  • Erik, the Asian Movie Enthusiast presents:
A review of “Time”, a South Korean romance from 2006 that was directed by Kim Ki-duk.
Our film begins with a romantic couple who have been together for over two years. The girl has become paranoid that her man is going to leave her for a more beautiful woman, and it would seem that her boyfriend has become less responsive in bed. Faced with this increasingly stale relationship, the girl makes the bizarre decision to undergo plastic surgery and completely alter her face, without informing her boyfriend. She just straight-up disappears without a trace. The boyfriend becomes concerned and confused regarding her disappearance, but comes to the conclusion that she left him for an indefinite period of time, and will come back to him at some point. Six months later, she does indeed return, but refuses to disclose her identity. Instead, she attempts to seduce her former boyfriend under the veil of a different woman’s identity.
A fantastic movie that explores the psychology behind plastic surgery. It stars Jung-woo Ha and Hyun-ah Sung.

What I loved about Time was that the premise does not seem entirely farfetched for fodder for a melodrama or rom-com that the South Korean shove out in spades, just look at your standard "first love" type drama like "She was Pretty"; however, KIm Ki-Duk takes in his own stylistic direction subtle and filled with well-executed intelligent social commentary that keeps you thinking without beating you over the head with it (Looking at you Bong Joon-ho). I also liked that he easily could have gone a erotic thriller direction with this premise a la fatal attraction, but never makes it that exploitative. That said, the dialogue heavy aspect could be distracting based off of his past repertoire.
Good to see another viewer with a non-traditional favorite Kim Ki-Duk movie (traditional being say 3-iron or Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, ... and Spring) . My personal favorite is Birdcage Inn and I may be the only person I've seen that rates it that high.

Nice to see another fan of this one. I do agree that it has a subtlety to it that creates a thought-provoking experience. It has balance too.

I watched this many years ago. I found it difficult to understand what was happening. I did enjoy other Kim Ki Duk movies --- The Bow, Spring....., 3 Iron --- perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention. Time for a re-watch, I think.

I find that most of Kim's films improve after multiple viewings. Even the ones that I enjoyed were better the second time around.

great review thx, thank goodness you explained the plot, lol . film didn't work for me, too over wrought and melodramatic, story didnt seem to rise to the occasion, but maybe it was just me, and gorgeous Korean women one after the other literally throwing themselves at the lead male character? Only happens in film director's tilted minds, i mean come on now, why would he even have a conflict then? So his altered ex gf would be a forgotten memory to him, not a realistic film at all , just my thoughts
