Is Your Shampoo DAMAGING Your Hair? Ingredients Explained...(Part 1: Surfactants)

  • Have you ever bought a shampoo, looked at the ingredients on the back, and just started wondering...what the heck are all these chemicals? Are they safe? WHY are all these in here?
    These next series of videos are meant to explain the ingredients that go into shampoo and conditioners, what they do, and why they're there.
    This is Part 1: Surfactants. What are they? Why are these detergents in your shampoo? Are they safe? Which surfactants should you avoid? Are sulfates the same thing as surfactants? I answer all these questions and more in this video.
    I want you to be as educated as possible when shopping for your hair care products. I also want to separate hype from facts.

    Sodium Laureth Sulfate is a Gentle, Surfactant / Cleansing Agent it gets a bad reputation from outdated or misleading information. Adding other ingredients will make it less stripping and give a better, more effective more easily rinsed cleanser. Non - Sulfate type surfactants can have a naturally higher pH (9 to 11) and can swell the hair fiber even in a shampoo with a ‘Balanced pH’. Sodium Laureth Sulfate properly formulated and used in a balanced formula can both outperform in cleaning and be gentler on the hair and scalp.

    I have used many years sulfate-free shampoos and they makes my hair flat after a few hours and flatter and greasy the next day. I have thick but super straight hair. But if I use a shampoo with ALS, my hair has more volume even at the second day, my hair feels so light en clean and it is easy to style my hair into waves (heatless). So perhaps it is better FOR ME to use a shampoo WITH sulfate. Everyone’s hair is unique. Just use what the best is for your hair. I’m happier with hair full of volume than hair that is super flat. Sorry for my English if they are mistakes in my comment😊, I’m Turkish who lives in Belgium😊 greetings❤

    For greasy hair or greasy roots and dry ends, I wouldn't recommend sulfates, because the more you wash your hair, the greasier it will become. So try milder surfactants and washing less often.
    For normal hair, you can still use it but less often. If you wash it 7 times per week with harsher surfactants, it's applying 7 times something aggressiv. If only once per week, it's 7 time less!!!
    If you do this, it's better to move gently towards milder ones and more time inbetween two washings or you hair will need an adapting phase where it will be awful.
    Kind reminder: you need only to wash the roots.

    • @GoodVibesOnly23
      @GoodVibesOnly23 6 місяців тому

      That’s not totally true. I’ve used many years only natural shampoos without silicones and sulfates, and my hair is still greasy the next day after washing it. When I wash it now with shampoo with ALS as ingredient, my hair is still clean and fresh the second day after washing without itchiness. Everyone’s hair and scalp is unique. Some people are happy with sulfate-free shampoo and some with sulfate shampoo. It’s that simple.

    Erm, just a couple of quick questions for anyone who would care to answer:
    How much hair fall is normal for when you're using a bristle comb brush? Also, does it work with thick wavy hair?
    Second set:
    I'm currently a teenager, and I have to ask; how quickly does hair grow back after it falls out? When I brush I currently have about 3-4 hairs every time, and I previously made the mistake of brushing my hair while wet - slightly dry and not stopping my brushing when I feel a knot tangling it. A couple more hairs come off when that happens, usually 1-2. Does age matter in terms of the growing process? Aside from brushing I take care of my hair and wash it every other day. I just need help with these things.

    • @Preacher_.
      @Preacher_. 4 роки тому

      You're a smart man for no longer brushing your hair when wet.
      Before you go reading this essay I wrote, just know that Trav has a bunch of videos out there that cover everything you've brought up, I'll try to find them for you- but just know your best bet is to binge watch his channel real quick.
      And you definitely want to ease through "knots" in your hair. Meaning when you come across one, don't just slowly try to push through It- instead take the brush out of the hair and bruh that section again, but this time start closer to the ends on the hairs, below the knot,instead of starting at your scalp. If it's a really bag tangle, isolate it with your fingers and separate the hairs manually.
      The risk isn't so much that you'll pull the strand out, but instead that you'll stretch those tangled hairs and break them off half way down.
      Take one of your hairs and just yank on either end until it snaps, then take a look at how kinky and wirey it looks.
      You lose about a hundred hairs a day, seeing a few in the comb or brush (wether nylon, boars hair, or otherwise) is normal.
      Tweezing/pulling out a hair isn't necessarily going to prevent it from regrowing, tension Alopecia on the other hand(tying your hair up really tight, slicking it back with gel and a boars hair brush, putting constant tension on the hair follicle) is going to cause near permeant hair loss as the hair follicle dies overtime from stress.

    • @Preacher_.

      These two will probably answer most of your questions.

      @@Preacher_. Actually I'm taking that into account. I usually either wear my hair semi tight and if that gets too much then I just wear a half up half down thingamajigger. Also I don't use gel. I usually just do a coconut oil shampoo conditioner combo every other day and put a little coconut oil in my hair by spraying it. That is a leave in product, and that is usually what I use.

    • @Preacher_.
      @Preacher_. 4 роки тому

      @@dumbolddoor9882 Idk which video it is, but Trav goes over the science behind hair oils & leave in products.
      You can over do it very easily, and that can cause the sebum to build up in the follicle and on the scalp(the soil of the hair) and actually weaken the hard scaley cuticles that hold your hair in the follicle.
      I gave myself some tension Alopeciaby tying my man bun way too high, and way too tight. And it's something I wore M-F as a professional look. I'm missing about. 1/3- 1/2 of an inch on my entire right temple. And it's exactly where I used to feel tugging and tension when I'd tie up my hair using a pomade/leave in olive oil based gel and a boars hair brush... I was slowly strangling those follicles... Thankfully it's unnoticeable with my hair down.

    • @Preacher_.
      @Preacher_. 4 роки тому

      @@dumbolddoor9882 What blew my mind was that there are cuticles, in the same form that you have on your fingers and toes, that are soely responsible for protecting your hair, and keeping it in its follice.
      The video Trav has on that opened my eyes to how much F'ing damage I was doing to my hair with how I was styling it, and the amount and *TYPE* of products I was using and *leaving* in my hair for days on end.

    Hi, I have a question. Is Sodium Lauroyl Methylaminopropionate a mild surfactant too? Or is it harsh for the hair/scalp?

      Sulfates don’t irritate everyone’s skin. I’d more pay attention to your hair shaft and protein loss. That’s where they can be more damaging.

    You didn’t cover Sodium C12-13 Pareth Sulfate. I think. Is this Sulfate harsh?

      Cantu. It's intended for black hair, but can be used on any dry curly hair, just don't use too much conditioner or leave-in.

    Hey guys, look, im very confused when i supposed to wash my hair. But first. Do you mean washing with takin a shower and gettin the hair wet or usin shampoo into it.??
    im currently in my long journey, my hair is 1 year and a half long, the longest i had, goin for the 2 years look. I had been washin my head, 2 to 3 times a week, but i kept puttin wet my hair the 7 days of the week. "7 days of shower with wet hair and just 2 or 3 shampoo into it". But now that i had my hair long enough, i can do a bun and cool stuff with it, the people with long hair around me told me that not every single day u have to wash it "putting wet ur hair" just 2 to 3 times, puttin it wet and shamppo it too. Help plssss

      I have pretty straight, medium-coarse, medium-thick hair that's about 9 inches long on top now. I allow my hair to get wet every time I'm in the shower (which is nearly everyday) and only shampoo and then condition my hair twice a week. The shampoo/conditioning process is what I count as "washing" and that's what I see others usually mean too. Oh, also I usually use a hair mask/deep conditioner instead of my normal conditioner on my second wash of the week.

    Have Keratin Treated long hair (normally very frizzy), have been told NO surfactants/sulfantes or Sodium of any kind. Do you know if this is true & do you have a shampoo/conditioner recommendation for Keratin treated hair?

    • @TravWhiteStyle
      @TravWhiteStyle  4 роки тому +1

      I’d probably go for nonionic surfactants like decyl glucoside. Also keep in mind if sodium *something* is in it but it’s not the main detergent, it’s probably used more as an emulsifier and foam booster than a cleansing agent

    • @yipp_yippee
