@@gmbfit Great article! Well written and plenty of great points! I'm starting to learn that you need to build strength doing moves that test your range of motion. Basically it is resistance training, not merely stretching.
Exactly. The funny thing is that it's all connected. It's only the fitness industry's need to sell differentiated product that we even separate strength and flexibility.
1. What kind of physical cues should I be looking for with this exercise? For instance, am I supposed to feel something in my glutes? 2. Are there any likely injuries that might be caused by performing this exercise without proper hip socket engagement or prerequisite flexibility? Thank you for your time.
1. you feel what you feel - you have to make the effort to be aware of whatever it is you feel, and that's gonna be unique to your particular arrangement of strengths, tight areas, and anatomy, etc. 2. if you're paying attention to what you feel and steering clear of pain, it's gonna be real hard to hurt yourself stretching.
Finally, an older dude (i'm guessing you age 40-45) doing mobility and flexibility movements. Those over 40 buff dudes just stand there preening like statutes.
Wow. I tried this stance and i can feel it stretch me right out. Iv always been stiff in the legs from being a truck driver and my Dr mentioned that why i have back pain. I hope this can help
for me at kickboxing my feet must face forward my back straight up and my fists next to my ribs and as far down still in a squat as possible I die it for 7 mins
Hi ! In my practice (TaiJiQuan) we are taught to keep feet as paralel as can be, to increase roots and stability. It's kind of hurting my knees. I don't want to argue with my shifu 😉 but what do you think of this requirement, based on your experience as a trainer and martial artist ?
There's different ways to do different stances. Do what your teacher says. What I'm showing here isn't your martial art, so for these purposes, try it this way too. Let different things be different things.
Had my full attention anyway 'cause that's how I role, but as soon as I saw the Les Paul in the background I thought maybe this man is into something 🤔
As a kung fu disciple this Ma Bu looks so wrong 🤣 But i see variations may be possible to achieve different things. 👍 I'm glad the Ma Bu gets around in fitness channels since it's ann awesome exercise
From a martial artists perspective be very careful about turning the knees out too far where you not able to keep your knees strictly aligned with your toes.
@@CraigHocker haha, two years later... :) I'm not teaching a martial art here, so I genuinely don't care how this may be categorized from any particular martial arts context. It's just an exercise, Craig.
@@gmbfit thats interesting. Simple but intuitive.. I never thought of it in those terms.. would that principle be true for all isometric exercises? thanks..

I was trained that your feet should be straight in a horse.
I can't believe I never realized the horse stance I learned years ago could be used as a flexibility exercise. What an eye opener!
Don't worry - I spent twenty years thinking it was basically just for strength... But it can really contribute to active mobility in the hips.
The most impressive part is doing splits in regular jeans. Remember kids, even Batman has to change into tights first!
hahaha, take that, Avengers
I was thinking the same thing! lol Are those stretch jeans?

Best short tutorial
I have fallen in love with calisthenics at age 62 as my number one strength training routine. And I love your education on the subject.
Wow! Great distillation of the squats to splits progression!
That's the most simplistic progression for side splits, im going to try it.
It's simple, and you may find other exercises along the way are helpful, but this will build strength and train the CNS well.
I wanted to learn side and front split, and i get simple routine from you. Thank you, I'll do this

We're doing our best :)

@@gmbfit That differentiation between strength and stretching also occurs in sports for that matter.

I want the T shirt! 🙃
Haha! It's a fun tee. :)
Literally grand plie in 2nd. Thank ballet ;)
feet forward or outwards depends mostly on the hip socket you're gifted with. not everyone can do feet forward
And other things. As forward as comfortably possible is generally good.

Oh my… you’re so flexible!
Well, yeah. That's what happens when you train :)
Good stuff. I appreciate your shirts comment
right on :)
How often do you recommend stretching
I’m a beginner
Start with short sessions every other day.
Great channel! I’m also wondering if you guys use the white mat for videos only? 😂 not sure what that came to mind. Lol
nope, it's there all day
Never limber before a fight, beware a kick to the groin. It happened to a friend of a friend
Huh?
About 4/5 instructors teach toes forward, but they never explain why.
They teach what they were taught. There's lots of post-hoc rationalizations, but martial arts instruction is usually transmitted rather than designed.
To allow medial rotation
How long would you hold the position in the beginning or is it for as long as you can?
As long as it's comfortable to do with good form.
@@gmbfit btw - you have a really good relaxed presentation and it sits well with my logical straightforward way of thinking.
Ma Bu, one hour. LOL.
Do I have to do this for time and if so how long is recommended
5 hours.
If you do this for even 3 minutes every day, you're gonna see noticeable improvements. 3-5 minutes a few times a week is good.
Only on light days ;)
Had my full attention anyway 'cause that's how I role, but as soon as I saw the Les Paul in the background I thought maybe this man is into something 🤔

From a martial artists perspective be very careful about turning the knees out too far where you not able to keep your knees strictly aligned with your toes.
From a martial arts perspective, you should let exercises be exercises and not try to make them also be tactical positions ;)

Sure, but when you do that you have a whole "martial art" context to consider. Try just letting it be an exercise.
Feels like its mostly quads being used.
If that's where you're weakest, then that's what it'll use most.

Why is this dude wearing JEANS to exercise?? Entropy always wins -- exercising in jeans always loses.
