Also, remember that chickens don’t have teeth to grind their food, so grit needs to be given when they have no access to small rocks or pebbles. Chick starter does have grit in it but not enough to digest fresh greens. So offer grit every time u offer greens otherwise the chicks will be unable to break down that food & major health issues will develop. Thanks to videos like this I’ve learned so much on UA-cam about how to care for baby chicks! So thank you for taking the time to share!
Thank you for this information. We're on day 4 of raising our first laying flock (Barred Rocks & Black Australorps). We've got much to learn. I appreciate that you educate the masses on chick care. Subscribed and will now proceed to binge watching your videos to glean your knowledge & experience. Best to you & yours!
I fed ours chopped spinach and was surprised how quickly they ate it. Going to pick some wild comfrey, yarrow, lemon balm, and Oregano for them in about 15 min
Thx alot! Our chics seem to not like the starter feed at times. So when you said clover I immediately ran out back and grab some. They ran to it and started pecking at it. You might've said our chics life. Thx alot
Glad I found your video I asked the kids at tractor supply and they tell me my checks have to be bigger to you eat that stuff like vegetables but you’re right if they were in the wild they would not get bag food
Smart , you also teach them to be great foragers , The cats eat mice /goffers /rats -- chickens eat spiders /bugs/ any thing that moves and looks like food. Great video.
Those mice should watch out for your chickens, too. I know the adults I used to have ate plenty of mice and snakes and even the occasional mole, if it was small enough
Is there a list of what they can & can't eat from your yard? I've got 3 week olds, on dumor chuck start. I've also given them a little grit & crushed meal worms. I'm trying to give them a wide range diet but there's no one list(that I've found yet)
Hey Pete! East TX here! I know I have plenty of clover but I’m not quite sure what chick weed is but I’ll do some research and find out thanks for the info!
Thank you for the video! I'm learning about raising chicks and didn't know you can give fresh yard greens so early after they've hatched. :-) Good to know!
It makes so much sense. If they were under their mama they would run and grab sprigs of greenery and run back under her even in their first few days. Do you see if they prefer one versus the other? Seems they are leaving the clover for last. Subscribed.
Carlota Chmielewski Thank you, I still give them clover, dandelion, curly dock, and chick weed and they eat it all up. I don't see any preference that they might have. But my chicks never had pasty butt because of the good probiotics they eat. Their poop was always firm. Chicks get pasty but when their gut flora is messed up and the poop is more liquid and sticks to their rear ends.
Thanks so much for this! Got three 4 week old Brahmas today. First time chick owner, but I knew just those dry pellets in chick feed wouldn't be the best alone. I'll start giving them turnip greens and whatever else I can find tomorrow to supplement their diets. Have you ever fed chicks/chickens fermented foods like sauerkraut or kimchi?
Glad it was helpful, I've never given them fermented foods before but try just a little and see if they like it. But they will get the bacteria they need for their gut from picking in the dirt and leafy greens.
Thank you Pete, started feeding my chicks diced up baby spinach and the pasty butts went away. I also gave them composting worms from one of my wicking beds. Talk about spoiled chicks.
I am trying to find information about feeding new born chicks a more natural diet. I have bought some certified organic feed for them but I want to mix it with blended microgreens such as sunflower, fenugreek and others…do you have any advice about that please ? Maybe even worms crushed, just want them to have a diet as close to nature as possible. I have a lot of greens growing as well that I could blend in with it all, like kale. I do have chickweed, plantain, and dandelions. Looks from your video, I don’t need to crush any of them. So if you do recommend the sunflower microgreens. Perhaps I don’t need to cut them up? Your advice would be much appreciated as my chicks are just about ready to eat!

I would feed them organic chick starter feed with some greens from around your property. I would wait to feed them worms or treats like meal worms or soldier fly larvae until they are about 4 weeks old. I've never feed them sunflower microgreens but try to memic what they would eat in nature, small seeds, greens, small bugs and small rocks for there gizzards to help them digest better. They do sell chick grit which is smaller than regular grit. Hope this helps.
What kind of food do you have in your feeder? My son is helping to raise the chicks as a homeschool project and I was hoping to let him make their ‘feed’ from scratch with as few ingredients as possible. What are your thoughts on flax seeds (do those need to be ground up prior to feeding them to new hatchlings) - should baby chicks eat this?
I give them organic chick starter crumble that I buy from tractor supply. That would be the best for them because it's formulated for their needs. I have never fed them flax before but if you do, best to grind it just before you feed it to them so it won't go rancid. But after about a week you can give them organic chicken scratch as a treat, you can also buy from tractor supply.
My chick is an abandoned after the mama had her main clutch and I'm having to be mama. So yeah. He's eating worms and millet but I cant get him on greens yet. And he is now. 4th day old and yeah. He will follow me any where.. I believe that my wife and kids love him ALMOST as much as I do.. Any tips on being a daddy bird and getting him to eat greens. Thank you for the video and I fo hope to be a future farmer one day. Lord willing...
They will eventually start eating the greens. We pick clovers from around the property but if yours are eating worms, that a good source of nutrients and probiotics too.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading that's a great piece of information that I haven't heard before on any of these chick raising videos, it really needs to be added to the video in my opinion, because not everyone reads all the comments. Thank u for helping those of us new to the chicken world😊
My chicks are 2 1/2 weeks and started giving them grit (crushed granite) but was wondering if it matters on the size of grit, it's just labeled poultry grit.
You'll have to do some research on that because I've read that it is toxic to birds but I've also read that chickens eat it. I wouldn't feed it to chicks yet but when they get older they should instinctively know whether to eat it or not.
If you have the time, it's best to do it every day, but in an emergency, they can deal with 5 if their bedding is right. Mostly, you don't want to see poo all stuck between their toes

Where can I buy the feeders like yours?
Is it safe or necessary to sprinkle a little DE in the brooder in the bedding?
Very safe.

I'm gonna give mine the asparagus ferns and vetch from the yard. Do you wait until they start pooping, or first thing?

I just got chicks, they are a few weeks old or more now. I’m just wondering when they can eat more than just starter feed? Grubs, worms and greens?
At about four weeks old, they can pretty much eat what ever an adult chicken can eat.

You can if you want to. They do sell chick grit.
My chicken 4 months old doesnt eat greens. What to do?
When do you start chick grit- and is it necessary? And is there a natural alternative??
You need to start them on chick grit right away. Since they don't have teeth, they need the grit in their crop to help digest their food.

I feed mine cannabis leafs
Ah yes. An essential part of every young chick's diet.
Really? How do they like it?
Lol
How about grit so they can digest those greens properly
Yep! I also gave them grit for chicks.
Thanks!
what are some good greens if we were to purchase them at the store? for baby chicks
I would get them something like a spring mix salad and grab a small hand full and chop it up into smaller pieces for them.
Do I mix the grit in their food? Thanks
No, keep it separate and they will take what they need.

Can we see an update their prob so big
Thanks papa!!👌🙃💝😜

Will you provide them with chick grit also?
Yes you could do that also, It would help in their digestion.

You can give them chick starter feed crumbles as their main food and put some greens down for them and let them chose what to eat.
I love chicken no reason to use a lawnmower anymore lol
At what age can they eat leafy greens from the grocery store?
Probably a few weeks.
It look likes moringa leaves. am i right?
No, I picked clover and chick weed that was growing around my house. But I'm sure moringa would be good.
