    I have two locomotive facts extra: the first one is for the DR 18 201. The train was initially built because the DR wanted to export coaches wich were approved for 160 kp/h (100 mp/h) but had no locomotive wich could reach such speeds.
    My second extra fact: The DRG 05 001/002 where exactly the same, although 05 002 reached the record speed it was scrapped along with 05 003 in 1960. 05 001 came to the Verkehrsmuseum (national transportation museum) in Nuremberg in 1963. Also a little side note on 05 003: this locomotive was turned and had the firebox facing forward. Because of that 05 003 was fueled by coal dust (oil wasn’t available) but this kind of firing didn’t work out because the dust wich needed a long pipe to be delivered to the firebox clogged the pipe up. Later it was turned so that the firebox was now facing backwards and its streamlined paneling was removed in the process

    Liked the video. Just a quick note that Flying Scotsman was an A1 when it touched 100mph. At the time it had a boiler which was rated at only 180psi. It was one of the last A1s to be rebuilt into an A3 (220psi boilers) in about 1947/48.
    Papyrus was an A3 as built but it reached 108mph pulling a passenger train and not freight. None of our freights would have got near that speed!!!
    The German one at number 2 did 124.5mph and it was hauling passenger stock. There is an arguement that it might have gone faster and yet it was hauling less than Mallard at the time of the record and on the flat. They also suffered inside bearing trouble if not serviced correctly. So really the top spot is open to question and arguement. As is the age old arguement of Duchess and A4s.....

    Apparently 100mph wasn't uncommon for big steam. In the early 1900's there was a huge fire in downtown Knoxville, TN. A call was made for all available firefighting equipment, and one such unit came from Chattanooga, TN. It consisted only of an engine, tender, and flatcars hauling pumpers. My friend told me the newpapers at the time said the train made record time, and was traveling 100mph when it came through Bearden into west Knoxville.

    • @spikey2740
      @spikey2740 Рік тому +1

      @@OscarOsVideos One of the biggest problems of them traveling fast is that of reversing direction of things such as pistons. All those mechanical items are heavy, and making them go fast is hard on equipment, especially when it changes direction (repeatedly).
      It is the same problem an automobile engine has, quickly reversing the direction of rods and pistons. It isn't easy.
      One thing all the big, fast locomotives had in common was large drive wheels. That helped in the department of reversing direction but it wasn't everything.

    While Mallard holds the official record without question, there were probably several others that could have taken the record if not for the obsession with the appearance of safety in the USA. There are numerous tales of Milwaukee Road F7 Baltics hitting 130 MPH, and the documented speeds certainly make this believable. N&W Class J 610 hit 110 MPH hauling a 1050 ton train ! The Santa Fe 2900s hit triple digit speeds repeatedly pulling huge loads across the flatlands. The NYC Niagara's produced over 6000 horsepower and hit triple digit speeds frequently in service. I can only wish the USA had the same attitude as the Brits do about speed. Then maybe when the 2900 restoration is complete we might see some real numbers.

      Mallard was only four months old at the time. They ensured they had a loco new enough to not be worn, but used enough to have been run in. On Mallard's run, there were engineering works on the line which Nigel Gresley wasn't informed about prior to the run. Gresley said he was sure Mallard could have easily reached 130mph if it wasn't for this. Lets not forget the locos centre piston, as stated above, and the fact she was hauling approximately 250 - 260 tons at the time which is more than the German loco to had previously owned the record. (I know too much about the railways in Britain, but little outside of Britain other than everywhere else has really ugly trains)

      Mallard had to start slow because of rail work at Grantham. She was doing only 17mph here, she should have been doing 70mph. The record attempt was done on a Sunday and was kept secret, hence the rail maintenance crews were working on the line and weren't aware that the section would be used. Because of this she came upon the Essendine bend after Stoke Bank and had to slow. Even so she was doing 100mph+ around this bend, the speed limit was 90mph. Because of this she broke the middle big end and was in danger of breaking the draw bar. She hit 126mph at Stoke Bank, the highest point in the run. Prior to that she'd been climbing and AVERAGED 120mph for five miles during this climb. (Check the record yourself in National Rail Museum in York). Greasley wanted to do the run again but WWII intervened. Greasley insisted that given a straight track the A4s could hit 130mph+.

    In June 29th 1937 a pacific of the London Midland Scottish Railway No 6220 Coronation achieved 114 MPH and set the world record before Mallard topped it.
    Interestingly, the Mallard run was booked as a test run for a Westinghouse brake, which was just a cover-up for a well planned attempt at the speed record.
    For this attempt, Sir Nigel Gresley, the locos designer asked the running department for a suitable driver and was told that they would get him the best on the chosen route.
    Gresley replied, I don't want the best, I want the most fearless.
    Sadly, although the attempt was successful, it proved too much for Mallard, as the inside cylinder (A4s had 3 cylinders) main crank big end bearing overheated and failed.
    Also of interest, after the run driver Joe Duddington said that he thought Mallard was easily capable of 130 MPH and this might have been achieved had he had to slow down for the junction at Essendine and for a section that had a speed restriction of 15 MPH.
    Sir Nigel Gresley planned to have another attempt at 130 MPH in 1935, but sadly war broke out and put a stop to it..

Every so often I got to do work ( mostly sanders and brakes ) at what we called the junction where a Locomotive would come in after hauling a load from Richmond Va. where we would turn them around to head back to Richmond and then up to West Virginia to load up on coal. We worked outside from -2 degrees to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The job paid well but was a very dangerous job as we always worked around moving equipment. I was injured by 300 pounds of steel that hit me in the knees. I was forever damaged goods and was let go as I could not do the work anymore. It was hard work but fun , I thought. I think that you will find that it was Gresley's intention to go for the speed record and that the brake test was just a cover for it. Mallard was selected because it had done 5000 miles since it's last shopping, so was nicely run in, and driver Duddington was a known speed freak.
      As far as Scotsman's claim for 100mph goes I think that is slightly dubious. Firstly it was in it's as built condition with 180lb boiler and short travel valves and secondly the trace on the recording paper shows a jolt up to 100mph instead of a curve. I will let you make your own minds up.

    Great video, really enjoyed this. You also did a good job on counting down all the important facts and leaving out controversal opinions.
    Just a little nitpick I found at 3:52 : 18 201 wasn't built in the early 1970s, it was built from 1960 - 1961 mostly out of 61 002, the locomotive of the "Henschel-Wegmann-Zug" and also some parts from engines of the class 41 and 44.
    Otherwise than that, great work. ;-)

      The famous Henschel-Wegman was introduced in 1936 as a twice daily service between Berlin Anhalter Bahnhof and Dresden Central Station. With travel time of 1 hour and 40 minutes, this service marks till today the fastest connection between Berlin and Dresden. Not even ICE trains are faster, nearly 85 years after introduction of the service.

I was born in York and used to eat my sandwiches while looking at the train during my lunch time. As a small boy I remember seeing it. All these wonderful steam locomotives wound up being scrapped because their railroad lines were going bankrupt, and the corporation was doing everything they could, to help the company survive. Few did, no matter what they tried. No company wants to go bankrupt, but the U.S. gov't's move to revoke the U.S. mail contract, and the creation of the interstate highway system, essentially doomed many of the railroads. Dieselization did the rest.

      The NW J class still runs today it's sole survivor 611 can be found on display in Roanoke VA. It's on hold for excursion service due to Am Track playing politics. The east end shops in Roanoke rated the locomotive to 142 mph but it never got there she ran up to speeds of 110 mph. Another US currently operational 4-8-4. Is UP 844 built by Alco in 1944 that engine reached speeds of in excess of 120 mph. The main reason why speed records were not kept by US railroads is because they ran tight schedules and each railroad was competing for passenger service. Locomotive speeds were a guarded secret. People like to compare British and American steam locomotives. They were designed for different purposes in regards to passenger service. US locomotives pulled long and heavy contential service. While their British and European counterparts pulled commuter and short distance passenger work. You are comparing concord to Air Force One.

    Unfortunately for the City of Truro the is no verifiable evidence of its achievement. Some commentators don't believe that it every did the ton. Without the evidence, like there is for The Fling Scotsman, it's open to debate whether or not City of Truro got there first.

    • @Rosie6857
      @Rosie6857 7 років тому +2

      I don't think there's any doubt City of Truro did 100 mph but not the 102.3 sometimes quoted. I have seen the stopwatch timings and plotted them on a graph. The last one looks a bit low but by drawing a best-fit line through the points you can certainly claim 100 mph.

    • @neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819
      @neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 7 років тому +2

      Rosie6857 there are some that claim that Rouse Martin made errors in counting the mile posts and along with his watch only recording to 0.2 second that the recording of City of Truro's efforts were in accurate. This has been covered in great detail in Railway Magazine in the UK. The main issue is that there was only one timing taken and no one independently verified it, making it harder to accept as genuine.

    • @Rosie6857
      @Rosie6857 7 років тому +1

      I don't think you're right in saying that Rous-Marten took only one reading. As far as I am aware he took quite a number and the lowest was 8.8 sec for a quarter-mile which equates to 102.3 mph, a figure that on its own cannot be taken seriously. But the other readings point to a maximum of about 100 mph, which, after all, is not implausible though it needs a lot of steam.

    • @neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819
      @neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 7 років тому +2

      Rosie6857 never said he only tookone reading, I said his watch was limited to readings of 0.2 of a second. As he was the only person making the recording (the timing) an errors in the recording will not be highlighted which makes his claims, less reliable then those made about The Flying Scotsman which was made using a calibrated dynamometer car.

    Actually, the A3s production period is a bit weird. It began with 52 Gresely A1s in the early 20s, the first 12 of which were numbered 1470-1482, a little later 4470-4482. The first one, 4470 Great Northern was turned into a one-of-a-kind A1/1 by Edward Thompson (Gresley's not so liked successor), while the other 51 A1s remained A1s until 1946, when they were rebuilt as A3s. And that was after 27 new-built A3s began appearing in the late 20s.
    Feel free to go crosseyed.
    Also, although 2509 Silver Link bit the dust, survivng A4 locomotive 4464 Bittern has been masquerading as Silver Link for a while in perservation.

      The DRG 05 is an impressive locomotive that got very close to Mallard's record, but it should be noted that when it was setting its record it was hauling 197 tonnes whilst Mallard was hauling over 200 tonnes. Ultimately the A4s have shown themselves to have greater longevity, with 2 currently operational and still able to reach 90mph.
