The reason why they went with young Heihachi in Tekken 3D Prime Edition and Tag 2 is because the old VA for Heihachi, Daisuke Gori, died in January 17, 2010 at 57 years old (I think). The VA for current Heihachi, Unsho Ishizuka, died from esophagus cancer in August 13, 2018. It's sad for the 2 VAs of Heihachi to die, I really miss them.
I absolutely love Tekken Advance. It was an incredibly creative and pleasing way to fake out some 3D graphics and still looks reasonably good on a portable screen to this day. It might not play perfectly, but it's definitely an impressive technical marvel.
These types of games never get re-released, which is a shame. Portable ports of console/arcade games are often really interesting in what was added, taken away, and modified to make it work in the new format.
I'm guessing the reason why Heihachi became young in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and 3D Prime Edition was due to Heihachi's previous actor - Daisuke Gori passing away, so a new one was brought in to do the voice. I guess it's because the voice is so different that Heihachi's aging had to be reversed.
I remember these games because as a teenager, I wanted to emulate them to extract their sprites for animation reference. If you got those thumbnails sprites from TheSpritersResource, that’s the once I ripped as a teen shortly after Tekken 5dr!
Man... Watching footage of 3D Prime and listening to the OST for Tag 2 Wii U really brings me back. What a glorious time to play Tekken! I hadnt played one since the PS1 titles when those games came out.
Glad you mentioned the Global mod. 💀 I love seeing people take a look back at the previous installments and oddities like these since they don’t seem to get as much attention as Street Fighter’s. Thanks for feeding my Tekken obsession GuileWinQuote!
I've always wanted to see what handheld fighting games would look like if they were played at the highest level so I'm super excited to check out the tournament scene in Tekken Advanced
It's illegal just how good tekken advance feels compared to the other 3D fighting games on the GBA. Either way, they did a great job with the limitations for the time. I thought to myself there would be no other way to top that on the go.
restrictions on handhelds often lead to devs being more creative and fun games that were totally different from their older bigger brothers on consoles, you can see it with many different franchises, indeed that has been lost since the PSP onwards. The Wii U Tekken does seem to have some of that wacky fun you would find back then though.
Hmm, I thought there would be a mention of the Project X Zone series, but I guess that's a different thing all together. They're mostly crossover games, not really Tekken ones. Plus the first game in the series came on the PS2, which wasn't a portable console. Anyway, I do love the video! You really reminded me of my childhood days playing Tekken Advance, and watching other people play Tekken 6 on PSP.
As comprehensive and well put together this video is I'm surprised you missed out on Tekken Mobile for J2ME phones which I know nothing about in regards to history but remember mildly amused by its' wonky 2D sprites and bluetooth multiplayer.
I played Teken Card Tournament all the time when its serves were available. Literally my favourite mobile game to date and I wish they'd bring it back.
Only recently learned that Tekken Advance was developed by 8ing. That company is the legit unsung hero of this entire genre, even Marvel 3's success didn't put enough collective respect on their name.
Young heihachi replaced old heihachi in the 3ds port because at the time his original voice actor had passed away and Japanese companies hold in high regard their voice actors
You forgot another Tekken Mobile. There was another mobile game with the same name for the older phones that only have key buttons. It's totally 2D with stages from Tekken 6. It had a few characters. The story mode have cutscenes on every stage while everyone will fight Kazuya at the final stage (or Jin if you're playing as Kazuya). You won't able to hear sounds effects during gameplay unless you go to the options menu and set it to SFX. The game is using a generic punching sound with the Dark Resurrection Announcer included. You could even customize the characters pallette like some of the other 2D fighting games.
There was a Tekken release planned for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, but we never got it due to the system's short lifespan and snk going bankrupt. I wonder what that would have looked like.
I wish Kazuya's announcement was a lead-in to a Tekken on the Switch, even if it was just a port/collection, and ESPECIALLY if it was something as nuts as Wii U Edition was.
I had the PSP version of Tekken 6 when I was in high school because I didn't have a PS3 at the time. I was very disappointed by the lack of features, although the PSP port of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II might've spoiled me.
I feel good for holding onto Tekken Advance now. Good gosh Tag 2 needs a Switch port. Also pay for the right to bring Gon back, please-heck make a whole faux storyline that brings Akuma into it too since both the tag games are non-canon
There were 3 other Tekken games that were on mobile which are no longer ger avaliable. Tekken Resolute for the Java J2ME, A mobile version of Tekken 2 for Verizon Wireless phones which was also ported to the Zeebo, and the recently shut down game, Tekken Mobile. I was hoping to see those games in the video, but it makes sense why you don't have them. Good video, dude!
ive played the psp tekken 6, the 3ds tekken and the wii u tekken. theyre all super fun. wii u tekken let u draw pictures on the wii u pad touchscreen and then paste them on the characters body/clothes!!
My opinion on every portable tekken title on this video (not including mobile games). Tekken Card Challenge - the only reason why i got a wonderswan at first (now i own at least 5 titles including klonoa, megaman and bass and of course this title) and it’s very unique and fun, different than any Tekken title but it’s fun at least. Tekken Advance - a very good game I really enjoy it on my gba sp, the gba is a very impressive system for fighting games with limited hardware we got great fighting games. Tekken Dark Resurrection - a great portable port of tekken 5 Dark Resurrection and by far the best game in this video if not one of the best fighting games of all time! Honestly it’s different than the ps2 version it’s t5dr so we got lili, armor king and dragonov in it, everyone got different colors in their clothes and exclusive modes on psp like dojo and tekken bowl. I honestly would love to play this version again but I don’t own a psp anymore and this game is not on the playstation store so I can’t play it on my vita oh well at least i own the ps3 version. Tekken 6 - a shocking port especially for a 7th gen 3d fighting game. I’m glad that the horrible scenario campaign is missing in this port but the lack of content really hurt this port. T5DR still the best portable tekken game on psp. Tekken Prime Edition - it’s just tekken 6 psp but with much less content and tag 2 heihach, few exclusive stages and a movie people don’t care. The worst game in the franchise. Street Fighter X Tekken - you forgot this one and it’s on the vita. Not a fan favorite but for a vita port it’s impressive also you don’t have to pay for dlc characters in this one and all those playstation mascots are in this version. A good value if you like street fighter and the ps vita. Pokken Tournament DX - another one you forgot (maybe two? Because it’s also on the wii u? I don’t count tag 2 because the wii u it’s a home console but the switch is a hybrid) it’s called pokemon tekken in germany even in european cartridges it’s have that’s name along with pokken next to it. So my opinion is this game is fun and different but i rather play tekken with playstation controller than a joycon or switch pro controller.
I MAY be making shit up, but I'm pretty sure I played a down-scaled Tekken on my phone. Back in like, 2009 or something. No, it wasn't a smartphone, it was the old school, phone with buttons. It looked like Tekken Advance (or maybe even worse), but that is all I can remember about it. And also that the framerate was ABYSMAL, which, you know, is par for the course back then. Tekken Java or Tekken Mobile, it couldn't have been named anything else. And the PSP Tekkens... those are something special. I have both and still play them from time to time, honestly. Like, yeah, exactly, not much to say about them because they're literally just Tekken 5 and 6. It's like the PSP version of THUG2. It's literally the same game, still just as good.
I think even the PS3 version of Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection doesn't have the story mode either, i have that version and it's quite sad it's not there.
