MIDI Guitar 2024 - My reasons for choosing software over hardware

  • For anyone interested in the idea of being able to play a lot of different instruments and sounds with their guitar (like our keyboard colleagues have done for years), but hasn't kept up with the latest developments in the MIDI Guitar scene, I am presenting the software alternative solution here. JamOrigins next next-generation software MIDI Guitar 3 should be considered a serious alternative for a couple of reasons, which I list in this video. MPE, Infinite sustain, the new MIDI Machine Shredder, and a few new synths are displayed here. Of course, there are going to be differences in opinion as to what is the better alternative, software or hardware, and I'll gladly discuss that in the comment section below.

    My reasons for using software over hardware (not only for MIDI but also for amp sims and FX) is because my work requires me to travel constantly so I carry my headless Steinberger guitar, Windows laptop, iPad and a small audio interface, all fits in my carry-on, I hope version 3 is released soon for Windows and iOS

      I have a similar setup for my most mobile stuff. And I also prefer to have everything (including Amp sims and fx) on the computer, and preferably saved down to the patches when possible. And I too hope that MG3 is coming to all platforms soon enough, but that is completely out of my hands, unfortunately. 👍

    I'm stuck between going the software route and hardware route. I'd prefer hardware for the hands-on feel and knob turning, but being locked into a 6 string or ~4 octaves for the GK5 pickup is a huge turnoff. I play 8 string guitars for more range to transcribe songs from film and video games.
    I guess if I'm ending up in Cubase or Ableton anyway, I might as well use a hybrid setup: MIDI Guitar 2 + some VSTs (Komplete 14 CE), and run a Radial EXTC Stereo for an effects loop of guitar pedals.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  13 днів тому

      To each his own. We all do what feels best for us. I am not comfortable with any 8-string. Luckily, it seems, as most setups struggle with extended range instruments. I can still access the same low tunings, of course, but retuning the output. And I love the idea of having everything already set up in patches, and just connect my instrument and controllers. But it is just a matter of taste I think. I am to old to be carrying a lot of gear around. I rather show up with just a computer and a guitar. 👴💻🎸

    I JUST started down this rabbit hole a few weeks ago!
    Got midiguitar 2 up and running on the iPad and now SWAM instruments are on deck!
    Any chance you could help with routing an expression pedal to various parameters in a SWAM Auv3 (in loopy pro would be precisely what im trying to do, however any exposure to midi mapping the pedal to an auv3 instance would be pointing me in the right direction)?
    [Edit: tangential question - which parameters are best for the expression pedal? Is it one for all SWAM instruments or does it change from one to another?]

      Welcome down! 🤝 I don't know anything about Loopy Pro, I am afraid, but for all SWAM instruments in general the only parameter that needs a controller assigned is Expression. So if you "only" have one pedal it is that you should target. Check on the forum, for other users using Loopy Pro. I think I've seen discussions about it there. jamosapien.com

    I started with a Roland GR synth, and went on to the Roland and Axon guitar-to-midi interfaces. It opened a new world for me, and I sold my hardware units back when Jamorigin MidiGuitar 2 came out. I was actually worried I couldn't sell it, if people had discovered there was a software solution. My experience was that MidiGuitar 2 was that is was least equal in latency and response to my old hardware units, but for a lot less money, and a lot simpler to set up. Now MidiGuitar 3 is absolutely best-practice gear for midi guitar, imo, just fantastic. I never play live with it, though, as midi guitar got me interested in learning keyboards (which I have to a basic level), but I use midi guitar to record, frequently. I did all the Roland GK3, still have a few guitars with 13-pin, mostly for my SY-1000. However, I also play keys, and now with MPE and polyphonic aftertouch, keyboards can also be expressive.
    For expressive keyboard control, MPE, I use a KMI Kboard-Pro-4, 48-keys, usually for leads; for everything else velocity and mono aftertouch - both common - work fine.
    Unfortunately MIDI keyboard controllers and keyboards that support MPE, poly AT, are few, and often expensive, but should be more common in a few years.
    FWIW, I don't use my keyboards to sound like guitars, and vice versa. Finally having true expression with MPE capable keyboards is great, and I no longer follow or care about guitar synths such as the GM-800. Keeping my SY-1000 and SY-300 because I have guitars with GK3/13-pin, and patches I created.
    IMO

    What an amazing creation!!! Is the alt tuning functionality available in MG3 beta, if not WHEN? This feature solves the midi guitar software conundrum for me! I’m still using my VG-99 precisely because of multiple custom tunings.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  Місяць тому

      There is a RETUNER module in MG3 now, where you can incrementally change any or all of the individual pitches of any octave split (between 6-18 notes) of your choice . You can also load tuning files into it, changing tuning/temperament that way. If you are thinking of alternate tunings like DADGAD and such, MG# doesn't recognize strings. It only recognize pitches, and any group of pitches can be retuned or harmonized in particular ways, but traditional retuning will have to wait until/if MIDI Guitar 3 get hexPU support.

    I have a Jamstick studio midi guitar (connects via usb-c or Bluetooth) & I also have Midi Guitar 3.
    I can only play my Jamstick midi guitar at 64 samples before latency starts to become a factor, whereas using my actual guitar running through Midi guitar 3 software, can run at 256 samples and still have near abouts the same latency. Much more headroom with CPU, and tracks unbelievably well!

      Hi Sam! I am so glad to hear the honest opinion /report from an actual user of any of the rival systems (that I haven't had a chance to try for myself yet). Often I feel MIDI Guitarists assume an almost unreasonably protective stance in favor of the system they invested in. And aI can understand that. It is a leap of faith, and often at a considerable cost. So you probably don't wan to hear of anything else being better, even if only at stuff not really considered to be that particular setup's strong point. Therefore I find your report exceptionally refreshing, and thank you very much for it! 🙏🙏🙏

    You're timing couldn't have been better. Just yesterday, I was lamenting not having a good solution for playing MIDI via my guitar. I've looked at the various hardware solutions, but the expense, guitar modifications, and less than stellar results were unacceptable. Software MIDI solutions didn't fare much better due to various types of pitch accuracy issues, and constraints on how to play the guitar for good MIDI translation.
    MIDI Guitar 2 caught my attention about a year ago, and that was when I had real hope that good MIDI via a regular guitar could be achievable soon. MIDI Guitar 3 looks like that day is arriving. Do you know about when it will be available on Windows to try it out?

      I have had a minor part in helping the developer out (JamOrigin) with some feed backing during the last years of this process. I guess that helps out a little when it comes to knowing some of the details? About the MG3 complexity; I believe it will be easier to get started with MG3 compared to how I remember my own tackling MG2.While there is really nothing special here you NEED to do to get started, there is of course a whole bunch of stuff you CAN do in MG3 once you are up and running. Time will probably tell me if I am wrong here, but I think MG3 is really more accessible that much of the competition, because everything is on the surface. There are very few settings in hidden menus, and stuff like this. 👍

      Good or not is going to be depending on HOW you play those I would say. If you are a clean picker/strummer like Joe Pass or Jim Hall you can get away with almost everything. I use five/six notes in my chords all the time (and I am NO Joe Pass 😄), and the difference from using MG2 is incredible. Will it beat the clarity/sparation in a hexPU setup? I don't know, you have to try for yourself to see if it is what you are looking for. But I brings out the dynamic nuances in a way that isn't achievable with any hexPU that I have tried. Please tell Jam Origin to make the MG3 Windows & iOS progress more visible. In all honesty my one issue with not going with MG2 a few years ago was the lack of being able to tell how supported it is. IOW, is this just some developers pet project or is it serious and will be supported far into the future. I feel confident that the later is the case especially with the announcement of MG3, but it still seems like there’s not enough resources available for development.
      Without getting into a Windows vs. Mac debate, I’m surprised that both platforms were not being developed simultaneously. Or even Windows taking precedence over Mac. Mac no longer holds the creative world hostage. Regardless, I’m very interested and excited to get working with MG3. In case your wondering why not get started with MG2? I have other ways to get midi guitar sounds now and would rather start fresh with what seems like a very significant upgrade in features and UI. Thanks.

      @@AudioAtmos Hi! Of course, I'll pass on your very sensible request for greater visibility concerning the iOS/Wimdows status in the development process. I am taking the brunt from that lack of information anyway as every third comment I respond to concerns precisely that. Regarding the company, it IS indeed a one-man production. But you should probably not question his resolve to deliver the best possible product, as MG3 has been seven years in the making and still it is going to be free for all previous MG2 users.
      The reason for starting developing and testing for Mac and porting to iOS and Windows later is his decision, and I guess it is as simple as a strategy to handle feedback and troubleshooting. I'll let him know how you feel, but out of curiosity, where have you searched for information? And where do you think it should be, to be easily found, in your opinion?

To answer your question post on the forum. Maybe make a thread regarding platform support and the progress towards it.

    Thanks for the profound information about the vast possibilities of MIDI Guitar 3 - if one wants to go down the more synth oriented rabbit hole, I totally agree with your view. I am however more traditionally oriented as sounds and playing technique are concerned and have found a combination of hardware (BOSS GM-800) and software (Gig Performer 4) to be my favorite solution. I control my patch settings in the hardware and can use all combinations of virtual instruments and plugins inside of Gig Performer - I even use it for my vocal effects and pickup guitar sound. So I guess that hard- and software aren’t mutually exclusive when playing MIDI guitar. Best wishes, Eddie
