- Indonesia is set to elect a new president on Wednesday. Three candidates are facing off, but with one clear favorite. Prabowo Subianto has the backing of current president Joko Widodo - and is leading the polls. Prabowo has been a staple of Indonesian politics for decades, and is a controversial figure. He has been accused of human rights abuses during Indonesia's dictatorship. His rivals say they will offer the country a needed change.

Prabowo figured out that without Jokowi's approval, he wouldn't stand a chance of winning. That's why he decided to pick Gibran, Jokowi's son, as his running mate. Many Indonesian voters sided with Prabowo not because of him, but because of Jokowi. Whatever Jokowi decides, his supporters are likely to go along with it.

I've been following Indonesian politics, and my understanding is that Jokowi's involvement raises all kinds of ethical issues among intellectuals and politicians (though the populace seem blissfully oblivious) because a President currently still in office should not be overtly supporting one candidate, not to mention that Gibran's selection reeks of nepotism. He's essentially a political nepo baby that Jokowi's using to extend his influence over Indonesian politics because there is no third term.

Look at western countries, they talk about human rights issues but don't want to take responsibility for what they do in ASEAN countries, the Dutch colonized Indonesia for more than 350 years, and hundreds of millions human lives have been taken. The United States colonized Vietnam but they lost the war because of guerrilla warfare techniques, they invaded Iraq and as a result millions of lives simply disappeared.

The answer is why the Indonesian people chose Prabowo Subianto because he is a figure who is definitely not a radical towards a particular religion, you know Indonesia has many tribes, religions and cultures, only Prabowo represents a family with a diverse background. Most of indonesian are not having privileges to understand who he is as a whole. He was involved in notorious "Operation Rose", he's whole campaign ideas are shallow and couldn't explain how to manage some issues and Indonesia (he only used normative, utopian sentences to campaign himself), and he's presidential candidation has some constitutional issues. His VP candidate is a nepo-baby of the current president who's by constitution is underage, yet he could tackle it since the late head of constitutional judge is his uncle LOL. The current president is also using so many loopholes in law to promote Mr. Prabowo and his nepo-baby son. He literally gave some bags of social aid IN FRONT OF PRESIDENTIAL PALACE! And the worst? This social aid budget is SO MUCH BIGGER than Covid-19. I really feel pity for most of Indonesian since their votes for 5-terms presidency could be bribed for only a 5-days food aid.
