I just planted 2 Paw Paw trees, so it will be a while before I will be able to taste one. I grow all kinds of tropical tree in my area, that people tell me won't grow here, but they are. I'm growing Paw Paw trees in Mesa, Arizona in the desert. A friend of mine is already getting fruit from his trees in this area.
Isn't this Richmond, VA? Okay, I see now that it is. I like you, Gabriel. Love your style of doing your video! One of my favorites I've seen. You've represented us well.
Gabriel, I have to thank you for this video it brought back so many childhood memories of my father and I going out pawpaw hunting. That was many moons ago. I lost my dad last July and this just brought back some beautiful memories. Also you described the taste of the fruit perfectly.
I am so sorry to hear about your dad passing Kate. I know that hearing from others about the joy of going out and looking for Pawpaws, those are some awesome memories.
I can't believe I didn't know about these things before today. I found one on the ground in a park and I stepped on it. It was a very ripe pawpaw, with bright orange flesh. I never saw anything like it so I picked it up and gave it a sniff. Smelled like a mango and I was so excited. I looked up and found one on the tree. Still having no idea what it was I took a picture and searched google. After figuring out it was edible I searched the rest of the park and ended up bringing a pile of ripe and near ripe fruits home.
Paw paw island.. AKA BELLE ISLE in Richmond, VA!! I typed in paw paw fruit because I was wondering how yo find some and clicked on this video and whatttt!!! I live in RVA and anna 5 min walk from Belle Isle so this is so fantastic! Thank you for the awesome video! If you see the guy with the flower bike blasting music holla at me!!!
Man ive known about these for 30 years and still havent had one!! Cant wait to eat one because i love chiramoya!! Love your posi vibe bruda! Hitting the sub button! More wild fruit hunting videos!
Thanks for a great video I live in Texas and I never seen a frut like that before until this summer me and my family went to west virginia for vacation to see my wife's family there. One day we went to the river and I saw paw paw tree and don't know what it was so I cut a few to show my wife but they weren't ready yet but next time we go there hopefully we can find some ripen fruit.
I found out about paw paws in October of last year and I finally found some trees by a lake while kayaking. I will be heading straight there when September comes around to try some!
My mammaw had a paw paw tree; some of my fondest memories were late summer days when mammaw would give us a bowl of paw paw. It was SO GOOD. I had no idea how elusive they were. I just took for granted they’d always be there!
Omg I can’t believe you found them in Richmond. So excited as I ate them as a kid in WV and haven’t seen them since. I live in VB and may need to drive up to Richmond where I used to live to do my own search. TY
I saw your vid on how to process them first, cause I found a bunch on an island in my hometown. Then I see this video and you're on the same bridge going to the same island! Small world...
Thank you so much Gabriel for uploading this wonderful video. I have never seen this fruit, in fact never heard about it. Hopefully someday I will taste it. I am from South Asia, but live in New York. Great !!! (y)
i'm moving to Virginia in a couple weeks and I was so excited to learn about this fruit. I want to grow as much fruit as possible. So what do I do? Just walk around the woods looking for them? I'm moving to Lynchburg so there are plenty of outdoor areas and woods
I found my first Indiana Banana today down in Pike Co on the Patoka River. Still early but it was the first time I've found anything on the vine! I was very happy.
Great video and great tips! I live in Southern Ontario, Canada, and we have the common pawpaw here, too... however, on all my hikes, I haven't been able to locate a wild patch! I've only found cultivated examples in parks and such.
Just picked up 5 seedlings at edible landscaping in Afton VA last week. Then yesterday found 3 saplings at a local garden center!! Super excited to get this fruit tree planted by my house!!
Love hunting paw paws and morels in the spring , we have a grove where hundreds fall on the ground in the wild. Those look bigger variety than ones in my neck of va . Take seeds and cover in moss. Put in fridge and in march. Cut seed coat off and plant about an inch deep. Around mid July will see tart of tree. Plant it in yard or large pot. Let it grow
OH boy my mouth is watering !! beautiful fruit and looks delicious !! we buying in the markets fruits from some strange countries !! why not PAW PAW ??
i recently came across these! i live in NEW YORK CITY, i am a curious person and often find myself taking home stuff that i am not familiar, i did some search. I found this in a local botanical garden, i took it come and leave it to dry, or so i thought but instead it got ripped, it smelled like mango, but i did not have the courage to taste it so i threw it out. but i am going to go back and hopefully get some more. i want to try it!
This is a great video, and I used to frequent the island you're at when I lived in Richmond so it's cool to see a video of someone foraging there, but I have to point out... you said you're in "the north" when you're actually in the former capital of the confederacy lol
I know those leaves very well! Had a bunch of these growing by my house, had no idea what they were. Now they're all gone as that land was cleared and apartments have been going up. So sad. I'll have to walk around toward the river and see if there are more there.
Hey bud just a bit of info Richmond Va was the Capital of the Confederacy aka the SOUTH… now i don’t know if you are now from the area just wanted to clarify that. Awesome video and I love pawpaws as well. I’d have to say it taste more like banana/mango/custard.
First time I've ever that such a fruit existed. I googled it and leanred that it gets mushy quickly, explaining why we rarely find them in grocery stores. When can I get them? I live in Georgia so I assumed we have them somewhere in the state.
it blew my mind as soon as I saw the leaves, I've seen so many of these trees before, and if I ever did see any of the fruit I must of assumed it was just walnuts
I’ve only had a pawpaw once when a customer at the tractor dealership where I worked brought some in. I thought it tasted like bananas and caramel. Absolutely delicious. However, in spite of them growing wild in the Ozarks, they’re hard to find unless you can pick them yourself due to the relatively short shelf life. Just like figs. 😔
Found a grove of PawPaw trees along a lake here in northeast Pennsylvania this week on a walk. I noticed no baby green fruit on any of the branches. I know its only july and the trees have a way to go. I,m 60 years of age now and I never gave any thought that they existed here. I will def look for fruit this october.
Hello everyone. i live in houston Texas. I have ordered 6 plants of pawpaw and already put them all in the ground. Actually, i only want to plant two but i heard that the bare root hard to plant. do you know that paw paw can grow in houston tx. I live in the Medical center area.
I looked at your video and went outdoors i think I seen some leaf s but had no fruit on the ground or in the tree I live in va. And I think the animals got to them first because I didn't see any of them
Gabriel, do you think I could start a tree or two from the seeds? I have started many persimmon trees from seeds. My first ones are 15-20 feet tall this year and loaded with persimmons. Do you eat them? I would love to trade seeds with you and try to start a Pawpaw on my property and you could start persimmons on yours!! My dad loved them and remembered them fondly from his childhood here in Indiana.
Where do you live Susan? Most varieties will grow in zone 5-9 and you might be able to go beyond that in either direction. You can buy cultivated varieties that grown from cuttings and grafted to root stock. Then you kind of know what you have, where it will grow, and what the fruit is like. You want to protect young trees from over exposure to sun for the first year or two. You also need to have multiple trees for pollination. For the best pollination and fruit production you would want trees from multiple varieties of 3 or more. You can certainly grow from any seed too and Baker's Creek sells them and I grew a couple this year. Just remember when trading pawpaw seeds that they die if they dry out and when shipping them you should keep them wet, maybe in the crisper drawer of your fridge if you are waiting to plant. That is all I know. I am sure there is a lot more to it.
Mother earth is crazy generous. I've known about them for a number of years. But this year they are plentiful. All that rain, I guess. If you have a swimming pool net available, that can work great for reaching high up. Shake the paw paws, they drop right in the net.
Nope, they are funny and ripen faster than bananas when they are ripe, but dont pick them hard either or they wont ripen at all. Gotta come East of the Mississippi river in mid to late september to get these gems. They do freeze well though.
@@Ragenzen Apricot seeds are very good in moderation. They have an arsenic substance in them that only is released in the presence of an enzyme cancer cells put out. They are never sold in stores. To me it looks like my jackfruit inside. Except smaller & hopefully lighter. Processing that dinosaur fruit takes time, but worth it. I was told they perish fast & reason not sold by grocers. 😐 umm. Well I've been wanting to eat pawpaw since a teen, when I 1st heard about the native 🍌 fruit. I will hv to grow myself 🤔 Wonder what natural pest are eating the leaves 🍃 in that video. Saw the holes. Thank you for the fruit hunt
Do squirrels also go after the fruits? I ask because where I live, squirrels go after all fruit and nut trees and they can make it difficult to get a good harvest!
Found a great spot and showed some friends them today. Being based in Richmond would you wanna meet up and teach us some more? Who knows I could know I trick or two from this area you don’t know

Very cool man
i have a big paw paw patch on my property and I think they taste like banana custard......yummmmmm
Where can you get paw paws?? Can you order them any place
I’m in Massachusetts and I’m near a lake. Will pawpaws be in that area?

@@robertm4050 Thank you! I have found a tree and seeds and I am planting them this Fall. I am in Indianapolis...I think zone 5
I think they like the shade
Pawpaw seeds need to be stratified in your fridge before they will germinate.
I think we have a tree, but they're more brown and bumpy. The leaves look similar for sure. Any ideas?
Cut one open and see if it looks the same
Wad a piece of green leaf up between your fingers. Smell it. It should smell reminiscent of cucumber.
I heard that these are the same thing as papaya. Is that true or false?

I am not sure about that Wylliam. I know that they do not travel very well so I would guess your best bet would be to find some frozen.
They’re too perishable.
Nope, they are funny and ripen faster than bananas when they are ripe, but dont pick them hard either or they wont ripen at all. Gotta come East of the Mississippi river in mid to late september to get these gems. They do freeze well though.
Im honestly about to buy a little tree and pot plant it in th back yard so when i move i can take it with me
yoyo was that the footbridge going to brown's island??

Hello, is it possible to grow pne of the tree's on Minnesota?
Might as well try!! I think it will they grow in Canada as well but maybe that's only Atlantic seaboard Canada
Im trying it right now just planted two of them by st cloud mn
Will it grow in West London? 🇬🇧
I think it will!
They will also grow in the midwestern states
Yes! The Indiana Banana I remember it being called
What does the seed taste like? I wonder if they have any medicinal qualities?
I haven't tried biting into the seed. But the major medicinal qualities are actually found in the bark of the tree.
The seeds are considered toxic.
This is 11 months late, but the seeds have a muscle relaxant toxin in them (probably already in use for some medicines).

The fruit has 39% of the recommended daily iron, which is unusual for fruit.
I like the taste but they are about 8o% seeds. It was very hard to find a spoonful without a bunch of seeds.

I ate this and now I have paw pads on my hands and I can reflect stuff with them

Can i buy paw paw trees from you???
Unfortunately all of the paw paws I've found so far bear no fruit. But I'll keep looking.
In Missouri they're endangered and it's illegal to climb or damage them to harvest.
I used to sing the song but never knew what it was.
I live in Wisconsin and I feel like I have seen them somewhere, without knowing what it was.
Yes! They grow all the way up to canada :)
I live in Richmond VA and am very curious to see what these taste like. Which island on the James did you walk to
they might have it at ur local botanical garden, i live in New york City and i found one at a botanical garden here! i did not know u could eat it, i am curious so i took it home and open it, it smells like mango but i did not taste it, i am going back to take it haha
