  • If you ask its not too hard to find an LDS guide that will take you around the various ruins in Mexico. There are some parallels with Christianity that are certainly compelling.

I noticed when the tour went past the temple that had God the Father and his son Jesus Christ who described from above there was a blank third space which had nothing in it. Could that be the Holy Ghost who is a spirit who can't be seen?

The Book of Mormon teaches that the indigenous peoples of the Americas are descended from Hebrews who left Jerusalem in 600 BCE. So strictly speaking, Mormonism teaches The Book of Mormon is a history of all of these people.
That said, these ideas are falling out of fashion with many Mormons as they realise The Book of Mormon is not, in fact, an historical document. One Mormon sect, The Community of Christ, has already abandoned Book of Mormon historicity claims.
The reason The Book of Mormon teaches this is because during the 1800s, when Joseph Smith wrote the book, it was generally accepted among white Americans that all the impressive structures around the Americas were built by an extinct white race. This was thought because indigenous peoples were seen as savage and uncivilised, incapable of building anything impressive. This is obviously racist and untrue, but it was a common idea at the time.

it's their way of trying to make themselves legit. anyone that actually studies history can prove the book of mormon wrong.
