- Zamazenta was the laughing stock of Sword and Shield, and then going into the next Pokemon games it was intentionally made weaker. And then it won a tournament. Here's how.

Zacian is a restricted legendary that hates Trick Room, so I'm not surprised it wasn't as easy to fit on a team as Incineroar.

likely would have increased it's pickrate, but due to Zacian's then dominant power it wouldn't be that high.
IMO Behemoth Bash should have also used the user's defenese for damage calcs
@@rory8182 Maybe in the first formats where Dynamax is legal but when it gets banned Zama would probably be better since it can now pivot safely due to its bulk to another Pokemon or stick on the field just like SV

15:40 its funny how grass has like 5 weakness and yet the tankiest pokemon wants to terastalize into grass
It’s mainly because most of grasses weaknesses are “irrelevant” (Bug? Poison? Ice? Flying?) and it resists two of the hardest types to resist (ground and electric), as well as being immune to the annoying nonsense grass type Pokémon pull off with powders/spores.

@@TaLeng2023 Yes! Weight is an underused stat, not just moves, there are even abilities like heavy metal and light metal or items like heavy ball all about the weight stat! With stuff like fist moves or sound or wind etc getting attention, time for weight too!
@@onebear6504 since we already have Heavy Ball and Float Stone, I think we just need more moves that deal with weight and maybe moves that increase or lower it.
Everyone said Zama would be great with Body Press even back in gen 8 and it's good to see it actually making good on that claim despite the nerfs.
Zamazenta would probably be better than zacian in sword and shield if they gave it body press. Zama with body press feels like playing a zacian that is somehow harder to make leave the field.
@@raysay1818 honestly not really. Zama didn't really match well into the meta, even with Body Press it'd have still been walled hard by Calyrex and Wide Guard, and in Dynamax meta Max Ground attacks were very common due to the defense boost they provide (on top of having a neutrality to Max Airstream).
It would have been way less bad surely, but still people would have much rather ran Zacian or Caly-S or Kyogre instead.

@@worldiefeard8396 these are all very fair points. Though I do still feel that Zamazenta with body press, while maybe not better than zacian exactly, it would still be up there. Like Zama got nerfed. it hit harder and was bulkier in sw/sh. it wasn't the biggest nerf but like the treasures of ruin got nerfed 5-10 points and it mattered enough to stop chi-yu from being ENTIRELY busted. so idk Zamazenta with 5 more points in both defenses 10 more in attack with +1 defense on *every* switch in with stab body press and boosted behemoth bash could be pretty threating and could change the meta accordingly. It's hard to say with these things because it's full on alternate universe speculation but it's crazy to think Zama was potentially always this close to the spot light it just needed the one tool it should of had from the start. Body press seems perfectly built for Zamazenta and then for some reason they didn't give it to the poor dog.
@@worldiefeard8396 Why would those stop Zamazenta from attacking when body press is singular so wide guard won't block it, max ground boosts special defense while Zama is faster than most of its users and being neutral to airstream isn't bad?

it’s bizarre to me that they didn’t give behemoth bash the defense-scaling property back in gen 8, especially since they didn’t give zamazenta body press
Honestly, I would have expected both. def scaling Behemoth Bash and Body Press in Sword and Shield.
That and king’s shield for the absolute most fitting candidate for the move. If only for thematic purposes.
I thought of the same thing but there is a problem with that. Both moves Behemoth Blade and Behemoth Bash are basically Iron Head that changes to these signature moves after both get their crowned form. Iron head is a physical attack but then suddenly becoming a defense scaling move might get confusing maybe that's why. I might be wrong as well.
@@teno777i cant imagine how broken it will be if zamazenta has body press, defense scaling behemoth bash and kings shield, having protect is nice, but having protect that can lower attack of a mon that make contact( specially with zamazenta's defense), now that would be something
@@jadeyumol4811 Zacian basically already had that, except for literally every single move it wanted to use. It really only loses out on King’s Shield but that doesn’t really matter if the opponent is outspend and OHKO’d anyways

When the doggo legendaries were first revealed I instantly knew I was gonna pick Shield version just for Zamazenta, and was subsequently baffled as the other one turned out to be both way more popular AND ridiculously stronger. It feels so good to see my favorite pup finally getting the spotlight he deserves :)

I always was more of a Zamazenta fan just because like you said, the sheild just works into its design better imo, so seeing it get some time in the spotlight competitively makes me very happy :)

I'm glad someone brought up that Sword of Ruin actually increases the damage of Body Press. Body Press is really weird that way, despite calculating damage with your defense, it gets its damage cut by burn despite burn supposedly cutting your attack stat in half, and also gets its damage buffed by Choice Band despite the description literally saying that it boosts attack. This tells me that Sword of Ruin, burns, and the choice items don't modify your stats at all and are instead a multiplier added to the formula somewhere for physical moves.
Pokémon really is a very weird, very complex game.

Huh, I even checked the Japanese entry just to make sure. Every shield entry for Hero of Many Battles Zacian refers to Zacian as Zamazenta’s older sister.

@@teno777 my bad, I should’ve said that the english, japanese, and chinese entries say so. However, I did check the other languages on bulbapedia, and every language uses older sister except the Romance languages which do use a feminine noun (however they are gendered languages, so that point is moot) and some word with a similar root to fraternity. Since it’s just the Romance languages that do this, I think it’s a cultural thing to get across the specific nuance, but I don’t speak French, Spanish, or Italian, so I have no clue.

16:53 - It’s so crazy how we are hearing you say this when last generation I think pretty much everyone would have said the opposite. All it took was Zacian getting neutered and Zamazenta receiving Body Press, because the fault of Zam’s ability not helping on the special side still exists, AND Zamazenta got nerfed alongside Zacian, with Body Press being its only actual buff.
Zamazenta's development to stardom really shows that base stats aren't always everything that determines whether a Pokemon is good or bad; it's also what tools a Pokemon has and how effectively it can use them.
Behemoth Bash should've had the same mechanic as Body Press even back in SS.

It's my favorite gen 8 Mon! I really like how big it actually is in crowned form! It has big broad shoulders for the shield akin to a brave tank in the front lines being a hero, a noble knight, and a bro that protects everyone else plus a really cool design all over! Everything comes together so so well!
Something no one talks about: zacians nerf to attack meant it couldn't ohko opposing zacian anymore. It's a max 97% roll. You used to be able to spec to live a behemoth blade from opposing zacian, go second, and one shot it back. Not anymore!
The cherry on top would have been for the winner of that tournament to be Alfonso! He never doubted Zamazenta!

As a Zamazenta enjoyer who has very little knowledge whatsoever of the competitive scene, watching this video felt like a very educational tragicomedy history on the big doggo.
