- How to save Foxglove seeds and direct sow them for blooms next year. The key is early sowing!
I grow tons of Foxgloves and have for 20 years. I love the ease of these cottage garden flowers and this is how I save seeds to replant, swap and share.
The hummingbirds love these flowers too!
Here is the step by step blog post you can check out too:www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/...

GLORIOUS!!!
I'm just starting my Foxglove Forest this year, so next year I'll be in HEAVEN with these blooms!!!
I did get a few first year blooming plants just to satisfy my need for them asap!!!
Sounds like a great plan!
This was a very helpful video, I'm a visual learner and now I can grow more foxglove and save seeds. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! You are very welcome.
Thanks - I just bought 3 foxgloves & wondering how to make them come back next year ..this was a great video ..
Some years they come back thicker than others, I think it all has to do with what kind of winter I get. One thing is for sure, the gophers won't bother them.
I love that you add the Spanish translation. I will shared this video with my sisters who live in Ecuador. Thank you. I love your videos.
Thank you, but I can't take credit, maybe the automated captions did that. I hope they enjoyed it!😀
The humming birds are beautiful you're so lucky having them in your garden as we don't have them here in England. They certainly love foxgloves. It's amazing how an introduced plant to the US, designed by nature on this side of the Atlantic for bumble bees, can feed humming birds! That's nature for you tho 😊
The hummingbirds also love my Butterfly Bush which is not native, it is quite popular right now in the garden.
I didn't know y'all don't have any hummers! Wow.
That's too bad...
The things one learns thru the web is just amazing!
At least you can observe them in videos tho. ❤
Hi looks so Relaxing to watch. We grew theses for the first time this year, so happy with them. Bees love them x
Wonderful! Yes, foxgloves are a favorite of bees. Here it is the bumblebees that are especially fond of them.
Super simple and informative, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Lovely to see hummingbirds in foxgloves, a first for me! Don"t have HBs here in Oz. You are so lucky to have hummingbirds. Love foxgloves.🧡
I am sorry you don't have HB's, they are the best! Just love them flitting around and getting in my face when their feeder is empty.
The comment before yours is a person in the UK saying the same. No hummers!
I'm in the U.S. so we do have them.
It's nice y'all can observe them via video tho.
I also watch a few Australian channels, and I can observe the things y'all do have that we don't! ❤
This was helpful. This year, for THE FIRST TIME EVER... (I haven't had much luck) it looks like last year's blooming purchase has provided new growth this summer. They are starting to get tall, so fingers crossed. Thanks for the video. It was helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
A great video very helpful Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this info.
You are so welcome!
Exactly the info I needed.
I am so happy you found it helpful.
Well done thanks!
Our pleasure!
Awesome thanks for so much very informative
You are so very welcome!
Wonderful 👌💕
Many many thanks. I just posted a garden tour at Filoli and the foxgloves in it are to die for!
Thank you this is my first year I have the plants in pots but I didn’t know how to collect the seeds
Glad I could help. They seem to get better every year though you never know what colors you will get from cross pollination!
Thankyou for your simple to understand video. Ps i hear your girls in the backgrounds. I have 5 ducks and 16 chickens.from one chicken mom to another. Thankyou again for the video. I just hit the bell.
Thank you, my girls are a treasure and I love hearing them during the day as I work in my garden. The eggs are just a delicious bonus.
I'm so jealous of your garden! Doesn't it take a couple of years before seeds can become flowering plants? Thanks so much for sharing.
There are cultivars that will bloom the first season if started early. Since these got started in the summer as seeds then they will most likely bloom for me this summer. But we shall see and I will update everyone when they bloom.
Thank you
You're welcome
Fox glove is my favorite. Wondering what the difference is between those stalkier free like and the ones with the long, dainty vine? Love them both.
I have not sure about ones that grow on a long dainty vine. Sorry. Maybe you are thinking of trumpet vine or the fuchsias? The flowers are shaped similarly to Foxgloves.
So I just purchased a foxglove plant from a nursery and planted it in our yard. Should I collect my seeds before the first winter frost?
You can but I let mine reseed at will during the Fall, it loves the cold of winter. But if you want to save half to replant in the Spring you can do that too. Just know what falls to the ground and reseeds itself will bloom but the ones you start later usually won't bloom until the following year.
Nice video. I’m new to foxgloves. Never can get them to regrow or bloom. I’ve been treating them like an annual because of that. Hopefully I can figure out how to re-seed them.
I think my success is there are millions of seeds so a few take root and grow on. You almost can't miss with that many seeds.
i think its because they are so small and gets away deep down or away with the water. as in the middle of this summer i was sorting foxglove seeds by an table (i handled likely millions of them) from 3 or 4 plants i think and obviously i dropped some on the ground. its actually right over or besides where the water runs from the mountain and now months later there are perhaps ten , obv foxglove plant leaves, growing right where the stones are and the water runs trough. like one meter from where i sat
Thank you. Do you know the foxglove variety you use? It sound like at least one of them is a hybrid since you mentioned the seeds won’t grow true. I’m now to foxglove growing.🙏
No, it isn't that they are a hybrid, it is they are open pollinated so you will get a cross of all in your garden. So I could scatter seeds from the white foxgloves and still get pink from them, the bees bring pollen from the pink foxgloves to the white one.
I need to find some seeds. They are so pretty
Try Swallowtail Garden Seeds, they have quite the selection!
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse thanks. I'll take a look.
Purple flowers in the background got my attention. What’s that flower?
Those are Delphiniums! I have a blog post on growing them: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/how-i-grow-delphiniums/
Thanks for this helpful video. Do you mind telling me what time of the year you collected these seeds ? I have foxglove in garden that is done blooming and it is first week of june now. What will be time I can expect to collect seeds ?
In this video it was July when I collected them. But it varies according to when they bloom. I have a friend down the road a bit and hers have bloomed and already gone to seed and they are ready to collect. Mine are in early bloom right now.
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Thank you
Beautiful flowers! Which area and zone are you? I am in USDA zone 5 (southern Canada) and I wonder whether I can follow your instructions. Also, the package I have says biannual. Once established, will foxgloves self seed and bloom each year? Thank you for sharing!
These are biennial Foxgloves, they reseed and sprout then hibernate for winter and then bloom the following year. I am in Zone 8a, but have a short growing season because of being in the mountains. Here is a great explanation on growing zones and what that really means: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/garden-by-zone/
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse thank you very much for the reply 💛
Will the original plant that you took seeds from come back every year? Is it a short live plant?
Foxgloves are biennials. The majority grow the first year and flower the second then die. But they produce so many seeds and readily reseed themselves that it is worth having them in my garden. But, here is the caveat, when I plant all white ones from seed they will cross pollinate with the other colors in the garden and rarely come back true, meaning the seedlings will not be white, they will be another color. I may get a white one here and there but mostly they will be various colors. So yes, they are a short lived plant.
Can you do this same method with snapdragons or do you have to sow indoors?
If your climate is right you certainly can. Grab the book Cool Season Flowers to see how it is done. It is a great resource.
We have a foxglove indoors and the lower flower heads keep dropping off. Can the seeds from these fallen ones be planted?
If the seeds are ripe they should do fine if they were pollinated.
😊
Thanks Fannie!
Does the soil have to be bare before you shake the seeds off on it, or is it okay if the soil is mulched?
It depends on the mulch. If it is a shredded bark or wood mulch you would need to scrape it back. If it is a compost mulch you can spread the seeds on top of it.
Does the foxgloves rebloom again if you deadhead them!
Sometimes they send out side shoots and rebloom but they are much shorter. Still pretty though.
Can I plant foxglove in full sun area?
Yes you can. These are in full sun you see in this video.
What if the stalk is completely brown? Are the seeds still good?
Yes, the seeds are good.
Are they safe to handle? I love them but too afraid to plant them in our garden as they are poisonous.
So are many other flowers in the garden such as delphiniums, but most people don't know about them. Here is a blog post where I address many poisonous flowers: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/is-your-flower-garden-dangerous/
Its October now, I had purchased 2 plants this spring, now they look dead , but im not sure, can I collect any seeds at this time??
If it has seed pods on it you can collect them now.
I forgot ti ask . What zone are you. Im 8. Washington state
I am in Zone 8a
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse awsome im 8 b but i go off of just 8. Im in vancouver wa. I got my fox gloves from a box store. And i dont see any seeds pods yet. We did have that heat way and im thinking it shocked the plants. The stems are all green still. Including the small itty bitty leaves
What state are you located? USDA gardening zone?
I am in Calfornia in zone 8, but west of the rockies zones are moot and don't carry much weight here as we have such varying micro climates.
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse I'm trying to grow them in KY zone 6b. I've had luck with other late spring/early summer biennials like hollyhocks, bachelors buttons, poppies, and larkspur, but still working on getting foxglove. I'm thinking maybe my climate isn't right. I've tried sowing in spring and in fall, in sun and part shade but no luck yet. I finally just bought some and planted out this year. Fingers crossed I'll get some seedlings after these go to seed. Any suggestions?
Just planted some today. I didn't realize they are deadly poisonous.
They are only poisonous if you eat them and you would have to eat a lot for them to cause an issue. Here is a post I did on other common plants that are just as toxic if not more: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/is-your-flower-garden-dangerous/
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Correct. It is what they make Digoxin out of.
Apakah bisa tumbuh di indonesia?
Sorry, I couldn't translate
Can this flower grow in Indonesia?
@@Jbuck49574 I don't know as I am not familiar with your climate but these like cold winters. I suspect you have a more tropical climate and they may not grow for you.
Toxic Plant : Just order the seeds online after watching your video. Hopefully, the plant would save my garden from careless livestock & owners, goodbye to cattles, goats, dogs, chickens, etc.
Yes but there are many garden flowers that are toxic and it won't prevent chickens as mine eat them quite readily with no harm. I have an entire article written on my website on popular plants that are toxic: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/is-your-flower-garden-dangerous/
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse I visited your awesome website but it asked for email password, hell, No!
