDEA" is elusive and causes him to think in the duality of "criminal" and "victim". It causes pain. He goes on to reiterate how elusive this "IDEA" is, but then you see him plead, "The moment that made me believe; Throw me beyond that." In other words, the fact that he now believes that he may have an inkling to the answer, push him over the edge and give it to him straight.
It's this stanza that cements it for me after reading it again and again:

When you and I face each other
Stained in it
All one's feelings
It's an infinite range
In my world
Most dazzling
The absolute value of you
My my IDEA
You are you are you are (killing me)
Couple of things you need to know. "The blue light" represents the blue-green signature color for SHINee World (SHINee's fandom and SHINee itself) Despite the fact that Taemin is a renown solo artist and member of SuperM, he began as a member of SHINee in 2008. He calls SHINee his "home". He is most comfortable and secure when with SHINee. During an interview in 2019 with IHeart Radio, Taemin explained the way he thinks of being and performing with SHINee and it's almost identical to the next lines: "Flowing on me; The blue light; When you and I face each other; Stained in it; All one's feelings; It's an infinite range; In my world; Most dazzling; The absolute value of you (SHINee and SHINee World). To sum it up, I think this is Taemin saying, I'm not this two-dimensional character of either celebrity or non-celebrity. I'm SHINee, the whole package with my SHINee hyungs. I'm all of those characters wrapped up into one shining being - SHINee Taemin. That is the perfect scenario for him; the grand "IDEA" and revelation. He doesn't have to worry about which is which. His Messiah made him who he is: one person who is part of SHINee, a soloist, and member of SuperM. All of these entities make up who he really is whether celebrity or non-celebrity. They are the sum total of the person Taemin, created in the image of Messiah. ("image" in the Bible doesn't mean "looks like". It means "as a representative of". Humans are to be representatives of God on Earth.
The last stanza mentions, "The night that cut you out of me" was his last night of doubt and "I finally opened my eyes," dawning realization of the truth = he is TAEMIN.

Taemin use girls as dancers most of the time. Maybe bc they are more smoother than the boys bc you know how smooth Taemin dance are.
Actually I think it's deeper than that. He always says he wants to break the stigma of what male/female should be, should look, should wear, should dance, whatever.
The female dancers - or what Shawols love to call as taemin's girl squad - are there to emphasize no such limitation for gender in art. Women can do and look as fabulous as men in dancing exact same choreography. They can be just as fierce and strong, then in the other hand taemin also shows that a man can dance as smooth as female dancers. A man still can look sexy, intense and badass even when he doesn't dance fast and hard hitting.
That's what I love abt taemin. Female dancers for him are exactly what they do, they dance, most of the time even with same choreography. They're not background accessories or to beautify scenes, taemin never needs them just to make the mv look sexy or erotic, lol, he knows he's more than enough than we can handle.

Taemin is the best! He has his own vision about music and dance and insists on it (as he says in Advice, no way but "my way"). Funny thing is Taemin doesn't listen to Kpop himself (lately, he listens to these cozy-core scandi bands - so strange). I think he wants to set trends in Kpop not follow them - which is his prerogative after SHINee's success and years of working so hard (since he was 14 yo) for SM. He's enlisted in the army for the next year and a half. Knowing Taemin and his incredible ambitions, I hope he's imagining crazy new stuff for his fans to enjoy when he's not defending South Korea!

You actually had a pretty good idea of what the song is about. A bit of a long explanation, so bear with me please.
IDEA is based on Plato's Theory of Forms or *IDEAS* - often capitalized & pronounced as *ee-deas* originally in Greek. It translates to "forms" or "idea." That's why Taemin says "ee-dea" instead of "idea" in the MV. Here's an analysis of the lyrics & the MV with a bit of my own interpretation:
So, Criminal was based on stockholm syndrome. But instead of describing a 2nd person or a lover, he portrayed himself as both the criminal & the victim, depicting an abusive mindset or a toxic relationship with himself (his inner self). Whether we realize it or not, I'm sure we've all somewhat had those moments in life where 2 or more different sides of ourselves made us a slave to the "criminal & victim" nature of our own thoughts & actions. For Taemin specifically, this can refer to a number of things: his love for dancing/singing, idol lifestyle, his artistic career in general, etc. In the MV, Taemin shows 2 different personas/"egos" of himself. One is trying to evolve & create a new identity, but the "criminal Taemin" is "brainwashing" & sweet-talking this new "ego" to keep him a prisoner within himself as Taemin is more familiar/comfortable with his current persona/identity.
Now before diving into IDEA, let's delve a little bit into Plato's Theory of Forms. I'm gonna assume that you aren't familiar with the concept. Otherwise, feel free to skip this part. It's a philosophical theory/concept that states that the physical world is not the "real" world. Instead, there's an alternate, ultimate reality that exists beyond our physical realm: the spiritual realm.
The physical world is the material stuff we see & interact with everyday. This realm is always changing & is imperfect. *Perfection cannot exist in this realm.* The spiritual realm, on the other hand, is the perfect, "ideal" version of the imperfect physical realm which is only a shadow or an image of the true reality of the spiritual realm. Plato called this spiritual realm the *Realm of IDEAS* (a.k.a "Forms" or "Ideals").
So what exactly are these IDEAS/forms? They are the non-physical essence of all things. They are abstract, perfect, & unchanging concepts or ideals that exist in this perfect spiritual Realm of IDEAS. These concepts can be anything: Redness, Roundness, Beauty, Goodness, Justice, etc.
So how about a specific individual object like a red dress, a round ball, a beautiful man, or a good person? They are simply just different examples of the IDEAS/forms & reside imperfectly in the physical realm.
Think of a circle, for example. You draw one. I draw one. If we compare, there will be a number of differences & imperfections. They may have different sizes, shapes, colors, etc. So the 2 imperfect circles reside in our physical realm. However, even with such imperfections, there's something that unites them together that makes us agree that what we drew were both circles. This "it" factor is the IDEA of Circle which resides in the spiritual realm.
With that being said, Taemin's IDEA is basically about his new "ego" chasing after his IDEA to become his perfect, "ideal" self & break free from the shackles of his former "ego." As the lyrics go:
*A small reflection made by reason,
Growing on the instinct,
A dream blooming deep inside,*
So, something as "small" as just "reasoning" with himself & "reflecting" about a certain matter made him realize that he's flawed. If we are to draw a connection to act 1, this "certain matter" could be referring to the struggle between his 2 personas. Throughout the Criminal MV, Taemin had been handcuffed, & the IDEA MV starts off with the 2 "criminal & victim" sides of himself in an interrogation room. Another small detail is that his ending T-pose in the Criminal choreo is also the starting pose of the IDEA choreo. The all-white room is heaven according to Taemin & the MV director. In the beginning, he went there despite still being alive due to the false euphoria he was experiencing in the stockholm syndrome relationship. That's why all the heavenly beings, portrayed by the face paintings/luxarious fashion, were looking at him strangely as he was undead. Hence, the realization that he's living a lie & is imperfect sparked his new "ego's" thirst for perfection which "grew on instinct" & became a "dream."
*The shadow is holding the night & getting darker,
Inside my heart,
Under, under, under (2x)
Beautiful silhouettes,
Sweet voices,
You make me crazy,
You are my messiah,

Within his mind, Taemin has an IDEA of "Taemin" or an image of what it means to be the perfect "Taemin." This is the silver terminator blob that appears before him. His former "ego" - "the shadow" - is getting stronger & trying to crush this new "ego" that's bubbling under the surface ("holding the night & getting darker"). But deep "under" within himself, his new "ego" sees the images/glimpses of his perfect self: "beautiful silhouettes, sweet voices." He sees this concept of "Taemin" as his savior ("messiah") & believes that he can willingly achieve this perfection & become strong enough to escape the former "ego's" clutches. However, he's unable to reach it despite continuing to chase after it, making him go "crazy." It "kills him softly." So, is it really his "messiah?" The irony is that deep down, he questions it too but refuses to acknowledge it.
*I can't even see or grab,
Before I know it, I redefine myself,
Everything in me is doubled,
Making me take the hottest breath,*
He can't "see or grab" this abstract concept of the perfect "Taemin," but unconsciously, he begins to "redefine" himself/his flaws by slowly developing his new "ego" to get closer to perfection. So now, there's the former "criminal" persona & the glimpses of the new, evolved "victim" persona within himself ("everything is doubled"). This struggle between the 2 "egos" makes him excited/agitated - "take the hottest breath."
*Under, under, under,
Beautiful silhouettes,
Sweet voices,
You make me crazy,
You are my messiah,
You are my me- (killing me)
My IDEA (you are) (2x)

My IDEA (2x)
The dangerous dream that swallowed me,

Finally in the 2nd chorus, Taemin addresses the "you" throughout the song as his IDEA or the perfect "Taemin." The forest scene before/during the chorus is his new "ego" that's trapped by the former "ego" - depicted by the hell 🔥 scene. His new persona believes that his thirst for perfection is "proven" or justified by the existence of this IDEA of "Taemin" within himself even though it's "killing him softly," as shown by the utter madness of this scene in the MV.
*Beyond the limit of realization,
Your shadow I finally found,
At the moment when I've become to trust everything invisible,
I throw myself into the ideal,
When the blue light flowing on me,
Faces you & me,
All the colored emotions inside,
Become the unlimited range,
The brightest presence in my world,
The absolute value, you*
So, he has managed to grasp at something beyond his physical limit - the "shadow" of his IDEA - & immerses himself into this "ideal." In the MV, he's sitting on the staircase to heaven in this scene. This is the limbo in between heaven & hell where IDEA exists. The "blue light" in the lyrics represents a higher being that's beyond human understanding. This higher being enlightens Taemin ("faces you & me") , & all the struggles & confusions ("colored emotions") from his 2 "egos" come to an end. They merge & become one with his IDEA in the spiritual realm. The merging into his IDEA is shown in the black background scene around min 7:05 in your video. Now he has "unlimited" potential/possibilities as he has become his one & only perfect self ("the brightest presence . . . the absolute value, you").
*My, my IDEA,
You are, you are, you are,

My IDEA (you are) (2x)

(My IDEA)

But after becoming one with his IDEA in the spiritual realm, his new "ego" realizes that he cannot achieve this perfection in the physical world which then again "kills him softly," & the struggle & chaos starts all over again with his 2 "egos" in the spiritual realm. This is portrayed in the platform scene with the intense choreo/lightning & the hell 🔥 scene in the final chorus.
*(Killing me softly, killing me softly),
On the night I cut you out from my heart,
(Killing me softly, killing me softly),
Finally I open the [new] eyes.*
In the end, Taemin's new "ego" is able to accept the fact that he cannot achieve his "ideal" self & reaches a middle ground in between heaven & hell. He "cuts out" IDEA from his heart & emerges into an evolved "Taemin" that is more complete than his former "ego." Though he's still imperfect in a sense, he's happy with where he's right now & abandons his former "ego." This is the final scene in the MV where he's in the blue outfit, looking up - again, in the same T-pose with which he ended Criminal & started IDEA - taking a deep breath (though this is due to the intense dance choreo, it does add something exquisite to the storyline that Taemin has created for his comeback). Even though, the new "Taemin" has learned to not be so obsessed with perfection, he's still striving to reach that IDEA or at least get as close to perfection as he possibly can which is seen in this ending scene as he looks towards the sky. After all, as human beings we always strive to improve ourselves & aim to become the absolute best version of ourselves despite knowing that we are flawed. This is how we grow & mature. Hence, it's the concept of rebirth that Taemin mentioned is the backbone of act 2.

Love your reactions!! For Taemin, he always puts his all into the vision of his comeback so I'd recommend starting with the MV first, then lyric video and dance video. Then you get the full impact of his vision on first impression.

@@rjkpop don't forget to check on his live performances/concerts. Taemin is a beast on stage. His solo concerts always sold out and known as one of the best. You think he's fabulous in MVs? Wait till you see him in live performance setting. He's untouchable there. There are so many reasons why he's called as Legendary Male Solo Artist in Korea.

To watch him do live this song with this level of choreography effortlessly is one thing. and another thing is that there is new variation at the end of the song. So EPIC!!!

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. So glad u looked into him. Now I can learn with u. =0] Jimin is pals with Taemin. They have a lot in common i hear. They also did a dance together. So i slowly started to listen to his songs. I love Sayonara Hitori by him. It's beautiful. Hope u checked it out. On 1st listen I did not like Idea. Basically I had the same reaction to this as to Danger. It was not catchy. I do think he a good dancer and he cute. But this song was not for me. Now a month or 2 after its not bad. The song is growing on me. To me he is saying his persona of Taemin his idea is trying to kill him. He is struggling internally. New Taemin bias here. Looking forward to learning more.
