How Do I Test My Boat’s Batteries to Find Out if They Are Still Good?

  • "I am just about to complete the purchase of my new (used) boat," writes Dave. "There are (2) 12V lead-acid batteries both around 90Ah in size, one for engine start and one for the house. Is there a way to establish the condition of these batteries? I don't wish to head out in the new boat to find out the batteries are not holding a charge."

I chose to buy new batteries when I got my boat. They aren’t much on top of the cost of the boat and the peace of mind is well worth it in my opinion.

Just buying a new boat so this is helpful info Jeff. I was wondering, “how do I know if my batteries are any good?”

for deep cycle batteries the only real test is a c20 test. unfortunately it takes 20 hours and requires a few tools to make it easy to do.

Very Helpful. Thanks for the tips. Will get some testing done!

Does the c 20 test apply for lithium batteries as well ?

Just purchased a Konnwei KW208 battery tester. Seems to work ok. Sure hope it gives accurate diagnosis of batt condition. Just trashed a $330 grp 31 agm battery based on test. Are you familiar with how these testers work. Do they replicate the tests you describe only in a few seconds?

Using 650 tester same brand. All this toys are good for quick initial checks. Due to their internal algorithms. For accurate figures only long tests are suitable . I mean if it shows OK- it’s OK in most cases. Wen “replace” -you have to perform more tests to be sure.

i have a 3 pole off 1 all 2 battery switch . boat starts on all position ,then switched to position 2 crank lead acid wet 94 cca on my boat. motor started .but when i switched to position 1 house 200 a/hr agm deep cycle to simulate crank battery fail, all i got was a failed attempt .am i expecting to much from my house battery to start the engine on its own in emergency ?or should you only attempt start in the all position in a emergency.both batteries had been on shore power for a couple of days and disconnected from shore power to try this start test. engine 30hp Yanmar diesel

I think you mentioned a c20 test was on a lead acid battery. Can I do the same test on my firefly battery and are the numbers the same? Down to 10.5?

I'm curious about leaving a boat on the hard for the winter. With no shore power what is the best way to maintain the batteries? Could I hook a solar panel up? Do I leave switch on...or combine?

do you need to power anything on the boat? I would disconnect the batteries compleatly so there is zero drain. The only issue then is the boat filling up with rain water if it leaks. Since you no longer have a bilge pump. (yes it happens) A boat left in the water I would defiantly not leave with no bilge pump power.
I'm asumming everything gets winterized so it can't freeze?

Side note: any chance you're mistakenly not using your fancy mic? I hear a lot of delayed reflection, which sounds like the perspective of where your laptop might be, rather than where the mic is.

Agreed. I remember seeing a really good tip about publishing on UA-cam and they said people will put up with poor video quality but not poor sound. Poor sound will destroy good content. There is lots of good advice on UA-cam on how to improve sound quality. Having said that, Jeff, thanks so much for doing this stuff. I find these videos very helpful.
