Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm in my 4th year of homeschooling but the first year of doing a lot of history. I'm so worried of teaching history in a way that isn't truthful. I feel so encouraged after watching this. Praying that God is able to help me teach history in a way that is positive and hopeful but while still exposing the kids to the true brokenness that has been a part of history since The Fall.

I really enjoyed hearing your perspective on journeying through history with your kids and that you are using the curriculum as a tool 👌🏾 I found black history cards which I plan to order soon and add to our CC stash. It’s exciting tweaking curriculum to meet the unique needs for our families. Love what you are doing with your family and I just had to stop by and say I appreciate very much your approach.

Thank you so much for your time in reviewing this! And thank God for your viewers who commented supplementary suggestions. Age-appropriate truth is my goal with history as I plan to use TGATB (we like the teaching approach). Both public school and Christian curriculums tend to water down the sins of historical figures, while others tend to be omitted altogether. It’s a shame. I hope Jenny Phillips and company will consider entire History courses/units with subject focuses like they did with Science, such as Native American/Aboriginal History, Black History, and Asian History as well as doing them from these people groups’ perspectives. In the meantime, I’m glad there is a community that is bringing this up and discussing what can be used to add to what is given.

We are using Our History Revealed: African Americans in U.S. History part 1 by Morah Sheli for my 6th grader. It's a literature based study of early U.S. history that included tons of stories and books that include our history. It's totally open and go which I love. It's a lot of books, but I'm looking forward to diving in and learning with my son.

I think when a mom/teacher disagrees with a curriculum, it reveals to the student that not all sources of information are to be trusted and to seek out the truth for themselves.

I agree! We aren't raising my 10 year old as any religion...but she will learn them. So many sources in this world are so so inaccurate. We are HUGE history buffs and disagree with quite a bit here but its a great basis. My husband and I have added to each lesson. This is such a basic, wholesome curriculum for getting kids to learn the basics. Historical debates come later with more knowledge that younger kids don't understand. We simply used the materials to create our own. I am a giant nerd so rewriting, creating and arranging my own stuff to add to this is strangely enjoyable haha. Hopefully soon we can introduce sources that totally contradict each other and learn how to sort through contradicting evidence. Its so refreshing to have someone comment about finding truth themselves when it comes to commenting on a religious curriculum. My husband was raised devout Catholic...he believes in many things and the one thing he always says is you have to take religion with a grain of salt. My child takes things very literal so I was afraid of a religious text.

Thanks for sharing! I understand your tangent too. I love the history but we teach the truth (good and bad). I love that you are not a slave to the curriculum, because I have learned to not be as well. We supplement very heavy when it comes to history, especially as a family of color. I need a spine when it comes to history too and I just go from there! LOL Skipping around is something I have done too with the history, taking certain things out, skipping certain sections...etc. And, don't get me started on Christopher Columbus in history. LOL I actually got a book that teaches the truth and discussed with my children. I was shocked that they were so interested and it didn't bother them to hear the truth. I love that you are doing this series and have enjoyed each and every one. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing how you approach history. I love that you choose what is best for your kiddos at their stages rather than power through every page. You can get years of use and the kids keep loving the content. You always having a solid, thoughtful approach to subjects, and I find it so inspiring to watch your videos.
Also, “flusteredness” made me laugh. :)

Ok, @TheFallCoFamily! So, this review was AH-Mazing!!!
Syreena, you have answered SO MANY questions for me and given me great perspective. I really appreciate how you handled the “difficult” subject and the elephant in the room for people of color who might decide to use this curriculum. The way you maneuver through using TGTB History is just beautiful and really what prepared curriculum should be- a framework or jumping point for us to build upon and personalize for our families.
Thank you so much for this reminder and your honesty. This video was both Good & Beautiful. 😉
I am so blessed to have found your channel. You are such an inspiration.
Seriously, if it were at all possible, I could just give you the biggest hug of gratitude right now. So, sending it to you through this post and hope you feel the love. ❤️

I understand this thought process. Questioning everything is what keeps an open mind and allows us to see as many sides of things as possible. What I like about you are saying is that this curriculum seems to lay out a very "Good & Beautiful" world and us as parents can decide how much of the "ugly" we show our children. It gives the parents the power to know what is appropriate for their child/children. I just got this curriculum and am starting our homeschool in January, so I am coming from a place of ignorance for the most part. I love your videos and it has really helped me gain the courage to start my homeschool. I can relate to you on so many levels ( I have two boys 7, 4, and a baby girl 1). Thank you for your videos!

I love history!!! Thanks for such a thorough review. I had to laugh at 31:56. I'm glad it's working for you. I like the spiral approach she takes. I really wanted to try it, but it's not diverse enough. I found the lack of diversity insulting. She had 30 people working on this and no one thought they needed to do better? I know one can find tons of resources, but I couldn't use it as a spine.
I understand your concerns about your kids. Our history in particular, can be hard on kids when it's approached traditionally. An approach you might want to try with your kids is to begin black history in Africa where we weren't enslaved. Morah Sheli has tour of Africa for young children. They get to learn about black people in history prior to the slave trade. In a sense, the good, beautiful, and then ugly. It's a balanced approach that I have enjoyed using with my son.

Do you by any chance have any good book titles for kids about African history? I have found some on Egypt, but not sure where to start on the rest of the continent. We love to learn through stories! We did an in-depth study on Korea and found some good ones. And I think you have a good point. History curriculum seem to cover Egypt really well, but not much else on the rest of Africa!

Rhonda M I totally agree with you and we have MSV curriculum as well. Frankly, it’s too late in my opinion for her to go back and add. It’s frickin 2018 and as you stated she had 30 people consulting so it’s too late for me.

I have been homeschooling for 17 years now, and talk about learning alongside my children! I am sure you can understand all the things I found out while teaching my children! The shock of finding out truths that were never taught to me in school! Because of this, I also search out truths in History. We just started this curriculum a couple of weeks ago, and I completely agree with you, how I love that it is a starting point, that we can delve so much deeper into the past and find those truths! I am most drawn towards a Charlotte Mason approach, but I am at a point where I needed guides...GOOD guides, that someone else could pick up and know exactly what to teach if I couldn't. This curriculum is SO perfect for that! History is my absolute favorite subject, and I have tons of suggestions for you, but it would take up a lot of space lol.

Thank you SO much for this review. We're new to homeschooling, so I'm still trying to figure out where we're going with curriculum. We're missionaries in Haiti, and have a daughter who is Haitian, so we have a lot of conversations about slavery, colonialism and all those questions that come with living in a place like Haiti and being a mixed race family. I struggle with history for the same reasons that you mentioned, and like you, looked at other curriculum and started to have heart palpitations because it was just TOO MUCH. I LOVE this review and your whole approach because it makes it approachable and yet not something to get locked into. Also, I love all of your suggestions for extra resources. My Amazon wish list is growing! Thank you so much for sharing.

I think there's a lot of us.. whom did not truly enjoy or get that much out of History when it was taught in school... As a mom with very young children, I definitely struggle w/ wanting my children to have a complete education, but not really wanting to share too much about the brutality of mankind.. definitely all about what's age appropriate and such.. & still personally trying to figure out certain historical characters from the past whom seemed to have a lot of duality going on.. TY again.. Excellent sharing!! & greatly appreciated..

Loved this video! You are so inspiring with your teachable spirit. I do have a recommendation if you ever want to look into Korea. After the olympics, we dove right into Korean history and it’s fascinating, and prior to that I had only heard very little about Korea. There is SO MUCH! What prompted this was a free offer from Book Shark on Korea, but we went way deeper. We read an awesome book called When My Name was Keoko as a read aloud. And then I read the book from Yeonmi Parke called In Order to Live. She is a young North Korean defector who relates her story. This one is not for kids, just for mamas, but I definitely related parts of it to my daughter who is nine. There is just so much to learn about that area. This led to us having prayer for NK, and since then NK has made a step towards opening the door for South Koreans. Anyway, it was so neat, and as you can tell, I am very excited about all things Korea whereas before I hardly knew anything at all!

I've always had the same questions with religion vs history and science. Its like The Bible was written by man and I would ask my Poppa is this what he really said? Why do all the Bibles of the world change something even if its small? Why do the Jewish people believe one thing, Jehovah's another and Muslim another? Which is the real one? Which one did Jesus write? Then I met people who didn't believe in dinosaurs and I was REALLY confused. I would ask my Poppa...Poppa why don't they believe the dinosaurs are real? I wasn't allowed to be raised Catholic like my mothers family as my father would NOT allow such "ridiculous talk" so for me I had a hard time balancing and grew up one foot in the door and the other out. I believe Jesus lived and there is a good reason all these cultures have similar beliefs, but I also believe in evolution and The Big Bang. Finding a curriculum that fits is hard. Also my daughter is older so we have a hard time finding something that covers the truth about slavery and the way Italians, Native Americans and Africans were treated in America. I love The Good and the Beautiful but I still find my nerdy self adding so much extra for her. I also dislike that they have it right in the book read this to the child ect. Makes it harder for older kids to just do the lesson on their own. It feels more for younger ones but I cant get over how nice it is so I just bought it and added to it haha. I'm all nerding around the internets :D Writing my own lessons to slip in between the ones in the book. I am so glad you brought up being able to ask the question well how do you know this? How do they know this? and being ok with your kids asking those questions. Because Lord knows mine is a 100 questions type of child.

Hello. I really enjoy listening to your videos. Your voice is soothing and we have a similar view on homeschooling. I have a question and I hope you do not take offense. I like your soft music however it is very distracting to hear the music while you are speaking. Have you considered using this only in the first 10-20 second intro? Or is there an option to turn off the music, but still hear your voice? I am thinking not. It is just really hard for me to follow someone routinely that plays music while they speak to their audience. Imagine going to a conference/church/etc. and there were sounds going on at the same time. It is distracting from what is being said and I really want to know what you are saying. You mentioned at -about (5:55 and 15:40) getting flustered with curriculum guides that are too wordy and it causes you to get flustered, this is what happens when for me when someone is talking and music is playing, too,. Again, I love your information and sweet spirit!!
