    The lack of sarcasm in Japan was an adjustment when I lived there. The first time we stayed at a hotel with an in room onsen, my young son screamed and cheered soon as he saw it. The bellhop was so confused when I turned to him and said “Sorry, he hates onsen.”

      Literally just recently I made a dry sarcastic remark in Japanese and the person I said it to took it seriously and I had to immediately clarify that I didn't and that it was a joke. Jokes do exist in Japanese but dry humor is not a common thing I guess.

    Joey uploaded his first interview video (not called 'I spent a day with') on the 9th of December 2016 and Anthony uploaded his first on the 12th of August 2017. So Joey made his interview video first, but Anthony uploaded his first 'I spent a day with' video on the 6th of February 2018 and Joey uploaded his first on the 13th of July 2020. So Anthony was the first to name it 'I spent a day with' but Joey was the first to make an interview style video.

    • @fluidthought42
      @fluidthought42 Рік тому +15

      I like to say that the Japanese do have sarcasm, but they don't really dig on verbal irony. Sarcasm is usually defined as being denigrating or mocking, while verbal irony isn't. It's the difference between calling someone Einstein as a sarcastic insult and calling a rainy day a lovely day to go suntanning. The first is sarcasm, the latter is verbal irony.

      yeah, we use the word sarcasm in a more broader sense than it actually is. the definition of sarcasm is "the use of irony to mock or convey content", whereas we're often being facetious or ironic instead of actually sarcastic. so Japan has sarcasm (in the dictionary sense), but not so much facetiousness or irony

    I will say German does have formal and informal way of speaking like how Joey described Japanese. We spent half of semester in my german class on the different pronouns and conjuction you have to use when talking to superior versus a friend. I remember seeing a story of a man who was robbed in germany and the man seemed to be a non native speaker since he keep speaking formal to the person he was robbing, basically say,"Good sir please give me your wallet!". Its very confusing for everyone in the class who all spoke languages that didnt have that system(most of us were only english speakers but a few were bilingual)

    • @ChaosCause3000
      @ChaosCause3000 Рік тому +38

      As a native German speaker with intermediate Japanese, you’re kinda right, but Japanese is even more intense. In German you have mostly informal and formal but in Japanese you have way more levels

    • @Vinci480
      @Vinci480 Рік тому +6

      @@ChaosCause3000 I'm not that deep into my own Japanese study yet but from what I saw so far of Keigo, translates pretty well into German, you might need to shift a word here or there but in general you also have different levels of formal and informal speech.
      I noticed foreigners to german struggle with this especially at first in school since there can be a complete mess of a blend between friends, teachers or dont care about getting respect and the ones that wish you would adress them as the president of the world.
      So far most if not all of what I saw with Japanese grammar has one way or another to translate it into German, some systems are just used differently in each language.
      But also mixing Kanji and Context based conversations in, definitely doesn't help making it easier.

    A stereotype that grates on me a bit is when people claim English isn’t expressive. It’s all about the breadth of vocabulary you know; metaphor, simile, wordplay, and tonality add flavor. It’s not a language lacking in depth, rather, often times (like any other language) it’s the people that speak it lacking in depth.

    • @KantoCafe715
      @KantoCafe715 Рік тому +5

      Yea I'm not supposed to like English, as a fluent Welsh speaker, but the English language has so much depth. The accents and dialects in the UK fascinate me and the way people, use it. I think this is the main reason English has caught on around the world rather than brute colonisation. Japanese people who fall in love with English say they can be themselves when they speak it.

      hm, i think you're right, but i think maybe someone who has only spoken japanese or who grew up speaking only japanese for 90% of their life could have a hard time understanding just how hard tone, even something like facial expression or body language can add. also ' connotations ' -- the fact that certain words MEAN the same thing but they carry a different feeling. think ' portent ' vs ' harbinger ' . they both technically mean the same/very similar, but harbinger has much more negative feeling. joey was representing the opinion of a mainly japanese speaker. i mean he did agree with him but it could be easy to agree with him. with japanese maybe it's just that you don't have to put so much personal, active effort into making it deep, because the words taught in school already give that depth?

The worst was when telstra would randomly turn of the internet duing the middle of the night and you'd find the upload had paused - and this was with cable and not dial up. I'd say that English is a language that has many specific terms, but simply don't use them. this is why we say primary and secondary vocabulary. while you could be using these specific terms, most people wouldn't understand you because the terms aren't universally taught. and Japanese might use those types of terms and words more frequently. just a guess tho. coming from a Swede, I find many words that describe detailed things but they just aren't used daily. Here in Sweden, many old words are set aside for modern English slang. I think we should bring back overly specific terms.

    I can get that feeling of isolation and aversion to anything foreign. IDK if it's the same in Australia, but at least from what I've experienced in the US and read about, American society does have that same aversion to outside ideas and cultures. It's just that instead of all outsiders, society moves and changes who they hate. I highly suggest reading on the immigration of the Germans in the early colonial settlement, very interesting stuff, especially when you compare their treatment to the slaves that would come some 200 years later.

    • @HouseMDaddict
      @HouseMDaddict Рік тому +1

      I think because America is so big and has basically 50 small countries (states) itself, it's hard for people to sort of narrow down "Americans" as a whole. I grew up and worked in the Northeastern US and the majority of people know languages other than English (and usually it's not just Spanish or French or German, but it's like Thai, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, various African languages, various Native American languages,) and a lot of it is due to how fascinated people are with other foods and cultures and how diverse the US is in allowing access to foreign media. Anime/manga, Manhwa (Korean) and Manhua (Chinese) have all blown up in the last decade especially though like Funimation, Crunchyroll, and webtoons where people WANT to learn more languages and cultures to be able to understand cultures beyond just a piece of media translated in English. I'm purposely learning Japanese so I can understand beyond what works for an English translation and it's so great to watch something in Japanese and know there's a meaning behind stuff

    11:45 on the topic of perceiving (stereotyping) Japan as futuristic and technologized, I found „Techno-Orientalism“ edited by Roh, Huang and Niu, that interrogates this idea (and broader Asian stereotypes in context of technology) thoroughly through various essays. For me, this helped countered some bias in my own perception, stemming from Anime but also Cyberpunk tropes.
    One of the early statements that I found intriguing was the framing of Japan and China in context of technology: „Japan creates technology, but China is the technology. In the eyes of the West, both are crucial engines of the future: Japan innovates and China manufactures.“ (p. 4)
    From the back of the book: „Techno-Orientalism investigates the phenomenon of imagining Asia and Asians in hypo- or hyper-technological terms in literary, cinematic, and new media representations, while critically examining the stereotype of Asians as both technologically advanced and intellectually primitive, in dire need of Western consciousness-raising.“
