- Tyler is sharing his favorite flower to start from seed - Foxgloves! They are such a welcome sight in the garden for whimsy and color. We've been growing them for a few years now and have some hacks to share so that you can get in on the fun. Come hangout with us and start some seeds!

You can encourage foxgloves to bloom the first year by spraying them with a 150-200 ppm of gibberellic acid in the evening, three days in a row and water with a bloom booster. Do this with well-grown, mature enough plants and you should see an effect. 👍👍

I garden in NE PA in a zone 5b. I have been battling a herd of deer in my yard for years. I almost gave up on planting flowers and just go for grasses and shrubs. I found some foxglove and thought I would try one last ditch effort. Great news for me, the deer do not like foxglove, they walk right past it. And that is hard to believe because they eat every other plant that is "deer resistant" (lol) Now I plant them all over my yard. Thanks for the planting and care tips
Foxgloves are poisonous to deer so they stay away. I also have heavy deer problems and have found that they hate alliums because of the garlic smell and will not eat lambs ear because they hate the texture. Daffodils and poppies are also poisonous to them
Congratulations, you lucky dog. The deer here love love love our foxgloves. They eat our wolfsbane, pulling it out of the ground. Heavy sigh.
Foxy grows the first year as well and is super cheap:) they are not actually poisonous per say but can be harmful but you should not eat themDigitalis is used to make anti arrhythmic cardiac medication. The medication is actually called “digoxin” or digitalis glycosides.

i love my foxglove too, but not from seed. Mine are buttery yellow and incredibly beautiful
I started some from seed last year and they have flower spikes on them now. I wish I started more seeds. I already have some more started this year. I think I want to do more flower gardening and less vegetables since the critters get a lot of the crops. I keep honey bees so I was thinking about having more flowers for them and attracting the butterflies and hummingbirds to the yard. I bought a couple of the pollinator mix seed packs that Johnnyseeds has available. I'll check out their foxglove varieties you mentioned.

I live in Idaho zone 6/7. I have a small unheated greenhouse, if I start these seeds in August will they be OK in the green house? What about watering?
the translation of the word "purpurea" is reddish-purple. I guess this refers to the original color of the plant that grows in the wild fields, in its natural habitat. The original plant is taken and new dyes are developed
