I’ve been watching you forever. Well a long long time. You explain everything so clearly. I’m 69 and you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. LOL.
Hahaha! I still learn things everyday, Brenda! As a matter of fact, I'm always preaching "learn, grow, change, evolve" to be a better version of ourselves! 👍
Perfect for an complete beginner (me). Absolutely love this "kindergarten" explanation!
Margaret, this was really helpful!! I've been making hats and having a hard time getting the sizes correct for the intended recipients. Your explanation is awesome as well as your hat guide.
You are so welcome. Louise!!
I have had that hat sizing chart in my crochet bag for a while - it has been SO very helpful - thanks, Margaret! Great video too!
Same here
Same here! I found my new teacher!
Thank you a thousand times! I have started a lovely bucket hat.. Too small, second try too big. Now I believe the third time will be successful! 🙏🏼❤️
Wonderful! Glad I had something helpful to share!
I started knitting and crochet again after leaving it for many years. So, needless to say I have forgotten a lot. Your videos have helped me the most, and I find I go back to them. Thanks to UA-cam, it makes it easy to find the right teacher for the task at hand. I also bought a rigid heddle loom, and follow 2 different people for that. No more too big hats!!!
What a lovely compliment, Cate! Thank you!
What a great teacher you are! Clear and easily understood instructions. New subscriber.
Learn how to fudge! I love it! I spent years frogging projects before I would allow myself to fudge. I just did this on my last project!
I fudge a lot too. That is the great thing about crochet versus knitting
Fudging is a lifesaver sometimes!
Actually, Deborah, you CAN fudge in knitting, too! I do it all the time!
Love the girls on the chair watching on.
Excellent tutorial.
Oh, yes... the girls are great company! I'm afraid their wardrobe has been ignored since we've moved. I need to sew them up some new threads!
Thanks, Margaret! Since I'm a beginner at crochet, I just added this video to my quick reference list so I can repeat it often. :)
Glad it was helpful, Steina!
Excellent tutorial, Margaret. I wish I had seen this video when I first started making hats. You explained it so well.
Thanks, Sharon! I wish I had seen it when I was a beginner, too!! Ha! I really had a hard time with join area for YEARS. I guess that why we say "live and learn!"
You have saved me! My hats always had the cup shape on top, but not anymore! Thanks so much❤
You are my absolute go to for learning and theory. You are AWESOME! And greatly appreciated. Thank you and God bless your New Year!
awww.... thank you, Rena! What a beautiful compliment!
I knew all this and still was fully entertained! You did a great job explaining hat theory.
What a nice compliment! Thank you, Jessie!
Wow! This is the most clearly explained video I have ever seen on crochet. You covered all the bases on your subject in an easily understandable style. You are a super easy teacher. Big Kudos all around!!!!
What a great video!! Have only been crocheting for a few years & I’m going to reference this video often thank you. Also I love listening to you.
Thank you, Joanne! I'm so glad I had something helpful to share!
I love these instruction videos you put on your channel. Even if you’ve crocheted for a long time we get into bad habits and need to be reminded of tips to fix them. Very information. I don’t like doing gauge swatches but it would probably save me a lot of time if I get back to doing them. Thanks, Margaret. I pray you and you’re family are doing well. ♥️🙏🏻
Well... as I said, I don't do gauge swatches for hats because I know how to manage sizing but with other things it really DOES save time over all! And thanks for the prayers, Anita! We're all fine!
This was a great breakdown. I wish i had seen this video when I started 3ys ago.
You explained it so well.
Thanks, Marion! I wish I had understood it myself when I first started, too!
I've only been crocheting for about a year. I started watching videos and was fortunate to have wandered onto your channel right away. All your suggestions have been invaluable. And I learned how to fudge well enough that people love the hats I've made. Thank-you for your wise help, Margaret. I'm very grateful that you share your knowledge.
What a beautiful compliment to wake up to this morning! Thank you, Tammy! It's a great moment when learning styles and teaching styles align! Have fun with it!
well if this isn’t the best crochet vid i’ve ever seen. love the stitch diameter information
What a lovely compliment to wake up to this morning! Thank you, Vtones25!
I am still a newbie so I obviously still have a lot to learn. I have never made a stitch gauge. But now I understand why I really need to. It makes sense now. So it's another video that I had to save at least until I have it memorized. Thank you so much Margaret.
Well, Lou... now that you know all about hat sizing, you won't ever need to make a gauge swatch for hats BUT it's definitely necessary for other garments. It seems like a waste of time but it really SAVES time in the end! Glad I had something helpful to share!
You are a fantastic teacher Margaret!! I have always thought that designing something was out of my range but I now feel like I might have a clue...lol!
You have all the tools now so go design something, Cyndi!!
Thank you so much for this, clearly explained and has helped tremendously 🥰
Hey Mrs. Margaret!! Thank you so much for this informative video. This will be so helpful when making hats from now on.
Happy Crafting and God Bless
You are so welcome, Ambie! Glad it was helpful!
Awesome. Great information!!!
This is one of my favorite videos of yours. I get all excited every time you post a new one, and I had already printed out the hat dimension charts, but this added even more info that I needed. Thanks so much. BTW my daughter gave me an Aerogarden for Christmas!!!!!
Thank you, Judy! I tried to be as comprehensive as I possibly could but, of course, I now think of a few things I wish I had included! Ha! Ah well... I figure out another way to share that info. An Aerogarden!! Fun! Are you going to grow the herbs it came with or something else?
@@sheepishlysharing Yes, but right now I am growing cherry tomatoes. I love tomatoes.
This video was so very helpful to me . I'm a beginner and need all the tips I can get! Especially the (it's okay to fudge) Thank you for your lovely video!
You're so welcome, Kelly! And I consider good fudging a skill! (After all, if you can see it, then it's really an error and not a fudge.... right?! Ha!)
Great information. These tips are valuable and will save time in creating top down hats. Thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful, Dorothy!
You are the best! I working on a beanie and I’m struggling with the size. This information is invaluable to me. Thank you for taking the time to put it together and sharing it with us. God bless you!!
You are so welcome, Teresa! Glad I could clear up a few things!
Hi, Margaret. This is invaluable information. Thanks for breaking it down for us and making it easy to understand. You're awesome, my friend.
You're so welcome, Cindy! It CAN be challenging without the learner's immediate feedback but I'm glad to know you liked it!
I had a problem with the size of the hats I knit, but I was lucky to come across this video and thanks to the beautiful lady. Now I hope I understand and I will apply your method ... Greetings from Macedonia
What a nice compliment! Thank you and I'm glad I could help!
This video was very helpful. I struggle with the sizing of hats and now I understand why. Thank you so much for explaining the in and outs of sizing a top down hat. I’ll be trying out what I learned soon! Thank again!😀💕
I'm so glad to hear it, Mia! Thank you! Glad I could share a little light on the subject!
I'll tell you what! EVERYTIME I tune into your teachings, you are amazingly clear and wonderful, explaining crochet tips and techniques! I love you so much! You are Pure Joy! This teaching is great! Thank You, Happy, Good, Beautiful, Creative New Year!
You have me blushing over here with all that praise, Belinda! Thank you! But really, I think it's just that your learning style aligns nicely with my teaching style. I'm glad we found each other!
I am SO glad this showed up on my feed today. This is the best explanation. Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful, Dena, and thanks for the kind words!
thanks a bunch for this info, can't get enough great helpful hints
Glad to help, Darcy!

Thanks, sail! Glad I had something helpful to share!
Thanks , can always use tips and tricks 💚
I haven't had many issues since printing
your hat size chart a few months back 🙂
Well, that's good to hear, Denise! Thank you!
Hi Margaret, this was a very helpful tutorial. I like to crochet hats, beanies. You answered so many questions I had. I really appreciate the hat sizing guide. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful, Andrea! Now there's no stopping you!
Love this! You are fabulous. Thank you so much!
Thank you, Margaret. I love the explaining of why. Then correcting makes sense. I’ve also fudged once in a while.😉
YES! That's the foundation of education, Midge! Understanding "the why" is how the lightbulb pops on, if you know what I mean! (It's also a lesson in thinking for one's self rather than following blindly!)
Thanks. Great info. And shows I'm never too old to learn
When we stop learning, we stop growing. When we stop growing, we start dying! Always learn!! Glad I had a helpful tip or two!
Thanks so much, Margaret! You're a lifesaver. Now I understand the sizing/gauge idea. I plan to make hats to donate to needy persons for next winter and you've made it possible!
You're so welcome, Jan! Glad I had something helpful to share!
Margaret, very well presented and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Glad it was helpful, Chula! You're very welcome!
Well done Margaret, even though I didn't need the help I knew your tutorial would be golden. I was sewing the other day with my daughter and was telling her that fudging is okay, nothing we mere humans can make is ever perfect. I hope you are having a healthy and happy new year.
Yep, I agree with your daughter! You can't fudge in math or science but in arts and crafts, it can lead to wonderful new ideas, too!
Hi Margaret, thank you you are excellent at explaining things clearly...Happy New Year to you x
You're so welcome, Lorraine!
I have known your information for a long time, but I really appreciate your graphics. This is so valuable for teaching beginners. I really like your statement about "fudging." "Fudging is important." I wholeheartedly agree and there's nothing wrong with fudging!
What a nice compliment, Ymana! And yes... fudging IS important! I didn't mention this but it's also helpful when there's a mistake in the pattern. Sometimes fudging is an easy fix!
So helpful!! I just learned little things allong the way that will help me to avoid the guessing with different kinds of yarns. Thank you so much!!
Glad it was helpful, Noelia! Glad I had something helpful to share!
Wow...great information. Thank you for taking the time to teach us things that help us more easily enjoy making hats. Blessings
better
Glad to know it was helpful, Betty Jo!
thank you for all that info it was so helpful youtube does not let me know when you are on even tho i am a subriber for years and have hit the little bell thanks for todays info have a great new year
You're so welcome, Penny! Re: the notifications... I could be that the emails are going straight into your spam folder. If that's the case, you find it and click "not spam."
Hi Margaret! Very well done and informative video (as usual). I remember you saying in your (I think) last video that you use to be a teacher...it really shows. You are so good at "dumbing down" some of this so we can understand. Lol as always, enjoyed your video.
Thank you, Martha! Yes I was a teacher but it's not "dumbing down" at all! It's merely breaking it down into basic background of experience which is taking something you already know and relating the new concept all while attempting to hold your attention AND avoiding drawing things out! Whew! I confess it's a bit harder to do without immediate feedback from the learner to see what needs repeating/rewording/a second analogy, bla, bla, bla. Or worse, the learner has got it and you don't want to drone on! Ha! But UA-cam is still such a valuable resource!
Oh Margaret, this is such a valuable, informative and clearly explained video. Thank you so much for clearing up the confusion when it comes to stitch counts and your gauge is way off. I found this so very useful and will keep it as a resource in my playlists. Thank you for sharing 😍🇦🇺💙
I'm so glad you found it helpful, Squish!
Thank you Margaret n happy new year
You're so welcome, Anita, and happy new year to you!
Thank you so much! You really did a great explanation. Very helpful. 😊
THANK YOU!! I can’t tell you how many beanies I’ve given up on because my initial circle wasn’t flat. Thank you for explaining it so clearly. I just wish I found this video sooner!!
You're so welcome! I wish someone had explained it to me when I was first starting! Ha!
So glad I found this tutorial. It is so helpful, I am not a beginner , I guess I am in the middle somewhere. lol. You explained this so clearly. Thank you so much for sharing.
You are so welcome, Helen! Thanks for the kind words!
Thank-You so much Margaret, You helped me so much! Now to apply your lesson !!!! Thank you again for sharing your talent.
Glad it was helpful, Lynne! The fewer the frustrations, the better!
Margaret, Im so excited to share this with you & anyone else who wants to share in my joy ❤️🔥 I'm fortunate to be teaching a crochet class to recovering addicts soon, giving them something productive to do with their time & that they can be proud of for achieving AND creating something beautiful for themselves or someone else. Because it was given to me a little over 1 ½ years ago 🙏 thank God. I got so many great tips for teaching, as I'm at an intermediate stage myself, certainly not as professional as yourself. I wanted to thank you & again, share my joy 🥰
What a happy story to wake up to this morning! Thank you, Rachel, and congratulations on your own achievements! Several of my tutorials have pattern-reading lessons built into them. I love these because once I learned to read a pattern, a whole world of creativity opened up! I'm glad I have something helpful to share with you and have fun with your classes! Brilliant,,I love the idea of fudgeing
Fudging. Yes... you can't fudge in math or science but in arts and crafts, it can lead to wonderful new ideas, too!
Thank you so much for these exceptional instructions and amazing graphics. I'm looking forward to crocheting lovely hats and beanies that fit properly.
You are so welcome! And then you for the kind comments!
What a great video.....lots of fantastic information...thanks so much!!!!!!
Happy crochet 🧶💙🧶
Happy new year!!!!
Happy new year, Lory, and thanks for the kind words!!
Thank you so much for this information it was very helpful 😊
Wow, you are amazing! Very clear, helpful instructions. You’re an awesome instructor!
What a lovely compliment! Thank you! I was a teacher so I take those sweet words to heart!
Very helpful! First, I usually guess when I need to quit increasing on hats (I often use my handspun, which is hard to be consistently worsted weight, or DK, or whatever), and almost ALWAYS have to fudge decreasing or increasing along the straight part, so I very much appreciate your chart of measurements. Second, I'm helping two friends learn crochet (I may not be the best teacher, but oh well!), and your diagram on understanding the making of a circle will come in very handy as a visual aid. THANK YOU!!!
I'm so glad I had something helpful to share! Look in the description box and you'll see my Crochet Tutorial Playlist. There's a Preemie Hat Crochet tutorial that is great for beginners. You can use that one as a visual aid for your students, too! (And now that you have chart, you can make that hat any size you want!)
Hello Margaret🌞
I've crochet for years. You really explain and instruct information very well. My challenge has been all of these yarn weights with some of these patterns. Believe a lot of the designers don't pattern test. Back in the day we didn't have 7 weights of yarn. Really enjoy your channel. One thing you post with relative information!!!!
Thank you!! Be bless(family)with the best year ever🤗🤗
What a lovely compliment, Terri! Thank you! Well, now that you have all this info, yarn weight will never trip you up! (At least with hats, that is... garments are another story!)
Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing your expertise!
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful, Renee!
You are an amazing woman. This was so helpful with my hat making. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
im·per·cep·ti·ble! I love it!
Well.... if fudging isn't imperceptible, then it ceases to be fudging and then becomes an error! Right?
Awesome!!! You’re a great teacher ❤️🙏🏽
Sorry for the delayed response! (vacation!) Thank you so much for your kind words, Merissa! Glad I had something helpful to share!
Fantastic teacher!!
Thank you! 😃
BEST tutorial ever! Thank you ❤️ new sub
What a lovely compliment! Thank you, Melodee! Glad I had something helpful to share!

I just found your channel and I love it! You are awesome!
What a lovely compliment, Jill! Thank you!
Great video as always
Thank you, Joan!
Well done!
Thank you, Patty!
Margaret I've been watching a lot of your hat videos, old and new. Seeing all the pretty pompoms you have made and I would like to request that you might do a video making your pompoms.

Thx so much Margaret!! Your video has helped me greatly! I'm not a "math" person, but with the help of your charts (& comments), I know I can do this!! Thanks again! 💗💗💗
Glad it was helpful, Dee Dee! I'm not a math person either hence all the visuals I provided! There ARE people who size hats based on the measurement of someone's head then you calculate Pi, bla, bla, bla. For me, this is the simplest way!
Thank you so much ,i was getting frustrated at my hat making as I have just started to crochet
So glad I had some helpful information to share, Rani!
Love your teaching style.
Thank you, Renee! It's nice when learning styles and teaching styles align! ❤
What a great video - thank you!

Thank you very much so helpful .. Now it clicks One more thing Always keep notes 💕🌹🙏🏻
I love it when it "clicks," Wendy!! 😍
*THANK YOU FOR SHARING SO MUCH IMPORTANT INFORMATION & I AM VERY HAPPY TO BE A NEW SUBSCRIBER 😊💝!*
Thank you, Beth! Glad I could help!
I own not 1, not 2, but 3 different sets of "hat sizers". The most comprehensive set is one by Babay Fay I bought from Etsy a few years ago. Then there's a similar set (with fewer sizers) from one of the British crochet magazines (could be Simply Crochet, but I'd have to go up to my yarn room & check to be sure). The last one is in a pattern book from Annie's, which just shows the circles to match the top of one's hat against. (With the first 2 sets, you crochet a flat circle until it's the same diameter as the semi-circle at the top of the sizer you've picked, then work straight in pattern until the hat is as long as the sizer is. (I often find I need to switch to a smaller hook for the last couple of rounds, to give the bottom edge just a bit of negative ease.)
Depending on the hat style, that negative ease can be a game changer! I've never seen "hat sizers!" It's probably a good thing because I would have bought them all and probably lost them! I just made notes right on a measuring tape so I wouldn't have to keep up with the hat sizing chart! Ha!
Hi Miss Margaret! I'm sorry I missed this when it came out 9 months ago, which would have helped me before I started making hats from the brim up. Turns out, I prefer that method even though I'm not so fond of the gathers at the top. I count rows, and use a sample hat (and ruler) to size with various yarns. I'm about halfway to my goal making assorted hats for the homeless. Blessings :)
I like making hats bottom-up, too, but there are so many patterns and ideas that are top-down that it's a necessary skill in crochet. I love how you've developed your own system, Kay! There are no rules in crochet (or at least there shouldn't be) so that frees us up for creative solutions and ideas!
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge 🙏🏻🌼
You are so welcome, Kristy! I love education: sharing AND receiving, too!
Thank you so much! This was very helpful.
You're very welcome, Janet! Glad I had a helpful tip or two to share!
Awesome, very helpful video. Thank you! ❤️

Thanks so much Margaret for the "very thorough" explanation ..I really loved the diagrams. That's actually when my mind opened up🤭
