I've been harvesting Paw Paw's for years. Love to freak out the rich tourists on kayak tours by showing them and discussing the glorious fruit! Tennessee creeks are chock full of paw paws.
I grew up with the folk song "picking up Paw Paws put em in your pocket" and after 55 years I finally see one. Thank you
Way down yonder in the Paw Paw patch,. I learn that in 3rd grad and also after 55 year's first time ever seen one!
Pocket full of mush?😨. Clara Hearne Elementary school Roanoke Rapids North Carolina THANKSDavid
Paw Paw's are delicious! When your in the Appalachian Mountains during this time of the year they grow all over the place in the woods but primarily a creek will be close. Great snack when hiking. Thanks for the upload and sharing!
I'm 56 and actually found my first one last week kayaking the Susquehanna River. Didn't eat it because, well I didn't know what it was. Now that I do, I'm going back for them! Hopefully they are still good. Thanks for the information.
A man detecting on the East end of Folly Island at Charleston SC dug up a cannon this morning. Same general area that a tropical storm uncovered a stack of cannon balls several years ago. They put up Police tape. They will probably call in someone to remove it like they did the cannon balls.
My husband and I raise PawPaws in Rhode Island. They do well here in Southern RI, close to the ocean. The Colonists wiped them out here when they cut down all the forests for farmland. We started with small trees from a friend and mail ordered others. The seeds must be kept damp prior to planting. Maybe we will bring some to the Pound the Ground Adirondack hunt in October. Hope to see you there!
Do you raise them from diapers until college?
Your channel was the first I’ve ever seen of these. Definitely hope to find them someday and try them! Great video Chigg!
I look forward to the paw-paw video every year!
great timing we just did a hike today and one last week and ate a few. We even brought some home for later. Love them. I live in central Va.
Keep up you're videos we love them! I learn a whole lot from you for looking for stuff
Thank you, Professor Aquachigger, for teaching us about the lovely pawpaw fruit! I had to smile when I saw it was about pawpaws, because we all know how much you love 'em! Glad 'tis the season, and that you had some of that nice, sweet juice running down your chin. 😸 How lucky that you can get out to find them. 😸
Biggest patch ive ever seen. I just found some in the head of a holler here in w.v, i got a couple saplings yo transplant back at my house
I had have too much fun saying Pawpaw. I'm a Wisconsinite and have never heard of pawpaw's until this channel came across.
Victoria E , I've seen them growing in Lafayette In, Perdue campus. Not sure of their northernmost range.
@@nj1639 I've got family down there. One of these days I should ask em about it. My cousin Candi is the nature person down yonder lol. I'm more... well not lol.
The feeding habits of the North American wild aquachigger. Very interesting.
Thank you! 👏🏻😁. I love that you made this video....and yes, I know you make one about paw paws every year...but man! Would I love to try that one day. It is just fascinating to me and they look delicious!
Chig - I love them too and cannot wait until they are ripe every year! Mid-Ohio Valley ones taste like a cross between bananas and oranges & sometimes just super sweet mangoes that smell so rich and fruity it is hard to believe. Native Americans and early settlers in the Mid-Ohio Valley ate them and used them in the process to make jerky.
We have Pawpaw trees in our yard. Started out about 20 yrs ago. Mom-in-law bought 2 trees (she said a Male and female). Now we have several trees. Would love someone to come take a few of the trees. They produce a ton of fruit each year
I had a IPA that was brewed with pawpaws in DC a few years ago and it was amazing. It was a very small batch a craft brewer made
Nice treat Chigg. Good to see you out in the pawpaw patch once again. Delicious! Have a great day!
I love paw paws. Most of them have died out in Eastern Ky. We used to get buckets of them every year. We are lucky to find any now.
Would love to see a video on how you conduct your research. I know most people don’t like to give away their secrets but if your will to show us how you find areas to hunt that would be awesome. Love watching your videos whenever I’m not able to go out and hunt myself. Keep them coming and stay safe out there.
I have 2 cultivated trees in my front yard I planted 6 years ago. Just producing this year. Can hardly wait! (One is a Susquehanna, and the other is a Mango cultivar.)
I'm going to have to do some traveling - I wants me some paw paw. 😃
hey chigg! my name’s breeuna and i just wanted to say that i’ve been watching your channel for about 4 years now and every video is such a fun and exciting thing in my day. i live in solomon’s md! you should do a small meet and greet in maryland. would love to meet you
I was detecting a creek a couple days ago and found a few that sunk down to the creek bed. When I picked it up it was still relatively solid so I split it open out of curiosity and it smelled sweeter than any fruit I've ever had. Very interesting fruit the pawpaw...
Thanks chigg, almost forgot to check my patch I found in Missouri on wilsons creek
You one knowledgeable man . I enjoy your information about this Fruit
We went camping in Southeastern Oklahoma over the weekend and they were good to go! Really tasty!
Paw paws usually don't get ripe here in Ohio until late Fall before the frost. My grandma used to make Paw Paw Pie with them...delicious.
I already watch you for metal detecting, but I go to get tips on growing pawpaw trees and there you are again!
I'm from PA, so I've never heard of Pawpaws, but they look and sound like they'd be delicious.
Neat video. Thanks for sharing.
Alright chiggster you finally get to eat some PawPaws!! They look like good eating !! Never had one and I love mangoes.
Pawpaws, mulberries, service berries, black berries, blue berries raspberries, dewberries and wild strawberries. If you are out in the wild in Maryland, no need to pack a lunch if you know what to look for :)
Thanks again for spreading the good news about the amazing PawPaw!
Cool first time to see a Paws but it was good I enjoyed watching it I learned something today I will tell my daughter you stay blessed and I'll see you on the next
Wow this is Cool! Why is it I was born and raised in Pennsylvania have always been an outdoorsman and hunter and have always enjoyed talking to old people but I have never heard of PawPaws.
Thanks for showing a little area to find paw paws it might come in handy
How did I miss this paw paw video? I just love ya chigg!!❤❤
We always called them Indiana Bananas, love them haven't had one in years though, been livin' down here in Florida.
Lol that's what my comment said. Here near clay/vigo county I love to deer hunt near them. I'll be in Florida soon running Capt crabb fishing charters lol. That's my retirement idea anyway.
It is near impossible to not come away a sticky mess when you eat paw paws. Good times!!!
We have a town named Paw Paw here in Michigan. Apparently the fruit used to grow in riotous abundance in the area. Now, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who even knows what a paw paw is. The trees are all long gone.
Shared to Thinking Long Term on Facebook. Keep up the good work Hauss.
We were at the Monocacy on the canal yesterday and I hit the motherload. Yum!
They grow herein Southern Ohio but are getting harder to find. A number of years ago we were riding along the C&O trail and camping and came across a Paw Paw patch I could smell them before we saw them!
I have never in my life heard so much about pawpaws since I subscribed to your channel a year and a half ago. Nor have I ever eaten a pawpaw but do remember a childhood song.
“Paw-Paw Patch
Where, oh where, oh where is Susie?
Where, oh where, oh where is Susie?
Where, oh where, of where is Susie?
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.
Chorus:
Picking up paw-paws; put 'em in a basket.
Picking up paw-paws; put 'em in a basket.
Picking up paw-paws;put 'em in a basket.
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.
Come along, boys, and let's go find her.
Come along, boys, and let's go find her.
Come along, boys, and let's go find her.
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch”
I think all of us sang this song in south central Ontario Canada never knowing what a pawpaw was!
Thanks Beau for giving meaning to this song sung so long ago.
"Saddle up, girls, an' let's go with 'em.
Saddle up, girls, an' let's go with 'em.
Saddle up, girls, an' let's go with 'em.
Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch."
Really enjoyed, thank you
Beau it's good to think about Paw Paw's once and while I even think there's a song about the Paw Paw Patch!!!; )
Richard Warnock way down yonder in the paw paw patch.
@@zekesgirl100 that's it good someone knows!!!
Great info! Thank you!
Thank you for this I never knew this. I often use the bark for cordage if I need some while I’m out in the woods pretty strong to.
Thanks for this vid Chigg! I was hiking near the canal yesterday and saw some paw paw trees and decided to try one! I don’t think the one I got was quite ripe yet but it was still pretty good!
We have them here in Ohio/ Kentucky area. Very good eating, even have a pawpaw festival in middle of September !!! Thanks Chigg for video 👍
I live in west Central Ohio. My dad introduced me to pawpaws when I was a boy about 60 years ago. We would walk in the woods and he would tell me about the different things in nature. Great fun. The pawpaws were Ohio bananas. Haven't had one in years though.
First time seeing or even hearing about these. That's amazing,, thanks for all the information. Maybe one day I may go see if I can find some and try it. Thanks again and God bless.
Idk why I just love the way you say "paw paw" I like your American accent!
I love them, they grow well here in Southern Indiana.
Great vid!
WOW!!! Those are huge for paw paws
We have them in Clay Alabama and was a treat when they would produce when we was kids
Never had a Pawpaw before! Sounds delicious! I live in North East Florida and have never seen them in the woods.
Thanks Chigg!
I live in North East Florida also in a rural area I have never seen a pawpaw in the woods in this area either. I wonder if I scattered pawpaw seeds close to the St. Johns river if they would grow. I would love to try. Chigg would you be willing to share some seeds?
@@kgal63 I'm in Middleburg, That's a good idea to plant seeds near the Saint John's, Green cove Springs comes to mind!
Ps. I subscribed to your channel, Keep in touch about the pawpaw seeds.
Wow! Thank you for sharing I have not ever heard of paw, paw 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟❤️🇺🇸
Wow never heard or seen a Paw Paw before. Great video and thanks for showing.
Look up The Paw Paw Patch song on UA-cam. It is a traditional Appalachian folk song and we used to sing it at Scout Camp. I never tasted one but they do grow in Missouri where I live.
Thanks for the info. I will look it up.
Loved foraging the pawpaw's in Maryland when I lived there. Have yet to see them anywhere else in the wild outside that state after years of foraging
I heard about it in the anti cancer list. I never seen nor eating one.
I want to go searching now.
Thank you👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Awesome! I live in Kentucky and it looks like the trees grow here. My kids and I will have to find a tree so we can try the fruit.
Oh, man, those look sooooo good! I've never had one...I'm going to see if they grow down here in Georgia!!!
York, Pennsylvania has a PawPaw festival this weekend. There are a few orchards in the area starting to cultivate them and there are nurseries selling saplings. We are going Saturday for some.
I live in East Texas and my wife and I love the paw paws around us.
Don't believe I'm likely to find a pawpaw patch in Alaska unless climate change gets a lot worse. Fun watching you enjoy something so basic with a child like glee!
In Australia/NZ "Pawpaws" are a different fruit. I think they might be called Papaya's in North America.
NO those are not papaya to small these look more than mango fruit.
@@jenniferrodriguez3614 No I know, I meant what we in Australia call "pawpaws" are called papayas over in America (we don't get these fruits in Australia, closest we have are actual mangoes).
I’ve found paw paws in the Hoosier national forest here in southern Indiana love them!
Make banana bread with them
No papa bread😂👍
Only half modern bananas not common brand or wild which might make it nice
Checked my patches on the 9th, 1 out of 50 are ripe, Eastern Kansas bottom grounds.
Pawpaw ice cream is the $**t. pawpaw butter is good on buiscits. Just sayin...
I had Paw Paw Beer last year. It was the best beer i ever had and i have had a few lol. The brewer got the Paw Paws in Halifax, PA. It was amazing.
I'm about to be a paw paw 👍
Yall spread the seeds around and help proliferate this awesome fruit
They are delicious the farmer down the road always had them. I 💚 paw paws
That is so cool!!!
Lol chigger.... you’re the best.
Thanks Sr. I just get some yesterday.
I use to live in the hollers of west virginia, born and raised. I would hike trails from late August to early October and pick pawpaw. I remember the first time I tried a pawpaw the tast was so amazing ot was almost intoxicating. I live in south Florida now and the one thing I miss is the pawpaws😭... Well and the mountains.
These fruits are the Ohio state fruit and yet I have never had one!! I guess I need to do some more hiking!
I read once that George Washington would eat PawPaws for dessert.
Those seeds kind of remind me of custard apple seeds. Lol. I don't know if you get them over there. Lol. Plus, what we call pawpaws, you call papayas. Lol. Have a good one, Beau. 👍👍👍👍👍🇦🇺
I'm pretty sure pawpaw is in the same family as custard apples. This is the only member of that family native to the US.
@osmadchlo Yes same family. Annonaceae. Another member of the family is the famed Cherimoya noted for being the tastiest fruit known to man.
@Cathy Benson no papaya is in a totally different family called Carica. I see the resemblance though even in the way the tree grows.
I've found a few paw paw trees in southern Michigan. The farthest north I have found them.
I wish to get some of those live seeds. Heard they have to refrigerate 3mths to grow. Thank you for posting.
I love pawpaws I first tried them in 2016. I wish I knew where to go now since being in North Carolina.
That's awesome! 👍
They are all over my driveway. Yum. 1.5 miles of paw paw.
Only gentle shaking of trees to get ripe fruit to drop.... vigorous shaking gets unripe bitter fruit to fall.
Sometimes. 🐷
They are found in abundance in Indiana, Kentucky & Tennessee..They are called the Indiana Banana. They are made into pies & breads.. The Native Americans ate them. You will find trees planted around older homes. Just like you find hickory, walnut & persimmon trees.
Chigg, do a pawpaw compilation with the number of times you said pawpaws. Kind of like the "so" thing a while back. LOL. Great insight and adventure.
Asimina triloba belongs to the genus Asimina in the same plant family (the Annonaceae) as the custard-apple
Greatest video on youtube
Hey man good video thank you for it's I enjoyed it and those Popeye tree things you talking about well here in Jersey I don't see them
In Louisiana, where I'm from, a PawPaw and MawMaw are what we call our grandparents.
Haha! Me Too!....Vicksburg
You can make jam, freeze the flesh or freeze them whole to extend the season.
Pawpaw jam is amazing
I live in Pittsburgh pa and I have found a paw paw tree was the first it in I have ever seen on in my life
Very cool
Does Chigg even pack a lunch on his adventures?
Doug Alexander not when the paw paws are ripe
Only if he can wash his poor paws.
