Quick Tip : How to Parry { God of War Ragnarök }

- A quick guide to easily master the timing of perfect parries in combat, within God of War Ragnarok.
This video focuses on how and when to parry, but just a reminder here are the types of attacks, and which can be parried:
No Rings : Can be parried, dodged and blocked.
Yellow Ring : Can be parried, dodged but blocking will break your guard and stun you.
Red Ring : Can only be dodged.
Blue Rings : You must interrupt it in order to avoid damage (shield strike with double tap L1).
So you can only parry No Rings and Yellow Rings. You can parry projectiles and melee attacks, regardless of how large the enemy is!

The sound of the shield when blocking is definitely a great innovation in the game. One of my favorite sound effects.
Naw. The sound of your moms but cheeks clapping is waaaay better. Trust me. It’s one of MY favorite sound effects
dauntless shield had the most satisfying parry sound effect. Especially when its a perfect parry (It glows red when doing a perfect parry and glows yellow if normal parry)
I wish I could get that sound as a text alert on my phone.

If you're trying to get used to the timing, try using the Rond of Deflection for a larger party window. It makes a good difference if you're still getting used to parrying.

Focusing on predicting the point of impact and enemy movements actually helps a lot for many delayed yellow ring attacks

I still have a lot to learn but now it’s a full on war everytime head-to-head trying to parry everything he does,
instead of avoiding everything and grinding him down with range like I used to do.
Like dude the Mayan club that he pulls out. It’s fucking inescapable,
but parrying everything he does with it leaves him wide open.
Also the guardian shield has that counterattack right after parrying that I think has IFrames, so it got me to switch back to that shield also.
That was a nice flourish at the end there; nothing like approval from the OG

So you can parry pretty much anything that has No Rings or Yellow Rings, including projectiles and melee attacks. Even huge bosses and crazy attacks can be parried!
You can parry with any shield, but some have different ways in which they will counterattack.

nice tip on focusing on the weapon! yeah my rhythm game brain keeps thinking the indicator is a timing mechanic.
thing i noticed is that you only have a buffer before the attack hits, and not after (unlike GoT and rhythm games)

why do you mean by a buffer?
@@RazorIancein rhythm games you can press the button after you're supposed to by some amount and it was still count (in the same way that you can press jump after your character has stepped off a cliff and in most platformers will still count.

They make it much harder to do parries in Gow Ragnarök
Another tip to get good at parrying in this game is if you complete sekiro, I think that's a much easier method
I feel like if you don’t know how to parry, you’re never gonna beat some of these bosses even on story mode some of them are hard lol

during the fight with the berserker in the video, I noticied you parried like three time in a row. I didn't get this yet. did you just hold L1 all the time or hit L1 3 times perfectly? I'm guessing the latter because I try to hold L1, it blocked the first attack then they hit me up pretty good

Just to clarify, are the parry timings in Ragnarok are still the same with the last god of war? Because I have played the last god of war and the dark souls games so I'm quite used to parrying. Just wondering if the timings in ragnarok have changed.
Good question! I haven't done any analysis of parrying in the 2018 God of War so can't offer a definitive answer there.

How do you return the energy and punch them back with the energy in your shield?
Each shield has unique effects like that, so just depends on which shield you use
Iav got the the point now it’s not enjoyable to play because one’s they get a hit in that’s it I know am dead. I’ll try and hit or shield and absolutely nothing works! What also annoys me is the camera lock I’ll see energy within sight but I cannot for the love of money get him to turn so I can stamp on it! 😡😩

How the hell do I stop slow motion when I am getting hit by an enemy with the yellow circle? Cause every single time I pull up my shield and get hit Kratos throws his left arm like a mile back and leaves his front completely open to all attacks.
Your guard broke instead of parrying so that's the punishment
Sometimes when you parry successfully there will be a second blow while your shield is down, how to I deal with that?

There's "Rond of Deflection" you can find for the shield that increases the window
YES right, and it's paired most well with the "Emblem of Elusion" (also from 2018) what gives you more evavion distance/speed

From projectiles? What happens differs from shield to shield, you can try out and see which you like. Some send it back, some do it faster, slower etc.

One tap is enough to parry, double tap is using shield ability and also you can interupt blue ring attacks or push enemy.

I've beaten this game and still to this day I can't get the timing on parries for the big brute einherjar. Everything else I can do. Berserkers dragon grabs,. Grim spin jump attacks, Bjorn multiple slashes. Anything. Except those fuckers for some reason.

You can do either, but if you're really parrying at the last (and right) moment, a quick hit of L1 is all there is time for anyways. Best of luck!

Parrying is a really annoying mechanic, not only in this game but in any modern combat game. I wish they got rid of it
The parrysystem is absolut BS
How about getting the shield to WORK in the first place? I'm sick and tired of mashing L1 knowing an attack is coming, only to get NOTHING. The shield doesn't come up until AFTER Kratos gets hit, which is HORSE SHIT. I'm also sick and tired of mashing "∆" to get the axe back after throwing it but NOT getting the axe back. This game's control mechanics are TERRIBLE. I've defeated Ghost of Tsushima on lethal setting and Horizon Forbidden West on the hardest with no problems, but GOW Ragnarok is easily the worst game I've played when it comes to the controls simply not functioning properly.
