As much as I love 212 and its different editions. I started to love more (like more more) expensive 212 cousins from BeQuiet. Damn I'm in love with Dark Rock and Dark Rock Pro.
I'm using the Dark Rock 2 with my 5800x and it's pretty good. Maxes out at about 80° after 10 mins of a simulated 100% load and settles in the mid-60's when gaming. Decently quiet too. I will say though that installation was a bitch.
Running a 212 Evo with a Noctua fan swapped on my Ryzen 5800X. I didn't like the ramping up noise level of the stock fan so I put a much quieter Noctua fan on there even though it actually raised my temps by 2-3 degrees! It still runs cool enough and holds good turbo speeds on all core rendering loads yet is now whisper quiet. Still recommend the 212 though for most people it's fine I just wanted my PC to be as quiet as possible and am extra picky with noise.
2:25 That version of it hasn't available at any Australian stores for at least the past 2 or so years. There's the Hyper T4, Hyper 212 LED Turbo, Hyper 212X, etc etc, which are all poor value vs a Deepcool Gammax GT or a Silverstone AR12.
I run the the Hyper 212 Black with dual silencio fans on my 3900X with PBO turned on. It’s great, I am yet to have issues with temps or noise with my use case which is gaming and photo editing.
I really like this cooler. I was sad when it didn't fit with my new AM4 ryzen. Apparently they made a special bracket you could buy but it was limited supply and by now it's the same price to buy a new one with AM4 supported hardware. I ended up buying an Evo 212 Black edition!
This cooler is iconic. There isn’t a more recognizable cooler on the market and to this day it’s hard to get anything that performs as well for the price - this thing has been in production for so long it can be had frequently on sale or with a rebate for $25 or cheaper.
ive had my hyper 212 evo v1 since 2015 heating a i5-4690 (gpu is 980 superC) and its still going cause i only use it roughly 8 hours a day outta the 40000 hours expetancy of the fan hasnt failed on me it, shud last according to my math at least 13 years for to make it to 40k hours this fan seems fantastic and i would 100% trust it to cooldown a 10+ generation I7 vs my 4th generation I5 cpu, i never overclock so idk how it handles with that, also my dad put my PC together for me and had 0 trouble getting the fan in (i use asrock h97 pro 4), BUT great fucking fan
@1:43 from Arctic... maybe true, but 212 popularity pushes the price often higher than arctic coolers, and people still recommend it over the arctic coolers.
I got the 212 Spectrum last week and installed it on my Ryzen 5 3600. It does an amazing job. I replaced the the RGB fan with a blain black sickleflow fan.
ive been running a 212 evo with my 4790k for years and I havent had any complaints with it. when my friend upgraded to an AIO, he gave me the fan from his 212 evo and while I dont know just how much of an improvement it made, it certainly helps
The crazy thing about this cooler is that the Evo is already an iteration itself, even back in the C2D/Q days the original Hyper 212 was showing up the other coolers. This thing was around long before we sang the praises of the likes of Noctua and Scythe and BeQuiet back when Arctic was still sitting at the top of the pile except for that one really chunky tower either Thermaltake or Thermalright made. It has outlasted multiple CPU generations and sockets. This thing has been around longer than some of the people reading this comment and yet it remains viable after tiny iterations generation after generation.
You used the word chooch.. You are of my people :D I bought a Hyper 212 EVO about 2-3 years ago. Best $25 I ever spent on a cooler. It dropped my noise level down from annoying as hell with an in the box heat sink for my AMD FX 8320 Black edition 120 watt space heater.. err.. processor, but actually ended up dissipating heat too well.. Now my office get's mega hot due to it. I found this video because I want to re-use the 212 Evo in my new build i'm waiting on to ship (Ryzen 5 5600X) and with what your saying coupled with the fact that the 5600X is 65 watt compared to my old 120 watt chip, it'll chooch! Thanks man! Even with my 120 watt chip and it is dynamic overclocked, the fan never really gets loud. I absolutely HATED the install process (I have been dreading it when my new mobo/proc/mem comes in) but in the end, especially since I already have it, it makes it worth the hassel. I have been thinking about replacing the fan, just to what.. I don't want a fan that costs the same as a better cooler because what would be the point in that. Some RGB is nice though.. If anyone has any cheap fan recommendations let me know!
Those air coolers are seriously underestimated, my Deep Cool GT ARGB looks great and comes in for a great price. Shaved something like ~20C off vs the stock cooler which was struggling with my R5 3600.
Also if you have an issue with the fan with the plastic clips, you can change the fan out with pretty much any 120mm fan. Just unscrew the clips from the fan and install your new fan.
I personally have the Hyper 212 EVO V2 myself, and I absolutely love it! Edit: I also have my cooler installed in a push-pull config with two Sickle Flow fans.
I have this on my i7 13700k. Thing works! I built my PC on a budget and wanted to spend the money on the CPU/GPU and find budget cooling solutions that worked. With effective fan placement in the case, thing works well.
My older PC still rocks this exact cooler (i5 2500 stock frequency) and it's crazy to see the very good temperatures. For the new build I'm working on (R5 5600X) I really considered the updated RGB or black versions, but the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240mm AIO was very decently priced, that convinced me to go AIO watercooling. Can't wait to get all the final parts for this PC to build.
I love my Evo v2. I had to upgrade to it because my 4 DIMMs of G.Skill Trident ram was so tall. So glad I did, dropped my temps almost 10 degrees on average.
Great review, but I kinda wish you guys had tested it against the Arctic Freezer 34, Vetroo V5, ID-Cooling SE 914, Pure Rock 2, or some other CPU coolers around the same $30-$40 range. The Hyper 212 is a classic and definitely a good cooler. But it would be nice to see if it is still the best among that budget category.
I spent $20 on an adapter for a 3600 AM4 socket. It forces you to align the cooler airflow vertically in the case rather than from front to back. I ended up spending $100 on a Noctua instead. On my older AM3+ system, the EVO 212 did a fantastic job and as mentioned in the video, the price is right.
One thing you forgot to mention is the hieght, its just so perfect. That's also a factor why 120mm coolers are purchased more than 140mm coolers. This hieght difference also factors-in for comparatively lower price.
One thing I love about Cooler Master products are the way the fan clips on to the fins. It's rock sold but still easy to remove for cleaning. I bought a more expensive Be Quiet Dark Rock Slim and I love it but I'm not looking forward to trying to unclip the harsh metal wiring holding the fan.
i have the original hyper 212 (non evo??). it has fan mounting brackets that screws onto the top of the cooler. it's easily 10+ years old and i'm still using it today on a old socket 775 system. keeping a 120w xeon cpu under 40C. fantastic cooler.
Hello; Thank you for all that you guys do. You can check your HVAC system to verify this, that's how I found out. Fans can be up to 20% more efficient pulling than pushing. I have the fan (Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO ) on the rear of the cooler pulling air thru from the front. My temps are usually high 30°s to mid 40°s C. I have an old AMD FX6350 on an ASUS M5A97 R2.0. I use the mobo OC to run at ~3.9-4.2GHz, I don't game, & I run MXLinux 19.4. (I also run an Asus Radeon R7 250 in an old Cooler Master Elite 330.) My case has 2 fans, an Arctic F12 PWM PST CO intake & a Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM exhaust, . W/ a tower cooler like the Cooler Master 212 EVO you may have to add side panels. That will guide the air thru from the front to the back & not from the sides. If needed, you can cut clear plastic, from packaging, into sheets, you need 2. Milk jugs or to-go food trays would work, just to test w/. My cooler is 50mm x 110mm on the sides, yours may be the same, or not. A pair of rubber bands will hold the sides on, or you could try glue or screws. To use screws you need 2 to 4 per side, be sure they will fit between the fins. Be sure you make the holes line up w/ the spaces between the fins. You want the fins to be tight enough on the screws to hold the side covers on. An ice pick (remember those?) will make holes is plastic. To see if yours needs the panels use your PC normally till it gets up to temp. Record the temp. Put the fan on the rear of the cooler, add your sides, test it. You can just use stiff paper for to test it. Use your PC normally till it gets up to temp. Check the temp. Your mileage may vary. So it may not help or it may not help enough to bother w/. It works for me so, hopefully helpful. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!
Hyper 212 series is great. I had Hyper 212X paired with my ancient Fx-6300 and it performs really well compared to stock cooler. The only downside is that the installation is absolutely a nightmare
On another note - If you're allergies are really getting at you, see if your doc can prescribe you 'Avamys'. I sufferered for 25 years+ with terrible hayfever and allergies, and this was the only thing that cleared it up. Hope it helps.
i had to buy the new 212 black fan for my am4 socket but I couldn't waste my beloved classic Evo, so I used the fan as a pull fan and now i have an amazing push pull setup and the temps are just amazing , if you're upgrading from evo to 212 black , you should definitely do that
One think I don't like of the new Hyper 212 EVO V2 is that the back plate is apparently (I may be wrong) made of plastic instead of metal like in this older Hyper 212 EVO. Plastic will bend over time and so will the PCB with possible reliability issues. Also a bending will not give consistent pressure over the thermal pad.
I have Hyper 212 LED Turbo (with red led) cooling down my Ryzen 5 1600, really great performer for its price. But this specific edition of Hyper 212 comes with a catch. This cooler can only mounted horizontally with its stock am4 mounting kit (clip type) and in this orientation, my cooler can't exhaust the heat to outside the case as I use older style case with top mounted PSU and no top ventilation. so, in order to mount the cooler vertically, I made custom mounting bracket based off the included am3 mounting bracket from steel plate, but slightly longer to fit am4 mounting point and use the stock am4 back plate that comes with the motherboard+some plastic spacers and surprisingly it works.
Its awesome that cooler still matters to this day, but at the same time I'm glad I didn't get that instead I bought its clone the Deepcool Gammaxx 400 which its installation on the AMD AM4 Socket is straight forward that uses the official out of the box bracket.
I still have a Hyper 212 for AM3, wanted to reuse it for my Ryzen when I finally upgraded, but CM only sold AM4 brackets for it briefly. Got a Black edition instead, but still holding onto the original in the vain hope I can source a bracket one day for my (now) older AM4 system.
@@Ironraven24 That's because you bought the Hyper 212 EVO V2, I'm talking about the V1 which was made 10 years ago before AM4 existed. The only difference between the V1 and V2 is the retention bracket, which is why it was a shame CM only briefly supported selling AM4 brackets for the V1 since both versions have identical performance.
@@blarghmcblarghson1903 nope i bought the v1 lol i know it existed 10 years ago and it has an am4 compatible bracket now edit: there are also other differences in the v2 such as the installation, the fan it uses, and even the size of the heatsink. @@Ironraven24 Ah, thanks for pointing out the differences between the v1 and v2. That being said, what do you mean you don't know what I was going on about then, if you were aware the 212 was around before AM4? I was talking about having a pre-AM4 box and CM not really committing to forward compatibility since they only offered the upgrade kit to AM4 for a pretty short time. Technically they still offer it, but only in the EU and the shipping charge costs almost 1.5x the price of a whole new cooler for a few grams of metal.
I got myself a 212 Black edition for my rig. I don't have a super high end rig, but it keeps my Ryzen 2600X cooler than the stock cooler. I got it for my brother in laws build (for mid-range work/gaming). It works pretty well. You should check that out. It was easy to install, but it has the wire holder type installation for the fan.
I have a Hyper 212 from 2007 or so, I upgraded my system again in 2019 and this thing still is amazing except for the mounting like you showed, it was impossible to add a IC Graphite cooler pad, had to run to a local computer shop and pray they had stock on some good quality cooler paste
I run a 5800x that I have tuned to run cooler while still providing stock or better performance, and it runs on a Hyper 212 V2 with a BeQuiet! fan, in a BeQuiet! 500dx. Great cooling and nearly 100% silent. Love the combo.
I build PC for myself and for my friends like 20+ years, but this fan is the only one that died BEFORE PC went to retire. So if someone decide to use it, keep an eye on CPU temps, setup MB warning for fan fault (if you have that option in BIOS) or take glass panel to have some visuals.

I re-used mine for a new build and it's still working fine. Had it for 7 years now!
Using the Dark rock 4 pro with the 3800x running at 4.6ghz.... this cooler is a monster.
I have had one of these for several years they really are very good
This guy is very well spoken
I love that Temperature/Decibels charts!
ive had my hyper 212 evo v1 since 2015 heating a i5-4690 (gpu is 980 superC)
and its still going cause i only use it roughly 8 hours a day outta the 40000 hours expetancy of the fan
hasnt failed on me it, shud last according to my math at least 13 years for to make it to 40k hours
this fan seems fantastic and i would 100% trust it to cooldown a 10+ generation I7 vs my 4th generation I5 cpu, i never overclock so idk how it handles with that, also my dad put my PC together for me and had 0 trouble getting the fan in (i use asrock h97 pro 4), BUT
great fucking fan
Currently on my third 212 in a row. Brilliant.
@1:43 from Arctic... maybe true, but 212 popularity pushes the price often higher than arctic coolers, and people still recommend it over the arctic coolers.
The installation on the newer 212 Evo’s are MUCH better than the older ones. Using one on my 7700 and luvin it! Really enjoying the videos on coolers!
Yeah seems like over the years they have been subtly tweaking and slightly refreshing the design's aesthetic
I got one of these in 2012 for my Phenom II X4 965 setup, still running strong, and temps always stayed reasonable.
GOAT cooler. Still using mine after 10 years and two different builds.
This cooler will never get old, as long they keep making adapters for new sockets, I will keep using in my backup build
I wonder how it stacks up to the Deep Cool GAMMAXX 400S and ID-COOLING SE-224-XT as they seem to be the same or cheaper than the Cooler Master cooler.
You might want to tune in soon then!
AMAZING video! helped me decide for my 5800x, thank you!
I have to say I'm really enjoying your content, and I'm looking forward to more.
I just installed V2 of this last night. Works great.
Have the 212 black rgb edition, got it for $25 on sale! Totally worth it! Do recommend if on sale
Ya my i3 10100 doesn’t go above 60c with silent fan speed 100% load.
Those air coolers are seriously underestimated, my Deep Cool GT ARGB looks great and comes in for a great price. Shaved something like ~20C off vs the stock cooler which was struggling with my R5 3600.
I have one from 2012, going strong even now on a Ryzen 3600. One of the best cooling ever made.
Another content from this guy. Good job
Thank you a whole lot for this well-putting together tutorial. I appreciate it.
Thank you for your review just purchased today waiting for Amazon Delivery hope it improves my stock intel cooler was noisy
Very cool video, I don't know why but I wanted to comment and just say great review man.
That intro is dope.. so true!! I love it !!
I spent $20 on an adapter for a 3600 AM4 socket. It forces you to align the cooler airflow vertically in the case rather than from front to back. I ended up spending $100 on a Noctua instead.
On my older AM3+ system, the EVO 212 did a fantastic job and as mentioned in the video, the price is right.
i used a 212 evo when i did my first ever build with a r5 1600X, it was $34.50 CAD then and its still running flawlessly now
One thing you forgot to mention is the hieght, its just so perfect. That's also a factor why 120mm coolers are purchased more than 140mm coolers. This hieght difference also factors-in for comparatively lower price.
i use one for ten years now , incredible cooler , never have a single problem!! let see if it last for others ten years
At this point I think all CPU cooler manufacturers should print something like performance difference compared to Hyper 212 on the CPU cooler box.
Arctic does actually LOL.
This is nice ,do more coolers .
Hello;
Thank you for all that you guys do.
(I also run an Asus Radeon R7 250 in an old Cooler Master Elite 330.)
My case has 2 fans, an Arctic F12 PWM PST CO intake & a Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM exhaust, .
Thanks for the suggestion!
it's nice that they've made a second generation of this with a better fan and mounting system
i had to buy the new 212 black fan for my am4 socket but I couldn't waste my beloved classic Evo, so I used the fan as a pull fan and now i have an amazing push pull setup and the temps are just amazing , if you're upgrading from evo to 212 black , you should definitely do that
Eight years later still going strong, cooling i7 3770K@4.5 GHz on my second system.
Still have it such a champ.
Its awesome that cooler still matters to this day, but at the same time I'm glad I didn't get that instead I bought its clone the Deepcool Gammaxx 400 which its installation on the AMD AM4 Socket is straight forward that uses the official out of the box bracket.
Your video helped my install, thank you for sharing
Since when was the Hyper 212 Evo hard to install? As long as you put the back plate on while it's still outside of the case you're good.
I still have a Hyper 212 for AM3, wanted to reuse it for my Ryzen when I finally upgraded, but CM only sold AM4 brackets for it briefly. Got a Black edition instead, but still holding onto the original in the vain hope I can source a bracket one day for my (now) older AM4 system.
i literally bought it last week for my 5600x build and it says am4 ready and it has the right bracket for am4, so idk what ur on about
@@Ironraven24 That's because you bought the Hyper 212 EVO V2, I'm talking about the V1 which was made 10 years ago before AM4 existed. The only difference between the V1 and V2 is the retention bracket, which is why it was a shame CM only briefly supported selling AM4 brackets for the V1 since both versions have identical performance.
@@blarghmcblarghson1903 nope i bought the v1 lol i know it existed 10 years ago and it has an am4 compatible bracket now
edit: there are also other differences in the v2 such as the installation, the fan it uses, and even the size of the heatsink. I refunded it tho for a black edition bc fuck installing a v1.
@@blarghmcblarghson1903 Ohh my bad yeah, I think they did stop offering the AM4 brackets for it in NA a while ago
the mounting mechanism of the og 212 evo is one of the simpler ones i've seen on aircoolers
I got myself a 212 Black edition for my rig. I don't have a super high end rig, but it keeps my Ryzen 2600X cooler than the stock cooler. Though when I put it into my Q300L, I was worried about clearance. It works but it's a tight squeeze lol.
And I was able to get it on sale for 30 or 35. I like the fact this cooler is good for budget builds and is still inexpensive.
Edit: also I got a cooler that's similar called a Vetroo V5 cooler from Amazon. I got it for my brother in laws build (for mid-range work/gaming). It works pretty well. You should check that out. It was easy to install, but it has the wire holder type installation for the fan.
I have a V2 RGB Black Edition. It has the plastic clips. It actually works great! I did push pull config. Kept even OC 9700K cool.
Well it's been 3yrs and it still rocks on my PC. 👍
I bought a H212 EVO LED for 14€. It has the pushpin mounting so that is really easy to install.
I built my rig back in 2009 with an AMD Phenom X3 and a CM Hyper 212 air cooler, it still works now in 2021....
can you guys do ID-Cooling cpu cooler reviews? specifically the SE224-XT (Basic) model for about $20
I build PC for myself and for my friends like 20+ years, but this fan is the only one that died BEFORE PC went to retire.
So if someone decide to use it, keep an eye on CPU temps, setup MB warning for fan fault (if you have that option in BIOS) or take glass panel to have some visuals.
