Backbone - Guitar Cover with Tab! - Gojira
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 січ 2020
- A redo of my Backbone by Gojira cover now with tabs! I had requests from several people to do tabs for some of my older Gojira videos so here's the first one. The almighty Backbone!
Tuning - D standard
This one is a killer on the left arm with the amount of gallops and tremolo picking. There is no fast way to building up the muscle stamina apart from practising over several days/weeks/months depending on how use a lot of picking you are. My suggestion is to practise but stop as soon as it's uncomfortable, then return again later. Practise gallops in-between learning other songs or other exercises too and eventually you will get there.
The tremolo with the octaves is another killer on the picking arm. I tend to use my arm more - not ideal but does the job, others will use the wrist more.
Questions and comments below as always! Enjoy!
For those curious - video and audio are recorded separately, it results in a better video for everyone 🤘
Gear - Dean Cadillac Select, UA-25EX interface, Logic X, Ernie Ball strings, JBL305 monitors.

Ah yes, the good ol' "carpal tunnel syndrome is a lie" song. Awesome gallops just like in your previous cover man!
My right arm doesn't appreciate this song... haha. Thanks 🤘
lmao I almost get CTS faster when I started to play Metallica, Megadeth, and Gojira songs in a span of a year more than in 7yrs I trained boxing by hitting people and heavy bags lmao
Playing this song is worth the arthritis you get right after
srsly...the arthritis is almost instantaneous..!!!
Nah not in the night, rights after the songs end
I know the feeling
Thé galloping is insanely fast
This is the channel for gojira covers. Awesome Joe Duplantier faces
Thank you 🤘
Saw gojira for the first time last week. They played this song second, and was absolutely unreal. Great work dude!
Such an epic band live. Incredibly tight
Yes!
See a lot of different things from the old cover! You dude never disappoint me! Thanks
Thank you, I went back to various live videos and re-learnt several parts so it should be pretty accurate now 🤘
Great playing! This song used to be on my running playlist all of 2020. Finally got to see Gojira last week and they played this song - it was glorious!
man that tone is meaty! great video bro .
this is literally the first place i come to learn gojira songs....thanks shadowmantra your thaaaa besssssss(subtle lisp)ssssssssT'AH!
Your work is perfection it's THE best and the most accurate cover of backbone I've seen nice job keep up the good work 👌💪👍👏
Thank you 🤘
You are so underrated lol.
Your playing is very accurate and precise, I love your covers and the attention to Gojira! 🤘
Glad you like them and they're helpful!
This song is very cool, thanks for sharing the technique and tabs :)

Awesome Steve!
Snapped my pick in half, that riff is something else. Awesome job man
Just in time for my favourite part
loving the double layered gojira merch!

🤘🤘
Im getting so much help on this song from you!!!! ty
You're welcome! 🤘
Just tried playing alongside you after checking your video a first time, gotta say that is a hard one to play right, but gosh is it fun though!
My man! You rock!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks 🤘
Gojira has made my wrist steel. Love it. Keep up the videos!
They're definitely have some good riffs for the picking hand 🤘
this earned a sub
Thats impressively accurate! Damn i gotta work on getting my tremolo tight like that...
Thanks, the tremolo stuff can be a real pain so just practise it regularly and you'll get there 🤘
nice cover and song dude! i'm also a big gojira fan 🤠🖤🤘🏻
Thank you 🤘 they are a great band
thanks mate ,i gonna do a cover
Awesome as always man! When I'm not so broke, I'll be your patron. Fuck it, I'll sign up the 28th! I learn a lot from your covers, thanks!
Thank you, I'm glad they've helped 🤘
Right hand on fire 🥵🤯
Gojira has become my favorite band.
Give this man some coolpacks, unbelievable🤟
Thank you 🤘
" killer on the left arm" I confirm
It's time 🤘
Got that same shirt at Knotfest this past year👍
One of my favourite designs on a shirt of recent years.
Nice
Thank you 🤘
The heaviest backbone cover in the universe.
Please do ocean planet :)
Please do Pain is a master!
I've been practicing this for a half hour and my right elbow wants to die. I think that's enough for today. Great cover!
Thank you! It definitely is an arm killer song.
👍👍👍👍
Good cover. I love this song to warm up my picking hand. I see a lot of people complaining about the gallops. Y'all need to go practice your thrash. Go practice the intro to she-wolf by Megadeth or Disposable Heroes by Metallica. Play those riffs until your hands fall off
Hey man what camera are you using ? Looks pretty good! 😁👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks. It's nothing to fancy - a Nikon D3300
I think he likes Gojira
Good Job, greetings from Colombia, please
keep in mind Ocean Planet and The Art Of Dying with tabs, I'm not sure how to play
Thank you 🤘
*BACK-FUCKING-BONE!*
Btw. did you plan to make a cover of some tracks when they were called as Godzilla? Locked in a Syndrom is a sick track, Terra Incognita too (I don't mean the hidden track at the of In the Forest).
When playing the triplets I can’t stop the d string from overpowering the g string any advice to stop this? Also great cover :)
adjust pickup/bridge height?
Yo, started learning this song a few days ago and I'm having trouble with the muting during the octave part, is there any way I can get my finger to mute the string properly or is it just practice? Its the speed that's killing me, too. Great tab by the way, nothing on the internet comes close!
Hiya, to mute the middle string during the octaves you can use either the index finger rolled back slightly so it light touches the string or you can use the other finger (ring or pinky depending on which you use) and use the very top of the finger to lightly touch and mute the string. Hope that makes sense! Glad the tab is helping too 🤘
@@ShadowMantraSteve yeah I've been using my infex finger, flattened out, kinda like Ben Eller talks about, by the way did you have any trouble with the D string overpowering the G while playing? I'm very new to guitars and I've no idea what to adjust, would fucking with the mixer I have help?
@@bleh8789 That's because of your pickups, yea, you need to adjust the EQ on the amp and when you mix it too
The end bit is the same notes as the tremolo octave part. Huh just realized that.
my pick keeps on losing its position in my fingers whenever i get to the 1:50 mark. Got any tips on how to get the pick to stop rotating?
I have similar problems when playing Backbone, I tend to re-adjust it in gaps between notes though it doesn't always work so something I'm still figuring out. I know some people prefer pics that have grips on them which probably helps a bit.
Played this all the way through the other night....fuck my arm!!!
Ive been practicing the ground shattering bit at 3:20 and i just cant seem to get the gallops to sound like that. no matter how fast. i feel defeat. what is the key there are they simple gallops or am i missing something? amazing cover btw.
Thank you 🤘 they're just normal gallops with a pretty heavy palm mute
@@ShadowMantraSteve Thank you!
Hi Steve, do you use a Gojira Archetype from neural? or another analog dist?
I use the old LePou plugins mainly, TSE808 plugin as a tube screamer and then godscab and Marshall impulses mainly
What string gauge do you use for D Standard? Trying to find the sweet spot for these double-string gallops
I change quite a bit but use 11-48 quite a lot
I have a question, the main riff is down up down? Or down down up?
down up down for the gallops
Way to human! Human in the verb sense.
How in the world do you tremolo octaves that quickly? My goodness...
A lot of practise. I still get a lot of arm fatigue from them and have to make sure I've warmed up a bit.
Never figured out how to tremolo across many strings.
Have you figured it out yet?
@@Germs19 Sadly, no. My pick still gets stuck between the strings.
Use a sharper, smaller pick. Preferably a jazz pick. Choke up on the pick more, so you're mostly picking with the tip. Angle your pick downward like you're cutting through them instead of holding the pick parallel to the strings. Try picking more from the wrist like you're turning a doorknob. Alternatively, anchor your pinky and ring finger to the guitar and use your forearm. Keep practicing. You'll get it.
Man, I know you like prog songs, do you know Evergrey? I can't find Evergrey covers on the Internet, they have so many cool songs, you could listen to them and make covers as well or find a friend of you who likes them and ask for him to make them :)
Evergrey: "the phantom letters", "Where August Mourns", "A Touch of Blessing", I'm a very big fan of them.
I've not heard of them before but I'll check them out 👍
@@ShadowMantraSteve You will not regret :) for sure, some of these songs get the "prog feeling" after 1 minute, they have this kind of guitar prog stops you already are very familiar with.
Your guitar looks weird (in a good way!). It's like an explorer on it's top and a gibson on it's bottom, what exactly is it?
It's a Dean Cadillac
Thanks for the info, you rock man! \m/
I got carpal tunnel just watching this
tempo?
You don't know what the real pain is 'till you play backfuckingbone
You can literally feel your right hand tearing away from your wrist😂
Indeed! Just finished off the bass video and it's just as brutal on hand
Drop C?
D standard
@@ShadowMantraSteve thank you 🤘🏻
I can only practice this song 3 times...then I have to move on to some air supply...or tennis elbow will take me out..this song should probably be called "forearm bone"
the art of dying dude please:(((
Eventually I will 🤘
Putain de merde la main droite en furie ;)
Not that hard actually. I thought it was impossible to play
It's not so bad once you've got the basics down. Getting the stamina up to play the full song is the real challenge!
Tremolo single note section is 12 on the C string then 11 on the G string right?
Ok fine ill practice my triplets. God Am.
